God calls MacPherson Presbyterian Church to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, to make disciples, and to be His witness.

This month alone, the Youth started reading Scriptures in Sunday service, brought you the Soup and Sandwich luncheon at the annual Congregational Meeting, and visited with seniors at Heritage Place. They also attended a winter retreat at Lake Junaluska. We are thankful for MacPherson’s Youth! For more retreat pictures, please turn to pages 8 and 9!

Be Not Deceived Pastor Jim

Paul writing to Christians in Galatia admonishes, “You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you,1” (Galatians 3:1a). Paul could easily have writ-ten these words to the Christian community today and been spot-on. Who among us has not been fas-cinated by false representation of facts, concepts, or Biblical truth? Think of what I am writing about as a spiritual magic show where the illusionist or magician is the great deceiver. The great deceiver knows what is true but is striving to convince his audience that what he is presenting is really genuine. And many fall prey to the various deceptions, bewitchments, and enchantments of the great deceiver. Within the Christian community many people have fallen prey to various false representations of Biblical truth. Some of these have intimidating theological names such as antinomianism, modalism, as well as many others. There are also those deceptions which are named after people: for example, Arianism, Pela-gianism, and many others. Yet, there are many more common deceptions, bewitchments, and enchant-ments that plague Christians every day. Some of these are the illusion of control, universalism, and that there is no God. There are also numerous other types of these more common deceptions as well.2 The sermons that I will present this month will ad-dress some of these very common deceptions. I also want to point out that our adversary has not

Page 3: The MacPherson Press · 2020. 3. 3. · The MacPherson Press March 2020 God calls MacPherson Presbyterian Church to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, to make disciples, and

changed his way of attacking God’s people. Consid-er the well known story of the “Fall of Humanity,” as recorded for us in Genesis 3:1-24. In this event the serpent approaches the woman and convinces her to believe what he is saying to her ra-ther than believe what God has said. The serpent craftily uses just enough of the truth when asking, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the gar-den?’” (Genesis 3:1). The serpent does this inten-tionally to obfuscate the truth and to confuse the woman. Remember God declared to Adam, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:16-17). When the woman responds to the serpent with an imprecise version of God’s command the serpent quickly challenges, “You sure-ly shall not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil,” (Genesis 3:4-5). The result of this exchange is that the woman, and her husband who was with her (see Genesis 3:6, men), chose to believe the serpent instead of believ-ing God. This is what caused sin to enter into the hu-man condition.

The woman’s response to God after eating the fruit is, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate” (Genesis 3:13). Now here is the point to shar-ing this Biblical account: our adversary is still ac-tively deceiving people today by providing fasci-nating false representations of God’s Good News. Throughout Scripture God’s people are warned to “Be alert,” and to “Be on guard.”

Peter writes these words of warning and encour-agement to the Church, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accom-plished by your brethren who are in the world” (1 Peter 5:8-9). Be vigilant always!

Until the nets are full,

Pastor Jim

________________________ 1The Greek word, Baskainow, means to fascinate by false representa-tion; ergo, to deceive, bewitch, or enchant.

On behalf of the Congregational Care Team and myself, I would like to thank the ones that have helped with our funeral receptions here at Mac-Pherson. The food, physical help, and monetary

contributions have been such a blessing to our team and espe-cially to the families we served. It is truly a team effort here at MacPherson and God Bless you all! Thank you again!

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV)

We need volunteers in Sunday School and Bible Studies to fulfill what we are called to do raising our young in a way pleasing and glorifying to God. This is a promise we all make as a congregation—not just parents and grandparents—at a child’s baptism. You may or may not know that you have talents that can contribute to the success of filling

the pews with young minds to return to the Body of Believers beyond high school and college. Pray, answer God’s call, and step forward to serve!

What will our congregation

look like in 20 years?

MacPherson Music Notes

Hello from the MacPherson Choir Room!

Happy March and I hope everyone is look-ing forward to a beautiful Spring season … especially after our “on and off again” tem-perature swings since the first of this year! The Chancel Choir is working diligently on our music for Holy Week, to include beauti-ful and meaningful anthems for Palm Sun-day, Maundy Thursday, and Easter morning services!

I am also happy to announce that Amanda Schafer and myself will be playing some Two-Piano Duets as part of the music for these Worship Services next month. What a privilege for me to play and partner with Amanda in this unique and meaningful mu-sical presentation.

“Praise the Lord together, PLAYING.”

Thanks, as always, for the love, support, smiles, and kind words from the Congrega-tion for our musical endeavors here at Mac-Pherson Church!

Joyfully! ~ ~ Beth Walters

From Congregational Care . . . David Hesnard, Chairperson

Dinners for Eight, the Young at Heart luncheons, Wednesday Night Fellowship Suppers, and Bible Study are opportunities to participate, engage, encourage, and grow in our walk with the Lord. Along the way we refine our priorities and grow in our relationship with our Crea-tor, all the while honing our care, love, and compassion for our congregation members who need a simple com-ing along side effort that says, “I stand with you in your time of need.” All the while we energize our hands, feet, and hearts in service to the Lord and our fellow believers as we journey together in faith.

