AUGUST 2014

THE END OF E-SKIP?

Here we are heading into August and as I write this and look at map at DXMaps, I see plenty going on in Europe but not much going on here. But that’s the way it goes in late July. Skip tapers off and hopefully gets replaced by tropo and I’ve already seen some good reports of it in the Midwest.

Did you have a good Es season? If you live in Ontario, you probably did. And if you had the time to stay by your receiver all day you probably did. I had very little time to do any DXing this summer and missed at least two big openings. If you want time to DX, don’t ever retire because when you do retire, you won’t have any.

MEMBERS AND MORE

This month we welcome Dr.Carter Bays to the club.

Carter lives Colulmbia, SC. His main interests are analog and DTV DXing and uses an Antennas Direct XG91 (which is what I also use) along with an Insignia converter box.

Renewals were received this month from Jeff Kruszka, Fred Laun, John Adams, David Austin, Gray Fulk, Tim McVey, Gary Siegel, Dave Bright, Al Tobia, Duane Whittingham, Eric Sundius, Stan Weisbeck, John Marx, David Sinclair, Mike Lazaro, David Braun, Bob Rush, Doug McAbee, Jim Thomas and Rob Ross. Thank you all for your support of the WTFDA!

Gary Siegel writes “Enclosed is a $10 money order to continue membership in the club via the e-zine computer means. Not sure how well this will work for me but I get where things have gone. Will certainly miss the VUD in printed form. I actually miss it already. What with no skip this season (it basically gone from TV) – not missing much, I guess. Will want to stay in touch with other DXers.”

INTERESTING PICTURE

If you have ever been to the WTFDA website (the

wtfda.org website) you may have come across a photo of dxers at the 1957 AIPA convention. A man by the name of Larry Vehorn saw the picture and wrote “The photo was taken in front of our garage. I hosted the ’57 AIPA Convention in Indianapolis. I had the “welcome” sign painted locally and handed it to Carl Lupton who hosted the ’58 convention. Most guys in the photo are

gone now but a couple of us are still around. Our family TV was set up in the garage. The tuner was well used but survived the weekend. The CE of WFBM-TV (now WRTV) visited us, then invited everyone to a tour of the studios downtown.” And now you know the rest of the story.

LIKES THE FM DATABASE

We received an email from a user of the WTFDA FM

Station Database that read “Thank you so much for putting the FM database together! Ever since 100000watts.com became so expensive a few years ago, finding a good database to reference has become a challenge. This looks like a great setup.” –ds. I thanked the user for his kind words and he now has become a source for some good info in his part of the country.

Our database has been up just over a year now and covers not only the US and Canada, but Mexico, Cuba and the Cayman Islands. We’ve had about 15,000 visits to the site with around 2,000 being return visits.

THE CUBAN ANALOG SHUTDOWN

Here’s the latest information on the shutdown of

Cuban analog TV. It was supplied by Bill Hepburn on the WTFDA bulletin board and “Raymie” on the WTFDA Forums.

Cuba? Digital television? Why yes!

You might recall that Cuba is using the Chinese DTMB standard, but there was still a lot we didn't know. Channel spacing and allotments, whether Cuba actually had DTV on the air and other matters were all unknown. Well, I hit the jackpot between the ICRT site and that of state organism LACETEL, the self-described "Institute for Telecommunications Research and Development". Here's what we now know, both about DTV and changes to Cuban broadcast services:

• Cuban DTMB will be using NTSC channels in high VHF (7-13) and UHF (14-51) as outlined in the standards (which are in English!). All currently assigned transmitters are on UHF. A list of these transmitters is available; only two are set up for HD at this time.

• And to receive these signals via tropo you'll need a converter box. Pretty much all of the

available equipment is being made by Chinese firms. I have no idea how someone in the US would go about procuring one legally.

• The DTV service includes three new state channels: Cubavisión Internacional, Canal Infantil (kids' shows) and Canal Clave (music), as well as weather and data broadcasts and six radio streams. Canal Clave does, however, mean the end of the music channel that's taken over CE in past summers.

• Speaking of which, Canal Educativo 2 now simulcasts Telesur 20 out of 24 hours a day (airing its own shows only from 4:30 to 8:30 pm).

