The Lord Of The Flies
Tribe Project
Welcome To BR IslandAttention, Attention. This is the captain speaking- please, may I have
your attention.
We have been working day and night for two months trying to regain communication with the United States. We have failed. We have run out of food and water. We will all die unless we fight for our lives.
The Island we have landed on is called BR. We will be forced to settle here and start a new life.
Time is running short; after five days, we will run out of food and water. You will choose a group to work with and complete the task assigned. Obviously, it is in the best interests of the group for you to work in a group that best uses your unique talents, even if it does not mean working with your friends.
When we have completed our work, we will celebrate our success and thank all the members of the community for working cooperatively to make our new life beautiful.
Thank you. Over and out.
TasksYou and your group will complete to accomplish all of the following
tasks:
You must develop a survival manual which includes a map of the island, tools needed to build shelters, and ways to get food and water.
You and your group must decide on a shell that will be used to call the group together. You will make a poster with a drawing of your shell and how it is used and its significance.
You will create a human rights poster detailing the rules and rights of everyone on the island and the consequences for breaking the rules.
You will also create a tribe name and flag for your group.
Survival Manual Steps
1. A creative cover with clear titles, eye-catching
picture (or drawing) and author's names. (Hint:
Look at a book cover for layout ideas).
2. Use the Web sites listed to gather information
about the elements of survival:

http://www.safetystore.com/
mapquest.com
graphicmaps.com
Survival Manual
3. Use the gathered information to make a survival manual. The key will be to find three to five main ideas for this manual (don't try to do too much or it will be hard to read). A basic manual would have the following chapters:
SUPPLIES: List recommended supplies (You have nothing with you but the clothes you are wearing.)
STEPS: Steps you would take in order to survive
THINGS TO AVOID: Dangerous things to avoid on the Island
MAP: Map of Island including where to get water
4. Get the materials needed and begin laying out the manual. • Be sure to organize the information in the order it would be
used in reality. (For example: "find some smaller twigs to light before you put the larger branches on the fire").
• Be sure to involve every member of the group and listen to their input. Divide the job into parts and put someone in charge of each element, either by chapters or by job (writing, drawing, cover, table of contents).
5. Assemble the parts into a finished version. • Be sure to have all members read the manual to check for
mistakes and readability. It is better to do the final work at school, don't rely on one person to do it at home!
Keep it where everyone has the ability to work on it.
Shell Poster The shell (Conch or other) is very important to your
group. You must design a poster of your shell which should include the scientific name of the shell chosen, a background of where the chosen shell is found, its signficance and how it will be used. www.seashellcity.com
www.seashellworld.com
You will have to purchase your own poster board for this project.
Human Rights
Develop a poster detailing the rules and
rights of the inhabitants of your island.
Also include the consequences for
breaking the rules. Use the internet to
gather information about human rights.
You will also need to purchase your own
poster board for this project.
Tribe flag
Now you will get into groups and create
the following:
A tribe name that somehow represents your
group.
A flag with your tribe name to displayed in the
room representing your tribe.
On the back of your flag please write why you
chose the name, symbols, and colors.
