The Shepherd Knows His Sheep Gospel Reflection Based on John 10:1-10

Introducing himself as the Good Shepherd of his flock, Jesus makes three claims in today’s Gospel.

    1. He knows his sheep and his sheep hear his voice. Just as the Palestinian shepherds knew each sheep of their flock by name, and the sheep knew their shepherd and his voice, so Jesus knows each one of us, our needs, our merits and our faults. He loves us as we are, with all our limitations, and he expects us to return his love by keeping his words. He speaks to us at every Mass, through the Bible, through our pastors, through our parents, through our friends and through the events of our lives. “God whispers to us in our pleasures, He speaks to us in our consciences, and He shouts to us in our pain!” (C.S. Lewis).

    2. He gives eternal life to us, his sheep by receiving us into his sheepfold and giving us Faith through Baptism, and then he strengthens that Faith in Confirmation. He supplies food for our souls in the Holy Eucharist and in the Divine words of the Holy Bible. He makes our society holy by the Sacraments of Matrimony and the priesthood (Holy Orders).

    3. He protects his sheep by placing them in the loving hands of his Almighty Father. Without him to guide us and protect us, we are an easy prey for the spiritual wolves of this world, including Satan and his minions.

Through today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches one of the central aspects of the ministerial priesthood: the priest as shepherd. It means that a priest is one who, by his consecration, lives for others. The title, “Father”, like the title, “Shepherd,” expresses a relation of loving service to others in everything, from the most sacred ministries to the most trivial chores... Let us pray for vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate and the consecrated life so that we may have more good shepherds to lead, feed and protect the Catholic community. Let us remember that the duty of fostering vocations is the concern of the whole believing community, and we discharge that responsibility primarily by living exemplary Christian lives.

Prayer for VocationsWorld Day of Prayer for Vocations occurs on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday. The day is set aside to publicly fulfill the Lord’s instruction to, “Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest” (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2).

God our Father, You made each of us to use our gifts in the Body of Christ. We ask that You inspire young people whom you call to priesthood and consecrat-ed life to courageously follow Your will.

Send workers into Your great harvest so that the Gospel is preached, the poor are served with love, the suffering are comforted, and Your people are strengthened by the sacraments.

We ask this though Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mother Teresa: On Holiness In order to be saints, you have to seriously want to be one.

Saint Thomas Aquinas assures us that holiness “is nothing else but a resolution made, the heroic act of a soul that surrenders to God.” And he adds: “Spontaneously we love God, we run towards him, we get close to him, we possess him.”

Our willingness is important because it changes us into the image of God and likens us to him! The decision to be holy is a dear one.

Renunciation, temptations, struggles, persecutions, and all kinds of sacrifices are what surround the soul that has opted for holiness.

Prayer to St. Jane Frances de Chantal

Protection from IsolationLoving Jane Frances de Chantal,

please ask our dearest Lord to protect all of those who

have been isolated. I pray for those without family

and friends to support them and for those in my life that I have kept far away from my heart. Pray to our loving Father that those who are standing alone outside will find a kind shelter

under the grace of God. Amen.

Jane Frances Fremiot’s mother died when Jane was a little over a year old, and she was then raised

single-handedly by her father. At the age of 20, she married

the Baron de Chantal, and they had four children together. Her

husband was killed while hunting and Jane was a widow at the age

of 28. With nowhere else to go, the young mother was forced to live with her father-in-law, who was known to be a very unpleasant man. In 1610 she founded the Congregation of the Visitation

for widows and women who did not want to take on the complete

life of the orders. Her religious order grew, and eventually Jane Frances de Chantal went on to

found 69 convents. [Her feast day is celebrated on December 12.]

This gospel reading reminds me of the stained glass window at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon where I served for three years. It reminded me whether I brought peace and security “like a shepherd” in my priesthood as I celebrated Mass.

“Shepherding” can teach us some things about God and our relationship with Him. We hear about God and Jesus as shepherd of His people throughout Sacred Scripture (Psalm 23:1; Psalm 80:1; Matthew 18:12).

At the end of the day, shepherds would bring his sheep into shelter. The sheep would know the shepherd’s voice and came to their shepherd whenever the shepherd would call back to shelter he was literally their “door” which the sheep had to pass.

Just as a shepherd watches and protects his sheep, Jesus is our “good shepherd” who stands watch over all of us as our guardian.

Jesus also laid down His life for us- we were the sheep he saved, and showed all of us that we need to lay down our entire lives for God!

May we fully submit ourselves to God and may Our Lord lead us to true peace and safety at all times!

    • Pray for Pope Francis and all those who lead the Church, especially Bishop Brennan

    • Pray for those affected by natural disasters and acts of violence

    • This Sunday, May 3, is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Pray for our seminarian, Aaron Yohe, and those who are discerning a call to priesthood or religious life

    • Pope Francis’ prayer intention for the month of May is for deacons. We pray that deacons (especially Deacon Minner), faithful in their service to the Word and the poor, may be an invigorating symbol for the entire Church.

    • Pray for those who would have received the Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time this weekend- just a little bit more patience!