RADIOSEARCHENGINE.COM

Thanks to Jim Thomas, here is an email received from Michael Robertson of the RadioSearchEngine site:. I was referred to you by Jim Thomas who suggested I make contact with you and alert you to our services which may be of interest to WTFDA. We offer a search engine which tracks radio stations in real-time for what song they're playing. We have data on most stations. This is a free service available at radiosearchengine.com. The DAR.fm (http://dar.fm) services lets people record radio stations from around the globe. We have about 40,000 stations in our system. Users can record one station for free or up to five for $40 per year. Jim says he finds these services useful to identify stations he's getting over the air because he can search for the song or compare the recording. I hope you'll invite your members to check them out. Also, I made a coupon code for dar.fm available for WTFDA members. They can get 10% off any subscription tier by using the coupon code: DAR10off during the check out process.

VIZIO IS YOUR PAL

Here is an email from Cal Glover on the beach in NC: “Another update on my new Vizio HDTV and its many hidden talents. My SCART connector finally got here from China, and I hooked it up to give me an extra composite video and audio outputs. When I hooked up the TV and vintage multi-system VCR with RCA cables, I found that it not only displayed beautiful PAL (European PAL!) pictures, but it also displays fine-looking SECAM (both French and MESECAM). So it looks like the “world chip” still lives in the video sections of these sets. An added bonus—thanks to the set’s 120 Hz refresh rate, the traditional 50 Hz Euro-flicker is gone. Even though VCRs output relatively grotty SD pictures, it’s very easy to notice the difference in picture quality that the 80 extra lines (576 vs 480 lines) make in PAL and SECAM. To say the least, I’m tickled.

NEED A DVR?

This was received on 7/24 from Gary Hickerson…

PERSEUS FOR SALE!

Bill Nollman put this ad on our email lists (and other places). Since many of you also do some AM DXing in the winter, you might be interested… Bought 5 years ago and used often but not a lot. Non-smoking house. The unit itself is in near mint condition. Includes SDR, box, US power supply, USB cable and home made dual end Y cable for running from laptop power. Paid $1200, now selling for $999, asking $850. I’d prefer to sell it to someone in the US but if it’s not too much of a hassle will ship anywhere if you are willing to pay shipping and insurance. I also have a Dientronik 88-108MHz FM downconverter if interested. Please email me offlist at [email protected].

AND FINALLY

I just have to thank the rest of the board of directors for their generous “retirement” gift of the Elad S2 SDR. Over the past fifty years I’ve owned (and modified) more FM receivers and tuners then I can count. I’ve had them all, or close to it. I’m not joking when I say that the Elad SDR is the best receiver for FM that I’ve ever owned, and that includes the XDR-F1HD. This receiver has everything a DXer would want in a receiver. But it doesn’t have HD. But then, who cares about HD anyway. Thanks Greg, Keith and Doug. CU next month.

NEWS ITEM UPDATE: Back in November 2013, we had a NEWS ITEM concerning KIMI 107.9 Humboldt, NE. The station was originally licensedfor 6.1 kW-V/82 m at 40-13-55/95-58-17. They were granted a CP to move to 107.7 with 50 kW/124 m at 40-56-56/95-45-28 Class C2, plus changeCity-of-License to Sidney, Iowa. After construction of the tower and antenna was completed, and KIMI was conducting Program Tests, theFederal Aviation Administration intervened. Their concerns the new transmitter’s location being only 12 miles away from Offutt AFB atBellevue, Nebraska, and the new facility, being inline with Runway 30's final approach, would cause interference to the Instrument LandingSystem (ILS) frequency (109.5) leading aircraft to Offutt's Runway 30. KIMI then operated with an STA with 500 Watts from the new tower. TheFCC has now issued a modification to the CP downgrading the power to 13 kW (they added H polarization) at 124 m Class C3 at the new site. Inaddition, KIMI has changed the City-of-License to Malvern. At this time . . . that’s the latest scoop.

