Farming remains one of the main agricultural activities contributing to the self- sufficiency of people in animal products. Wildlife plays an important role in the maintenance and diversity of the ecosystems. Altogether, these resources offer economic opportunities through reduction of poverty and migration of local inhabitants. To address the challenges posed by climate and socio-economic changes as well as globalization and permanent evolution of the market demand, the animal production sectors should develop local expertise and adopt emergent and innovative technologies. These technologies offer many opportunities in the field of animal reproduction, genetic improvement and conservation of local breeds adapted to harsh climatic conditions, disease control and prevention, and diversification of livestock products. Furthermore, research and development of non-conventional low-cost animal feeds, increasing livestock profitability and quality of animal products are also objectives shared by stakeholders including farmers, researchers, consumers, etc. Despite national and international efforts, wildlife remains under constant threats of extinction caused by the combined effects of climate change and other anthropogenic factors. In the context of implementing adaptation strategies for sustainable management and conservation, wildlife should be integrated into national development plans as well as scientific research strategies. Livestock and wildlife play important socio-economic and ecological roles and may well actively integrate arid and desert regions in the national economies and prevent environmental degradation through adequate policies for sustainable use of natural resources. Objectives The international seminar on livestock and wildlife in arid and desert areas SIEFAD 2014 organized by the Laboratory Livestock and Wildlife - Institute of Arid Regions Medenine and its partners has the following main objectives: highlighting the biological particularities and adaptation of animal species to arid and desert conditions and opportunities for improvement, analyzing structural and functional trends of livestock and wildlife in face of current and future challenges and in relation to the resources and constraints, sharing and exchanging ideas and disseminating knowledge for better use and exploitation of research results Themes Animal biology and behavior: biological particularities, physiological adaptation to stress, behavior, animal welfare. Reproduction and genetics: physiology of reproduction, genetic characterization and improvement of livestock species. Animal health and emerging diseases: analysis of epidemiological risks, tools and intervention methods against existing and emerging diseases. Animal production and processing: individual performance, productivity improvement, quality, diversification and animal products sectors. Pasture and other animal feed resources: current valorization and opportunities for improvement, expected impacts of climate change. Wildlife diversity and conservation challenges: actions relative to wildlife species including rare taxa in decline and / or at risk of extinction, conservation and management strategies. Impact of climate and socio-economic change on livestock and wildlife systems: impact on metabolism, performance and quality of animal products; effect on domestic and wild populations, species distribution and ecosystem functioning, mitigation strategies. INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON LIVESTOCK AND WILDLIFE IN ARID AND DESERT ENVIRONMENTS - SIEFAD2014 - Livestock and wildlife

facing the climatic and socioeconomic changes 16–18 December 2014, Djerba, Tunisia

Introduction

Arid and desert regions are endowed with a wealth of domestic and wild animal resources that constitute an important component of human livelihoods in these areas. Farming remains one of the main agricultural activities contributing to the self-sufficiency of people in animal products.

In the context of implementing adaptation strategies for sustainable

management and conservation, wildlife should be integrated into national development plans as well as scientific research strategies.

Livestock and wildlife play important socio-economic and ecological roles and may well actively integrate arid and desert regions in the national economies and prevent environmental degradation through adequate policies for sustainable use of natural resources.

Objectives

The international seminar on livestock and wildlife in arid and desert areas SIEFAD 2014 organized by the Laboratory Livestock and Wildlife - Institute of Arid Regions Medenine and its partners has the following main objectives:

highlighting the biological particularities and adaptation of animal species to arid and desert conditions and opportunities for improvement,

analyzing structural and functional trends of livestock and wildlife in face of current and future challenges and in relation to the resources and constraints,

sharing and exchanging ideas and disseminating knowledge for better use and exploitation of research results

Themes

Animal biology and behavior: biological particularities, physiological adaptation to stress, behavior, animal welfare.
