For the church, our “vacation” means welcoming 400 children to Linworth for our awesome Vacation Bible School! While our idea of “vacation” might not be a warm, sandy beach, it is enjoyable and meaningful to see young kids grow in Christ before our very eyes. This time of year reminds me of my youth, my summer vacations, and my VBS experiences. It also reminds me of the times more recently in my life of ministry when I’ve been able to take part in Vacation Bible School weeks and see one of the most precious sights there is in ministry— young persons expressing faith in God and joy in Christ. So often in our culture we think the word “childlike” describes someone as acting inappropriately, or “not acting their age.” However, like he does most of the time, Jesus flips the script on our preconceived notions and understandings. Jesus says that we must act like little children in order to come to him and enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus did this to prove a point to his disciples. At the beginning of Matthew 18, the disciples argue over who the greatest truly is. Jesus tells them that it’s not about their accomplishments or their worldly greatness, it’s about their faith. In order to gain what they truly aspire, they must first lower themselves to a “childlike” faith. But they must do more than that; they must welcome children in the name of Jesus. What is it about the faith of a child and a child’s relationship with Jesus that is so special? Maybe it’s the awe over Jesus as the Son of God. Maybe it’s the willingness to approach him with no strings attached. Maybe it’s the sense of joy and enthusiasm. Whatever it is, I pray that we may all go to that place where we can be like little children and come closer to Jesus in our walks of faith. - Rev. Matt Yoder Associate Pastor

when I’ve been able to take part in Vacation Bible School weeks and see one of the most precious sights there is in ministry—young persons expressing faith in God and joy in Christ. So often in our culture we think the word “childlike” describes someone as acting inappropriately, or “not acting their age.” However, like he does most of the time, Jesus flips the script on our preconceived notions and understandings. Laos Linworth is making a difference in the daily lives of people in Laos!!

New Stairs under Construction During our mission trip to the Odomxia village in January, we talked with village officials about a 50/50 partnership to build stairs. They said they could raise $1100 for construction materials and labor and asked us for a donation of $1400. We provided the funds. In May, our two community development leaders from the Lao Methodist Church went to Odomxai to meet with village officials. The leaders conveyed the fund personally and talked with Pastor and village leaders. By the end of May, provincial church representatives to our council meeting said that they had bought the materials and had already started construction. We are awaiting the completion and its celebration. We also provided $250 to complete a sign in front of the village elementary school. Wells Bring Water to Thirsty Villages Funding from Linworth helped five villages get fresh water. Last year, when Linworth raised funds for wells for Laos, the Lao Methodist Church Men’s group for water resources was formed. This group was established to determine and prioritize water needs in the villages. They also oversee construction. This group has identified the first five projects. Three wells were dug, one water tank to capture mountain water was built, and one electric water pump was provided to bring water up from a stream. These projects are located in two provinces, Bolikhamxai and Luang Prabang, and serve five communities. Each water resource serves from five to 25 families in each village.

Ever Thought About Becoming a Stephen Minister? Linworth United Methodist Church will be training a new class of Stephen Ministers beginning in late August. Stephen Ministers work alongside our pastors to care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support to people who are going through a difficult time. These challenging situations may include but are not limited to: divorce, grief, hospitalization, unemployment, terminal illness, chronic illness, relocation, and loneliness. If you have gifts for caring, listening, and encouraging others, please begin to prayerfully consider becoming a part of this meaningful ministry. If you think you might be interested in becoming a Stephen Minister, contact one of the leaders: Pam Boh, Larry Less, Cindy Thornton, or Pastor Gene Folden.

Thanks again, Helen Becker.” “Thank you to the wonderful Office Volunteer Team, who turned their ‘Thank You’ party into a send-off for me. This group of servants is selfless in the time and work that they dedicate to the Office Volunteer Ministry. The church office could not function as smoothly without your help.
