Playing Career

Began his professional career in 1989 after being selected in the 3rd round of the amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox coming off a National Championship at Wichita State…Made his major league debut on October 5, 1991 with Boston and in 1992 he belted all 5 of his major league homers in 27 games for the Red Sox…Was drafted by the Rockies in the November, 1992 expansion draft in the 2nd round and spent most of the 1993 season on the major league disabled list with elbow problems…Appeared in 9 games at catcher for the Rockies during their inaugural season in 1993 before signing back with the Red Sox in 1994. Made it back to the big leagues for the final time with the Red Sox in 1994…Overall he spent parts of 4 seasons in the major leagues and played professionally for 9 seasons…Embarked on his managerial career in 1998 after undergoing eight surgeries over the course his playing career that ended his career after the 1997 season.

Is currently in his 8th season on the major league coaching staff...Datz replaced Grady Little on March 20, 2002 after Little was named Manager of the Boston Red Sox on March 11...Served as Bench Coach under Charlie Manuel before moving out to third base when Joel Skinner replaced Manuel...Datz was entering his third season as the organization’s Minor League Field Coordinator after being named to the post following the 1999 season...As Field Coordinator, Datz was responsible for the coordination of all workouts and fundamentals of the six minor league clubs in spring training while overseeing the minor league field staffs and rosters of the six affiliates during the regular season...Jeff joined the organization in 1991-92 as an Area Scout in Northern California/Northern Nevada...Scouted the New Jersey area and was a coach at Short-season A Watertown in 1993...Later managed six seasons in the Tribe’s minor league system from 1994-99 at Watertown, Columbus, Akron and Buffalo, leading the Buffalo Bisons to the 1998 International League Championship...Datz compiled a minor league managerial record of 403-383 (.513) during his tenure as manager in the Indians organization.

Enters his first season as the Bullpen Coach after being named to the position on November 19, 2008…Her-nandez spent 3 seasons as the Pitching Coach of the Detroit Tigers from 2006-08… During his first season in Detroit he guided Tigers pitchers to the lowest ERA in the American League (3.84) on their way to the club’s first American League pennant in 22 seasons…Prior to joining Jim Leyland in Detroit, Hernandez held the same position for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2004 and 2005 after serving as Tampa’s Minor League Pitching Coordinator from 1998-2003…The Tampa, FL native is entering his 31st season of professional baseball in 2009…He began his coaching career in the White Sox organization in 1985 and spent 11 seasons in the California Angels system from 1986-96 where he coached current Pitching Coach Carl Willis…Joined the Angels Major League staff in May of 1992 at the age of 31 following the Angels team bus crash that injured several members of the club’s coaching staff…Remained in that position until 1996 before joining the Devil Rays organization in 1997.

ATHLeTIC TRAINING

LonnIe soLoFF begins his sixth season as the head athletic trainer with the Cleveland Indians after spending five years as assistant athletic trainer and physical therapist for the Cincinnati Reds. In 2006 Lonnie was promoted as the organization’s Direc-tor of Medical Services where he oversees all aspects of the club’s medical and rehabilitation programs.

Lonnie and his staff are widely respected around the professional sports industry and following the 2007 campaign the Indians Athletic Training and Medical staffs were recognized as MLB’s best by a membership of their peers, PBATS, and Baseball Prospectus, a leading baseball research and content organization. During Lonnie’s tenure the Indians’ games lost to injury have repeatedly been among the lowest in Major League Baseball.

While attending St. Louis University, Lonnie received a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, a master’s degree in physical therapy, and attained his certification in athletic training. Lonnie has taken an active role in teaching orthopedics and baseball sports medicine, which has enabled him to give inservices, lecture and participate in research studies. His rehabilitation work was featured in the October 2003 issue of PT magazine. The 34-year old is a member of the NATA and APTA and began his career in baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1996 as part of the PBATS internship program.

rICK JaMeYson begins his 8th season as the Assistant Athletic Trainer of the Cleveland Indians.

Rick begins his 18th season as an Athletic Trainer in the Cleveland Indians organiza-tion after spending four seasons with the Buffalo Bisons from 1999-02. He also represented the organization as an Athletic Trainer in the Arizona Fall League after both the 1995 & 2000 seasons. Began his professional Athletic Training career in 1992 at A Watertown of the New York-Penn League, working in Watertown for two seasons before being promoted to A Columbus in 1994.

Jameyson, 38, is a native of Wellington, OH where he attended Wellington Senior High School, playing football and baseball. Graduated from Baldwin-Wallace (OH) in

1992 with a degree in Health Education. He resides in Tallmadge, OH with his wife Jennifer, and their daughter, Jessica, and son, Nicholas.

first full-time athletic trainer for the Indians. Starting with Weisman (1921-49), just five men have served as head trainer of the Tribe since 1921.

