    -= 3. Story -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

    A long time ago...

Before life began, before the world had form, three golden goddessesdescended upon the chaotic land of Hyrule. They were Din, the GoddessofPower, Nayru, the Goddess of Wisdom and Farore, the Goddess ofCourage.

Din, with her strong flaming arms, cultivated the land to create theearth.Nayru poured her wisdom onto the earth to give the spirit of law totheworld. Farore's rich soul created all life forms who would uphold thelaw.

These three great goddesses returned to the heavens, leaving behindthegolden sacred Triforce. Since then, the Triforce has become the basisforHyrule's providence. Where the Triforce stood became sacred land.

In the vast, deep forest of Hyrule, the Great Deku Tree served as theguardian spirit. The children of the forest, the Kokiri, lived withthe Great

Deku Tree. Each Kokiri had his or her own guardian fairy, except one.Hisname was Link.

Early one morning, Link was having a nightmare. It was the samenightmare hehad every night. During a storm, Link would find himself standing infront ofa mysterious castle. A rider on horseback, carrying a girl, would raceby. The girl would look at Link as if to say something. Then, anotherrider wouldappear. This big man clad in black would look down menacingly at Link.

    Linkwould then awaken.

"Link! Hey, get up, Link! The Great Deku Tree wants to talk to you!"

As Link opened his eyes, he saw a fairy floating in front of him. Thisfairy's name was Navi. Navi was sent to summon Link to the Great DekuTree.

"Oh Navi, thou hast returned!" said the Deku Tree. "Thank you, Link, forcoming. Thy slumber these past moons must have been restless, and fullofnightmares. A vile climate pervades this world. Verily, ye have feltit. Thetime has come to test thine courage. I have been cursed. I need you todispelthe curse with your wisdom and courage. Art thou prepared?"

Link entered the Great Deku Tree and broke the curse.

"Well done, Link! I knew that ye were worthy of carrying out mywishes. Awicked man of the desert cast this dreadful curse on me. Employing hisvile, sorcerous energies, the evil one is searching for the sacred realmconnectedto Hyrule. For it is there that one will find the divine relic, theTriforce, that contains the essence of the gods. Whoever holds the Triforce canmaketheir wishes come true. Thou must never allow the desert man to layhis handson the sacred Triforce. Thou must never suffer that man to enter thesacredrealm of legend. Link, go now to Hyrule Castle. There, ye will surelymeetthe Princess of destiny. Present this stone to the Princess. I haveforeseenthat she will understand everything."

The Great Deku Tree gave Link the spiritual stone of the forest.Beforedying, the Deku Tree's last words were, "The future depends upon thee,Link.Thou art courageous."

    Kokiri Forest-------------

You start the game sleeping inside your home in the Kokiri Forest. When Navi

the Fairy comes, you'll wake up. Leave your house and run up the smallhilland go to the left. Go around or climb over the fences to reach thewall. When the Action button says "Enter", push A and crawl through thepassageway. There will be a maze with a boulder moving through it. Get through thebackof the maze and open the chest there to get the Kokiri Sword.

Get back out by crawling through the passage again. Run around thegrassyareas, jump across the river with square-shaped rocks, and go into

    Mido's

  • 7/29/2019 The Legend of Zelda.docx

    5/86

Home and open the chests to find some rupees. When you have at least40Rupees, go to the Shop and buy the Deku Shield. Now, go towards thepath tothe Deku Tree and talk to Mido. If you have your sword and shieldequipped,

he'll let you pass through the path to talk to the Tree. Talk to theDekuTree and hear what he has to say until it opens up in front. When youcanmove again, enter the tree through that opening.

    The Great Deku Tree-------------------

Inside the Great Deku Tree, defeat the enemies there and get some DekuNutsand Deku Sticks. Also, cut down bushes to get nuts, rupees, and even

hearts!Climb the ladder to reach the second floor, where you'll find the Mapin achest. Jump across the gap to the right of the chest and enter thedoorthere. When the Deku Scrub in the center of the room attacks, just useyourshield and reflect the nut back at him. When it hits, try and catchhim andhe'll give you information on how to defeat his other brothers. Go tothenext room and run through the room, jumping on the gray block, thenthe otherside before it crumbles. Open the chest to get the Fairy Slingshot, yourfirst side weapon!

