Every year, the eighth graders of Lincoln Magnet School spend almost half the year working on one big project. You may be wondering what it is, but chances are you have already heard about. Illinois History Day is a statewide program, where students from grades 6-12 create and submit an exhibit, essay, documentary, original performance, or website. The topic has to do with Illinois history. Once you’re done with the final draft of your essay, you’ll have to decide if you want to submit your essay or make an exhibit, documentary, original performance, or website. If you choose the essay you’ll have to correct anything you or your teachers think you should, the essay needs to be perfect.

Most people only think about the present and maybe the future, but they rarely look back on the history of certain moments in time. We all know about WWII and the Pilgrims, but sometimes history is where we don’t expect it. Today, March 28th, we will take a journey back 1,174 years. The date is March 28th, the year 845. A fleet of 5,000 Danish Vikings, led by Ragnar Lodbrok, have successfully invaded and taken control of Paris. They held Paris for ransom and eventually were paid 7,000 French livres of gold and silver. Even though the Vikings got hit hard by the plague, they managed to sail back home with the bounty. ˝Skipping forward 711 years to the year 1556, we can see that Philip II was crowned king of Spain on the 28th of March. During the reign of Philip II, Spain reached the height of its power and influence. Philip II was in charge of the Netherlands, Naples, and Milan even before he was King of Spain. Philip II also became the King of England and Ireland, before he died of cancer. The expression “the empire which the sun never sets” was giving to Spain during this time based on their massive control over Asia, America, and Europe.

Should you decide to submit something other than your essay, there are some very strict guidelines to follow. For the display board, you’ll need to narrow your essay down to 500 words to put on your exhibit. You will also want to add as much as you can to try and differentiate yourself from the rest of the boards. For the website, you will also have to narrow your essay to 500 words. You will also want to include pictures and other kinds of media on your website, but be careful because you cannot include more than four minutes of media. Finally, if you want to make a documentary, really your only constraints are that you have to make it, you can include someone else’s work/voice, and it can only be four minutes.

This year, LMS did very well in the competition. In the category of essays, Emily B, Ethan H, Hannah P, Lauren W, Luke H, Mackanzie H, Maddie K, Mariah G, Mia B, Sadie B, and Trista P received a superior award and are moving on to state. For the display boards, Jackson B Jake B, Josue R, Levi S, Jamya F, Kaylee N, Nika T, Kayla R, Kyli R, Lilian F, Megan B, Olivia G, Harvey H, Sidney M, Taree C, and Keon R received a superior award and are moving on to state. For the category of websites, Amiyah G, Makenna H, Eleanor S, Josie H, Kendall L, Marek M, and Ryan H are moving onto state. And finally, for the category of documentary, Chase H, Cooper B, Griffin B, and Jesse B are advancing onto state.˝

The Trip of a Lifetime (Continued)The Leaning Tower of Piza is also another spot in Italy you should see and maybe even

walk up. Cinque Terre is an outstanding town also located in Italy. Cinque Terre is apart of a strip of five towns only miles away from each other. Each town is on the side of a mountain and the travelers can hike on trails to get from town to town. There are gorgeous views from all angles in every town. Lastly, Venice, known as The City of Canals, is a spectacular location to take in. The fact that a whole city is based just above water in fascinating. Overall, if you ever take a trip to Italy, you will witness places and events you will never be able to see in the United States.˝

Vikings, Spaceships, and

New Countries: The History

of March 28th (Continued)

If we jump forward to the year 1920, we will notice big things happening in the new country of Czechoslovakia. Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk was a Czech philosopher and politician. When Czechoslovakia was still attached to the Astrio-Hungarian Empire. Masaryk first focused on reforming the Astrio-Hungarian Monarchy into a democratic federal state. But During WWI he was in favor of Czech Independence. With the help of the Allies, Austria-Hungary collapsed and Czechoslovakia was formed. Masaryk was elected the first president of Czechoslovakia and was re-elected for a second and third term. He is known as the Father of Czechoslovakia.˝

