President’s Message John Johnson
Dear Friends in Christ, The mission of the Church is and always has
been “Proclamation of the Gospel.” Jesus told
us in Matthew; “Go ye therefore and teach all
nations, baptizing them…. How are you and I
being a part of that proclamation? How do we
go, teach? Attending Church, praying, serving
within our Churches structure, teaching Sun-
day school, inviting neighbors to attend
Church with us, supporting missions at all lev-
els, and joining with our Church community
members in an organization called LLL/LHM
dedicated to “Bringing Christ to the Nations
and the Nations to the Church.” These and
hundreds of others things that could be added
to the list are action items requiring you and I
to look outward, to go and do.
This newsletter has many examples of how
you partnering with your neighbors in the
community of God’s people can better accom-
plish Jesus instructions to you and I. Let’s be
a team; don’t just “let George do it.”

Lutheran Hour Ministries Selects
Next Executive Director St. Louis, MO, August,
7, 2013 — Kurt Buch-
holz of Glen Arm, Mar-
yland, has accepted a
call from the Board of
Directors of the Interna-
tional Lutheran Lay-
men’s League (Int’l
LLL) to become the
next Executive Director
for Lutheran Hour Min-
istries. Buchholz will
join the ministry Aug.
30 and will work along-
side current Executive
Director Bruce Wurde-
man until Wurdeman’s
retirement at the end of the calendar year.
“I have worked closely with the Int’l LLL and Luther-
an Hour Ministries in my previous positions, and I am
excited and honored to be chosen to lead this organiza-
tion at a time when we are faced with so many outreach
challenges and yet provided with so many Spirit-led op-
portunities to reach an increasingly post-Christian cul-
ture,” says Buchholz.
“I have seen firsthand how the ministry, under the
excellent direction provided by Bruce Wurdeman and his
leadership team, serves a unique role as ‘Your Partner in
His Mission’ to boldly proclaim the message of Jesus
Christ to a hurting world,” he continues. “I have also
been blessed to know and work with many of the minis-
try staff over the years and I can assure you that God has
brought together a very gifted group of individuals. It is
truly an honor to be in ministry alongside them!”
Buchholz most recently served as the vice president
for special initiatives and executive director of the Lu-
theran Malaria Initiative for Lutheran World Relief in
Baltimore, Maryland. In this role he led strategic initia-
tives targeted at simultaneous growth in three areas: in-
ternational programs, constituent engagement and inter-
nal management systems. The Lutheran Malaria Initia-
tive is a partnership of LWR and The Lutheran
Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) to mobilize U.S. Lu-
therans in the global effort to eliminate malaria deaths in
Africa by 2015.
From 1993 through 2011, Buchholz served LCMS
World Mission in a variety of leadership positions, in-
cluding interim executive director, where he helped re-
verse a decade-long trend of decreasing revenue and lead
the organization to financial stability. He was instrumen-
tal in leading the rollout of a complex $100 million fund-
raising campaign for LCMS World Mission that ended in 2011.
Buchholz has lived and worked in Taiwan in various
leadership roles, including school start-up and manage-
ment, and he and his wife Jenny served as missionaries
there for seven years. He is a graduate of Concordia Uni-
versity in Irvine, California, in the elementary education pro-
gram and received his Director of Christian Education certifi-
cation and a Master of Arts in organizational management
from Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota.
“We are very pleased that Kurt has accepted the call to be
our next executive director, given his past successes in lead-
ing large scale initiatives and his strong network of partner-
ships with leaders throughout The Lutheran Church—
Missouri Synod,” says Wurdeman. “He brings a wealth of
experience and passion in national and international missions
to this position and we are excited to welcome him to Luther-
an Hour Ministries.”
LLL/LHM Booth at the Kansas State Fair The 100 year celebration of the Kansas State Fair will take
place from September 6th to the 15th in Hutchinson. The
LLL/LHM booth will be located in the southwest corner of
the Meadowlark Building, the same location as previous
years. Please contact Mike Tonn
at [email protected] if you or your congregation or
your zone would be able to help in the booth for a three hour
shift or be able to cover several shifts. The booth is open
from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. You could also contact Mike at 620-
465-3435 Region 3 Ron Bott
This is no surprise to any of you that the Lutheran Laymen’s
League is losing members. But what are we doing about this situa-tion? We may have already given up, or are close to throwing in
the towel. We may see longtime supporters leave. We see others
lukewarm when we talk about the LLL. Sometimes we feel as
though we are the only one left. But do not give up. Do not give
in to all the others.
I can see the competition we are up against—school, sports,
social events, and you know many others. We must not forget
what the Bible says, “Go and teach all nations.” “You shall be my
witness from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth.” “You are the
light for all the world to see.” “We are to love our neighbor as
ourselves.” If we have faith, if we enjoy the gift of forgiveness of
sins, if we are confident of our Salvation let’s be fair with our
neighbors, friends, co-workers and even those we will never see
and share these important things that we cling to.
“OK wise guy” you might say, “Show me.” Let me tell you
when it comes to the internet and that stuff I am just plain
dumb. But I can find the Daily Devotions, mostly by former
speaker Reverend Ken Klaus, which is a good start. There are
activities and programs available for all ages, from individuals to
groups. So find a Bible Study group and share some Lutheran Hour Ministries material with them. They may be cold to your ideas but
give the Holy Spirit time. Give them time to think. Put an article
in your church bulletin, enroll someone in the Daily Devotions on
the internet, and invite someone to Bible Study. What a BOLD
move. The opportunities are endless, but we MUST do these
things.
Just like the other events in our lives, pray, pray, pray. Make
some notes and make some plans. Maybe practice with your
spouse or friend. Take a friend along. These are just ideas. Come
up with your own.
Just remember our mission statement “Bringing Christ to the
Nations and the Nations to the Church.” The Lutheran Laymen’s
League with Lutheran Hour Ministries is about EVANGE-
LISM. This is the number 1 purpose God placed us here today and
in days to come.

