Besides supporting many International, National & District V5 Projects, this Club has been very active within our own Community.” During the past year the Moorabbin Lions Club had disbursed a total of $73,235 to local and international humanitarian projects. David recognized several members who have given enormous support to the club. “Geoff Thomas stepped down this year as the Chair of the Golf Day Committee – Geoff s contribution as Chair has been outstanding, and has he moved the Golf Day project to another level, as the primary fundraising project of the Moorabbin Lions Club.” David said that Geoff had agreed to continue as a member of the Golf Committee. He thanked the Directors for their work during this term. “We moved to having monthly meetings, which increased the time they needed to devote to the workings of the club.” “Cerise de Gelder, as Membership Chair, is another member who has given sterling service. Cerise has increased the membership by three new members and already has a new applicant for induction at the first meeting of the year. Gillian Lelah, as Secretary, is another member who deserves special recognition. Gillian has been secretary for several years and has carried out her duties in a manner that makes being President a joy,” David said. He said Marilyn Lissenburg was, as always dynamic, a great support to all members, and an entertaining Tail Twister. “John Lissenburg, as Treasurer, also deserves special recognition. John is always available to assist in any projects the club becomes involved in.” “Thanks to Jessie Brent we have had many very good Guest Speakers, and has been able to assist, as will be shown in the annual disbursements.” He said that a special night in the year saw the clubs newsletter editors Sam and June Dalley being awarded the Melvin Jones Award. David sincerely thanked Jack Hellyer for offering to take on the role of President in 2016-2017. “”This will be Jack's fourth term serving as President of Moorabbin Lions, and I wish him all the very best during the year ahead.” Among the clubs achievements was the completion of the first stage of the Moorabbin Primary School's environmental project. “This is a three-stage project and the funds have already been provided to do the next stage.” The Club is investigating involvement in supporting women and children who've suffered Domestic Violence. Delivering his annual report to members at Moorabbin LionsChangeover Dinner, retiring President David Blyth said histerm had been an exciting year. “The Lions Club has a strongreputation within this community and beyond. AN EXCITING YEAR FOR MOORABBIN LIONS Cont..IPDG Ann Eldridge officiated at the installation of President Jack Hellyer andhis Board of Directors for 2016-17, and later inducted Moorabbin Lionsnewest member Robyn Grimshaw.

(Robyn is looking forward to being involved with the Club when she's notaway on her frequent travels! She worked alongside Lion Di Fensham atBayside Council in Aged and Disability Services. Now retired, Robyn doesvoluntary work with 'Wesley Do Care' and walks dogs for people. She lovesall animals, and looks after grandchildren too.)

Pres. Jack Hellyer thanked those who had come along, and the members forsupporting his fourth term as president. “Our plans this year are to grow theclub, to enjoy each others company and have a great year ahead.”

Leo Tyquin Award The Award is named in honour of Past International Director LeoTyquin who was a conscientious Lions member giving unlimited support to the

Victorian Lions Foundation. Past International Director Leo Francis Tyquin was bornin Werribee on 9th June 1924 and passed away 10th September 2001. He joined Lionsas a member of Mordialloc-Mentone in 1968 and held the offices of Club President,Zone Chairman and District Governor. He served as Multiple District CouncilChairman and International Director in 1984-86. He was a keynote speaker at the 10thand 15th Charter Anniversary of Lionism in Indonesia and at Conventions in England,Wales, India, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Cont... Page 3

NATIONAL TREE DAYNATIONAL TREE DAY

Over 100 people, including Moorabbin Lions, many children accompaniedby their parents, or cub or scout leaders, attended the National Tree Dayplanting at Karkarook Park. For a winter's day, the weather was perfect,sunny and mild.

Head Ranger Des Lucas thanked everyone for attending and announcedthat 2,300 trees, shrubs & grasses had been planted, a tremendous effort byall. Afterwards, all enjoyed the BBQ prepared by Clarinda Lions

Thank you to the seven Moorabbin Lions: Di Fensham (who brought thelollies – much enjoyed by John Lissenburg see below and others); Cerisede Gelder; Charlie Smith; Billy Tomkinson, Marilyn Lissenburg, JohnLissenburg & Gillian Lelah who assisted with planting and supervising thechildren's plantings.

Thanks also to Lion Craig Walker who assisted Clarinda Lions inpreparing the delicious BBQ.

The location of the planting was in the north western area of the park,which was a bare area which had been prepared in advance with mulch.

The South Eastern Centre Against SexualAssault (SECASA) provides sexual assault and familyviolence services in Victoria within the MorningtonPeninsula, Frankston, Bayside, Port Phillip, Stonnington,Glen Eira and Kingston local government areas. They alsowork in the Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardiniagrowth corridor.

SECASA provides services to children and adults, bothfemale and male, who have been sexually or physicallyassaulted.

Leo Tyquin Award Cont...

Leo was passionate about the Lion’s Village at Licola as hewas one of the early pioneers of the conversion to a children’sand general purpose camp.

Leo’s pride was the Lion’s Eye Bank, an integral part ofVictorian Eye and Ear Hospital’s facilities. He remindedpeople constantly that the Eye Bank was an initiative of hisown Mordialloc-Mentone Club-being personally instrumentalin its establishment in 1983.

Leo Tyquin was a man who only saw good in people, andwho tried to do good for people. Leo will always beremembered for being a truly fine person and also for theexcellent and tireless work he did for so many.

He received many awards including the InternationalLeadership Award, the Association’s Ambassador ofGoodwill Award, the highest honour given by the Associationto a member. He was a Life Member, a Melvin Jones Fellow,a Life Member of the Lloyd Morgan Trust in New Zealandand No 1 Governor of the Victorian Lions Foundation. TheVLF supportS the development of Health and WelfareProgrammes for the benefit of the population within the fiveLions Club Districts encompassing Victoria and SouthernNew South Wales, and to support medical research to improvehealth throughout the world.

Ronald McDonald House Monash works to enhance thequality of life for families with sick children by providing ahome-away-from-home that is welcoming, caring andsupportive.

Each family who stays at the House has their own uniquestory, but all have a place to rest and recover so they canface their challenges. It offers families a shoulder to lean onyet privacy when they need it. Families have safety, comfortand peace of mind.

Since opening in 1993 Ronald McDonald House Monashhas helped over 10,000 families who have needed to travelto care for their sick child at Monash Children’s Hospital.

Located in Clayton on the hospital grounds, the House isjust a few minutes walk from the hospital wards.

Ronald McDonald House is open 24 hours a day, 7 days aweek, 365 days a year and can accommodate 15 familieseach and every night.
