The legend of Great Alexander and the Mermaid.

Alexander the Great was an outstanding Macedonian King .His kingdom spread to the East , he conquered nations throughout Asia and northeast Africa, and by the age of thirty he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from Greece to northwestern India.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT

He was a victorious king and a great general .He wanted to gain immortality so as to continue spreading the Greek civilization and culture to many nations.

One day he asked his generals to advise him how to find the way to immortality. They told him about the immortal water – a magic potion- guarded by a fierce dragon.

He travelled a long way and found the dragon up on the hills. He fought for hours and he managed to kill the dragon with his sword. He returned to the palace with the magic potion of immortality.

His sister ,Thessaloniki, (She gave her name to our city – the second greatest city in Greece ) drank the potion by accident ( or watered the wild onions ,that’s why they are always fresh).

Great Alexander was furious and cursed her to be half woman and half fish and sped the rest of her life in the sea.

Since then she wanders in the sea and every time she sees a ship she asks the sailors about her brother because she never stopped loving him.“Is Great Alexander alive?’“He is alive and he reigns and conquers the world” is the correct answer to let them continue their voyage. If not, she flies into fury and sinks the ship.

The largest in height statue in Greece pays tribute to the Great Greek King. The imposing artwork is accompanied by a frieze ornamented with relief figures, eight Macedonian sarissas (spears) and equally numbered shields. You’ll come across and take a photo of Alexander during your stroll down the Waterfront of Thessaloniki.