If we go forward again to 1935, we can notice a huge development in aerospace technology. Robert H. Goddard is known as the founding father of modern rocketry for many reasons. He invented the first liquid fuel rocket in 1914, his liquid fuel rocket made a successful flight, he patented the first rocket-powered aircraft design, and on March 28th he successfully controlled a rocket with gyroscopes. ˝

As you can see, there is a lot of history out there you probably haven’t heard about before.˝

Taking care of yourself is an absolute must! While we may all have different ways to treat ourselves, we all need little tips sometimes. Kick start your beauty routine with these helpful tips you can do on your own to make you look and feel better. ˝ Taking your makeup off at night needs to be a priority in your beauty routine. It is so important to let your skin breathe overnight so it can get rid of those dead skin cells. A good tip Kayla Rickman says you should do is to leave makeup wipes by your bed so you’ll never forget to take it off before catching some zzz’s. ˝

Another tip that needs to play a role in your routine is a moisturizer. To all of the oily-skin people out there, chances are you are afraid to apply moisturizer because it may add even more oil to your skin but that is not the case. Without moisturizer, your skin naturally becomes oilier to compensate for the moisture it's not getting, causing even more oil. Moisturizers are everywhere, so make sure you are getting a legitimate moisturizer that is on the expensive side.˝

Numerous foods are getting major hype right now! Many new trends are healthy such as smoothie bowls, while other trends aren’t as healthy, but are still very delicious. Tasty treats such as rolled ice cream, matcha infused everything, and Boba tea are all the rage!˝

Smoothie bowls are a new twist on a healthy basic; you put a smoothie in a bowl and top it with items like fruit and seeds. Berries, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and chia are among the most popular. Another healthy trend came as people were introduced to Matcha when Starbucks released their Matcha Frappuccino. Matcha is a super-concentrated green tea powder that is packed with vitamins, minerals and is an antioxidant! Since then, people have loved to make many basic foods, green and tasteful. ˝

Other delicacies such as rolled ice cream and Boba tea are can only be found in very fancy restaurants and cafes, but now Springfield has one on its way to North Dirksen Parkway. You may be asking, “what is rolled ice cream, and where can you get?” Rolled ice cream is made by adding cream to a frozen plate, adding flavorings and toppings to that, and using special tools to roll it into a new favorite sweet treat. Boba is a milk and tea drink with tapioca balls that are usually colored black and have different flavorings. Boba tea is actually already available in Springfield at the Village Tea Room or at Gloria Jeans Coffee Shop.˝

So no matter what your taste buds are telling you they want, there’s a trendy treat waiting for you!˝

The Pink Drink, also known as the Pinkity Drinkity, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Iced Lattes, and Cold Brews are all staples at the award-winning coffee shop Starbucks. You may recognize Starbucks by their green straws, these straws are hurting the environment by getting into the ocean, but some of you reading are probably thinking, “but we don’t live near an ocean!” You are right, but straws are hard to decompose and can get into the water systems, thus causing the straws to get into the ocean. ˝ While interviewing people about how they feel about the green plastic straws, almost everyone said they would feel weird without the iconic green straw. When asked if people would prefer a metal straw instead of a plastic one, they all said no. “Drinking out of a metal straw makes your mouth taste like metal and its not very pleasing. I would rather have plastic straws rather than a metal one,” says Mrs. Pennington. What do you think that Starbucks should do?˝

Tricky Triangle Dance

The latest viral dance craze taking over social media is the Triangle Dance. It’s a trending hashtag all over Snapchat, Instagram and YouTube. This viral dance craze was created on TIKTOK by Matthew Jones, who posted a video of the dance on February 1. The viral dance involves three participants who must stay focused as they jump in unison while their hands are set on each other’s shoulders in a triangle formation. After that, each person takes a turn and jumps into the space between the other two participants in the triangle. Rhythm, patience and timing are key in this new fad. This synchronized dance has had professional dancers, co-workers, and school kids all over the nation trying it!

