The Lakers were founded in 1947 by Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen. They purchased the recently disbanded Detroit Gems of the NBL (National Basketball League) for $15,000. The team was to be located in Minneapolis, which is known for it’s lakes, hence the name Lakers. While in Minneapolis, the Lakers won five championships behind one of the all time great centers, George Mikan (whom Mike and Ike’s candy is named after).

During the 1960 offseason, the Lakers became the first west coast team when owner Bob Short decided to move the team to Los Angeles
