Looking back on our projects for 2011, it is evident we have performed quite well. As the Wayne Brothers’ Mission Statement states, “Our mission is to make improvements to our world's landscapes, buildings, facilities and infrastructures.” We accomplish this through our quality of construction, and the value we create each day at our clients’ construction sites throughout the southeast. This value is of much greater importance than we may realize. To explain this, we must stop and understand how what we do each day contributes to the larger scheme of the overall economy. The LEADING EDGE

VOLUME 3 | WINTER 2011

A PUBLICATION OF WAYNE BROTHERS INCORPORATED | SITE DEVELOPEMENT & CONCRETE

Creating Value in our World  By: Keith Wayne, President As we enter the New Year, it seems only natural to reflect on our company’s mission statement and measure it against our progress over the past year. Looking back on our projects for 2011, it is evident we have performed quite well. As the Wayne Brothers’ Mission Statement states, “Our mission is to make improvements to our world's landscapes, buildings, facilities and infrastruc‐tures.” We accomplish this through our quality of construction, and the value we create each day at our clients’ construction sites throughout the southeast.  This value is of much greater impor‐tance than we may realize.  To explain this, we must stop and understand how what we do each day contributes to the larger scheme of the overall economy. (Continues on page 2)

Creating Value Continued Recently, I was privileged to hear John Allison, former CEO and Chairman of BB&T, speak to a group of business and community leaders. He promotes the importance of purposeful living, and a key part of our purpose, according to John, is for our daily work to add value to the system. He went on to explain how too much of today’s workforce efforts do not add real value to our society. He used the example of the enormous number of tax accountants in the world who use all of their talent just to interpret the complex US tax code.  Wouldn't that talent be better used to add real tangible value in some way to the business or human environment?  I agree with his observations and I am happily reminded that here at Wayne Brothers we do add real value to our world with the site development and concrete services we perform each day for our clients.   This value extends beyond that which we are paid for as each day we are improving literally thousands of lives through the places we create for them to reside, work, play and worship.  Our work creates true value!  This year our Mission Statement has driven us to contribute value to numerous facilities including edu‐cation, industrial, energy and technology.  This includes Virginia Tech, where we are building a new   performing arts center.  Think of the thousands of people who will enjoy the performances in this       facility once it is complete.   We have put in place some rather remarkable concrete foundations that serve to support heavy machining tools for a variety of industries including energy, heavy mining and metals.  These equipment foundations will have machines that produce parts and create jobs for our neighbors.  In turn, these manufacturers will add their value to our economy in the products they pro‐duce.  Wayne Brothers has also added value with our site work team through our public utility work by installing the infrastructure for three natural gas transfer stations.  In a not so small way, many homes throughout our region will be warm this winter in part because of the value we delivered.  As further evidence, our value is intertwined with technology through the numerous data centers we continue to build out across our region.  Everyone at Wayne Brothers is adding real  property value while simultaneously expanding the internet infrastructure.  Additionally, Wayne Brothers is benefiting from our data center projects, improving our technology by upgrading our smart devices and by moving our software services to the cloud.  There is no question we are engaged in a part of our      economy that does indeed add value to American lives.   Statistics say the total value of US construction contributes around 4.5% of our country’s GDP.  This means that nearly one out of every $25 of value created in the economy    originates from the efforts of folks just like us, who end each day looking back on their work with much deserved pride.  We can all be very proud that our purpose is being fulfilled as each day we build value in everything we do.

WBI was ranked No. 520 on the  Engineering News Record’s 2011 Top 600 Specialty   Contractors list!  This award is based on data analysis of the top specialty contractors’ previous year’s ranking, reve‐nue, and percentage of revenue by markets.

Preconstruction Developments

Thank you for another great year!

By: Shannon Sapp In the final quarter of 2011, I both reflect and give thanks for all of our new business. The Preconstruction team continued our pursuit of quality opportunities and “value based” clients this quarter.

