What a great June we had. A few of the June highlights are:

Six of our members completed their Auxiliary Communications class and passed the test.

Congratulations to Eric Weinbaum, Mike Furnald, Jim Goldasich, Bret Ribotsky, Steve Totty, and Philip

Vale. Job Well Done!

Several of our members attended the preparation and review class for the QE mission. The QE mission

was successfully completed on June 23, 2012. Congratulations to Rob Lambie, Tom Thayer, Andrea

Rutherfoord, Liliane Meghabghab for successfully passing their three year crew recertification. In

addition Bret Ribotsky passed his initial crew certification. A special thanks to Tom Kegan (FSO-MT)

for organizing, preparing, and presenting the review class for our participating members. GREAT job to

all.

On 6/23 we held our About Boating Safely course to the public and new members. It was a great

success and we had approximately 27 people attend the class. Hats off to our FSO-PE Jim Goldasich for

his excellent organizational skills structuring the class and the instructors to teach the different sections

of the class. I would also like to thank all of the instructors that participated.

6/23 was a challenge for our flotilla with both the About Boating Safely and QE charting and dockside

oral exams being scheduled at the same time at the same location. It is remarkable how well our

members participated in the organizing and setting up our base to accommodate both activities. A

special thanks to Liliane Meghabghab for everything she does to support our organization. In fact

maybe we should change her multiple titles to one title “FSO-Everything”

I also appreciate and would like to thank the fifteen members that attended the introduction class of

Auxiliary Patrol. This should be a very interesting class and contain a lot of learning opportunities for

not only our new members but also our experienced members.

Now that we’ve had our first reminder of tropical storms (the winds and rain from Debby), it’s time to

get prepared for the hurricane season, including updating your contact information. Members, please

keep in mind that if you have moved or changed email/phone/work numbers in the last year, you should

let us know so that we can update them in the database. The best way is to print a 7028 form and enter

just the information that has changed. You can leave this form in Len Schwartz’ mailbox at the base, or

scan it and send it to him. If you have already updated your information, thank you! If you have

questions, just ask!

I saw the beginning of the AUXPAT class on Wed, June 27, and it was good to see so many new

members enrolled and ready to tackle this important class (great preparation for Crew training). There is

still time to enroll – just contact Tom Kegan at [email protected] so that he can add you to the

class.

We are looking for more people to help with VEs at Silver Palm boat ramp on the first Saturday of the

month. Ted Lutjen, our FSO-VE is a snowbird and has not been able to coordinate the monthly activity.

If you are VE certified, please make an effort to show up and continue completing VEs during the

summer months. Actually, you can go to the ramp any day, any time, and do VEs. We will all appreciate

it.

Also, we need a few more people to help with the ABS classes that meet one Saturday a month. On June

23, we had a full house of students (23) – congratulations to the successful contacts by Jim Goldasich

and public announcements by Philip Vale. If you are interested in becoming involved in this gratifying

program, please see Jim or me. You do not have to be an instructor to help – you just need a welcoming

smile.

Thank you to all the new members who showed up for the workshop June 28. Tom Kegan did his typical

fine overview of the Auxiliary and showed how to become more active. Len Schwartz reviewed how to

complete the 7029. If you missed it, watch for the next quarterly workshop.

Meeting reminder: At our Flotilla meeting on July 5, Art Zimmerman will give a brief overview of the

Auxiliary Manual chapter on Protocol. Those of you who go to Station Lauderdale will especially

benefit from the review.

June has been a very active mouth for the Flotilla. The boat crew class ended

its classroom tasks and started on-the-water training in preparation for the QE audit on June 23. Six

members took part in audit, with 4 members passing 3- yr-recertification: Andrea Rutherfoord, Ron

Lambie, Tm Thayer, and Liliane Meghabghab. Bret Ribotsky passed his initial certification as crew.

Congratulations to all.

Our Auxiliary Communications (AUXCOM) class finished with 6 members passing the exam: Eric

Weinbaum, Mike Furnald, Jim Goldasich, Bret Ribotsky, Steve Totty, and Philip Vale. Congratulations

to all. The Telecommunications course is next for these members, and their books are being ordered.

This includes the sign-off tasks for Radio-room procedures.

Next, the Auxiliary Patrols (AUXPAT) class started on June 27, 2012, with 15 members in attendance

taking this course. The lead instructor is Bill Bartley. He also has been tasked to rewrite it for the

national Auxiliary. The next class meets Wednesday, July 11, at 7 PM.

On June 28, a New Member orientation class was held with 15 members in attendance. Part of the class

taught how to get online to set an Auxiliary password. Len Schwartz (SO-IS) gave an overview of how

to complete a 7029. A few went into the office to get their first 7029 submitted – this is a great start.

We are planning over next QE Audit for some Saturday in August. We still have several members who

require 3-yr audit they are:

Coxswains: Neil Hennessey, Bob Hersey, Richard Celestino, and Ken Weisberg

Crew members: Dave Bailey, Irene Azzarito, Marie Thompson, Pat Ruggirello, Terrance Day, Jim

Godden, and Ed Colonia

New certifications: Jason Seigler, Steve Kranick, Jim Hunt, Mary Beth CoCo, and Mike Furnald.

The Change of Information form 7028 is going through a change. If you need to change your

information, such as address, email, phone number, etc., please contact Lenny Schwartz FSO/IS, and he

will help you.

This fall, we will schedule our next class, Auxiliary Seamanship (AUXSEA).