Written by Sydni R Some super easy things you can do at home are face masks. Face masks are loved by everyone! Who doesn’t love a good mask to reinvigorate your skin. A recommended, easy, DIY face mask from Sydni R is a raw honey mask. Raw honey is naturally antibacterial and a super quick way to get soft, beautiful skin. About once a week, use a tablespoon or so of raw honey and gently warm it by rubbing your fingertips together. Spread it on to your face. Leave it on for 5 – 10 minutes and then use warm water to gently rinse it off and pat dry. It leaves your face looking very glowy. Lily F and Mykaila G say that some good ways you can treat yourself at home are doing your nails, doing a nice face mask, working out, eating a good breakfast in the morning, taking long showers, or listening to your favorite music. Try them out, tell your friends, maybe help a friend, but as Lily says, “Do not rely on any products to help you feel better, only you can do that.” Stay gorgeous! ˝

Harlem RenaissanceTake the A-Train for HarlemWritten by Emily B

The Harlem Renaissance was an eruption of African American music, writing, art, and much more during the 1920s in Harlem, New York. It was known as the “New Negro Movement” and was considered a rebirth of African American arts. This was a huge revolution in black culture considering most blacks lived in the South at the time. However, the North was a place for success and opportunity, which sparked the Great Migration. Harlem was freedom; Harlem was possibility; Harlem was heaven. Here at LMS, a Harlem Renaissance production is put on every year by eighth-grade students. In fact, preparation is almost in full swing for the performance. Thanks to Grace Nanavati, all of Lincoln’s eighth graders are learning dances from the Harlem Renaissance time period, as well as knowledge about the Harlem Renaissance. Eighth grade U.S. history teacher, Mrs. Mitts, said,“(This) teaches students about the time period and is an engaging way for our students to have physical interaction with their curriculum.” The production is on April 29, 2019, in the SHS Auditorium at 7:00 and will include various dances, songs, and poems from the Harlem Renaissance era. The event is free and open to the public - though seating is limited.˝

The new Harlem groove has started! The first class of jammin’ students started dancing during sixth hour on March 7th. Mrs. Grace Nanavati is helping out by teaching all of the new dance moves. Although most 8th graders are not very pleased about how much contact there has to be with their partner, they are finding it more fun than they expected. While Annabel K. she said that she wasn’t fond of the Harlem dance, Luke H. rated dancing for the Harlem Renaissance a “seven out of ten in enjoyment,” stating that, “it was a fun alternative to PE.” ˝

This year’s performance includes four dances by students including one to “Jazz Me Blues.” The partner dances have become a tradition at the LMS Harlem Renaissance shows and this year is no different!˝

Teacher SpotlightA Teacher Loved by AllWritten By Maddie K

Mrs. Jones is an 8th-grade writing, literature,

and AVID teacher here at LMS. Mrs. Jones’ past

students will always remember her for her free-

spirited and fun teaching style. Mrs. Jones loves the

environment at our school: the teachers, the students,

and the ways that we work hard every day. She also

loves computers! “Computers provide learning

opportunities that those without computers may not

have access to,” she says. Mrs. Jones has tons of fun

projects for all of her students, but her favorite is the

non-fiction iBook project that the 8th-graders do. ˝

It is a bittersweet year for her since she is

retiring. She will miss the teachers and students at

LMS the most. Mrs. Jones was also nominated for

Educator of the Year 2019. She is being recognized for

her relationships with her students and the positivity she

brings every day to Lincoln Magnet School. ˝

Mrs. Ostermeier has been a substitute teacher for 6 years. She used to

teach P.E. at Lincoln Magnet school. She taught for 31.5 years before she retired

and became a substitute teacher. Her favorite part of being a substitute teacher is being able to work with all the kids at Lincoln Magnet. She decided to do this

because she likes teaching and it is pretty good money. Substitute teaching gives her a flexible schedule, if she is busy one day she can say no. She likes to

teach all subjects, but math is the biggest challenge for her.˝

“Mrs. O” used to teach Physical Education at Lincoln Magnet. She also coached cross country and track. The hardest challenge for teaching P.E. was

making sure all the students had a good experience and felt like they were participating. “I wanted all the students to feel like they accomplished

something in gym class” she said. ˝

In a time when there is a huge teacher shortage, substitute teacher's are more important than ever and Lincoln Magnet is very lucky to have one as

friendly, helpful and dedicated as Mrs. O!˝

A helping hand is also needed closer to “home.” Several teachers around Lincoln Magnet are looking for help in their classrooms. Whether you need service hours or not, you can lend a helping hand. Here are some of the teachers who are waiting for your assistance:˝

