THE LOIRE RIVER
The Loire is the biggest river in France. It goes through our
town. It is 1,013 km long. It is a very natural river with lots of
animals.
There are lots of castles next to
the Loire which are
called The
castles of the Loire.
The « Loire à vélo » is a project of 800 km of biking tracks for walkers or bicycles, you can discover the landscape...
It is good because from Montlouis we can go to Tours by bike and it is really nice and easy because there are lots of
small paths and we can see the river.
In the Loire there are lots of animals:
- some beavers
- lots of coypus (water rats)
- birds
- small and big fish
In the Loire you can canoe, fish, bath, walk or camp on its banks
but it is not recommended to swim in the Loire because
there are shifting sands and strong currents.
Before to travel on the Loire, we used
« gabares » (flat bottom boats ) because the
Loire is not very deep in some places. In the middle ages the Loire was used to transport
goods.

In Montlouis there is a building which is called the House of the Loire, inside there is a small
museum about the Loire, they organise lots of projects around the Loire river. You can go there
with your family.
