What a great day it was for the first home game of the season two
weeks ago. Over 17,000 supporters packed Bluetongue Stadium to
watch the Mariners take on the Wanderers, and the atmosphere was
electric. In fact, over 100,000 people went through the gates across the
first five Hyundai A-League fixtures – a new record. While we are all
passionate Mariners supporters it is important that the other Clubs are
strong as well, as we can only be as strong as the entire competition.
As an administrator at the grassroots level of the game on the Central
Coast, it’s great to see the game getting stronger at all levels. Central
Coast Football (CCF) continues to work with the Mariners to look at
ways to grow the sport in the region. One of the latest initiatives,
Free FC, allows kids to come and have a kick and experience the game
we love. Kids can sign-up to participate in this excellent program run
by the International Football School and the Mariners, with the support
of CCF at www.MarinersDevelopment.com.au. It is important for the
sustainability of the game at all levels that we continue to look at ways
to bring kids and other non-football people into the fold and help
them enjoy the game.
I know Mike Charlesworth and his team at the Mariners are working on
some exciting initiatives to make the matchday experience fun for all.
They want to try and attract those that may not already know what
a great event going to a game at Bluetongue can be. Put simply, we
are very lucky as proud residents of this great region to have a team
in a national competition that we can call Champions. Those who are
passionate about the Central Coast, I encourage you to get behind the
Mariners!

DID YOU KNOW? Each Mariners player is an ambassador for a local Central Coast Club. Nick Fitzgerald is the Avoca FC ambassador.
The Central Coast Mariners Youth team will
commence the Foxtel National Youth League
2013/14 season in Tuggerah tomorrow. Kick-off
against Adelaide United Youth at the Club’s Centre
of Excellence (1 Bryant Drive, Tuggerah) is at
10:30am. Admission is FREE.
The junior Mariners will be mentored by two of
the Club’s former players this season. Indeed,
2013 Hyundai A-League Grand Final hero Patrick
Zwaanswijk is Youth team Head Coach, while
foundation Mariner Andre Gumprecht is welcomed
back on board as Zwaanswijk’s assistant.
The Club is pleased to announce the 15 players
signed by Zwaanswijk for season six of Australia’s
premier youth competition: Adrian Vlastelica, Daniel
McFarlane, David Bradasevic (GK), Dillon Vorster,
Dominic Ferguson, Jacob Esposito, Jesse Curran,
Joshua Bingham, Joshua Forbes, Lachlan Everett,
Liam O’Dell, Nathan Verity, Patrick Dixon (pictured),
Steve Whyte, and Tonu Liiband (GK).
Seven players in the Club’s Foxtel NYL 2013/14
squad played for Central Coast Mariners Academy
(CCMA) this year.
“Our main focus has been on signing as many
young local players as possible, so we have
the best chance to develop them into Hyundai
A-League professionals over the next few seasons,”
Zwaanswijk said.

When John Hutchinson leads Central Coast out onto Bluetongue Stadium this
afternoon, tens of thousands of football fans around the Coast, country and
indeed the world will sit up and take notice of our teams eye-catching strips.
In partnership with Mingara Recreation Club and the Cancer Council, our
boys will this afternoon be wearing all pink strips for only the second time
in Mariners (and Hyundai A-League) history. The lads first donned the highly
noticeable, bright getups in round two last season when Perth Glory came
to town. That day, Daniel McBreen scored the first of his 19 goals league goals
last term as Graham Arnold’s men won 1-0.
While the players will be doing everything they can to ensure they make it
two wins from two matches in pink this afternoon, it’s even more significant
to consider why the players are helping the Club make this vibrant, visual
statement. Fact is, every day 50 women around Australia are diagnosed with
breast or a gynaecological cancer – a truly awful statistic. So, as the foremost
sporting organisation on the Central Coast, we’re taking the lead alongside
Mingara Recreation Club to help the Cancer Council achieve their goal of
raising $9.4 million for cancer research, prevention and support in 2013.
There are a number of ways you can give to the cause, and help us raise
more than we did last year ($18,668). Firstly, each player’s jersey will be
signed and auctioned off on eBay by Mingara. Next week, fans can log on to
bid for a slice of Mariners history! Secondly, supporters will see a number of
Pink Ribbon Day volunteers in and around Bluetongue Stadium today – if
you can give a little, please do! Thirdly, the Club has 500 pink kits at our
merchandise stalls today. $10 from each pink jersey sold will be donated
directly to the Cancer Council. And finally, anyone can log on to
www.PinkRibbonDay.com.au to make a tax-deductible donation.
Enjoy the match, and cheer loudly and proudly for your boys in PINK!

