It is hard to believe we have been open one year. These months have gone by so fast.

Eastlink staff are thrilled to have hosted the Parking Lot party in August. The outdoor ZUMBA class was a huge hit and everyone was inspired to have Mayor Given take part in the class. The Centre was buzzing all day with the 3 on 3 Basketball tournament, as well as, the Community Connections Event. Not to overshadow the 108 extra parking stalls we now have at the Fieldhouse entrance.

The Eastlink Centre is still busy. We have surpassed the 5000 member mark and on top of that have sold 4700 punch passes. We are also unveiling our new Membership Renewal Benefits Program, to reward our dedicated members.

In the pool area, we have been offering new Tailored Aquatic Programs (TAP) and they now include small group sessions. We are running Flow Rider lessons for beginner and advanced riders. Our Child & Youth area is extremely busy! We have finished construction on a new program classroom. It will be mainly used to run Child & Youth programs. In the Fieldhouse

area, we have added Wheelchair Basketball to our schedule as well as Ultimate Frisbee.

As our first year anniversary passes, I can’t help but reflect on the amazing moments when the many children saw the dinosaurs for the first time and the look of wonder on their faces. As well as, when users tried out the FlowRider for the first time and we had the pleasure of experiencing their excite-ment as they landed their first trick. This year has been filled with such excitement and happiness for the community and the Eastlink staff. There have been times that we have had to learn from and deal with obstacles such as the deficiencies that come with any new facility. But the won-derful moments far outweigh the trying times. This year has been a success only because of the dedication and patience from our community.

To Whom It May Concern:

The class for women over 60

years is one that I thoroughly

enjoy. Sherry has shown me how to exercise wit

hout pain or

discomfort. Yet, I have lost

a few inches but not too

many pounds but I have a lot more muscle. Sh

e makes the

class interesting, fun, and entirely enjoyable. Th

e other

ladies seem to be en

joying the class too. It makes my

Tuesdays & Thursdays something to look forward t

o.

Thank you Sherry.

Sincerely,

Winnifred Anderson

One thing I forgot to mention - I used my walker t

o walk

the track but after a month of exercise

classes I tried

the walk without my walker a

nd did very well. I

stood

more erect and walked

swinging my arms and enjoyed the

freedom that provided. I really believe

the classes are

beneficial in many ways I haven’t discovered yet.

parkingSouth end parking lot to the Fieldhouse entrance is now open! Please feel free to use the Fieldhouse reception for all your administrative needs.

Here are some other parking options:¹ Main west entrance

¹ Angled parking is located all along the north end of the building Coca Cola Centre parking lot. You can access the Eastlink Centre through the Coca Cola Centre. lost and found Have you ever been looking for some-thing you have misplaced and thought that you had looked everywhere but just could not find it? Had you thought about looking at the Eastlink Centre?

With the amazing support the commu-nity has shown for the Eastlink Centre, the facility has become busier than ever. When closing time arrives, many items are left behind.

The Eastlink Centre has an incredible collection of our customer’s personal

belongings. We would love more than anything to match owners with mis-placed items.

We do have an expiry date for our found item collection as the amount of items we collect is too overwhelming to handle. We hold all items for a minimum of three weeks and then once a month we donate all unclaimed items to local charities. We donate items in support of the Rotary House, Odessey House, Sunrise House and the SPCA to name a few. They really appreciate the dona-tions and are glad to have them.

Our greatest wish would be that we can locate every item our customers have lost and also match every item we col-lect with the original owner. So next time you visit the Eastlink Centre and leave with less than you came with, please come see us and we will do our best to reunite owners with their belongings. Just when you thought your personal belongings were gone forever… we may be able to help.

what’s happening

Skate Park Opening

What an absolute blast! Thank-you to the over 1200 people that came to our Parking Lot Party and especially to the 400+ participants in the Outdoor ZUMBA class.

We had a free bbq for the entire community, bouncy castles and face painting for the kids. And of course the ZUMBA class for everyone.