In concrete, Wayne Brothers (WBI) sustained our success in the data center market by securing a second expansion opportunity at Facebook and a new data center in Charlotte. Our industrial work continues at the Caterpillar Plant in Winston-Salem in supporting their new machines. We entered the Lumber market with work at Weyerhaeuser and New South Lumber. Lastly, WBI returns to the multifamily sector with nice con-crete scopes at Talison Row Apartments near Charleston, SC, and in site develop-ment, with Highland Creek Apartments in Charlotte. Additional success was secured by our grading division with another project with Piedmont Natural Gas. Currently operating in three states, our backlog stands strong. I’d like to thank all of our customers & clients for allowing WBI to add value to your projects and our company’s history. On the Marketing front, our new look and feel is taking shape. Newly designed Business Cards should be here shortly. The new Website is entering the final stages of design and will be rolling out the beginning of 2012. You should also be reading this newsletter in its new format. Renee and I continue to search and embrace new technologies and mediums to make our company stand out above others. Please stay tuned for much more in 2012.

As 2011 comes to an end, we would like to thank all of those who made our

year successful.

It has taken every one of you to achieve this success. We cannot become complacent in our day to day safety activities such as PTP’s and STRETCHING or our incident rate will continue to rise. I encourage all of you to con-tinue watching out for and correcting any unsafe act(s), unsafe behavior(s), and/or un-safe condition(s) in order to maintain a safe work area. Once complete, more than 30,000 SFCA of cast-in-place wall ranging from 21’ to 26’ tall will have been installed in a 2 months timeframe. Upon completion of the basement walls, WBI will place more than 18,000 CY of dirt to backfill the walls. Foundations will be complete this month as WBI prepares for the steel erector to begin erection in early December. WBI’s total scope of work consist of foundations, foundation walls, basement walls, waterproofing, foundation drainage, backfilling, slab-on-grade and elevated slabs on metal deck. The scheduled finish date for this scope of work is February 2012.

Fayetteville State University Science and Technology Building Fayetteville, NC General Contractor: Rentenbach Constructors Project Manager: Daniel Wayne Superintendent: Jim Forbes

WBI’s scope of work on this project consists of foundations, foundation walls and exposed architectural shear walls. Foundations began in early November and are scheduled for a December finish. WBI will begin working on the architectural shear walls in late November. The architectural shear walls consist of 6 separate shear walls, all of which have unique geometry. The shear walls will be cast utilizing a crane climbed formwork system that will allow for the forms to stay on the wall after each lift and will not require any formwork component to be removed until the walls are topped out at a height of 85+ feet. By: Jim Rhodes, Grading Project Manager WBI’s Grading Group prides itself on installation and maintenance of highly efficient and effective erosion control Best Management Practices (BMP). BMP’s such as skimmer basins, matted ditches and outlet checks are some of the tools that engineers use to make sure all surface run off is treated prior to leaving the site. WBI begins every project with an onsite meeting consisting of the client, WBI and the onsite erosion control inspector. These meetings are some of the most important that WBI will have at any point during the projects.

Throughout the project WBI works with the client and inspector to ensure that onsite erosion is minimized and no offsite erosion occurs. All Grading Group superintendents and project managers are trained and certified through the NCDOT EC&S Storm Water Program. This training provides the knowl-edge and authority to install, inspect, docu-ment and maintain all project BMP’s.

Prescription Safety Eyewear Program We are pleased to announce the revision of our safety eyewear program that is a benefit to all WBI employees after 90 days of employment. The new program will allow employees to obtain a pair of prescription safety glasses every two years with no out of pocket expenses incurred (no co-pay), provided you have a current prescription. The enhanced program also includes all prescription powers, single vision, lined bifocal/trifocals, no-line progressive lenses and polycarbonate and plastic lenses. Attached side shields will be manda-tory for all prescription safety eyewear. We are also pleased to announce the addition of a regular (non-safety) prescription eyewear benefit that is available to all employees immediately. This will allow employees and their families an al-ternative option to purchase prescription eyewear. By using this program and going to one of the par-ticipating providers you will have the benefit of re-ceiving discounted group rates. The employee will be responsible for paying for all non-safety eye-wear and any other cost associated with the exam or purchase of regular prescription eyewear. Anyone interested in prescription safety glasses or prescription (non-safety) glasses should contact the HR department. Bonnie Raper will provide the necessary forms and loca-tions of participating providers.