The Editor’s Note

Outside of some cameo appearances, the 2014 E-skip season looks to be close to completion at this point, and although it had its moments, below average activity overall would be its most conclusive verdict. As often can be the case, early July had the most Es activity, with a major opening on July 6 producing hours of high MUF Es in the middle portion of the continent and eventually moving westward. There were some more unusual endpoints reported (at least compared to recent years) throughout the month, including fairly strong openings on the 15th between the Canadian Maritimes and the Northern Great Lakes, and the Pacific Northwest and the Canadian Prairies. Overall though, every time it seemed like the season was about to get into a “groove”, it wobbled off the proverbial rails. There’s always next year!

This column goes to press as one of the stronger tropo events in quite some time has been ongoing across themid-south into the Great Lakes. Paths reported on the 24th through 26th include from IL to AL and GA, KY to NC and VA, and MI and Ontario to AL and MS. The eastern half of the continent has been embedded in an overall cool weather pattern for this time of year, but as brief infiltrations of warm air filter in out ahead of the seemingly endless parade of incoming cool fronts, there may be more chances ahead for good tropo as we head into August.

** OKLAHOMA. Area tropo enhancement brings RF21, June 24 at 1412 UT.HSN is decoding with antenna south; what's this?! NO PSIP ID, just blank for 21-1, but has three morealso blank: 21-2 with religious talk by FRANCES onthe set, only clue being an email address to JSM.org; 21-3 is black with ``No video input`` and rapid digital clock in the UL including frames zipping by, just like we sometimes see on Enid public access TV, like 16:21:28.25 etc. (not the current time but the number of hours+accumulatingthat there has been NVI!) However, there is JBA modulation, can't make it out, but sounds like the fully modulated 21-4 with an ad for mops & buckets. W9WI.com reveals what this is: KTOU-LD,4 kW ERP in OKC, but he has only 21.1 with HSN.

JSM means Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, but the sinful bawler's TV channel is called SBN = Sonlife Broadcasting Network. So I enter an OKC zipcode in the Channel Finder, http://jsm.org/channelfinder.html and what do I get?Only cable and satellite providers! They are so incompetent they don't even know, or want us to know that they are on air 21.2 in OKC.

As for HSN, what in the world is the point of putting it on this LPTV, when it is also on RF 50 Ion's fullpower 62.6 in OKC?? So I still don't know what programming is supposed to be on 21.3 and 21.4 from KTOU. Who owns this sorry excuse for a TV station, anyway? FCC TV Query shows Mako Communications LLC, in Corpus Christi TX.

Had almost forgotten, but previously logged KTOU on 21 with HSN as in DXLDs 10-30, 11-03, 11-06, 11-07, 11-09, 11-23 shortly after their DTV transition.

While I have this in from OKC, I also check the other listed LP channels: ``bad `` signals on 19, 36, 45, 46 (Norman) --- of course could be from somewhere else like 45 Tulsa or Wichita; and NO signals on 17, 41, 48 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 26, June 24 at 1413 UT, KTENNBC on PSIP as 10-1, i.e. Ada`s station which is rarely seen here, altho nor far beyond OKC. Also KTEN-CW as 10-2. W9WI.com also hasABC on 10-3, but I didn't find it. Back in the day on analog 10 only, KTEN was a joint ABC/NBCaffiliate which led to all kinds of scheduling problems, especially prime-time.

Same market for CBS is KXII-12, originally Ardmore but today listed only under Sherman TX across the river; now only a bad signal from it(?) still on RF-12. Transmitter site is still in OK betweenArdmore and Durant north of Lake Texoma (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

1758 on 3, old-style movie credits, gunshots, must be western, seems opening rather than closing; bug in UR I can't make out.

1802 on 4, graphic reading BANCO CENTRAL -----;1804 financial graph

1805 on 3, western is in again, hero in white hat butunseems El Llanero Solitario; unknown bug in UR, too close to corner

1810 on 3, Televisa-5 bug LR, animalation dubbed into Spanish, surely originally speaking English

1815 on 3, better view of them, a bitch and a dog --- rather like Lady & the Tramp? Haven't seen it in sesquidecades. No, dog is more wolfy than woofy, and so is she. Has rodramatic music score; 1817 Canal 5 promo, CCI

1818 on 4, still financial discussion audio at least; 1821, up to color briefly, host welcomes YL to ``her`` studio

1818 on 5, MUF back up to here weakly with algo ads

1831 on 3, wolves vs bears in feature-animation, // on 2, but less CCI on 3; definitely net-5 bug in LR, but this does *not* match their national schedule:http://www.televisa.com/canal5/horarios/with a series of half-hour cartoon shows

