Prayer with the Elders Our elders welcome the opportunity to pray with any in our church family whenever the need arises. Contact the church office and you’ll be contacted to set up a time. In addition, our elders dedicate their first monthly meeting as a time to pray with or pray for and anoint those who want to come without an appointment. The next elder prayer night is Monday, May 11 from 7-8 in room D1b.

Young at Heart May 5 – The Young at Heart are sponsoring an Appreciation Lunch for the teachers at Monroe School in Davenport. We are providing the meat but need side dishes of vegetables, salads or dessert. Please sign up at at the Info Center if you can help furnish some food. If you cannot help serve, just bring the food to the church by 9 a.m. on May 5 and we will take it there for you. We did this last year and the teachers are still talking about how great it was.

May 8 - The Young at Heart will gather at the church on May 8 at 6 p.m. to go on an African Safari. We will have a potluck meal (drinks and dessert will be furnished). Do some reading about African animals because after we eat, we are going to have a fun time naming animals and their sounds and other fun activities. Bring a friend.

May 28 – The Young at Heart Breakfast Club will meet at Mikey’s Cafe in Pleasant Valley on at 8 a.m. Everyone is invited. We have a great time of fellowship.

Stewardship Corner

Trust is an integral part of effective Christian stewardship. Trusting God to meet our daily needs may be one of the most challenging habits to develop.

For far too many of us, it is easier to trust God for our salvation than to trust Him for managing our day-to-day issues. When it comes to practical things like putting food on the table or making a mortgage or rent payment, we are on our own. As a result, we often experience anxiety and worry.

Fear is the result of not trusting our Father for each and every aspect of our lives. We occasionally worry about loss of job, loss of health, and a host of financial possibilities. With practice and prayer, fear will surrender to trusting God for both our day-to-day financial concerns as well as our eternal salvation.

As Christians, we know the accumulation of material things will not satisfy us. I Timothy 6:17 says to “Instruct those who are rich in this present world not…to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.”

MISSIONS NEWS

Spotlight on Missions – Deaf Missions, Council Bluffs, IA

Deaf Missions is very, very thankful for Bettendorf Christian Church! You have blessed us tremendously with your many, many prayers, your diligent volunteer service and your faithful and generous financial support through the years! Thank you so very much for being a blessing to deaf people worldwide. Because of your prayers,

service and dollars, Deaf Missions continues…

…translating the Bible into American Sign Language so that deaf people may have the Word of God in their native, preferred language. We have completed translation of the New Testament and some books in the Old Testament. Recently we finished and are now distributing the Psalms! This year we are working on the books of Job, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Our goal is to finish the entire Old Testament by 2020!

…publishing and mailing about 25,000 Daily Devotions for the Deaf every four months to more than 100 countries. Many others watch these devotions in sign language and read them in simple English on our website, too. For some deaf people in third world countries where Bibles are scarce, the devotional booklets practically serve as “Bibles” for them to preach sermons on Sunday mornings and to teach lessons for weekly Bible study groups.

…producing Big Bible Stories in American Sign Language videos for deaf children and their families and friends. We have completed five episodes – Abraham, Gideon, Ruth, Elijah and Jonah. The purpose for this ministry is to provide resources for parents and teachers to teach the foundation of God’s plan of salvation in the Old Testament to deaf children and youth.

…training people in the Deaf Missions Training Center (DMTC). This unique two-year program, established in 2011, is training and equipping people to become translators and missionaries to reach deaf people throughout the world with the Gospel of Jesus.

…conducting international short-term missions trips to different countries. Teams have reached out to deaf people in Kenya, Haiti, Moldova, Colombia and other countries.

For more information about Deaf Missions, visit www.deafmissions.com or call us at (712) 587-8887 (video phone) or (712) 322-5493 (voice). Once again, thank you very much!

ELDER’S MEETING NOTESThese notes reflect meetings held April 6 through April 20, 2015.

Interim Goal Reviews completed – Elders have completed interim reviews of all minister and staff goals set last October. Progress towards these goals is being made in all areas, and events, initiatives and plans are well underway towards achieving this year’s ambitions. Please continue to pray for our staffs’ efforts to continuously improve BCC’s Connect, Serve and Grow objectives.

Invitation Response Team – Elders heard a proposal from Tyler Curtis and Shawna Smay to form an Invitation Response Team to better recognize, encourage and respond to those in need of prayer and encouragement. This team will consist of trained volunteers who will be available to pray with worship service attendees during the invitation time and after services. This team will look to pray, encourage, and connect individuals and will also follow up on needs during the week. The volunteers will be diverse, including couples, in an effort to be easily approachable for those wanting prayer. The elders approve this ministry and are excited to see the fruit it will bear.

Service Dog Policy – Elders clarified BCC’s policy towards service dogs in the building. We do welcome both certified service dogs and service dogs in training at all times, including weekend worship services.

Summer Calendar – Elders were able to review staff proposals to take place this summer, including, administrative assistant changes and plans for an All-church family-oriented event in one service on August 30. Additional details are forthcoming.

The deadline for June’s edition of The Link is May 19. Submit articles to [email protected].