    • We also want to announce the resumption of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confessions will be offered regionally and by appointment. That is, for our deanery, confessions will be heard at St. Mary’s, St. Joseph Cathedral and St. Patrick’s. To make an appointment with me, simply contact me at 614-445-9668. You can contact one of the other parishes to make an appointment there: St. Joseph: 614 224-1295, ext. #2; and St. Patrick: 614 240-5910.

    • Don’t forget next Sunday, May 10 is Mother’s Day!• The month of May is dedicated to The Blessed Virgin

Mary- may we (especially parishioners at St. Mary’s) never forget the Resurrection of her Son she was worthy to bear!

  • Finance Committee Meeting Minutes Monday, April 27

    th, 2020

    • Results & Key Statistics

o March 2020 Financial Statements Salaries are higher due to paying the former employees while also paying the

salaries for Kaiser and Deacon Minner; this should improve in April. Offertory is down- is there anything that we should be doing to try to get this

back on track? We are not the only church who is struggling with this, and we are

taking precautions and proactive measures. Payroll Protection Program loan for $427K was approved. Recommendation was made to have Tim Sprosty make a video about

offertory and a capital campaign update and post this to our social media sites

All other members were in support of approving these documents; documents were approved

o Capital Campaign Update – see worksheet 76% has been collected to date $1.63MM is outstanding

    • Old Business o Renovation Donor Acknowledgement

Mo Meuse has agreed to work with Deacon Minner to reconstitute the old committee that was in place to develop a plan to recognize the renovation donors.

Mo and Roger are also formulating a plan regarding what to do with the former/original plaques

o Events Update Gala: Will be held remotely beginning June 5th Homecoming:

Finance Council made a recommendation to postpone/cancel the Homecoming Festival

All other members were in support of canceling the Homecoming Festival; recommendation was made

    • New Business o School Tuition Update

As of 4-27-20, the following approximate amounts need to be collected: • K-8 Tuition: $147,866.91 • Ed. Choice: $58,135.96 • PS Tuition: $95,401.77 • SACC: $24,417.89 • Service Hours: $18,417.90

Work is being done to not only collect funds, but also implement new processes and structures/programs to prevent this problem in the future.

    • Items to be postponed until next meeting o Policy regarding maintenance staff setting up for events o Model for Sermon on the Amount to be revisited in June

  • Parish Council Meeting Minutes

    Monday, April 20th

    , 2020

    Old Business

    • Parish Survey Update– Brian Collins o Recommendations to Father from the parish survey committee

For the most part, people are pleased with what is happening in the parish. There could be more opportunities for people to connect and stay involved in

the parish. Ideally, more money would be allocated to different groups to sponsor

events/organizations, but because offertory has decreased, there are fewer funds to allocate toward these efforts.

o When will results be published? Kayla will create pdf of results and will send this to Brian. We will be on hold to make action steps with the information from the survey

until the next Parish Council meeting.

    Committee Reports

    • Welcoming Committee- Sandra Grosko o No meeting. o Need to focus be on how to welcome people once the church reopens

    • Spiritual Committee- Mo Meuse o The committee met and reviewed the videos, and they recommend the Christ’s Life

program. The start of this program is on hold until church reopens.

    • Deanery Report- Father Vince o No meeting.

    • Events Planning Committee Report- Mike Custer o No meeting. o Hopefully the Homecoming Festival and Oktoberfest will be able to take place

Parish Council discussed whether or not it was feasible to plan on having this event. The consensus was to wait until May to decide if the festival is possible. If a decision must be made before then, the council would recommend canceling.

Most deposits/permits have not been submitted. o Smaller events to bring people and money in could be helpful. o Possible “Thank You” event for campaign donors, at the one-year anniversary

This is something that definitely needs to be addressed, but having an event is not possible right now.

Other options: pre-printed card with heartfelt message, pictures, and Mass offering

Action steps: Mo will communicate information to Roger from previous recommendations, ideas, etc.

    • Finance Committee- Steve Holleran o Capital Campaign is about 75% complete o BAA is pushed back to late June, early July o Offertory is less than what is expected

  • New Business • Paycheck Protection Program – Deacon Roger

o St. Mary’s has applied; monies used for payroll and utilities may be forgiven. o Without this we may have to furlough employees.

    • Should hear something next week. o We still must turn every stone to collect outstanding tuition, pledges, and

offertory. • Potential Rental Opportunity – Deacon Roger

o Darby Creek Nursery proposed renting the rectory lawn for $2,500 per month for May and June; this is being investigated.

    Additional Topics for Discussion

    • How is the Corona Virus impacting St. Mary Parish – Father Vince o How can parish council help to plan for the future re-opening of the church?

What will be needed (masks, sanitizer, closing off space in pews to adhere to social distancing, etc…)

    • The Bishop is forming a committee in regards to that process. This committee will provide a proposal, which the Parish Council will use to move forward.

o Priests are attempting to create a strategic plan- there has been concern about the well-being of the priests, especially those who are elderly. Main question is, “How are we going to come back from this?” This may look like a ‘soft opening’ with Masses at one site.

o Parish Council must think about how we can welcome the other parishes so that we can be accommodating to them.

Be prepared for impromptu meetings with other parish councils to help fold them into our community.

    • How can parishioners give to the food pantry with cash, gift cards, or food items? o Saint Ladislas is delivering food

Could we print this in the bulletin since there are so many currently in need?

    • Yes