Weak opening still going on ch 2 and 3 as I wrap upthis report at 1845 UT July 3 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. Another analog sporadic-E opening is underway when I turn on and tune in at 1418 UT July 5:

1418 on 2, `Sabadazo` show bug in lower left, with segment from a beach, peaks southwest. Televisa-2 star bug in LR; audio CCI from rap/dance music in English

1423 on 2, now they've added an -o, so ``Sabadazoo`` as current guest is a parrot

1433 on 2, Sabadazo now features clown, and girl with teeth braces

1436 on 4, algo with loud audio but hardly any video. This takes some doing, considering the 4.5 MHz MUF difference. I've long suspectedcertain Mexicans are still running 2:1 video/audio power ratio, analogically abandoned long ago in USA for 5:1 and then 10:1. It's //something in the CCI on 2

1457 on 3, Grupo Pacífico oval 3 bug in UR, so XHQ Culiacán, Sinaloa;1459 organ donation PSA/promo, finishing with animated YO CREO

1502 on 3, ``Grupo Pacífico`` audibly mentioned, 1503 DTV promo explaining about converters. So how much longer will XHQ remain DXable on analog 3? Until November 26, 2015 according to:http://tvdxtips.com/mexcitylist.html

See also map at http://www.tdt.mx/tdt/But it must be outdated as claims already shutdownanalog May 2014 in Monterrey, and border cities Nuevo Laredo, Juárez, all of which I am still seeing in analog in June/July! But I suppose ch 2 stations like XEFB, XEFE and XEPM could vanish at any moment

1504 on 3, animated intro to CARRUSEL show for kids, then YL hostess in studio, soon two of them. This is still XHQ

1509-1510 on 3, snapped several photos of XHQ with 3 bug in UR, this the sharpest altho color had dropped out:http://www.w4uvh.net/XHQ1.jpgto be added to http://www.worldofradio.com/dxfotos.html

1513 on 3, stationary graphic about ``Fidel Gutiérrez`` audibly mentioned, turns out to be an ``Amber Alert Sinaloa``, i.e. missing (young?) person

1526 on 4, MUF up to here now with CCI

1529 on 3, another Amber Alert Sinaloa with mugshot. Bug in upper right now appears to be Pacífico`s stylized gull-in-flight enlarged inthe oval, but no number

1530 on 3, back to show with 3 bug in UR

1532 on 4, it's Televisa-5 net bug in LR with animation, soon gone

1539 on 4, shelf of football uniforms, pre-game show. Generic Televisa Deportes bug in UR, alternates with Televisa-2 star bug also in UR

1539 on 2, // 4 but much CCI on 2; then 4 talking about boxing next Saturday, back to Copacabana for World Cup

1540 on 3, still kidvid with two YLs

1556 on 4, Belgian national anthem, // Univisión on cable 61 here, not synched by a few seconds. Also // ABC via KOCO-7, not ESPN-1 withWimbledon. This 4 is very likely XHBS-TV, Los Mochis, Sinaloa

1612 on 4, built up to strong signal but also CCI; yet nothing on 5, 6

1616 on 5, now weak video here

1619 on 5, it`s WC FB // 4

1627 on 4, I am still seeing World Cup, but now with Azteca-13 bug in UR. Skip has evidently shifted to Hermosillo, Sonora, XHHSS-TV. Soboth major nets are covering the same game? In any given market is it only one or the other, or doesboth not matter?

1634 on 4, back to Televisa Deportes generic bug UR for WC FB alternating with net-2 star. At the moment nothing visible on 2, 3, 5!

1659 on 2 & 3, only weak CCI remains

1659 on 3, fades in something letterboxed, evidently PSA for GNP, followed by ad for Nikzon (pronounced almost like Nixon), an haemorrhoid remedy, and then Bancomático; no bugs during these ads to distract customers

1701 on 3, Televisa Deportes graphic, photoedhttp://www.w4uvh.net/XHQ2.jpg and back to game, snow-free for a while, Argentina beating Bélgica; then bug in LL says TECNOLOGIA TD LIBEROVISION --- apparently an interactive gadgetfor classic fútbol games wherein TD means not onlyTelevisa Deportes but Tú Diriges. (I am not certain it`s still XHQ by this time.)

