Village Center News As part of the Howard County Zoning Regulaons, Hickory Ridge Community Associaon received a request from Department of Planning and Zoning (DPZ) on October 12 for a Community Response Statement. At the November 20 Board Meeng, the Village Board approved the Community Response Statement and it was submied to DPZ on November 22. The Board has taken the posion that based on our Village Center Community Plan and the community survey done last year, the Board recommends denial of the plan as proposed. DPZ has not officially set a Planning Board hearing date. We ancipate it will be scheduled for early 2018. For more informaon, visit hickoryridgevillage.org or Kimco’s website hickoryridgeredevelopment.com. Toys for Tots We are collecng new, unwrapped toys at The Hawthorn Center to benefit Toys for Tots. This program is sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, who will deliver the toys to needy children in the community. A collecon box will be in our lobby through December 7. The courts would replace the exisng basketball courts in Hawthorn (next to the pool and playground). We are solicing community input from Hickory Ridge residents about the project. Please tell us what you think. Comments may be sent to [email protected]. Exchange Program Interested in traveling to Cergy-Pontoise, France or Tres Cantos, Spain this summer? Students studying French or Spanish, level III or above, have the opportunity through Columbia Associaon’s (CA) Sister Cies program to spend two weeks with a French or Spanish host family, then host a French or Spanish teen for two weeks upon returning home. Informaon sessions will be held at the CA headquarters, located at 6310 Hillside Court on Tue, Dec 5, Thur, Jan 11, and Wed, Jan 17 from 7-8pm. Between bingo games, we invite you to help us make Valenne’s Day cards to be delivered to local clients of Meals on Wheels. All craſt materials will be provided. This will be a fun- filled night for the whole family. Leaf and Yard Waste Please do not blow or rake your leaves and other yard waste into the street, as the county will not remove it and it is against Howard County code. Leaves and yard waste can be recycled on your regular pickup day, but must be placed in paper bags or reusable containers-no plasc bags. For more informaon, visit www.howardcountymd.gov/ yardtrim. Hawthorn School Site The Howard County Planning Board will be reviewing a request on December 14 for an Amended Final Development Plan for the ten-acre Hawthorn Park site which was designated a school site on the Final Development Plan (FDP) dated 1984. The proposed change is essenally a housekeeping amendment to reflect current acreage requirements for paved parking and bus loops. The exisng FDP provides for 1.0 acres of non-credited open space while the current requirement is for 2.5 acres of non-credited open space within the ten-acre parcel. The Board of Educaon has no plans at this me to build a school on the park site. Fesve Fridays Enjoy two fun events in December at the Lakefront Promenade in Downtown Columbia. On Friday, Dec 1, 5-7 pm, the “Craſt Cocktail Crawl” will feature an arsanal cocktail and delicious nibble at each stop and tented pop-up along the Lakefront. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased online through Nov 30 at hps:// www.eventbrite.com/e/fesve-fridays-craſt- cocktail-crawl-ckets-39611398760. On Friday, Dec 8, from 6 to 8 pm, “Family Fun” will feature music, holiday arts and craſts, a photo booth, an ice sculptor, and strolling characters from Frozen and Star Wars. Refreshments include free snacks and hot chocolate. This event is free for the enre family! CA Scholarships Applicaons are now being accepted for the 2018 Maggie J. Brown Spirit of Columbia Scholarship Award. Up to six $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to graduang seniors who exhibit exceponal efforts in providing community service to benefit Columbia residents and those in the Columbia area. The students must live on CA- assessed property or have a parent/guardian who works full-me on or owns CA-assessed property. Applicaons are available at columbiaassociaon.org/scholarship.