ADVERTISE IN
He was a foundation Mariner and played over 200 competitive matches for Central Coast, but these days Alex Wilkinson is busy thwarting the best advances of attackers from K-League Classic – the top division of football in Korea Republic. Ben O’Neill caught up with the former Mariners skipper turned Jeonbuk Hyundai defender to find out how he’s enjoying his football with the men from the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.
Wilko, you picked up your first piece of silverware in Korea Republic last weekend, albeit a runners up medal. Tell us about the experience of playing in the Korean FA Cup Final against Pohang Steelers.
It was a great experience. The FA Cup over here is held in high regard because the winner gets a place in the Asian Champions League the following year. We had a crowd of around 30,000 which created a great atmosphere. The game was a tight contest and finished 1-1 at full time and extra time so it went to penalties. Unfortunately we lost the shootout 4-3. I’m cursed when it comes to penalty shootouts!
Jeonbuk Hyundai are currently right in contention to win the 2013 K-League Classic. Does just missing out on winning the FA Cup Final perhaps provide the team with even more desire to win the league?
Yes. With seven games to go we are two points off first place so we are in a pretty good position to have a good chance at winning the league. It would have been great if we had won the FA Cup and had a chance at doing the double but that wasn’t to be unfortunately. I think now we will be even more determined to finish the league off well. We finished second last year so I hope we can go one better this year.
Finish top three in K-League Classic and Jeonbuk will qualify for the 2014 AFC Champions League, like the Mariners have. Love a trip back to Bluetongue?
I would love a trip back to Bluetongue as it would mean I would get to come home and see all my family and friends! Obviously playing against the Mariners would be a bit of a strange experience for me but who knows, it could well happen if we can manage to qualify.
The other foreigners in the Jeonbuk squad are Brazilian and Belgian. How do you spend your time away from the training pitch and is communication difficult for you? How have you adjusted?
I am pretty lucky that one of the Brazilians and the Belgian both speak English. They both have families with young children, which is great for my wife also. When we aren’t training we tend to spend a lot of time together. The town I live in isn’t that big but it has everything we need. Communication with the Korean players and coaches can be difficult sometimes but it gets easier with time and the more you get to know them.
You have your wife, Brooke, and young son, Luca, with you in Korea Republic. How have you and your family adjusted to life in Jeollabuk-do?
At first it was a little difficult adjusting to life over here. Especially seeing Luca was only eight weeks old when we moved over here. It was made easier at the time by having Matt Simon and his fiancée Ange over here. We lived only an hour from each other so we would catch up as much as we could. Now we have adapted to the Korean culture and food and are quite settled. Luca is in day care and loves the Korean food, which is pretty funny. The people are so friendly here and really make it a lot easier to settle in.
To what extent have you kept tabs on the Mariners and the Hyundai A-League since you departed in mid-2012?
I have been keeping a really close eye on the Mariners since I left. Obviously I’m still good mates with a lot of the boys so I keep in regular contact with them. I also try and watch most of their games online, which is good. They had a great season last year and I hope this one is just as successful.
Trent Sainsbury was at the Club while you were here, and now the team has other young backs in Zac Anderson, Brent Griffiths, Hayden Morton, Michael Neill and Storm Roux. Bright futures?
Definitely. Lately the Mariners have been bringing through a lot of young talent and these guys are no different. Sains, Zac and Brent have all had quite a bit of experience in the league now and its great to see the other young guys coming through pushing for first team games. Arnie (Graham Arnold) has shown continually he is not afraid to play young guys so these players know that if they are doing well they will get their chance.
Did you watch the Club’s 2013 Grand Final win? If so, where? And what were your emotions before, during and after the game?
Yes I watched the game online. I had been speaking to the boys in the week leading up to the Grand Final and they all seemed quietly confident which was good. During the game I was actually really confident. I thought once they got that first goal the result was never in doubt. They controlled the match and never really let Wanderers in with a sniff. After the game is was just so happy for the boys. That win had been a long time coming and I was just so happy for them and the Club that they would get the recognition they deserve.
Old Boy UpdateOne-on-one with ALEX WILKINSON
Two games, two goals, one assist.
Marcos Flores is already proving to be
an extremely important off-season
recruit for Central Coast Mariners,
but it’s today – against one of his
former Clubs – that the Recon-
quista-born midfielder will truly
be eager to impress.
Indeed, our Argentine attacking
ace spent two fruitful seasons
with Adelaide United between
2009 and 2011, scoring a
noteworthy nine goals and
making eight assists in 29
appearances for the Club. And, it
was during his time in the city of
churches that Flores became a household name
for Hyundai A-League fans from Point Clare to
Perth, as he dazzled crowds on his way to being
named the competition’s best player in 2011.
Wearing Central Coast’s number 10 shirt, look
out for Flores’ incisive, purposeful passes
to the likes of Mitchell Duke (#9) and Matt
Simon (#19), as well as his interplay with fellow
midfielders Michael McGlinchey (#14) and
Mile Sterjovski (#21). When on song, the fancy