1705 on 3, WC FB // UNI and ABC, and nothing on other channels

1731 on 2, weak video CCI only; mostly gone, so lunch

1840 on 2, bit of video but mostly nothing(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. Sporadic E opening July 6 gets both Canada and Mexico at same time. Already going atturn-on, all times UT:

1306 on 2, CCI with antenna NE for UHF tropo, movie? in English, 1309Wendy`s ad; some 2-tone whine on the audio, video offset QRM? One ofthe pitches is close to G4 above middle C, 392 Hz. Likely one of the surviving analog Ontarians, CHBXor CIII2.

1311 on 3, CCI here

1312 on 2, CCI in Spanish as Mexico is also hopping, so I rotate and concentrate mainly on that,q.v.

1446 on 2, from north, preacher, praying in English;I have just been getting Missoula MT on FM 94.9; see U S A too

1615 on 2, antenna NE, weak graphic in English with countdown

2123 on 2, golf in English from NE; as PGA scheduled on Global in Ontario, so CIII-TV-2 in Bancroft (I am also getting FM from Ohio).1937 km = 1204 miles

2331 on 2, fade-in from NE, movie/drama in English; 2352 still week video

UT July 7:

0124 on 2, weak signal from NE, with whine, English, letterboxed, a competition in studio; can't make out any bug; 0127 promo for BellMedia. Skeds show likely `Rising Star` on CTV in Ont, so CHBX Sault Ste Marie (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1729, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. Big sporadic E opening July 6, started off with CANADA, q.v. from the NE, but with Spanish also in, soon rotate to south to concentrateon Mexico, all times UT:

1312 on 2, CCI to Canada, PSA `Mover a México`

1317 on 2, old western movie, CCI, clock in UR at 8:17 and something else I can't make out

1317 on 4, Spanish audio

1318 on 6, ape movie, Azteca-13 bug in UR; mentions subtítulos; no CCI

1319 on 2, movie? with Azteca-7 bug in UR; CCI from Mexican music

1321 on 6, Mexican video but my old Zenith B&W monitor prefers to insert NPR audio from 88.1 KWOU Woodward OK, which is up with tropo

1324 on 5, Canal 5 promo; local RFI from somewhere to the video

1324 on 3, oval 3 bug in UR from Pacífico, i.e. XHQCuliacán, Sinaloa; violent music video. Bug in UL says ----- MUSICAL

1325 on 4, Televisa-2 star bug in LR, probably XHBS Los Mochis, Sin.

1326 on 4, Televisa-5 promo, ``La Teoría del Big-Bang, nueva programación en Canal 5`` but could be cross-promo from net 2 XHBS

1327 on 3, Pingüinos in music video(?), Televisa-5 bug in LR

1327 on 5, Pingüinos from two video meshing signals CCI, net 5

1332 on 6, Ape movie is back, video, Azteca-13

1338 on 6, Azteca-7 promo, but probably cross from Azteca-13. (The only way to be sure which netis by the bugs, not the content.)

1348 on 6, now there is CCI as opening grows, so start checking FM

1351 on 87.75 gospel music in English, Franken FM?? See U S A

1352 on 87.75 Spanish channel 6 audio; 1358, Azteca-7 promo, ads, Azteca-13 promo

1400 on 87.75, Azteca 13 announcer says ``Jorge de la Selva``, so that's the ape movie, but rejoining plays clip from ``Charlie's Angels`` --- was that in George of the Jungle movie?

1631 on 4, at SSW, Spanish, animation, net-5?

