WE COME FROM STACKER CRANES

WE WANT TO GO ALL OUTINDEED STACKER CRANES STILL REPRESENT THE BASIS OF MOST OF OUR PROJECTS, BUT MEANWHILE MORE AND MORE CUSTOMERS ARE REALIZING COMPLETE INTRALOGISTICS SYSTEMS TOGETHER WITH LTW – QUALITY PREVAILS.

Internal logistics – more than just orders Yet good ideas alone do not get an engine working on site. When we implement projects as a general contractor, we of course have to coordinate a multiplicity of processes for material procurement right at the beginning.

Required components have to be ordered on time, stored temporarily if needed and provided to the assembly team on site according to the progress of the project – the core task of our internal logistics department which we would like to introduce at this point.

Currently the logistics team consists of nine employees in the departments Purchase and Disposition, Materials Logistics and Export – projects to be implemented globally with different rules and import regulations, shortterm schedules and subsuppliers to be coordinated call for exact and temporally perfectly planned implementation of purchasing management.

For this reason, the logistics team works closely with the Project Management and After Sales departments – beside the thoughtout system structure, short distances and constructive cooperation form the basis for smooth material procurement.

In order to keep cool even in precarious situations, complex activities have been integrated into the ERP system of the Doppelmayr group – efforts during implementation of the system quickly give a good return due to more transparency and the possibility of making order transactions even more efficient.

After purchasing, the components are integrat ed into the LTW products, partly put into operation and then shipped – or in close co operation with proven suppliers, sent to the building site directly.

Continuity through confidenceThe fact that LTW, despite the fast moving pro ject business, still works together with longterm suppliers, allows for steady continuity – the cooperative association is always in the foreground. Customers rely on us and we can rely on our suppliers. If every project participant has the same understanding of a collective implementation, we are already half way there.

On the following pages we would like to show you how we fill these values with life in reality – a general contractor project gives us many opportunities to do so.

Speaking of opportunities – visit us at the LogiMAT in Stuttgart: 19th – 21st February, Hall 1, Booth 133. We look forward to some interesting conversations!

broad parts of the intralogistics sector. Stacker cranes, vertical lifts, transfer cars and the like, are still manufactured at our parent company Doppelmayr; LTW tops this with its own software up to the entire warehouse management system. Components, which we do not produce ourselves, are contributed by longterm, wellproven partners and integrated into the projects by LTW. On demand, we bear responsibility for the whole scope of supply and are the sole contact person for the customers. This is how we have developed from the initial “part of the whole” to making a whole out of the sum of the parts.

As a general contractor LTW not only implements turnkey logistics systems, but in addition to the entire scope of supply often comes up with a 3D rendering for the facility plate. In the picture you can see the distribution center that LTW implemented for Fresenius Medical Care in two project steps – find further details about the project on pages 6 and 7.

In the early days, LTW mostly provided stacker cranes – hence one part of the whole. Thanks to steady delivery of highclass quality products, time schedules with precision landing and the fulfillment of assured services, more and more customers are trusting us with increasingly extensive tasks. For this reason we have been able to enlarge our product portfolio over the past few years and are currently covering

The employees of the LTW logistics department play an important role on the way from the idea to smooth project realization.

Achim Langegg, Head of the LTW logistics department

Dear Readers,

On behalf of the whole LTW company I would like to welcome you to the current issue of NEWS FLOW.

Happily, more and more customers are trusting us with overall responsibility for their projects. Particularly the examples of our complex inter national project implementations recently in Brazil, India or China reveal that the internal logistics of a company also make a major con tribution to successful realization on location.

Any blurs in the runup, however small, would increase with every kilometer our products cover until they reach the location.

We counter with on schedule and perfectly coordinated purchasing procedures and internally pull plenty of strings to ensure that the many single components generate a smooth material flow.

LTW is positioned broadly and solidly – this also involves solid internal logistics. We look forward to further construction sites.

We hope you enjoy this issue of NEWS FLOW! Representative of the whole logistics department

Achim Langegg, Department Head

SMOOTH PROJECTS.SECURE OPERATION.

Farsightedness paired with visual judgmentWith many years of experience, unbroken innovational spirit and the ability to sense fundamental customer needs, we have been able to win initially critical potential buyers as customers – often in a personal conversation.