In future boat crew classes, you will be required to complete some prerequisites, such as AUXCOM,

AUXPAT and AUXSEA. These thee course cover most of the background on the boat crew program. I

will talk more about this at the Flotilla meeting July 5. If you have questions, please contact me.

On June 8, 12, F36 conducted an Aton Night Patrol covering AOR from Delray

Beach Linton Bridge to Hillsboro inlet. One of the discrepancies noticed was the red day beacon 54 at

Lake Wyman in Boca Raton. Digit 5 was not retroflective at night on both sides. Discrepancy was

reported to USCG unit.

During a hurricane or storm, aids to navigation may be discrepant and mariners should not rely solely on

the position or operation of an aid to navigation. You can consult the Local Notice to Mariners which is

available online at http://navcen.uscg.gov .

We have seen a limited class attendance during 2012 and the June 23, 2012 class turned that trend

around. Hopefully we can keep up this improved attendance for the remainder of the year. The June

23rd

ABS Class has been delivered to the public and we had a total of twenty three students attending! It

was good to see so many students in the classroom again and it appeared that our class was found by

most students by searching the web. The good news did not bring some problems though as we also had

a QE mission and the land tasks needed desks that were also needed by the students, it all worked out

and those kinds of problems are welcomed. Thank you to all of the instructors that helped as it could

not have come off without your help. I offer special thanks to Tom Kegan, Steve Grevemeyer, Tom

Rutherfoord and Andrea Rutherfoord, for their special efforts to make this class a huge success. All

instructors gave an extra effort to help make the class go smoothly even though the QE land tasks lasted

until early afternoon with most staying all day to assist. Andrea even came in early to help set up for the

ABS class while preparing for her QE recertification.

There are several currently certified instructors that need hours to stay current and we only have three

classes remaining this year. You all know who you are and I will be contacting you to help you

schedule the class you want to teach but following are the remaining days for 2012:

Now the other side of the story; the U.S. Coast

Guard's official 2011 Recreational Boating

Statistics were recently released and the total

boating fatalities last year rose to 758, the highest

number on record since 1998. While those

individuals that take a boating safety course are

less likely to be involved in an accident involving a

boat, we are still seeing a significant increase in

boating related accidents and deaths.

The report further states that from 2010 to 2011,

the total reported accidents decreased less than 1 percent from 4,604 to 4,588 and the boating related

deaths increased by 12.8 percent from 672 to 758. Its not just that there are more boats on the water

since the fatality rate measured 6.2 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels, which is a 14.8

percent increase from last year's rate of 5.4 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels. It was

also stated that the total property damage was $52 million. Preventing boating related fatalities and

boating accidents through training and public education are one of our most important missions and as

we see the increases in boating accidents we should solidify our resolve to reach more students in more

varied ways.

And remember to be SAFE out there, it can always get worse!

Here are a few tips on clean boating from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

BOAT CLEANING – IN THE WATER

FACT:

Products used to wash boat hulls and decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates

and ammonia. Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen.

GOAL:

For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to

surface waters.

ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE:

· When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and

properly disposed.

· Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use.

· Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products, including baking soda, vinegar and

lemon juice (see below).

· Ask your marina or marine store to stock biodegradable spray-type cleaners that do not require rinsing.

· Reduce the need for in the water cleaning, use dry slips.

ALTERNATIVES TO TOXIC PRODUCTS

Toxic Alternatives

Detergent & Soap Elbow grease – often

Bleach Hydrogen peroxide

Scouring Powders Baking soda or salt

Floor Cleaner One cup white vinegar in 2 gallons water

Window Cleaner One-cup vinegar in 1-quart warm water, rinse and squeegee

Varnish Cleaner Wipe with 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup water solution

Head Cleaner Put in baking soda and use a brush

Shower Cleaner Wet surface, sprinkle baking soda, rub with scouring cloth

Aluminum Cleaner 2 Tablespoons cream of tartar in 1 quart hot water

Chrome Cleaner/Polish Apple cider vinegar to clean; baby oil to polish

Fiberglass Stain Remover Baking soda paste

Drain Opener Disassemble and replace; do not use toxic substances

Mildew Remover Paste using equal parts of lemon juice and salt

Wood Polish 3 parts olive oil and 1 part white vinegar; almond or

olive oil (interior unvarnished wood only)8

1. Congratulations to the Coast Guard Auxiliary on its 73rd birthday.

Auxiliarists are Semper Paratus - Always Ready and have answered every call

that the Coast Guard has issued. Our Auxiliary shipmates form an invaluable

force multiplier that provides critical resources, skills, and experience,

to senior levels of Coast Guard down to the deck plates.

2. This year, once again, the Auxiliary distinguished itself through

selfless devotion to duty. Its 30,000 members devoted over 4.1 million hours

to conduct Coast Guard activities and operations. They were the vanguard of

recreational boating safety, teaching over 17,000 boating safety classes,

performing more than 145,600 safety checks on boats and fishing vessels, and

visiting over 108,400 marine supply stores to distribute boating safety

information. They helped avoid the loss of hundreds of lives and millions

of dollars in property. The innovative Auxiliary University Program forged

unique ties with college students, providing them with the rewards of

Auxiliary service while garnering their talents in helping meet Coast Guard

research and internship needs. The Auxiliary also launched a comprehensive

overhaul of its special skills inventory. The new Auxiliary Skills Bank,

targeted for field testing in Districts Five, Nine, and Thirteen, will

enable the Coast Guard to instantly identify Auxiliarists with needed skills

on a local or national basis.