Since the block crumbled, you can't find a way back across, so it'stime touse your slingshot. Aim at the ladder high above you, and it'll fall, givingyou access to the door again! Get back into the main area and shoottheSkulltulas crawling on the vine-like walls above the chest with theMap.After they're all defeated, climb up the wall and touch ground upthere to

get to the third floor. Go a little bit to the right and enter thedoorthere. Take out a Deku Stick and light it up, then light the othertorch inthe room to leave the room afterwards. Push the switch and the threeplatforms in middle of the room will rise for a limited time. Jumpacross theplatforms to the other side and open the chest to get the Compass.

To get back to the other side without the platforms risen, run to theotherside and climb up the wall. Go back into the main area and defeat anyof the

Skulltulas hanging above the edges of the walkways by swinging yoursword at

    6/86

their soft bellies twice. Then, go to the edge of the platform facingthecenter, and then look down at the web. Jump off the ledge and fallthroughthe web, destroying it. You'll now be able to reach the basement thisway!

Get onto dry land and take out another Deku Stick and light it up.Now, runacross the shallow water to the other side by the webs and burn theweb apartand go through the door.

Defeat the enemies there and aim your slingshot at the eye above thedoor andshoot to raise the bars blocking it. Go through the door, and diveunderwaterand push the switch to lower the water. Get back to the entrance ofthe roomand wait for the platform to reach your side. Then, get on and let it

takeyou across the water to the other side. (Don't worry about the spikedlog, itwon't hit you, but it'll hurt if you didn't push the switch!) DefeattheSkulltula and pull the block across the floor so you can reach thedoor.Defeat the Deku Baba here, then take a Deku Stick and light the twotorcheshere to open the door. Go into the next room, but watch out; threeenemieswill fall from the ceiling to attack, so be prepared. Light up a DekuStickafter that and burn the web blocking access to the next room.

Go into the room and defeat the Deku Babas, then push the block intothewater. Then, jump into the water and get onto the ledge with the littorch onit. Light up a Deku Stick by it and jump from the platform onto theblock, then onto the other side. Swing the Stick down above the web on thefloor toburn it apart. Fall into the hole and surface on the dry land again.Thistime, there are three Deku Scrubs there and you can only beat them ina

certain order. I believe the order in killing them is: 2 3 1. When youhitthe last one, it'll start moving around the room, so catch it. He'llgive youa tip on defeating the boss in the next room, then leave. Refill yourheartsif needed and go into the next room and look up at the ceiling. Theboss,Gohma, will see you and jump onto the floor to attack. Read the Bossessection of this guide for information on beating Gohma. After you beatit, take the Heart Container and go to the light to exit the Deku Tree!

    Kokiri Forest

  • 7/29/2019 The Legend of Zelda.docx

    7/86

    -------------

Back outside, listen to what the Deku Tree has to say. It'll then giveyouthe Kokiri Emerald, which is also the first Spiritual Stone! Now,leave the

area and talk to Mido at the end of the path. When he leaves, exit theforestand as you leave, Saria will talk to you. She'll give you the FairyOcarina, then it's off to Hyrule Castle! On your way out, talk with the owl, then goon out to Hyrule Field.

    Hyrule Field------------

Now that you're done with Kokiri Forest, it's time to go to Hyrule

Castle! From where you spoke with the owl, follow the path through HyruleField tothe castle gates. You may be stuck fighting throughout the night ifyou can'tget there before sunset. No worry because you can fend off theskeletons thatcome out during the night and even get some quick rupees! When morningcomes, run across the drawbridge and into the Market.

    Market------

Stop at the guardhouse right after you cross the bridge and destroyall thepots for an easy bunch of rupees. Don't enter the Bazaar and buy theHylianShield yet; you can get a discount on it later if you wait a bit. Gothroughthe Market and follow the path out of it to the castle.

    Outside Hyrule Castle---------------------

You can't enter through the gates because they're closed and guards

areeverywhere, so you're going to sneak in! First, climb the wall withvines onit and run across until you're at the other side of the gate below. Then, drop down and purposely get yourself caught by one of the guardsstandingaround. When you're back outside, go back to the wall with the vinesandMalon will be there. Speak with Malon to get a Weird Egg, then climbthewall. Run across to the gate and go down the ladder and exit the doorto get

    past it.

  • 7/29/2019 The Legend of Zelda.docx

    8/86

Now the tricky part is avoiding the guards, and I'll try and describehow toget past them as good as I can. When the path turns left for the firsttime, run up the hill and into the grassy area. Run past the guard andfollow the

path through the grass to the castle. Before you reach the castle, turn offthe path to the left and climb up the wall to the left of the guardand themain entrance. Jump down into the water and swim down the stream untilyoureach the end where it's blocked. Jump out and walk towards thesleeping man.By now, your Weird Egg has hatched, so use the Rooster to wake him up!He'lltalk to you, then run away. Now, push and/or pull the two blocks wherehe wassitting and push them both over the edge. Jump across to the door with

anopening with water coming out and crawl in.