After 2120 more Es DX but mostly FM from Ohio, Michigan, Virginia(Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGSET)

** MEXICO. July 7 was a respite day for sporadic Eafter all the axion on July 6, but some is back UT July 8:

0051 on 2, algo CCI from SSW

0055 on 2, now it`s a novela with Televisa-2 net star bug in LR

0312 on 3, news from XHBC with its blue square bug in LR with white 3 and tiny call letters going upward on left side. Mexicali BCN

0322 on 5, waiting for the other Mexicalian to MUF in, and now it does, XHAQ with Azteca-13 bug in UR, contest or talk show, heavy ghosting like 3, soon gone

0333 on 3, XHBC still in but very poor with fading

OTOH, KETA OKC, *constantly* breaks up on both my antennas, underdead or DX conditions, unusable. Multipathproblem or something wrong with transmission? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. Sporadic E DX openings continue; we're enjoying them while possible during the summer, especially since analog telecasts arebeing phased out after 2015, earlier in some parts. July 9, all UT:

1930 on 2, Azteca news promo, soccer, from SSW,Azteca-7 bug UR

1940 on 2, different station with 2:40 clock (CDT) inLR, and maybe temp, kidvid with clown?

0358 on 4, novela VG with Televisa-2 star bug in LR

* CANADA. Analog-only sporadic E TV-DX July 11,UT:

2233 on 2, antenna northeast, algo in English, very poor

2337 on 2, Global bug barely visible in UR during ET-like show, antenna north. In fact, `EntertainmentTonight` is exactly what's scheduled now on CKND-2 Minnedosa MB. Soon overtaken by Spanish so I rotate toward Mexico, q.v. When I am getting both Canada and Mexico, of course, double-hop distances are possible end-to-end, but never for us in the middle of it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. A bit of Es DX on channel A2, July 11 at 1411 from SSW, but nothing further develops (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. OETA must be reeling from another budget cut thanks to the Republican-controlled OK government, hostile to spending on anything ``public``. Despite OETA`s director instituting a puff program interviewing legislators two by two. OETA flagship news program, the `Oklahoma News Report`, effective July 11, has been cut back to only half an hour per week. For the past year it had been one hour per week, also adrastic cut from the former 5 x 30 minutes per week. Anchor Dick Pryor tries to put a positive spin on it, saying the half-hour weekly format ``for a while``, will enable OETA to put more resources into online news for ``deeper news impact and greater reach``. Similarly, on the website: ``Beginning Friday, July 11 at 7pm, ONR will air as a 30-minute program that will also be available online. Managing Editor Dick Pryor and his team are developing a newscast strategy that will be designed to provide broadcast viewers and digital users meaningful Oklahoma content, value-added resources and an enhanced educational experience.`` ONR does get repeated several timeson OETA-1 and OETA-2 (OKLA): UT Sat 0000, 2300; Sun 1530-OKLA; Sun 1900, Mon 1800-OKLA, Tue 1900-OKLA, Wed 2000-OKLA.

This first edition of the new series boldly led with a feature about Oklahoma Atheists and how surprisingly active the group is, 3000+ members, fifth most active in the world by some measure; yet many people had their faces blotted out for fear of reprisals by the Good Christians making up 92% of the state. Their logo is A-OK! Some Spanishthrown into video, ``caliente``; 1502 black screen for a while, and 1503 neat video showing impressive TV transmission tower and antenna (channel 2 makes for the biggest elements), and finally animated ID for ``XEFE La Imagen Familiar``with the usual very big call letters. That`s Nuevo Laredo again, one of our closest possible XE TVDXstations, 1005 km/625 miles (while XEPN-3 is 892/554 away, XEPM-2 947/588). I wonder if XEFEstands for ``Frontera Extrema``. ``Esta mañana del sábado veo su programación encanal 2 a larga distancia en Oklahoma. ¿Cuál es la televisora en la frontera? ¿Donde se ubica su cadena?``

1630 on 2, new show starting, not sure if same station as horoscope, MUJER in title, including lipstick cylinder flying across the screen. Novela, I guess, rather than talkshow

TeleVer program pagehttp://www.televisaregional.com/veracruz/programacion/verifies that the 1600 horoscope nonsense is titled `Que Vuelan Vuelan`, (which I also heard mentioned, but what does this mean idiomatically? Something about flying); and the 1630 novela(?) is `Mujer --- Casos de la Vida Real`

1637 on 2, ad for knee treatment which has now come to Veracruz! CCI

1639 on 2, animated TeleVer ID showing XHFM, and Bocas de Oro, which is apparently a resort area in the state

1807 on 2, still CCI, occasionally up to 3 and 4

1811 on 2, promo mentions Acapulco, but not enough to assume XHAP-TV; then also mentions Tamaulipas, as also still XHTAU

