Graduation& Gratitude

Message from the President

Grace to you and peace in Jesus Christ. We are pub-

lishing a Fall Cavalier Magazine to reach out to our

alumni and friends twice a year with the good news

at Bishop DuBourg. The graduating class of 2014

is highlighted in this issue, noting their accomplishments and

post-DB plans. Please pray for these recent graduates as they

venture forth into a much larger world.

We are also publishing the names of our many donors, alumni

and friends who have given financial gifts to Bishop DuBourg

during the 2014 fiscal year (July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014). We are

very grateful for all of these gifts; they help us keep tuition afford-

able and to offer quality student programs in faith, academics,

and extracurricular activities. This Giving Level Report sum-

marizes total annual giving, including DB Forever Annual Fund,

Adopt a Student Fund, Endowment gifts, Gala Auction and Golf

Tournament gifts, Veterans’ Memorial Wall gifts, among many

other types of gifts. If we have made a mistake or if you have a

question, please contact Joyce Mard or myself; our contact infor-

mation is below.

A special shout out to the Class of 1962 who, in 1997, created

and funded their own “Class of 1962 Endowment.” It has supplied

$43,000 worth of scholarships to stellar students since 1997 –

including $10,000 for the 2014-15 school year. The Class of 1962

Endowment helps to supply scholarship grants to students who

are natural leaders, filled with school spirit, involved in extracur-

ricular activities and achieve academic excellence. Most of our

13 other endowed funds help students in financial need. If you

or your particular class would like to establish an endowment or

learn more about them, please call or email me.

Please know that our alumni are always welcome to visit

Bishop DuBourg. We know this place holds powerful memories for

you. I invite you to visit us on Sunday, Nov. 2, (All Souls’ Day) for an

Alumni Open House. Mass in the DB Chapel (the former Precious

Blood Sisters’ convent) at 9:00 a.m., followed by a continental

breakfast reception with tours available afterwards. This could be

your opportunity to rediscover DB.

Bishop DuBourg High School continues its mission of devel-

oping leaders in faith and service and educating young men and

women for the challenge of further education and/or the work-

force. Our alumni are one of our strongest assets. Thank you for

your prayers and support of Bishop DuBourg! Be assured that we

pray regularly for our alumni and benefactors. Please visit us and

rediscover your alma mater – especially on November 2, the Feast

of All Souls. May God bless you, your family and friends.

Sincerely,

Rev. Michael J. Lydon, President

advisory Board news

a special thanks to our teams

I n 2014-15, Bishop DuBourg continues to have an active teams structure

which meet on a regular basis. The Advisory Board of Education meets

three times a year to consult with the President and Principal. Our Faith

Formation Team (FFT) recently assisted our faculty and staff to operationalize

the recommendations of the FFT’s report which was finalized last February;

this report may be found on our website http://www.bishopdubourg.org/db/

faith-service/

Our Finance Committee meets regularly to oversee reports and make sugges-

tions about how to increase non-tuition related revenue. Last year, for exam-

ple, we conducted an E-Raffle based on the Finance Committee’s suggestion.

Our Enrollment Management Team meets through our Advancement Office.

It looks for new ways and opportunities to invite prospective students and

their families to come to Bishop DuBourg. Our Cav-for-a-Day event, parent

gatherings at current students’ homes, and our shadow visit programs are all

efforts to increase DB’s visibility and enrollment.

Our Facilities Team partnered with Foresight Inc. this year to plan how best to

replace our current gym roof and add air conditioning. Several options, based

on cost and design, will be discussed at upcoming meetings. This project, we

have learned, will cost over $1 million. To that end, DB has hired the Rome

Group, a fundraising firm, to devise plans to meet this financial challenge.

The Donor Development Team helped our Advancement Office increase

participation and profits at our 2013-14 Gala, Golf Tournament, Archbishop’s

Cocktail Party, DB Forever Annual Fund and Tuition Assistance. We look for

their talents again this year to enhance participation in our events and

fundraising.