    Hyrule Castle-------------

Go through the Castle Courtyard while avoiding ALL the guards alongthe wayuntil you reach Princess Zelda at the end of all that stuff. Talk toher andlisten to her story, then she'll give you a letter, which allows youto getthrough guarded gates without a problem. As you leave, you'll run intoImpa.Talk to her and she'll teach you Zelda's Lullaby and escort you out ofthecastle, away from the guards. Now, run through Hyrule Field until youreachLon Lon Ranch near the middle of the field.

    Lon Lon Ranch-------------

Enter the first house to the left and talk to Talon, the man you wokeup at

the castle. He'll play a game with you for some rupees; find his threespecial cuccos and get a Bottle filled with Lon Lon Milk! After youwin, gointo the ranch itself and talk to Malon. Use your Ocarina and she'llteachyou Epona's Song. After that, leave the ranch and head east of thecastle toKakariko Village. Get to Kakariko Village by crossing the bridge overthestream east of the castle and run up the stairs in the mountain toreach thetown.

    Kakariko Village

    9/86

    ----------------

Now that you're in Kakariko Village, go up the stairs to the left ofthe mainpath, and then go up the next set of stairs near the lookout tower. Goup to

the guard by the gate and show him Zelda's Letter. He'll talk to youandhe'll eventually tell you to go to the Market and buy the HylianShield. You'll get a discount on it after talking to him! While you're in theMarket, stop by in the now open Happy Mask Shop and borrow the Keaton Mask. Now thatyou have the mask and the shield, go to the Lost Woods by entering itfromKokiri Forest.

    Lost Woods----------

From the entrance to the woods, go right into the next area, then goleft.Turn right again, and then go left through a couple of areas. Then, turn leftand finally turn right. Go through the maze at the Sacred ForestMeadow, andtalk to Saria at the end. She'll teach you Saria's Song, which letsyou speakwith her anytime. After that, get all the way back to Kakariko Villageby thegate like before. Now that the gate is opened, it's time to go upDeathMountain!

    Death Mountain Trail--------------------

As you head up the mountainside, you'll see the Dodongo's Cavern, butthere'sa boulder blocking the entrance, so just continue up the path for now.Whenthe path splits, take the right path to Goron City.

    Goron City

    ----------

Once there, walk the tightrope right across to the lone Goron sittingon aplatform. Talk to him to hear about his brother, Darunia, then walkbackacross to the ledges by the entrance. Go down the stairs all the wayto thebottom level and step on the mat in front of the closed door. Take outyourOcarina and play Zelda's Lullaby. Then, when the door opens, stand onthe matin front of Darunia and play Saria's Song to make him dance! After

    he's done

    10/86

dancing, he'll give you the Goron's Bracelet, which lets you pick upthe BombFlowers. Now, leave Goron City.

Back outside, find the area where there's a Goron sitting by a groupof Bomb

Flowers. Then, pick up a Bomb Flower and throw it over the edge at thecavernfar below. If you threw well, you'll destroy the boulder, granting youaccessto Dodongo's Cavern! Go back down the mountain and enter the cave.

    Dodongo's Cavern----------------

From the start, go down the right hill and hug the wall to the rightof thelava pool to reach dry land on the other side. Climb up the ladder andtake

the Bomb Flowers and use them to blow open the doors and the Beamos.Enterthe last door and watch out for the enemies here; they explode shortlyafteryou defeat them. At the end of this long room, push an Armos statueonto theswitch to remove the bars blocking the door. Enter the door and godown thehallway, then enter the next door. Get ready for a little fight hereagainsttwo very agile Lizalfos. After you beat them, go and enter the nextdoor atthe back of this room.

Defeat the Dodongos here by getting behind them and hitting theirtails withyour sword a few times. After they're all defeated, light a Deku Stickandlight the other three torches in the room to open the door out ofthere.Continue through the next room until you end up in the main areaagain. Thistime, make your way to the other side of the room and blow open thedoorsthere, too. In the middle room, be sure to take the Map after bombingtheroom open. Enter the door at the end closest to the big dinosaur head.

