The LV Quarterly June 2017 A message from the Superintendent To the Class of 2017 – A Fond Farewell and Thank you The final issue of the 2016-2017 school year LV Quarterly is dedicated to the Senior class and their parents. Our journey together started soon after your 8 th grade moving up ceremonies. You and I started the year off together, you being new to Lenape Valley as incoming freshmen, and I for the first time, as Superintendent/Principal. That year was the first year Lenape Valley offered a class to brush up on Algebra skills before starting school in September. I had the pleasure of working with about 20 of you students and could tell at the outset that this class was a class of terrific character. Equally important, I found that the parental support was unwavering. Students, there is not enough time here today to share with you all of your accomplishments as a class – whether they were known by the community at large, or whether they were personal in nature. You have exceeded expectations both academically and athletically. Let me remind of just a few: Among you we have the Football team who played in the state championship game at MetLife Members of the Marching band took 1st place at several competitions; earned the Marine Corp Award (presented by the United States Marine Corp) which is given to the best band of the day by the USMC and earned the “The Cadets Award for Excellence" for the highest achievement in the area of creativity, excellence, and overall effect. The Jazz Band received a Perfect score of 100 at the Great Adventure competition in May. The Mock Trial team made it to the semi-finals The Academic Quiz Bowl team won the league championship and went on to Nationals The class of 2017 had the first ever State Wrestling Champion, Wrestler named to the All American Team and Wrestler of the Year Among you is the DECA State Chapter President and seven students who qualified for the DECA National championships in Anaheim, California We have the Ice Hockey team who became the first Sussex County school to win the HAAS cup Our cheerleading team earned 4 th place in the nation We have our Swimmer of the Year among you A number of you have signed commitment letters to play a sport at your college Collectively, the class of 2017 had a record number of students apply to either a two-year or four-year college.

A message from the Superintendent

To the Class of 2017 – A Fond Farewell and Thank you

The final issue of the 2016-2017 school year LV Quarterly is dedicated to the Senior class and their parents. Our journey together started soon after your 8th grade moving up ceremonies. Let me remind of just a few:

Among you we have the Football team who played in the state

championship game at MetLife

Members of the Marching band took 1st place at several competitions; earned the Marine Corp Award (presented by the United States Marine Corp) which is given to the best band of the day by the USMC and earned the “The Cadets Award for Excellence" for the highest achievement in the area of creativity, excellence, and overall effect. The Jazz Band received a Perfect score of 100 at the Great Adventure competition in May.

The Mock Trial team made it to the semi-finals

on to Nationals

who qualified for the DECA National championships in Anaheim,

California

We have the Ice Hockey team who became the first Sussex County

school to win the HAAS cup

Our cheerleading team earned 4th place in the nation

We have our Swimmer of the Year among you

All together, the class of 2017 was among the hardest working, thought provoking, and school spirited class to grace the halls of Lenape Valley. Lenape Valley has a history of celebrating outstanding achievements of former graduates in our Wall of Fame and Athletic Hall of Fame. We celebrate the achievements that shine a positive light on our school and I am very confident that among you today is a future Wall of Famer or Hall of Famer. Parents, a very special Thank You to you. As the saying goes, the “Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”. You have a group of outstanding young people here before you. You have been models for them, teaching them how to treat others with respect and how to work hard. You have prepared them well for their next journey. The administrative team, the teachers, support staff and I, Thank You for your continued support – we could always count on you. Your children will be long remembered as being an awesome group of kids. In closing, Congratulations to all of you – students and parents alike. I wish you well as you begin the next phase of your journey.

Robotics

After a year of tough competition, the Lenape Valley Robotics closed out the 2016-2017 year in June with an awards celebration recognizing the many accomplishments of this year’s team members. At the beginning of the season, Team 9244 fielded a robot capable of basic maneuvers in this year’s FIRST® Velocity Vortex Challenge, consistently scoring well in the opening periods. By the end of the season, after enhancing the robot’s mechanical capabilities and refining the robot’s programming, Lenape Valley fielded a machine that challenged more experienced teams throughout northern New Jersey. Hoping to advance to post-season competition, Lenape arrived at the season’s final match with all systems go and reached the semi-finals. After the usual three-round match, the score was tied. Two exciting— and ultimately heartbreaking — overtime rounds ended the Patriots’ robotics season. While competition is a huge part of the program, gracious professionalism and community outreach are also part of the team’s activities. Students from a brand new team in Basking Ridge accepted Lenape’s invitation to join our practice sessions, exchange ideas and practice in a competitive setting. In March, more than 100 people attended our first ever STEM Night designed to introduce younger students and their parents to Lenape’s robotics program. Students in grades 5 through 8 spent a Friday night gaining hands-on experience designing squishy circuits, programming robots to accomplish specific goals and building Lego® robots. The evening even included a problem-solving challenge for parents, too. The team is gearing up for the September kickoff to next year’s competition season and fielding another robot and team to engage more Lenape Valley students and prepare them for the future.

Music in the Halls

Under the direction of David DiGrazia, the Jazz Band competed at Sparta High School on May 3, 2017, receiving best saxophone section honors. Senior Willie Bias received best soloist. For the second year in a row, the jazz band played at the Superintendents Round Table, May 19, 2017 at the Mohawk House.