Two near-term events include final preparation and dedi-cation of the Henderson House on Saturday, 29 Febru-ary to ready it for sale and acquisition by a new family. On the 14th of March we will hold our TLC dinner to hon-or and bless our care givers and care recipients in their journey of faith and healing. Invitations have gone out and preparations are underway for an enjoyable evening of fellowship and dining with an emphasis on care and compassion for families facing chronic health and medi-cal challenges.

My thanks are extended to everyone who has so kindly assisted, supported, and served the needs of our congre-gational families this past month as we continue to care for those who have experienced loss of loved ones and dear friends of many years. I ask for your continued pray-ers of support, hands of care, and compassion that in so many wonderful ways show our true faith and belief in the provision of the God we serve. Thank You All.

With Prayer and Service—David

Dear Family and Friends,

At Knights of North Castle VBS, your students will enjoy an inter-active, energizing, Bible-based good time as they go on a quest in search of the King’s Armor. They will become Knights and discover how to serve God and God’s mission for their lives.

Dinner in the fellowship hall sparks the beginning of a high-energy opening assembly time with mu-sic and drama. Your Knights will discover a Banner Verse (Bible memory verse) that will remain with them in their faith long after VBS.

Breaking out in teams, the Knights make their way on a quest expanding on what they’ve discovered by participating in a variety of activities: Interactive Bible lessons reveal Castle Callouts to equip your Knights for an active life with God at the Bible Sto-ry Station, making their own art projects at the Craft Station, singing new songs at the Music Sta-tion, and playing games at the Recreation Station. Along the way, the Knights will hear about our mis-sion project and respond to a call for action!

Join us at MacPherson Presbyterian Church on Ju-ly 19-23, 2020 5:30-8:00 p.m. To register or to find out more about Knights of North Castle, call the church office at (910) 867-2113.

Sincerely, Your Knights of North Castle Team

The hope of the righteous will be gladness.

Proverbs 10:28 One of the great themes of Christianity is triumphant hope. Not just hope as in a distant, vague dream, but triumphant hope, the land of hope where all things end right. Amid the struggles and the storms and the sufferings of life, we can advance our thoughts be-yond today and see relief…triumph…victory. Be-cause, in the end, God does indeed win.

Charles R. Swindoll Are you ready to be used by God?

If you are looking for a way to touch lives with the hope of Jesus Christ, consider volunteering your ser-vices in the various outreach programs and missions supported by MacPherson Church. Get involved to-day. Our Church exists to introduce people to Jesus. Therefore, we constantly need to pour more energy and resources into building relationships and chal-lenge ourselves to reach people in our community, as well as participate in regional and global missions.

We have our Easter ‘Egg-stravaganza’ coming up in April, which is a community family focused event and need our Church members to give of their time and efforts to make this a wonderful Church sponsored community event.

We still need a team to go to Russia and participate in our Russian Partner Church’s Youth Camp in

The West Virginia Cabell/Lincoln Work Camp is June 21-27. It is a time of Christian fellowship while con-ducting home repairs for needy, low income people in the area. If you can, you need to go, adults and youth alike. The West Virginia Work Camp Trip information meeting will be Sunday, March 15; please attend.

Hither, Thither & Yon “Random Thoughts on Rabbit Trails & the Bible”

March is here and the Easter season is fast upon us, providing opportunities to revitalize our faith journey and share the good news of Jesus with our families, friends,

neighbors, and coworkers. The Lord calls all believers to go, near and far, share, teach and disciple all nations as our Lord and Savior directs us in Matthew 28:19-20. This is not an option; the operative word is GO – not – It would be a good idea or if it is convenient – nor – If it feels right but GO. That requires obedience, faith in the Lord’s call and commitment to do as our Savior directs. The hard part is actually backing up our words with ac-tion. Rolling up our sleeves and getting to the Lord’s work. It requires getting out of our comfort zone and “Just doing it!” The good news is that no matter how chal-

lenged and pressed we are, Jesus is with us always, to

the end of the age.

We don’t have to have the perfect plan or the super presentation or the polished elevator speech. All we need is the spiritual availability to say Yes Lord show me the Way. He will provide the wisdom, insight, words etc, etc, etc if we just Ask, Seek, Knock (ASK). It is that easy if we use the Keep It Simple Sweetheart (KISS) principle. We as a rule, make things harder and overthink things with too many What Ifs rather than in fervent prayer saying let’s go and do this thing God has asked us to do.

This is our opportunity to actively be Salt and Light for those in our circle of influence. Do we engage or just let the opportunity pass and watch our fellow sojourners miss the opportunity for salvation and a personal relation-ship with their creator? Just a Thought.

Yours, The Rabbit Tracker

March 2020 – Hope

Verse 1 – Hope in Challenging Times Romans 12:12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

Verse 2 – Hope in the Lord’s Strength Isaiah 40:31 But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Verse 3 – Hope in God’s Grace 1 Peter 1:13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Verse 4 – Hope in Our Love 1 Corinthians 13:13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Verse 5 – Pray for the Leaders of Habitat for Hu-

manity, Operation Inasmuch and Our City Psalms 127:1 Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it

labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the

city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