The Distinguished Alumnus

Award presented annually at

Commencement recognizes

the personal, professional, and civic

accomplishments of a DB alumnus

who had demonstrated a commit-

ment to faith, family, and service. It is

the highest honor that DB can bestow

upon an alumnus. Bishop DuBourg

is proud to announce that Norbert

Leo Butz is the recipient of the 2014

Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Norbert Leo Butz is from a large

Catholic family, raised in St. Stephen’s

parish. He is the son of Elaine and

Norbert Butz and is the seventh of

eleven children. Following in his older

siblings footsteps, Norbert decided to

attend Bishop DuBourg and is a 1985 graduate

(yearbook photo inset at right).

At DB Norbert ran Cross Country, was Class

Officer on the Student Council, was a member

of the Social Justice Club, Missions, National

Honor Society, as well as the Guild Theatre.

Norbert was also involved in theatre produc-

tions at many of the all-girl schools in St. Louis, such as Cor

Jesu and Nerinx.

Growing up in a big family, Norbert says that music was

always in their house. It was one of the reasons that he

became involved with the Guild while at DB.

Norbert earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the

Conservatory of the Theatre Arts at Webster University. At

Webster University, he began to consider entertainment as

a career. Steven Woolf, the Artistic Director at The St. Louis

Repertory Theatre, gave him opportunities to perform in

productions at The Rep. Following his time at Webster,

Norbert went on to the University of Alabama and earned

a Masters of Fine Arts. He then spent time in the Alabama

Shakespeare Festival’s Professional Actor Training Program.

After Alabama, he moved to New York City and made his

Broadway debut as Adam Pascal’s replacement as Roger

Davis in Rent, in 1996. In 2002, he was nominated for his

first Tony Award, for Best Performance by a Featured Actor

in a Musical for Thou Shalt Not. Following his Tony Award

nomination, Norbert originated the role of Fiyero, starring

alongside Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel in Wicked.

Norbert left Wicked to star in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels as

Freddy, a character that he based off his father. In 2005, he

was then nominated for and won his first Tony Award for

Best Performance by a Leading Actor

in a Musical, for his portrayal of Freddy.

Taking a break from Broadway,

Norbert had a role in the film Dan

in Real Life with Steve Carell, Juliette

Binoche, and Dane Cook. He also

starred as Rowdy Kaiser in the short-

lived ABC Show The Deep End.

In 2010, he returned to Broadway

starring as Jeffrey Skilling in Enron.

Following this short-run play, Norbert

starred as Carl Hanratty, in Catch Me

If You Can and in 2011 was nominated

and won his second Tony Award for

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in

a Musical. In 2012 he appeared as him-

self, on the TV hit SMASH and followed

that with playing Jack, Katie Holmes’

brother in the Broadway show Dead Accounts.

Through it all, Norbert has remained close

to his family and proud of his Catholic roots

in South St. Louis. After the death of his sister,

Teresa Butz ’88, the family formed the Angel

Band Project, a nonprofit that uses music to

encourage the healing and empathy for sur-

vivors of sexual violence. Norbert has been very active with

the charity. He returned to St. Louis to headline a benefit

concert for The Angel Band Project. The Angel Band Project

has become active on the national level. Along with the

family, DB also honors Teresa with the Teresa Butz Team

Spirit Award given to a student annually.

Norbert Leo Butz began his show business career at DB

and has loved appearing at DB unexpectedly, once surpris-

ing Mr. Jim Leibrecht at a Guild Production. We honor him

for his talent and commitment to philanthropy.

every pallet. All housed within the his-

toric residence of Archbishop Robert

Carlson.

On June 27, 2014 Bishop DuBourg

hosted a cocktail party which allowed

history to repeat itself, taking patrons

back to 1917. The credit of the first

cocktail party is given to Mr. and Mrs.

