On July 9th we will begin a sermon series entitled “Finding Our Way Home” inspired by the late Henri Nouwen’s book of the same name. He states, “We, like Jesus, are on a journey, living to make our lives abundantly fruitful.” From the moment we are born, we enter onto a path where we experience strength and weakness, accomplishment and failure, life and death. Henri Nouwen shares his deep, and personal thoughts on walking through all that life has to offer while seeking to follow Jesus. He believed that this personal sharing was the surest way to witness to the love of God. He believed that true power was not to be found in domination or

force, but through powerlessness and vulnerability.

Although Henri Nouwen was a very accomplished, educated, and insightful man, he expressed that his life shifted and changed when he moved to L’Arche in Canada where he served severely disabled people. The act of moving into a servant life is one that he frequently referenced as a moment of deep, deep grace.

Our sermon series will begin on July 9th as we talk about Leaving Home, and then follow this with the Path of Power, the Path of Peace, the Path of

Longing, the Path of Living and Dying, and the Path of Grace. I hope you will check this book out as we explore together what it means to walk with Jesus on our way home. -Cyndi Wunder

Message from Pastor Cyndi: My Friends,

We live in contentious times. One of the informal military mottos my ex-husband taught me was, “when con-fronted, deny everything and make counter-accusations!” Sometimes it feels like our world, our media, the life of our country runs along similar lines. This month we have been examining what it means to live as Kingdom People. We are invited to consider living from a different paradigm than our contentious world, to live from a paradigm which is more spacious, more inviting, more hospitable. We are invited to participate in creating a more spacious, inviting, hospitable world by walking the path of Jesus. We are invited to live rooted and grounded in Christ and if we are rooted firmly enough we can stand tall in the middle of the winds that are blowing through our world.

Being rooted and grounded in Christ we can find enough security and stability to respond to contentious times with grace and with love. Being students of Jesus and followers of Jesus’ way we can shine a light on the goodness that is so much more prevalent and pervasive than all that is wrong with the world. Violence may be loud, but love is stronger, more enduring, more prevalent. Listening for God’s Word and searching out where God is active in the world, we are invited to hear and see God at work in the world, to be attentive. There is a certain, where the rubber meets the road, aspect to our spiritual practice when we bring the light of Christ to our daily lives, to our work, to our homes. We are offered the opportunity to dis-engage from all angry, hurtful rhetoric and live from a different place. When we disengage from the continuous reports of violence, tragedy and hateful rhetoric, we do not do it as an act of willful blindness, but so that we might respond intentionally, with grace and love, with a Word that inspires hope and forgiveness. Just last week, as I write this, there was an attack in London that for a few days took over the news. One family, the Archinald family from British Columbia, lost their daughter in that attack. This is how they replied to the violence, “We grieve the loss of our beautiful, loving daughter and sister. She had room in her heart for everyone and believed strongly that every person was to be valued and respected. She would have had no understanding of the callous cruelty that caused her death. Please honor her by making your community a better place. Stand up to hate wherever and whenever you can. Befriend a stranger. Tell them Chrissy sent you.”

We too, are called to respond with love and grace, with community and reconciliation. We are not called to be kingdom people because all that is happening is okay or normal, but in order to live from a different place and invite others to do so also. The love of God is contagious, it spreads like light in a dark room, and we must shine and lean into love, now more than ever.

Peace, Cyndi Wunder

May the Spirit of God surprise you today!

The Lodi Pride Concerts in the Park (LPCP), sponsored by the Lodi/Lake Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce, began in 2014. Six concerts featuring local and area talent were performed in Habermann Park on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. We expanded in 2015 and will continue to have three concerts each summer month this year (skipping the July 4th week) on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Our hope is to provide our community with a musical environment so that adults, children, and families can enjoy a summer evening and gather to meet new and old friends.

Thank You!

Thank you for the quilt you made for me. I like the design and the colors. It was very nice to receive the “comfort quilt” after my recent time in the hospital.

Sincerely,Bill Hughey

Have you stopped by the library, located at the end of the hall from the church office? You will find a wide selection of books on various topics for discussion.

On July 9th we will begin a sermon series entitled “Finding Our Way Home” inspired by the late Henri Nouwen’s book of the same name. For more information, please see the article on the front page of this newsletter!