In addition to receiving a superior rating, the Jazz Band earned a perfect score of 100 for the first time in school history while competing at Six Flags Great Adventure, May 26. The Marching Band performed for all middle schools on May 24, 2017 to promote new membership. The band also performed for all three townships on Monday, May 30, for the towns’ annual Memorial Day parades. On March 28, fourth grade band students came to Lenape to visit the symphonic band. Students had a chance to work together and perform various pieces for each other under the baton of David DiGrazia. At the production of The Wizard of Oz, seven highly skilled professionals played in the pit orchestra: two violins, a viola, a cello, a double bass, a trombone, and a oboe. There were also twenty students that participated. Several were teachers from other high schools and universities, two were current music majors, and one worked in the music recording industry. Students had an opportunity to listen to them play and ask questions. The Jazz Band earned accolades at the North Warren Jazz Festival (Gold rating) in Blairstown, NJ and Wednesday, May 3 at Sparta High School (Silver rating). In addition, Molly Clawson, Alex Swiderski, Julia Marra, Samantha Pezeur, Maddie Roth, Katie Nisbet, Josie Beyer, and Alex Poisseroux earned Best Saxophone section at both competitions, and William Bias garnered Best Soloist at the Sparta competition. The jazz band and chorus performed at the annual Senior Citizens luncheon Wednesday, March 29. Fifty-seven mixed chorus students and twenty-nine jazz band students performed pieces for the audience of seventy senior citizens who were in attendance. Lynda Veech’s choral classes hosted former LVR teacher Sandy Newcomer’s Harmony in Motion choral group March 30. Senior Samantha Lauridsen, junior Erin DeVito, sophomore Samantha Pezeur, and freshman Lillian Anderson were named March’s Students of the Month in the studies of the musical arts.

Gifted & Talented

Thirty-eight students in the Gifted and Talented program advised by Mrs. Jean Potters attended the B.D. Lenz

Trio’s performance of original compositions and covered standards February 23. Besides teaching math at

Lenape Valley, Mr. Lenz has been a prolific jazz guitarist whose ten albums has produced music featured on

Breaking Bad, Catfish, and Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations.

Ms. Kathleen Moody Simmons spoke on "The decision to act is the first stop in creating change” Friday, March

10 in the lecture hall. Using stories of some of her ancestors, she emphasized that we are all part of an ongoing

history

A Visit with the Congressman

Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen (11th

District, New Jersey) spoke with nearly fifty

students Lenape Valley from AP

Government and US History II classes.

A Literary Work….

The Mind Carpenter staff celebrated their latest edition of “Kairos” with a reception for faculty, staff, students and Board of Education members on June 6th. Mind Carpenter is advised by Marta Rivara. Co-editors, Sarah Canfield, Marissa Cardena and Melissa Sarcona along with the rest of the staff published a fine piece of work that will now be entered into both the Columbia and Scholastic Press contests.

Evening of the Arts

Seventeen acts performed at the school’s annual Evening of the Arts March 2. Jean Potters organized the event, while Lynda Veech accompanied performers on piano and sung “Imagine” with play director Michael Donahue. Melanie Edwish helped choose the performers and ran the soundboard.

World Language Village

The World Language Department hosted its annual Foreign Language Village on Tuesday, May 23rd. The Spanish IV-Honors and AP students in conjunction with Mrs. Glusiec’s class, planned and implemented 20 different stations simulating an immersion experience in Spain for students from Levels I, II and III. Underclassmen were required to check in at customs, exchange money at the bank and make purchases ranging from the supermarket to the florist to the restaurant. The Level IV-Honors and AP students created a series of scenarios requiring spontaneous responses and reactions from underclassmen. Scenarios were based on the simulated conversation exercise AP students must perform on the AP exam in May. Upperclassmen reviewed curriculum from the introductory levels to incorporate grammatical structures and vocabulary themes the underclassmen learned throughout the school year. This year’s village experience was redesigned by the World Language teachers so that students did not grade other students, per the request of the administration. Instead, teachers graded their students

in class, using a common rubric and interviewing students individually by working through a set number of scenarios.

Chalk Art

On May 15th, 2017, the students in Mrs. Carnegie's Art for the School and Beyond classes created large scale chalk artworks in the student parking lot as part of the annual LVR Chalk Art Event. Mrs. Carnegie's students worked in small groups to generate eleven chalk artworks. Along with Mrs. Carnegie, art teachers Mrs. Christopher and Mr. Orinski provided assistance to students as they produced their artworks. LVR staff and students came out throughout the day to see the chalk art process. Parents and

grandparents of Mrs. Carnegie's students stopped by to see the artworks as well during the school day and after school. This event is inspired by street painting festivals that are conducted all over the world and the work of anamorphic street artists such as Kurt Wenner and Julian Beever. Mrs. Carnegie loves this project because it provides her art students with an opportunity to teach the entire LVR community about this interesting art form.

Academic Quiz Bowl

The Academic Quiz Bowl team completed an undefeated run in the S.C.I.L. Academic Quiz Bowl Tournament with a 850-700 victory over Sparta to win the 2016-17 title. Led by senior captain Sean Kumar, the team earned first seeding, defeating fourth seed High Point before securing the title in a closely-contested match. The team includes seniors Shannon Fahsbender, Gabby Harrison, Sarah Najemian, Patrick Rzeszutko, and Justin Singh, and sophomores Milly Clawson, Ian Hall, Aaron Kumar and Sean Tracey. This title is the seventh in school history and the fourth under Christopher Kisatsky, now in his seventeenth year as the team's advisor. As a result, the team of Sean Kumar, Shannon Fahsbender, Gabby Harrison, Sarah Najemian, Ian Hall and Aaron Kumar competed at Questions Unlimited’s Nationals in New Orleans, May 27-30. Although the team did not succeed in making the playoffs (their collective preliminary opponents’ records was 27-9), the team showed well and experienced some of the city’s unique aspects, most notably the National WWII Museum.
