IntroductionA lubricant is a substance introduced to
reduce friction between moving surfaces. It
may also have the function of transporting
foreign particles and of distributing heat. The
property of reducing friction is known
as lubricity.

Engine ilMotor oil or engine oil is an oil used for lubrication of various
internal combustion engines. The main function is to lubricate
moving parts; it also cleans, inhibits corrosion, improves sealing,
and cools the engine by carrying heat away.

Hydraulic Oil
Hydraulic fluids, also called hydraulic liquids, are the medium
by which power is transferred in hydraulic machinery. Common
hydraulic fluids are based on mineral oil or water. Examples of
equipment that might use hydraulic fluids include excavators& backhoes, brakes power steering systems, transmissions,
garbage trucks, aircraft flight control systems, lifts & industrial
machinery.

Gear Oil
Gearoil is a motor oil made specifically for transmissions, transfer
cases, and differentials in automobiles, trucks, and other machinery.
It is of a higher viscosity to better protect the gears and usually is
associated with a strong sulfur smell. The high viscosity ensures
transfer of lubricant throughout the gear train.
Common Grades Used :-y 75W90
y 80W140
y 75W100

Axle Oil
Axle oil is a motor oil made specifically for axle, transfer cases,
and differentials in automobiles, trucks, and other machinery. It is
of a higher viscosity to better protect the excessive wear in the axle
and differential. The high viscosity ensures transfer of lubricant
throughout the differential.

Lubricating oil, or lube oil, is the most commonly used
lubricant because of its wide range of possible applications.
The two basic categories of lube oil are :-
y Mineral Refined from crude oil.
y Synthetic Hydrocarbon based polyglycols or ester oils.

ContdMineral oils are the most commonly used
because of the adequate supply of crude oil, they can
be produced in a wide range of viscosities.
Synthetic oils are especially used inapplications where mineral oils are ill-suited, like in
extremely high operating temperatures or where thelube oil must be fire resistant.

Contdy Raw material used Crude oil.
yAdditives used :-
y Lead or metal sulphide enhance lube oils ability toprevent galling and scoring.
y Poly ceramics(high molecular weight) Improvesviscosity
y
Nitrosomines Acts as anti-oxidants and corrosioninhibiters by neutralizing acids.

The processLube oil is extracted from crude oil which
undergoes a priliminary purification process
(sedimentation) before it is pumped into fractionatingtowers. The crude oil seperates into different fractionsaccording to the viscosity under high temperature.Lubricants are one of the fractions collected after thefractional distillation process from the fractionatingtowers.

Filteringand solvent extractionThis is a process used to remove unwanted
compounds by passing the fraction of lube oil through
several ultra-fine filters and solvent extraction dissolvesAromatics (which affects the lube oil viscosity if notremoved) present in the fraction. These processesremoves soluble and in-soluble impurities from thefraction.

Additives, Inspectionand packagingNow, the filtered fraction of oil is mixed with
additives to give the desired properties such as ability to
withstand low and high temperatures etc and the oiladditive mix is subjected to quality check to assess theproperties like viscosity, gravity, f lash and fire points etc.after which the final product (lube oil) is packed for salesand distribution.
