WELCOME TO THE LIGHT PRINCESS!

After its success last season, I am thrilled to welcome back this whimsical adaptation of George MacDonald’s classic fairy tale, The Light Princess. This production marks the continuation of our collaboration with Boston-based playwright Lila Rose Kaplan and composer Mike Pettry, who have created a theatrical adventure fi lled with kings and queens, witches and potions. Under the direction of Allegra Libonati (The Snow Queen and Hansel and Gretel), and featuring actors from the A.R.T. Institute Class of 2015, The Light Princess takes us on a journey of discovery and explores the bonds that keep us grounded. Turn the pages of this program for more information on the show, and for fun games to play. The holidays are a perfect time for the whole family to enjoy theater together, so on behalf of everyone at the A.R.T. and The Light Princess, I welcome you here today. Enjoy the show!

AHMAD MAKSOUDWiseman 1If you could fl y, where would you go?If I could fl y, I would fi nd a remote, private island and

make it my home away from home. Or I would just fl y to Japan. What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? The best thing about not having gravity would probably be that I wouldn’t trip as much, or at all, even. What is a piece of wisdom you live by? The biggest piece of wisdom I try to live by is that, on the ladder of life, in order to keep climbing higher, you’ve got to let go before you can grab on.

CASTCOREY SULLIVANKing/GravitronWhat do you like most about being an actor? I like being part of passing a story on

to people, keeping the story alive, and getting to work with so many wonderful artists. What is your favorite fairy tale? Grimm’s fairy tale “The Mouse, The Bird, and The Sausage,” because it has a mouse, a bird, and a sausage. It has a terrible message though, that we should stay put and not stray from our given roles. I think if a mouse wants to be a bird or a bird wants to be a sausage, then so be it! If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? I would make a potion that would turn me into a giraff e, and another potion to turn me back.

KEVIN WADEMan of Black Diamond/GravitronWhere are you from? I’m from Sun Valley, Idaho—way, way up in the snowy mountains. I

imagine the Princess would fl y there to enjoy the view. What is your favorite fairy tale? Peter Pan is my favorite fairy tale. I always loved the idea of living in the woods, maybe in a treehouse—so I became obsessed with the lost boys. What is the furthest depth you have ever been underwater? I once went scuba-diving in an old shipwreck, which was fun and spooky. We saw a barracuda!

INGRID WERNERGravitron What do you like most about being an actor? My hobby is my work—I get to play and live

completely diff erent lives from project to project.Where are you from? I’m from a town in Norway called Asker. If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? Malefi cent—she’s my favorite Disney character. As a kid I was always drawn to the “older” more complex characters rather than the princesses. I just felt drawn to the power they had and that they more often than not were completely misunderstood—I love to imagine what could have happened to them to make them so vengeful.

KRISTIN WETHERINGTONWitch If you could fl y, where would you go? If I could fl y, I would travel non-

stop! I’ve been very lucky to see many parts of the world and I’ve been bitten by the travel bug! I would most likely spend my days on a beach somewhere and fl y home to sleep in my own bed at night. If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? Time travel! I’d love to meet people that lived before I was born and I am very curious about what the future will be like. What do you love most about your character? My evil laugh! MUhahahahaha!!

MELANIE COMEAUAssistant to the ChoreographersWhat is your favorite fairy tale? Is Shrek a fairytale? Regardless, I choose Shrek... It has humor, magic, and a clever storyline that addresses love and acceptance in an amazing, non-traditional way.If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? You know when you can’t think of a word and it feels like it’s on the tip of your tongue but you just can’t grasp it? I would make a potion that would help you think of that word right away. What is your favorite part of the story of The Light Princess? The idea that happiness isn’t created by what your life looks like, but by whom you share it with.

TESSA NELSONDramaturgWhat is your favorite fairy tale? “Three Billy Goats Gruff ” because there are sound eff ects and a very scary troll. If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? Puss in Boots because he is very clever and if someone is being unfair, he stands up to them and changes it. What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? Your feet wouldn’t get any wetter than the rest of you when it rains and your socks would stay dry. I hate wet socks.

JEREMY SORTOREVocal CoachWhere are you from? Denver, CO. If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? I would be the frog prince—he gets to hop around (almost like he doesn’t have any gravity!) and in the end everyone sees him for who he is.What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? That upside down feeling in your belly, like when you’re at the top of a roller coaster.

INTERVIEW WITH GEORGE MACDONALDBy Tessa Nelson

Wiseman 1: Well, George MacDonald, it really is a pleasure having you here!

Wiseman 2: I’m not George MacDonald, I’m the second Wiseman.

Wiseman 1: I know that, but remember, you’re pretending to be George MacDonald to help write the program.

Wiseman 2: Oh yeah, now I remember. I am George MacDonald and I wrote The Light Princess, one of Scotland’s most famous fairy tales. I’m very clever.