Thanks to our broad knowledge in many different sectors there is a suitable answer to nearly every requirement, and when there is a constructive gettogether right at the be ginning of a project, the most straightlined solutions emerge.

Still we keep the cost in view, because we only install what is actually needed when looking at the planning horizon. Needless to say, we consider future expansion possibilities if desired; if your expansion then becomes an option, we would be happy to be counted in on it.

Lived quality globally convincingIn 2008 we expressed our demand as a complete supplier and general contractor with a

new, deliberately broadly defined company name, LTW Intralogistics. Fortunately,

more and more customers from different regions all around the

world take us by our word – our successful market entry in

China, India and Brazil is a clear confirmation of

your trust.

For LTW the role of general contractor bearing overall responsibility is the keystone to a devel opment, which was actually marked out a long time ago: Even when we only delivered stacker cranes for intralogistics projects, we didn’t con sider the finishing line to be crossed until every thing was working flawlessly and the customer was also content.

Software as key competenceOne milestone on the way from a component to a turnkey supplier was the market launch of our own warehouse control system in 1999. Straightforward, userfriendly and perfectly harmonized: Our Software is developed bottomup, starting with our precise knowledge of all

the individual components. That’s why the software plays a key role when com

bining all the system compo nents into a seamless

material flow.

EVERYBODY LIKES TO FEEL LOOKED AFTER IN BUSINESS VENTURES.

IF THE PARTNER ADDITIONALLY SCORES WITH INDIVIDUAL SOLUTIONS AND FEELS RESPONSIBLE FROM START TO FINISH, THE WAY IS ALREADY PAVED FOR A TRUSTING COOPERATION. During the past five years we have implemented

nearly 25 % of our projects as a general contractor for intralogistics. Customers noticeably appreciate more and more giving the coordination of intricate interfaces into external hands – in the form of LTW complete solutions.

Increasingly more often we get the response from our customers that our solutions are in deed not the cheapest ones during the offering phase, but in the longterm performance they turn out to be all the more favorable.

We are pleased about that and would like to convince even more customers. Your assignments may be highly complex – our approach is simple: highquality products, schedules with precision landing and the fulfillment of warranted services.

The LTW software is closely knit to the machine – in the final stage of the project this is a decisive advantage.

of 15 years, will also be interesting for new users. Highbay warehouse, conveyor technology and software will be designed to meet general purposes beyond the requirements of Fresenius concerning the layout as well as the details: generous height of pallets spaces, dual or triple storage systems, roller spacing of conveyors, hall bottom floor executed with sealed pans for storage of liquids liable to lead to water pollution.

The sustainability clearly offsets the additional costs for the investor. Fresenius Medical Care on the other hand has the advantage of a reasonable monthly rent.

98 % availability guaranteed for 15 years Storage and order picking of medical equip ment and materials require an especially high degree of reliability.

In this context it was a logical conclusion that in September 2007 LTW was awarded the contract as general contractor for intralogistics,

The ultimate criterion must be the availability for continuous operation. Jointly with Fresenius Medical Care, LTW elaborated on an innovative full service concept: LTW guarantees 98 % availability of the plant for the total rental term of 15 years.

To this aim LTW in close cooperation with Fresenius implements its own service team on site. All five LTW employees become acquainted with the plant right from the stage of assembling; at least two of them continuously monitor operation and use the time for preventive maintenance work in order to reduce maintenance to once per year.

Material flow The new distribution center brings together the two present central warehouses with different target regions and order structures. 70 % of the articles are exported as full pallets to 140 countries. In Central Europe the majority of articles are shipped as collated orders to backup warehouses, hospitals and individual patients. All in all, full pallet handling prevails – the ideal prerequisite for the high automation level of all material flow including automated small parts storage and fully automated identification point with pallet stacking and staging system.

Following the expansion of the highbay warehouse by three aisles in 2011, ten aislebound stacker cranes are operated in two shifts and permit approx. 6,400 pallet movements per day. A possible third shift offers a generous capacity reserve.

Beside the mechanical equipment, LTW also delivers the PLC control system for all components and for the warehouse control unit with interface to the SAPbased warehouse management. Such a solution from one source stands the test especially with regard to maintenance, troubleshooting and fault clearance.