Wally Bock (1950-70) followed Weisman. Jim Warfield (1971-96) followed Bock. Paul Spicuzza was head athletic trainer from 1996-2003.

nICK KenneY begins his fifth season as the Major League Assistant Athletic Trainer after joining the organization on December 1, 2004.

Kenney (A.T.C./C.S.C.S.) spent the 2003-04 seasons as the assistant athletic trainer for the Cincinnati Reds. He was named to that position in November 2002 after spending two years (2001-02) as the program manager of sports medicine for TriHealth, the official medical provider of the Reds. While with TriHealth, Kenney was involved extensively with healthcare coordination and rehabilitation, including the programs used by Reds major and minor league players. Prior to his position with TriHealth, he served for seven seasons as head trainer for the Cincinnati Cyclones professional hockey club.

A graduate of Clinton-Massie High School and Wilmington College, Kenney is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association. He resides in Medina, OH with his wife, Patty, and their four children- Paige, Colin, Nathan and Madison.

JIM MehaLIK enters his 12th season with the Cleveland Indians, serving in 2005-08 as a physical therapy consultant. Along with Lonnie Soloff and the Athletic Training Staff, Jim coordinates the rehabilitation and physical therapy programs for the organization’s disabled and injured players. Since 1993 he has been the Rehabilitation Manager at Lutheran Hospital, a position he still holds.

After graduating from The Ohio State University in 1988 with a degree in Allied Health Sciences, Mehalik was a staff therapist at Lorain Community Hospital for two years from 1988-90. He went on to work three years in Columbus, OH in a private physical therapy practice from 1990-93 before assuming his current role with Lutheran Hospital in 1993.

Mehalik, 42, resides in Brunswick Hills, OH with his wife, Lisa, and their three children, Haley, Jacob and Hannah.

toshI nagahara begins his 2nd season as the Assistant Athletic Trainer of the Cleveland Indians.

Toshi joined the organization prior to the 2008 season, assisting Lonnie Soloff and his staff while helping Masa Kobayashi with his transition to the big leagues. Prior to joining the Indians Nagahara spent parts of 4 seasons in the Oakland A’s organiza-tion from 2004-07 with A Modesto & AAA Sacramento as a Strength & Conditioning Coach / Athletic Trainer and interpreter.

He was a graduate assistant Athletic Trainer in 2002 and 2003 at Arkansas State, where he earned a masters in exercise science. He also earned an undergraduate degree in exercise science from Southern Arkansas in 2001. He is a member of the

National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and is NSCA (CSCS) certified.

Nagahara resides in Takamatsu, Japan in the off-season. He also has a degree in economics from Kagawa University.

JaKe BeItIng begins his 5th season with the Indians organization, and 2nd as the Minor League Strength & Conditioning Coordinator. Jake is based out of the Goodyear, AZ complex and spent the 2008-09 off-season conditioning the club’s big league players who reside in the Valley of the Sun.

Jake served as the GCL Indians strength coach in 2007. He spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons in Cleveland working as the major league strength & conditioning intern. He graduated from John Carroll University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 2006.

After graduating Jake, a native of Akron, worked as a graduate assistant strength coach at the University of South Florida, while completing his masters degree in

exercise science.

Jake resides in Phoenix, AZ with his wife Maggie.

tIM MaXeY will begin his 7th season as Major League Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Cleveland Indians. In addition to his position with the Indians, Maxey serves on the MLB/MLBPA Strength and Conditioning Advisory Board and is an advisor to the Taylor Hooton Foundation, a national steroid education program backed by MLB.

Maxey, 38, has ties to the Indians organization, spending the 1997 season as the Strength Coach for the AAA Buffalo Bisons during their run to the American Association crown. Maxey then joined the Kansas City Royals organization in 1998 as the Player Development Strength and Conditioning Coordinator before spending four seasons from 1999-2002 as the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for the major league club in Kansas City. He also was the President of the Professional Baseball Strength and Conditioning Coaches Society from 2003 to 2007.

The Portsmouth, OH native received his Bachelor’s Degree from Shawnee State University and a Master’s De-gree in sport and movement education from The Ohio State University in March 1997. He served as a graduate strength and conditioning coach for the Buckeyes’ football and baseball team. Tim is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach (RSCC).

He and his wife, Amy, reside in Avon, OH along with their three children, Zach (7), daughter, Makenna (4), and Matthew (2).