Mrs. Kyes would welcome some help organizing her classroom. [email protected] ˝

Ms. Zimmers needs help organizing her filing cabinet. [email protected] ˝

Polls & MoreCafe Favorites! Written By Carson M

There are many types of food in the school cafeteria. There is healthy, green food, and there is greasy, “better tasting food”, said Jarvis Thompson. Most lean towards the less healthy side, saying it's more appealing, and better tasting. After a survey of 15 students per grade, the favorite meal in the LMS Cafeteria came out to be chicken tenders. We asked 15 students from each grade level what their favorite Lincoln Magnet-served meal was, and the final two came out to be chicken patty sandwiches and chicken tenders. All in all, the chicken tenders came out on top, winning the survey by 7 votes. ˝

One of the basics of being on the track team is that you must run when told to do so. At

the beginning of every practice, you are asked to run 400 meters, which is one lap around the

track. Next, Coach Lynn will put everyone in lanes 1-6 for stretching, except for the students

he chooses to lead the group. If you do track in eighth grade, you want to pace yourself on the

first 400 meters at the beginning of practice, but you also want to try and be one of the first

kids done, because those are the students that Lynn chooses to lead. ˝

We checked out some of the sets that the SFSC (Springfield Figure Skating Club) has allowed us to see, and they are truly magnificent! They sincerely care about this, because each set has elaborate and beautiful details. They have created a giant castle door for “The Ice Queen,” and a big house for Dorothy in “The Wizard Of Oz.” They are big and bold showing detail in almost every part of it. Even the smaller sets are still a work of pure art! We interviewed some of the skaters at the shows “dress rehearsal” (which is when they practice the show in costume), and they have told us that they are having the most amazing time! These skaters are truly happy to be included in the SFSC’s show. Springfield’s Figure Skating club doesn't care if you're wanting to do competitive skating or skate just for fun! The club welcomes all kinds of skaters, having one of the most diverse clubs in the midwest. The Springfield Figure Skating Club doesn’t just do just Spotlight On Ice. They have many events like exhibitions where skaters can show off or just have fun with friends!˝

This year March Madness begins on Tuesday, March 19th and ends Monday April 8th. There are a total amount of 68 teams that participate for the championship during March Madness. A committee picks the 36 best teams in college basketball and then the remaining teams are seeded. It is going to take place in the Xl Center in Harford, Connecticut. This tournament determines the best college team. It also raises money for the best schools, and for people who bet on the winning teams. Also, the cities that hosts the games make money because of the fans, and teams buying tickets, lodging, and buying snacks and meals, and transportation. The #1 seeds are Duke, Gonzaga, Virginia, and North Carolina.

The Big Event Written By Nick T

Walk around any mall, sporting event or school, including Lincoln Magnet, and you’ll see people wearing the iconic “swish” on their clothing or their shoes. Nike Inc., (formerly Blue Ribbon Sports), is an American sportswear company headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon. It was founded in 1964 as “Blue Ribbon Sports” by Bill Bowerman, who was a track and field coach at the University of Oregon, and his former student Phil Knight. They opened their first retail outlet in 1966 and started the Nike brand shoe in 1972. The company was renamed Nike, Inc. in 1978 and went public two years later. By the early 2000s, Nike had retail outlets and stores in more than 170 countries around the world. ˝