Julius Walsh, as reported by Eric Felten

in the Wall Street Journal. Mr. and

Mrs. Walsh resided in what is now

the residence of the Archbishop of

St. Louis. In 1924 the property was

purchased from the family and has

been the Archbishop’s residence ever

since. In May 1917 Mrs. Walsh invited

50 guests to her home on Lindell Blvd.

at high noon, following mass. Period

cocktails were served to guests includ-

ing Highballs, Clover Leafs, and Mint

Juleps. The party scored an instant hit.

The historic ties to the Archbishop’s

residence and the first cocktail party

are what first sparked the interest

of Brad DePriest ’74. Brad had the

vision of using elements of the past

to create a fundraising event for DB.

Brad wanted to celebrate the history

of the first cocktail party while rais-

ing funds to assist future Cavaliers,

“Commemorating Cocktails” was cre-

ated to support the Bishop DuBourg

Adopt-A-Student Fund. Brad com-

mented, “through personal interest

and coincidence, I found Eric Felten’s

article, which included the fact that it

was held in the house that now serves

as the residence of the Archbishop of

St. Louis. Mr. Felten ended his article

with a comment hoping that someday

the Archdiocese would acknowledge

that history. With my wife being a

long time Catholic educator, I was well

aware of Archbishop Carlson’s dedi-

cation to Catholic education, and it

seemed likely to me that Archbishop

Carlson would support a commemo-

ration of that first cocktail party as a

DuBourg scholarship fund-raiser.”

Archbishop Carlson graciously

opened his home. Ted and Jamie

Kilgore of Planter’s House provided a

bar menu and service reflective of the

historic relevance of the event. Mike

Emerson, ’74, of Pappy’s Smokehouse

donated his impressive catering staff.

Chef Kevin Nashan of Sidney Street

Café prepared gourmet appetizers to

compliment the cocktail concoctions.

The ambiance for guests was enhanced

by Tom McDermott, renowned pia-

nist and composer, from New Orleans

whose performance dazzled the

attendees. Eric Felten, the journalist

whom penned the Wall Street Journal

article provided historical commen-

tary. Felten and McDermott ended the

evening with a rendition of “St. Louis

Blues.” The attendees were provided

with an entertaining evening that sat-

isfied a latitude of senses.

The conclusion of the evening

brought Fr. Mike Lydon, President

of Bishop DuBourg to reflect, Tom McDermott performs on the piano.

the class of 1962 scholarship endowment

The Class of 1962 Scholarship

Endowment was established in 1997

to generate scholarships for sopho-

mores, juniors and seniors who attend

Bishop DuBourg. The generosity of

the Class of 1962 has enabled scholar-

ships to be awarded to ten students in

the 2014-15 school year. The recipi-

ents have demonstrated leadership in

the classroom, through extracurricu-

lar activities—including sports, and

achieved at least a 2.85 cumulative

grade point average. We are grateful to

the Class of 1962 for their foresight in

establishing this very fruitful endow-

ment, which has distributed $43,000

in scholarships since its inception.

cathy Brickey Memorial scholarship endowment

Congratulations to Vincent

Wienhoff ’15, Amaryllis Trabanco ’16,

Emma Butler ’15, Abigail Dennis ’17.

These students received scholarships

awarded from the Cathy Brickey ’78

Memorial Scholarship Endowment, in

conjunction with annual gifts given

from Cheryl Lovell ’74 and Shirley

Norris. The gifts of Cheryl and Shirley

support current students who are

involved in the Guild Theatre. The

recipient of these awards are chosen

by Guild Director, Mr. Jim Leibrecht.

The Cathy Brickey Scholarship

was established in memory of Cathy

Brickey ’78. During her time at DB,

Cathy was very active in the Guild

Theatre. Her mother, Margaret

Charleville, and her brother, James

Brickey ’77, work in partnership with

Jim Leibrecht in selecting students

whom are active in the Guild and

devoted to the Performing Arts.