Wiseman 1: Right then, George MacDonald. What is your favorite part about writing fairy tales?

Wiseman 2: Well, I have eleven children, Lilia, Mary, Caroline, Greville, Irene, Winifred, Robert, Maurice, Bernard, George, and Ronald MacDonald.

Wiseman 1: I bet he likes burgers.

Wiseman 2: Well, he does like

fairy tales. So, I suppose my favorite part of writing fairy tales is making my children happy.

Wiseman 1: Very nice! What is your favorite thing about being underwater?

Wiseman 2: Oh, I’ve loved the sea ever since I was a little boy. Even though the water was very very cold where I grew up, I would spend hours in the North Sea on the beaches. I’d explore tide pools, look for shells, and try to catch little fi sh with my hands. The ocean is defi nitely one of my favorite things.

Wiseman 1: Speaking of, where are you from?

Wiseman 2: Well, I originally grew up on a farm in Huntly, Aberdeenshire in Scotland, but I later went to study in London. Now I live in Italy. My children Lilia, Grace, and Mary have asthma as well as terrible coughs, and the fresh Italian air is good for them.

This production of The Light Princess is adapted from a fairy tale by Scottish author George MacDonald. Mr. MacDonald couldn’t answer questions for the program because he died over 100 years ago, but the Wisemen have done their best to guess what his an-swers might have been.

fairy tales. So, I suppose my favorite part of writing fairy tales is making my children happy.

Wiseman 1: I have one last question for you. What would be the best part of not having any gravity?

Wiseman 2: Hmmmmm… Well, I must say that’s a diffi cult question for me. My life is full of so much gravity, both happy and sad. I have many wonderful children and a magnifi cent wife. They give me gravity because I love them so much. I also have great and talented friends. You may have heard of some of them. Charles Dodgson—you might know him as Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland—is a great friend of mine and very inspiring. However, I also carry

some sad gravity. My mother, Helen, died when I was only eight years old. I love her so much and miss her so terribly that I always keep a letter she wrote with me, so that I can remember her. But I don’t think gravity, happy or sad, is a bad thing to have most of the time. I think gravity is part of life and that’s why I wrote The Light Princess, so we can all learn to love and embrace all the gravity life brings.

Wiseman 1: Thank you for answering some of our questions, George MacDonald, and thank you most of all for your fairy tale!

George MacDonald was an author and Christian minister who lived between 1824 and 1905. He is best known for his works of fantasy which include The Light Princess, The Princess and the Goblin, The Princess and Curdie, and Lilith: A Romance. He inspired authors such as Lewis Carroll, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, W.H. Auden, and many more. MacDonald’s life was not without tragedy. In addition to the death of his mother at an early age, he also lost his father, his brother, and his children Lilia, Grace and Mary; all to tuberculosis. In a time characterized by staunch Calvinism, MacDonald made a plea for religion more centered on forgiveness. An advocate for the arts and particularly theater, MacDonald gave lectures upholding actors’ moral character (generally decried by the public) and even went so far as to turn his family into a repertory theater company that toured England raising money for the English and Italian poor.

The A.R.T. at Harvard University is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond. The A.R.T. was founded in 1980 by Robert Brustein, who served as Artistic Director until 2002, when he was succeeded by Robert Woodruff. Diane Paulus began her tenure as Artistic Director in 2008. Under her leadership, the A.R.T. seeks to expand the boundaries of theater by programming events that immerse audiences in transformative theatrical experiences.

Throughout its history, the A.R.T. has been honored with many distinguished awards, including the Tony Award for Best New Play for All the Way (2014); consecutive Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical for Pippin (2013) and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012), both of which Paulus directed; a Pulitzer Prize; a Jujamcyn Prize for outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent; the Tony Award for Best Regional Theater; and numerous Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards.

The A.R.T. collaborates with artists around the world to develop and create work in new ways. It is currently engaged in a number of multi-year projects, including the Civil War Project, an initiative that will culminate in the staging of new work this season. Under Paulus’s leadership, the A.R.T.’s club theater, OBERON, has been an incubator for local and emerging artists and has attracted national attention for its innovative programming and business models.

As the professional theater on the campus of Harvard University, the A.R.T. catalyzes discourse, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative exchange among a wide range of academic departments, institutions, students, and faculty members, acting as a conduit between its community of artists and the university. A.R.T. artists also teach undergraduate courses in directing, dramatic literature, acting, voice, design, and dramaturgy. The A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training, which is run in partnership with the Moscow Art Theater School, offers graduate-level training in acting, dramaturgy, and voice.

Dedicated to making great theater accessible, the A.R.T. actively engages nearly 10,000 community members and local students annually in project-based partnerships, workshops, conversations with artists, and other enrichment activities both at the theater and across the Greater Boston area.