After everyone stretched as a group, they do three hops and another lap around the track. Coach Lynn will assign you to a lane one through eight. Everyone will line up in those lines like you are getting ready to start a 100-meter race since that is where you start 100 meters. Once everyone is good, coach Lynn will start some more stretching, except this time you are not stationary. Lynn will shout out something like “high knees” and then you will do the high knees hard to coach Muncy, who will be about 50ft away. Make sure you do these exercises past Muncy because it is possible that the rep won’t count and then you have to do them again. At the end of this warm-up, you will do three hops and then a sprint past Muncy, then you walk the rest of the track until you get back to coach Lynn.˝

Coach Lynn will have something different planned for each practice, but for the first practice at the track, Lynn will have everyone do a 400-meter race. This just the track portion of track and field. They are very different things and that should be remembered. The track consists of the 100-meter races, hurdles, 200-meter races, 400-meter races, 800-meter races, and the 1600 meter race. The field consists of the long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, and sometimes pole vault. ˝

If you are planning to participate in the long jump you will be really good if you have above average leg muscles. The same is helpful for the high jump, but you will also need to be flexible because some of the positions you will be using for it you will be needing it. Then there are shotput and discus. You definitely need arm strength to compete in these two activities because you are throwing objects and competing to see who can throw the farthest. Also, you will need more arm strength in shot-put because you will be throwing an eight-pound metal ball. Coach Muncy, the throwing coach, will explain more on how to do these.˝

The company caters to the specific needs of different sports teams and renowned athletes around the world. Part of Nike’s success is owed to endorsements by athletes like Michael Jordan, Mia Hamm, Roger Federer, and Tiger Woods. The Niketown chain stores, which first opened in 1990, pay tribute to these athletes by supplying them with performance gear from head-to-toe. Its wide range of sports equipment and products is always able to fulfill the requirements of athletes. Athletes in almost any sports arena can depend on this brand to supply them nothing but the best. Whether you do track and field events or swim, you would find durable, comfortable, and appealing sporting goods from Nike.˝

A Day filled with Green and

Music By Maddie K

The LMS band (6th, 7th, and 8th graders) played at Springfield’s St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, March 16, in downtown Springfield. The band marched around the heart of Springfield, passing places such as the Old State Capitol and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. They played the song, Havana, by Camila Cabello at the parade on Saturday. Mr. Russell, the school’s band director, led the marching band (all 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade band students) in an all-green suit. Students dressed in green attire and represented LMS with spirit wear. The band players enjoyed a sunny morning playing throughout the parade route. “My favorite part about being in the parade was probably entertaining people in the crowds,” says Isabel Alexander, a flute player in the band, “It is nice to know people are enjoying the song.” LMS played very well at the parade, and everyone had a fun time. ˝

Middle school to high school is a huge leap that everyone will have to take if they want to be successful in life. Some students will take that jump at ease, while others may struggle a little. This is nothing to worry or feel badly about. If you need that extra boost and trust me we’ve all been there, Lincoln Magnet

has homework advice and tutoring. Many teachers would love to spend the time making sure their students know exactly what is going on in class. If you are struggling in math, you can ask your math teacher when they have free time. Asking a Mathlete would also be a good choice for more help in math. Literature is no different. Ask any of your teachers to help you. They all have a few minutes in between classes, during their planning period or even their intervention time where you can stop by and ask questions. Failure does not have to be part of the picture at LMS. Students should be able to feel confident in their classes and get good grades. You just need to ask around and find the additional help you need.˝

Among all of Lincoln Magnet’s clubs and activities, Jazz Band is one of the best. It has tons of benefits for middle school musicians. As pianist and trumpeter, Ethan Heinzel believes, “Others should definitely join jazz band because it’s a great experience for people who might be a little irritated in band class because people don’t seem very advanced. It’s a great place for moderate to advanced musicians.” Lead alto saxophonist Jocelyn Schorfheide said, “I think it is really fun to connect with people of different grades and meet new people, along with playing fun yet challenging music.” So there you have it, Jazz Band is a really fun environment for LMS’s musicians. Whether you’re fairly new to an instrument, or an expert, Jazz Band is the place for you. It’s worth a try at least!
