Dr. Louis A. Magnarelli

1945 – 2013

The Louis A. Magnarelli Fund commemorates the life and

work of Dr. Louis A. Magnarelli

Throughout his career at The Connecticut Agri-

cultural Experiment Station, Dr. Magnarelli

maintained his unwavering commitment to the

Station’s motto “Putting science to work for so-

ciety.”

Dr. Magnarelli was born in Syracuse, New York

on March 27, 1945 and graduated from West

Genesee Central Senior High School, Camillus,

New York, in 1963. He was a good baseball

player and had the opportunity to play profes-

sional baseball, but decided instead to attend

college. He graduated from the State University

of New York at Oswego in 1967, where he ma-

jored in biology and secondary education. Dr.

Magnarelli received his Master of Science De-

gree in biology in 1968 from the University of

Michigan. He returned to New York for a brief

career teaching high school biology. During the

summers, he fulfilled his interest in mosquitoes

and other biting arthropods by working as a pub-

lic health sanitarian for the Onondaga County

Health Department. In 1971, he began graduate

studies at Cornell University and received a

Ph.D. in medical entomology in 1975.

Dr. Magnarelli joined the Experiment Station in July

1975 and started his career in a laboratory in Jenkins

Building. Over the years, his research expanded,

with collaborators at the Station and throughout the

U.S. His work on ticks, tick-associated diseases,

and serological testing for vector-borne pathogens,

in addition to his many other accomplishments are

recognized internationally. Through the course of a

career that spanned four decades, he published over

218 scientific articles.

Dr. Magnarelli served as Chief

Entomologist and State Ento-

mologist from 1987-2004, Vice

Director from 1992-2004, and

was appointed the Station’s

eighth Director in 2004.

Regulatory responsibilities

came with these positions,

which required that Dr. Mag-

narelli establish and enforce

quarantines to protect Connecti-

cut. He fully recognized the

economic impacts these decisions had on citizens

and always listened intently to those who voiced

their concerns at hearings. During his career, he

oversaw quarantines on many insect pests, plant

pests, and plant pathogens. He capably juggled ad-

ministrative responsibilities with his research.

The Louis A. Magnarelli Memorial Fund will be

used by the Station’s Board of Control to create a

physical memorial on the New Haven campus to

honor Dr. Magnarelli and to support the Board of

Control’s Louis A. Magnarelli Post-Doctoral Re-

search Fellowship program.

“Dr. Magnarelli was a pioneer in the field of

medical entomology and is internationally re-

nowned for his prodigious research in identify-

ing and treating Lyme disease. He was an in-

dispensable resource to the State of Connecti-

cut in the areas of insect-borne diseases and

pathogens, infestation, pests, and parasites.”

—Dannel P. Malloy, Governor of the State of

Connecticut

“Lou made it a habit to speak with me usually

twice or more every week on plant diseases and

pests. He's perhaps the most responsive and car-

ing public servant I've ever worked with.”

—Robert Heffernan, Executive Director,

Connecticut Green Industries