1813 on 2, old western movie, maybe Teleactiva bug in UR as in XEFB-TV, Monterrey. Program schedule is coming up blank:http://www.televisaregional.com/monterrey/programacion/?c=2#

Then I checked some online TV program guides and found Teleactiva not even listed, besides scadsof cable channels, many of them from USA. O, bug in UR is just digital clock

1830 on 2, quiz show

1842, Still some CCI on 2 as I close this report. 6m Es maps checked a few times during this opening have showed little if any activity between here and Mexico

1845 on 2, SEP PSA [Secretaría de Educación Pública]

1847 on 2, Mexican western movie, B&W? No bugs; opening fading out

2244 on 2, fade-in & out somestation with clock bugin UR, as seen earlier; what's it? Same station at 2249 full-screen ID as +v, and opening credits for another old Mexican movie. Therefore it's XEWO-TV Guadalajara. Rather than temp to the right of the clock, IIRC, it's a tiny +v logo [Más Vision], which is just about invisible, too far into the corners on both my overscanned monitors. So XEWO-TV applies to the earlier log at 1813 which had been suspected as XEFB-TV Monterrey (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1730, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 90.3, July 14 at 1540 UT, promo ``Southern Gospel Saturday from 6 am here on KHYM``. But it's really KHEV Fairview OK west of Enid, usually eclipsed by closer and stronger 90.5 KGVV Goltry with 14 kW; as I am bandscanning for

AUGUST 2014 ··· 25 ··· COAST TO COAST TV DX

Mexican FM DX to go with TVDX up to channel 5 or6.

From FCC info you'd never know that the IDs you hear on KHEV are ``KHYM``, but licensed to Great Plains Christian Radio, Inc., same as for KHYM 103.9 in Copeland KS, 100 kW, but with numerous relays in KS and OK. FCC shows 90.3 site is about 10 miles WSW of Fairview on north side of US 60, and with only 490 watts, its 60 dBu service contour barely exceeds the US 60/412 junxion north of Fairview (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 33, KOCB ``34``, OKC, (a sibling station to ``Fox 25``, KOKH, RF 24), has finally added a subchannel after a long time with none (altho IIRC they did have one for a while after the DTV transition) --- now it's GetTV as 34-2, which seems to have a fairly good selexion of old movies. Primetime theme UT July 15 was Africa (Glenn Hauser, Enid, July 14, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. Sporadic E analog TVDX started coming in just as I was completing the last report: July 15, UT:

1553 on 2, antenna south, weak video, guys talking

1616 on 2, aiming NE since 6m maps show opening up there, but I hear Spanish, so back to SSW for much more signal, also CCI on 4

1625 on 4, Televisa-2 promo for Cantinflas movie on Saturday afternoon; seems more S than SW so not XHBS Los Mochis?

1632 on 2, CRASH TEST DUMMY lettering on screen --- no wonder they say it in English; in studiointerview from Azteca-13

1633 on 4, Televisa-2 again star bug in LR, studio talk show

1640 on 2, Azteca-13 mentions ``Siempre Acapulco``, name of novela

1645 opening fades out (and no sign of any more Es for the next 23 hours at least) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. Sporadic-E analog TV DX, July 16, UT:

1742 on 2, weak video signal, animation, new Televisa-5 net bug LR

1942 on 2, next check after a break, algo from southwest, with an 01-800 phone number across the bottom (It's started raining here; for some reason seldom get Es DX when it's raining; and continues all afternoon for 2.5 inches; at least no thunder for a while, so I can leave the antennas connected.)

2009 on 2, glimpse of FOX on someone's hand-held mike. So could it be XHRIO Matamoros, now with Mundo-Fox?

