KUMON METHOD

OF MARKING MATHS—FOR

PARENTS

THE KUMON

COMMITMENT

As you now know Kumon is a

daily commitment. It is

expected that your child

completes at least one

workbook per day. To just do

the workbook is NOT ENOUGH!

It needs to be marked and

corrected so that every single

page has a score of 100%.

Your child’s Kumon is NOT

finished unless he/she has fixed

every mistake in their assigned

workbook for that day.

To go on to the next workbook

without having corrected the

last workbook is detrimental to

your child’s learning process.

MARKING KEY:

A large neat

circle is

placed on the

page with no

errors.

Place a tick

through the

question number

of any incorrect or

un-attempted questions.

Place a triangle

on the question

number for any

question that

has been attempted

however, is incomplete.

An example of this is

when a student has not

reduced a fraction to the

lowest possible term.

NB. Please note that a

tick would be placed

through the question

number for a fraction that

has not been reduced to

the lowest possible term

where the purpose of the

exercise is to reduce frac-

tions to the lowest possi-

ble term.

MARKING MATHS FRONT PAGE There are two scenarios you can end up with after

a Kumon workbook has been corrected:

Scenario 1—No mistakes were made. To indicate

this write a large 100% inside the circle on the front

page as shown below. A congratulatory comment can add a nice touch also.

Scenario 2—Mistakes were made. To indicate that

mistakes were made first time through and they are

now all correct write a 100% outside the circle on the

front page OR in the top left hand corner of the front

page as shown below. A regular comment of en-

couragement is always appreciated too.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Always use a red pen

Always write neatly

Use the appropriate answer book

Sides a & b are considered as one page

GRADING (Please use a RED pen)

If there are NO mistakes then circle both

sides of the page. Write 100 in the top right-hand

corner of side a to indicate that all questions are

correct on side a & b.

Tick the question number if the answer is

wrong. Each tick has a value of 1 point.

Place a triangle on the question number for any

question that has been attempted however, is

incomplete. An example of this is when your

child has not reduced a fraction to the lowest

possible term. See Marking Key for more details.

Count up the mistakes and then circle the

appropriate letter, A, B, C or D on the ‘Grade

Graph’ at top right-hand corner of side a that

corresponds to the total number of mistakes

made on side a and b. A tick is worth one mark

while a triangle is worth ½ a mark.

IF YOUR CHILD IS SELF-MARKING ENSURE

HE/SHE CLOSES THE ANSWER BOOK TO FIX

THEIR MISTAKES.

When the mistakes have been fixed use the

answer book to re-check the answers to ensure

each answer is now correct and if so then circle

the tick/triangle and write 100 at the top right-

hand corner on side a. This page is now finished.

Keep in mind it may take more than one attempt

to correct an answer.
