The Light of St. John’s November, 2019

Disappointments in life often have a way of driving our faith dangerously close to the edge. Either

someone lets you down or your circumstances just don’t work out the way you thought they would.

What we expect from God so often seems to contradict what we experience in life. We find ourselves

wanting to ask: If God is good, then why did this happen? If God really cares, then why did my

prayers go unanswered? Questions like these can leave us feeling bitter toward God and doubting our

faith. We may even develop a kind of Christianity that shrugs its shoulders and says, “Well, that’s just

the way it is.”

I’ll be the first to admit that trusting in God’s providence is hard to do when it comes to difficult

circumstances over which we have no control or no immediate answer to our prayers. But the early

disciples were no different from us in that respect. Luke Chapter 24 records the Easter Sunday account

of two followers of Christ who were walking on the road to Emmaus. Jesus was walking with them,

though they didn’t recognize him. And he asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you

walk along?” One of them, named Cleopas, replied “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who

hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.” “What things?” Jesus

asked. “The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who

did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. But our

leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they cruci-

fied him. We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. (Luke 24:17-21).

Like many of the Jews, these two disciples expected the Messiah to deliver Israel from their Roman

oppressors. When Jesus was arrested and crucified, they were greatly disappointed. And it was be-

cause God was doing something very different from their plan. He was saving them from their sins,

not Roman oppression. That’s also the reason for many of our disappointments. We expect God to do

one thing and He does something entirely different. Yet from the story of these two disciples, we can

learn that God is always working, even in the midst of difficulty and even when we don’t realize why

things happen the way they do.

Much of God’s work is behind-the-scenes, hidden from our view. In fact, often His work is most

clearly seen in the rearview mirror. I’ve looked back enough times to see and trust that things that

happen in our lives are not a product of good or bad luck, or of random coincidences. Instead they are

divinely shaped and guided by an all loving God. When we understand the faithfulness of God, we can

rise above every circumstance in our lives that leaves us feeling disappointed. When you feel blinded

by life’s disappointments, stay in faith. Trust God’s promises. He is always faithful.

Blessings, Terry

We Owe Them a Lot

On Veterans Day we remember again

Our men and women who served;

We honor them now for what they did

then:

The liberties they preserved.

Let’s never forget their sacrifice,

The hard, heavy work they have done;

They did what was asked, crucial needs

they fulfilled,

With a telephone, pencil or gun.

We’re happy and proud to honor them;

They gave so much more than they got.

Our heroes, our veterans kept freedom

safe;

All of us owe them a lot. By Joanna Fuchs

Bible Verses About The Purpose of Thanksgiving

I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness

I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High.

Psalm 7:17(NIV)

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so

walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in

the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with

thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:6-7

"Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness;

come before him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. It is he who

made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter

his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him

and praise his name. For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his

faithfulness continues through all generations."Psalm 100:1-5

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever." Psalm

118:29