Flores is considered to be one of the Hyundai
A-League’s best players, and he can
certainly keep his composure too –
Flores kept his cool to convert two
late penalties to earn the Mariners a
2-2 draw away to Melbourne Heart
last Saturday.
It doesn’t matter if your old Club
is Union de Santa Fe or Umina
United, when you come up against
your former team there’s always
that little bit extra motivation to
play well (and win!). Flores will
have fire in his belly and passion in
his play today, just three days after
his 28th birthday!
(Happy Birthday, Marcos!).

It’s been a busy start to the season and we have been working hard on the important things to ensure the best start to the OSC.
We have well over 100 paid members including 10 junior members. We will be taking new members at the game on Saturday so look out for us before and after the game to join up. We’ve also adopted the name “The Crew” after you told us that’s the name you liked the best, and we’re working with Soccer5s in Tuggerah to create a great place to watch our away games with other fans.
After the first home match of the season we provided feedback to the Mariners about the match day experience.
Some of the suggestions we made included:
More activity and interest outside the stadium as you approach
Wider information regarding post game member functions
Making the best possible use of our new cannon
Introducing and involving the Pirate and his cohort the Admiral
Increasing the number of The Loose Cannon match day papers available (Ed: Circulation of The Loose Cannon will increase from 1,100 copies to 2,500 copies from Sunday 10 November)
The re-introduction of the fans announcing the player’s names
Increasing home match advertising
Both the OSC and the Mariners value and use all of your feedback, so if you have any ideas or thoughts, please don’t hesitate to email us at: [email protected]

Did you know Central Coast Mariners, like Western Sydney Wanderers and Newcastle Jets, sponsor a powerchair football team? Powerchair football is one of the fastest growing sports for powered wheelchair users around the globe. A competitive, challenging team game, powerchair football combines the skill of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair itself.
Recently, two of Central Coast Mariners powerchair players, Chris Turnbull and Chris Suffield, were selected to represent New South Wales at the Australian Championships.
Turnbull and Suffield’s performances at the Australian titles gained them selection in the Australian Powerchair Football Team, known as the Poweroos, for a test match against New Zealand.
Turnbull went on to score an impressive hat trick – the first ever for the Poweroos – in an 11-0 win.
Turnbull has now played nine international matches for the Poweroos, while Suffield has played four.