Mission U The Kansas District LLL made a commitment to
fund one MISSION U workshop in each of the five
LLL regions, they are still to be accomplished. If
your congregation would like to host a workshop
contact your Region Representative; Region 1 Rich-
ard Schrum, Region 2 Don Copley, Region 3 Ron
Bott, Region 4 Chris Erickson, Region 5 Arlen
Schultz. As host your Church would provide the
meeting space, lunch, publicity to your circuit and
registration; charging a fee to recover your lunch and
incidental expenses.
The available courses can be viewed by clicking
on Mission U above or go to http://
www.whatsmissionu.com/courses.asp. This being an
area wide event we would like intense publicity with
a goal of fifty or more at each event. Kansas District
LLL will provide funding, scheduling assistance, and
publicity. Kansas LCMS, Rev. Frith, is supportive
with advice, encouragement and publicity. Team
work! Partnerships!
Several Mission U workshops are conducted each
year in Kansas; invite, encourage, and bring God’s
people in your sphere of influence to a workshop to
improve our sharing, and proclamation of the Gos-
pel. The most recent workshop was MU101 hosted
by Trinity, Atwood.

Kansas District Project 2012-13 The contributions to the 2012-13 Kansas District LLL
Project with a goal of $33,000 was only about $30,000.
This is a $7,000 drop from our 2009-10 District Project
when we received over $37,000 in contributions. With
about $3,000 of carryover funds from the closing out the
Endowment Fund last year, we are able to fund the
$33,000 goal. The first half of the $26,000 budgeted for
financial aid for students studying for full time church
work has been distributed.
The Kansas District Board of Governors at their Au-
gust meeting proposed to keep the 2013-14 Kansas Dis-
trict LLL Project budget goal at $33,000. All of the En-
dowment Funds have been expended. In order to meet
the $33,000 goal we need to encourage more contribu-
tions from our fellowship groups, congregations and
members. Most of our District Project funds are raised
from pancake feeds and soup supper events and special
door offerings. The proposed $33,000 2013-14 Kansas
District LLL Project budget to be presented to the Kansas
LLL District convention in November will include: Fi-
nancial Aid for students studying for full time church
A recent Mission U, MU203 “Sharing the Gospel in a
Digital Age” was presented by Rev. Dr. Lee Hagan, Sen-
ior Pastor at St. Paul’s Concordia, Mo., and was hosted by
Bethany, Overland Park.