In the face of dynamically growing flows of commodity, Fresenius Medical Care started at the beginning of 2006 to implement a comprehensive intralogistics project – taking into account further growth during the next 10 to 15 years.

The extrapolation resulted directly in the project of a highbay warehouse. The management clearly gave precedence to a consistently designed automated new building with generous reserves near Biebesheim am Rhein rather than to the alternative of an extension of the two existing conventional distribution centers.

The investment company Alpha Industrial, specializing in the design of logistics buildings, gives its support to an innovative solution: It’s the first time that an investor in Germany not only finances and rents a building but also finances and rents the appropriate technology.

The plan will only work out for the investor if the building, after expiry of a commercial lease

LTW service workshop in Biebesheim. On site, at least two LTW employees per shift assure smooth running of the installation.

THE CUSTOMER – FRESENIUS MEDICAL CARE BIEBESHEIM/GERMANY

Fresenius Medical Care is the world’s largest integrated provider of products and services for individuals undergoing dialysis due to chronic kidney failure, a condition that affects more than 2,100,000 individuals worldwide.Through its network of 3,135 dialysis clinics in North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa, Fresenius Medical Care provides dialysis treatment to 256,521 patients around the globe.

Fresenius Medical Care is also the world’s leading provider of dialysis products such as hemodialysis machines, dialyzers and related disposable products. Fresenius Medical Care is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FME, FME3) and the New York Stock Exchange (FMS, FMS/P).

Tailored to the first lessee, ideal for a third-party user: On the green lawn the investor Alpha Industrial erects an innovative distribution center.

including the construction of a silo and installation of an automatic sprinkler system.

According to Rainer Reichelt, who was involved in the project from the start as logistics planner, LTW submitted an attractive offer. “This was probably due to the slender structures and the close connection to Doppelmayr during production, a company who impressed us by its high level when we visited the premises in Wolfurt. From the point of view of technology, LTW convinced us by a robust rigid construction of the stacker cranes with simultaneous weight optimization.”

First expansion stage with seven stacker cranes. Extending the hall by three stacker cranes to 78,000 pallet spaces in 2011 was already planned as an option in the original project.

Thanks to the universal layout of the high-bay warehouse including the entire conveyor system, even disposable pallets can be stored.

DOUBLE SUCCESS AS AGENERAL CONTRACTOR

FLASHBACK TO THE YEAR 2008: IN GERMANY A NEW INVESTOR AND SERVICE MODEL CELEBRATES ITS PREMIERE. LTW STARTS UP THE FIRST TAILOR-MADE LOGISTICS CENTER WITH A THIRD-PARTY UTILIZABLE HIGH-BAY WARE-HOUSE AND ASSURES A PLANT AVAILABILITY OF 98 %.

THE MODEL STANDS THE TEST: AFTER THREE YEARS OF OPERATION, LTW IMPLEMENTS A FOLLOW-UP PROJECT.

Page 5: The LTW Intralogistics Magazine 7th Edition Spring …...nents and for the warehouse control unit with interface to the SAP based warehouse manage ment. Such a solution from one source

We would be pleased to give you information about optimization potentials of intralogistics, current best practice solutions and our products at one of the following trade shows and technical events:

LogiMAT 201319.02. – 21.02.13, Stuttgart, DEwww.logimatmesse.de

LTW projects should be implemented internally just as smoothly as on site. For this purpose an innovative document storage system in the form of a high rack was integrated into the head quarters between the old and new buildings during the expansion in 2002 – a huge advantage for efficient filing, as the balance clearly shows after 10 years of operation.

The 20 m high warehouse with a fully auto mated LTW stacker crane allows our employees to request e.g. a project file directly from their desk and collect it on one of the four levels in the building. Currently approximately 10,000 A4 files are stored in the LTW highbay warehouse;

the capacity can easily be doubled by an optional expansion. Beside project files, other bulky objects such as samples of goods can also be stored in the plastic boxes.

The intensive compacting of storage space in combination with very strict safety architecture for sensitive documents is also convincing on a large scale – this is proved by an LTW customer from Bangkok, who ordered a similar system after his visit to Wolfurt for more than 100,000 boxes and has successfully established his company on the market, providing storage space for documents from third parties.