Parking Lot Party

The Skate Park officially opened on August 15, 2012.

With a Huge Party!!

We had over 300 skaters, BMXer and scooter ridres participate in the event.

Thank you to all the board shops in town for their contribution to the event. We had S3, FourWord, Dark Flavour and Ernie’s. The park creator New Line Skate Parks marketing cooridantor Zev Klymochko made a trip down for the event.

The park is now closed for the season, but watch for the New Season Opening Party in the Spring.

The first annual Eastlink Center 3 on 3 basketball tournament was held the weekend of August 25 & 26 to coincide with the parking lot party.

We would like to thank Quiznos for being the tournament sponsor. The tournament had 11 teams split into 3 divisions, men’s, ladies and U 15.

It was a great weekend of basketball and everyone had a great time. Based on the positive feedback from participants and moving the date to earlier in the year we expect the 2013 tournament to be bigger and better.

Ghostly HauntHad hundreds of tweens gather at the Eastlink Centre for a killer Halloween Party/Dance

If you missed it this year, watch for it Halloween 2013!

Over 65 Drop-In Fitness Classes a Week!!

Garfield WilsonAfter a diverse career in music and film, Garfield Wilson found his true calling when he established his Vancouver-based personal training business, Forward Fitness Inc., in 2004. When Garfield felt it was time to move away from the entertainment industry, he discovered that personal training was a conduit to marry his two passions: fitness and connecting with others.

Garfield’s vivacious energy, determination and passion has drawn significant attention to his work. In 2010, Garfield was sought out by Chip Wilson himself to become a Lululemon ambassador for their flagship 4th Avenue store. Garfield was also asked to star in the ground-breaking CBC docu-series, Village on a Diet; this 10-week series

chronicled the community of Taylor, BC in a turbulent 3-month journey of weight-loss, life-style change, and self-discovery. In the winter of 2011, Garfield was invited to co-host CBC’s Canada-wide promotional tour for CBC Live and to promote its national Live Right Now Campaign.

Garfield now works with his team of trainers and health care partners to build a support-ive health and wellness community – both locally and nationally.

Meet the familiar faces around the

If you are a regular around the Eastlink Centre you start to get to know folks who work here, so we wanted to share a few familiar faces with you so next time you say Hi, you will know who they are!

Yo, My name is Lauren Kemp and I have been with the City for 4 years. I started off with the City at the Kid’s Place Playschool for my first practicum placement in 2008 for Early Childhood Development. The City has provided with me with so many opportunities such as Summer Camp Leader, School Programmer, Summer Coordinator and more. In 2011 I had the opportunity to apply at the Eastlink Centre to work for Child and Youth Services and as a Coordinator I continue to learn something new every day, I absolutely love working for the City it is like a whole new family that I have gained. When I’m not working I enjoy relaxing with friends, shopping and yoga!

Lynn BoydAdministration Manager

Hi there, I’m Lynn Boyd. I moved to Grande Prairie from Toronto at a very young age and graduated from GPCH in 1975. I’ve been married for 33 years with 3 children and 3 granddaughters.

couple years I worked in the concession for a year or so before taking a full time role as

secondment as Fitness and Admin Supervisor I was offered the Admin Coordina-tor job on a permanent basis. Then I was promoted to Administration Supervisor which I stayed in till we moved over to the Eastlink Centre where I now manage over 30 staff.

Over the years I have made many long lasting friendships, including some that I now think of as my work family. Although the size of our family has grown over the years it still remains a source of support I can rely on.

Hi I’m Gloria the Fitness Supervisor. I’ve been with the City for over 10 years. I moved to GP many years ago from NB. I’m married and have two aweswome children and I love spending time with family and friends. Of course, my biggest passion is fitness and I like to travel too.

The Leisure Centre was where we went to exercise many years ago when we all wore leg warmers!! I’m sure there are a few ladies that know what I’m talking about! TLC was like family to me and now Eastlink Centre has the same feeling. What I love about working at Eastlink Centre is not only the

classes, its just like spending time with family!