The DB community is very grate-

ful to Margaret Charleville and James

Brickey, ’77, for their stewardship in

establishing this memorial.

spotlight on…

students

nathan pence ’15Bass anD Balance

Most high school students dream big. Aspirations of

notoriety are often part of their life plan. Most of these

dreams, over time, are scaled down into more realistic

attainable goals. With perseverance a select few “make

it.” An even smaller percentage of that group accomplish

these objectives while in high school. A current DB senior

is among that elite group. Nathan Pence ’15 has a big

dream and is chasing it.

Nathan, an unassuming friendly young man, doesn’t

walk our halls with the swagger of a star on the rise.

However, when he is in the Band Room his true persona

shows. Nathan is a musician.

Born into a musical family and starting piano at 8 years

old, he taught himself the guitar and joined his brother’s

band in the sixth grade. He began playing bass guitar four

years ago and found his passion.

Nathan has played professionally for the past two years.

His first professional gig was on New Year’s Eve at Robbie’s

House of Jazz in Webster Groves. This fall his talents are

taking him on a 10-day national tour with stops in Los

Angeles, Chicago, Nashville and St. Louis. Nathan will also

be travelling to Europe and Japan.

How is this high school senior going to balance being

a student by day and a touring musician by night? Nathan

strives to remain balanced. “I like the best of both worlds,

being a professional musician on weekends and a normal

teenager during the week,” states Pence. “I think it is really

important for me not to lose sight of either aspect. I love

music but I love being at DB too.”

Nathan has plans beyond the stage. He hopes to attend

college in New York. He is considering The New School,

Manhattan School of Music, or The Julliard School, where

he has a pre-screening audition already scheduled.

Nathan’s plans take him beyond the halls of DB, but

his personality and talent have made a lasting impression.

Mr. Matt McKeever, Director of Music at DB states, “Over

the past two years, I’ve seen Nathan grow from a talented

young bassist with an abundance of potential into a stellar

musician who has taken advantage of that potential and

used his God-given gifts to their fullest. Today, Nathan is

one of the top jazz bassists in St. Louis – not just in his

age group, but across the board. While I am constantly

impressed by his musical talent, I am even more impressed

by his humbleness. Nathan obviously has a gift that few

people his age possess, but when he is with the rest of the

Band, he sees himself as just one of the guys. He doesn’t try

to carry the weight of the group on his shoulders; he simply

does his part to contribute in a positive way.”

“Today, Nathan is one of the top jazz bassists in St. Louis – not just in his age group, but across the board.”

On Friday, August 15, the Feast of Mary’s

Assumption into Heaven, 50 faculty mem-

bers and staff gathered at the Maria Center.

Dr. Tom Wagner and Ms. Cathy Modde ’81, led the

faculty and staff by presenting, discussing, and apply-

ing Marian spirituality to our personal lives. Mary was

a resilient woman of faith. Tom and Cathy suggested

practical ways that the faculty and staff might keep

a spiritual perspective at the heart of all of our work

through prayer, reflection and viewing each other as

children of God.

Have you considered establishing

a charitable gift annuity as a

way to make a gift to Bishop DuBourg

High School and still receive a ben-

efit for yourself and/or your spouse

for the remainder of your lives?

Interest rates on CDs and other fixed

income investments have declined

over recent years. Individuals are in

search of ways to maintain cash flow,

seek the security of guaranteed pay-

ments and save on taxes.

Charitable gift annuities are offered

in four different types:

Single-life Annuity – an annuity

payment to only one person for his or

her lifetime.

Spousal Joint-life Annuity – an

annuity payment to married couples

(Upon death of the first annuitant,

the remaining spouse is paid the full

annuity payment during his or her

lifetime).

Two-life Annuity – an annuity pay-

ment to one person and then transfers

to the second person upon the death

of the first person.

Deferred Gift Annuity – an annu-

ity payment that can be deferred to a

future date. (Date must be at least one

year after the original contribution).

With a charitable gift annuity you

enjoy a guaranteed payment for life!

We are grateful for all members of the Bishop DuBourg Family who have remembered Bishop DuBourg High School through their Estate Planning. We’d like to acknowledge and thank those who have made the ultimate gift to Bishop DuBourg.