The secret here is to detonate ALL the Bomb Flowers here at once. Todo that, pick a Bomb Flower that's NOT on the gray ledge and put it in theempty spacein the middle of the ledge. When it explodes, so will the otherflowers, which will now trigger the stairs to come down. Climb the stairs andthe wallup to the next floor and land on either side because it doesn'tmatter.Follow the path to where the path connects with the other one and turnleft/right depending on what side you're on, and enter the next room.

  • 7/29/2019 The Legend of Zelda.docx

    11/86

Push all the Armos until you find the one that's a statue and push itawayfrom the ladder so you can get up there. Push the switch to open thedoor tothe next room. In the next room, just run down the hall and make thejump

between the broken bridge. In the next room, avoid the blade traps andmakeyour way to the other end of the room. Then, jump on the block and ontheledge right in front of the door. Turn around and jump onto theplatform withthe Bomb Flower, and pick it up and throw it so it sits on the ledgethat youwere just standing on. If successful, you'll destroy the door, givingyouaccess to the next room.

Go through the path and defeat the Lizalfos in the following room with

yoursword. Then, enter the next room and follow the hallway through thenextroom, too. Go through the next hallway and you'll end up in the roomyouskipped before. Jump across the gap and open up the chest to get theBombBag, which lets you carry Bombs! As a bonus, it already has 20 Bombsinsideit! Go through the next hallway and press the switch there to raise apillarfrom the bottom of the area to bring you down there quickly whenneeded. Walkalong the ledges and you'll see a bridge. There are two holes in thebridge, which you can easily jump over. Stand next to each hole and drop aBomb intoeach of the eyes of the big head below. When Bombs are dropped intobothholes, the mouth will open, giving you access to the rest of thecavern.

Use the pillar you activated before to get down there and enter theroominside the mouth. Enter the next room and defeat the flying bats here. Then, follow the reachable path around through a couple rooms. Then, follow

anotherpath back to the same room, but right behind a block! Push the blockdown andinto the hole where the switch is in middle of the room. Then, enterthe nextroom and drop into the lair of King Dodongo! Read the Bosses sectionof thisguide to find out how to beat the giant bomb-eater. After you beat it,takethe Heart Container and exit the cavern via the circle of light.

the town and follow the river into the side of the mountain.

(Don't worry, you'll come back to it later.)Talkto Princess Ruto and she'll walk away from you and fall into a hole inthefloor. Save her by jumping into the hole after her and you'll land inthebasement. Talk to her again and she'll finally let you carry her

around. Gothrough the door behind you and go down the hallway while avoiding thefloating bubbles. In the next room, drop into the middle area andthrow Rutoonto the platform at the other side of the room. Then, press theswitch tomake the water rise, and swim up to reach the other side, too. Runthroughthe next hallway, still avoiding the bubbles, and when you reach thedoor, turn around and shoot the switch in the ceiling to open it.

Enter the next room and dodge the enemy's attacks while waiting forthefloating platform to come down to the basement. When it comes, jump onandride up to the first floor again where you were before. Walk along theledgeand enter the next room with the holes in the floor. This time, makeyour wayto the other end of the room and enter the door to the next area. Whenthepath splits, take the far right path and step on the switch. If thedoorshuts again if you get off the switch, place Ruto on the switch tokeep itopen for you. (This goes for all the switches in this area.) Defeat

Leave that room and head to the right side of the room (consult theMap ifyou need help). Go into the northeast room and you'll find anotherParasitic

Tentacle here. Kill it like the other one, then exit this room. Now,take themiddle path into the now-unblocked chamber. Defeat the Green ParasiteTentacle swinging from the ceiling. After you defeat it, the bigbarrier inthe room with the holes will disappear. Go back to the room with theholes, get Ruto, then drop into the new hole. You'll drop onto a ledge in thebasement, which you couldn't reach otherwise. Enter the door there andwhenshe asks you to, throw Ruto onto the platform so she can get the jewelthere. The platform will take her up a couple floors and bring a giant

    octopus downto attack!

Defeat it by running around and around until you finally get behindit. Then, use the Boomerang and attack the weak spot with the sword. Repeat theprocessa few more times to defeat it, then climb onto the platform to get tothesecond floor. Go down the hallway and enter the next room. Use theBoomerangto make the shaky blocks stay still for a while, then jump across themto theother side! In the next room, jump onto the ledge and ride it down tothefirst floor again in that room you skipped earlier. This time, you'renowable to reach the switch there. Get a crate from the nearby ledge andput iton the switch to keep the door open for you.