2012 on 2, ad mentions ``el valle``, another clue toward XHRIO in El Valle del Rio Bravo, but hardly

certain. `S720` at the top, with an f; 2013 ad for Colegio del Occidente. (Searched later: as the name implies, there are several of these in Sinaloa,Sonora); 2014 program `Barra Deportiva`, and Grupo Pacífico circle 2 bug in upper right, so XHI Ciudad Obregón, Sonora or one of its clones

2028 on 2, CCI is now heavier

2039 on 2, gala swirl bug in LR among CCI, i.e. Televisa-9 net

2040 on 2, now there's an f bug in LR, i.e.Televisa-4 net

2104 on 4, Azteca-13 bug in UR; at times it vaporizes, resumes

2111 on 4, Azteca-13 is VG now with novela; while 2 with Gala has CCI

2145 on 4, Hermosillo addresses visible in ads; 2147 snow-free

2147 on 2, music show with Tu Canal bug in UR = XEPM Juárez

2213 on 2, movie from Tu Canal; this and Gala are same offset producing heavy QRM; W9WI.com shows CiJz an H'so are both zero offset and so is XHI; Hepburn map agrees, but so are plenty of others

2218 on 2, Gala with promo(?) for Las Noticias por Adentro, so Hermosillo? Mixed with CCI from Tu Canal movie

2219 on 2, Gala TV promo for `Pasillo TV` show at 4 pm

2227 on 2, Gala with less CCI

2232 on 2, video from one, audio from the other

2248 thunder starts and opening fades out by 2300,so about to close down here

2304 on 2, brief resurgence of algo

2338 on 2, TV back on, Gala swirl in LR, poor, nothing more.

Recapping, this setup is getting to be familiar: XEPM Juárez on 2 in same direxion as Hermosillo XHMMA on 2 with Gala; Hermosillo XHHSS on 4 with Azteca 13 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENINGDIGEST)

** MEXICO. Weak sporadic E is trying to get going July 17, UT:

1548 on 2, fade-in with f bug in LR = Televisa-4 net

1602 on 2, looks like the horoscope show again, traced July 13 at same hour to XHFM, TeleVer in Veracruz

1630 on 2, f bug in LR continues to fade in and out occasionally(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 31 & 32, KXOK-LD Enid: my numerous complaints that there has been *No sound for months* are incorrect! I had found this to be the case on two separate set-top-box converters, and not the case with any other DTV channels they pick up. No, the boxes` own mute button is not engaged, and anyway if it were, wouldsurely apply to all channels? I have a third STB which I hardly ever use, so July 18 at 0100 UT I try it too, and voilà, there is sound on these channels, yet back to the first two and they are still silent.

Maybe rescanning them would fix the problem, but Ihave a bunch of local and DX channels saved I really don`t want to get deleted since they are not coming in all the time. I still suspect KXOK transmission somehow caused this since the sounddisappeared independently on two STBs but not onthe third (they are all Zenith 900/901) which had been out of use. Anyone else with such DTV/STB experiences? There may have been a time I accidentally hit autotuning instead of manual on thesetup menu, but got out of it ASAP and no damage seemed to have been done (Glenn Hauser, OK, DXLISTENING DIGEST)

June 16 brought two new Texas FM stations in KINL and KPRR; tropo from northern Arkansas was in at the same time. The June 19 opening brought six new FM stations from Florida to bring that state tothe 70-station mark. I finally hit the 200-station mark from Illinois with the log of new WJKG 105.5; I also added two new stations during the E-skip opening the same evening. June 30 brought a tropo opening to the Mid-South that allowed me to log two new NOAA Weather Radio stations from Mississippi. The Ackerman transmitter was clearly the strongest of the two new Mississippi stations heard. On both stations, I heard a tropical weather outlook for the storm that became Hurricane Arthur. WBLX 92.9 is the first Mobile market station I’ve logged on tropo (I heard WZEW 92.1 via E-skip in 2009). In the middle of that opening, an E-skip opening was also noted to upstate New York and southern Quebec, noting relogs of WQTK and CBF12 on 92.7. I caught WSIE 88.7 off on July 5 during an E-skip opening, allowing me to log KFRI with their Christian CHR programming from Air 1. The E-skip opening the next day started with another opening to Quebec, combined with a tropo opening to western Indiana. The opening switched to the northwest later in the day, with only my second North Dakota FM in the logbook (KACL 98.7) and putting Montana one station closer to #20 (KTHC 95.1 is the 19th Montana FM). The opening ended with the log of KQAZ 101.7 for my 14 th Arizona FM. The July 10 E-skip openings brought MUFs into the FM band from Quebec and Ontario, with another log of CBF12 and hearing CBON26 for the first time in several years. As of July 14, the FM total is now at 1,279, with the NOAA Weather Radio total at 116. 73.
