THE LEGEND OF MOUNT TANGKUBAN PERAHU

  Once upon a time in west Java,

Indonesia. There lived a wise king who had a

 beautiful daughter. Her name was Dayang

umbi. he liked weaving very much.

One day, she was weaving a cloth in her

castle. !hen one of her tool fell to the

ground. he was very tired at the time so she

was too la"y to take it. Then she #ust

shouted out loud.

$%nybody there& 'ring me my tool. I will give you special present. If you are

female, I will consider you as my sister. If you are male, I will marry you(

  uddenly a male dog appeared, its name was Tumang. He cam to Dayag

umbi and her the falling tool. Of course, Dayang umbi was very surprised. he

regretted her words and confused what should she do. 'ut she could not deny her

words. o she had to marry Tumang and leave her father. Then they got married

and lived in a small village. everal months later they had a son. His name was

angkuriang. He was a handsome and healthy boy.

  angkuriang liked hunting very much. He often went hunting to the woods

in his village by using his arrow. !hen he went hunting, Tumang always

accompanied him. In the past there were many deer in Java. so angkuriang often

hunted for deer.

  One day Dayang umbi wanted to have deer(s heart so she asked her son,

angkuriang to hunt for a deer. Then angkuriang went to the wood with his

arrow and don(t forget with his faithful dog, Tumang. %fter several days in thewoods. angkuriang and tumang hunted for deer. 'ut they could not find any deer.

 )o one knows They were all disappeared. angkuriang was very e*hausted and

desperate. He almost surrender. 'ut he remember his mother. He did not want to

disappoint his mother. so he killed Tumang and took it(s heart. He did not know

that Tumang was his father. %t home he gave Tumang(s heart to her mother and

said that it was the deer(s heart.

  'ut Dayang umbi knew that it was Tumang(s heart. he was so angry that

she could not control her emotion. he hit angkuriang at his head. angkuriang

was wounded. There was a scar in his head. Dayang sumbi also repelled her

son. Then, angkuriang left her mother in sadness.

  +any years passed, angkuriang became a strong and rich young man. He

wandered everywhere. One day, when he was wandering he arrived at his own

village. but he did not reali"ed it. There he met Dayang umbi. %t the time

Dayang umbi was given an eternal beauty by od so she stayed young forever.

'oth of them did not know each other. o they fell in love and then they decided

to marry.

  'ut then Dayang umbi recogni"ed a scar on angkuriang(s head. he

knew that the man who will married her was her son. Of course, It was impossiblefor them to marry. he has told him but he did not believe her. He wished that

they marry soon. Dayang umbi could(nt let it happen. o Dayang umbi gave a

very difficult condition. he wanted angkuriang to build a lake and a boat in one

night- he said she needed that for honeymoon.

angkuriang agreed. !ith the help of genie and spirits angkuriang tried to

 build it. 'y midnight he had finished the lake by building a dam in itarum river.

Then he started building the boat. It was almost dawn when he nearly finished it.

+eanwhile Dayang umbi kept watching on them. he was very worried when

she knew this. o she made lights in the east. Then the spirits thought that it was

already dawn. It was time for them to leave. Then, They left angkuriang alone.

!ithout their help he could not finish the boat.

angkuriang was very angry. He kicked the boat. Then the boat turned out

to be +ount Tangkuban /erahu. It means boat upside down. 0rom a distant it

looks like a boat upside down.
