one’s neighbor and finds its source in God’s mercy.Whether its reachingout to a brotherKnights andhisfamily in times of trouble, aiding in disaster reliefefforts, providing wheelchairs to people withdisabilities, distribution winter coats or scholarships,or advancing theprotection of the inborn life throughultrasound machines, the charity of the Knights ofColumbus seeks to restore and affirm our woundedhumandignity.Furthermore,ourworksofcharityaremeanttoconvertthemercy of God,which is at the heart of the Gospel.Prospective members and their families are mostattractedtotheKnightsofColumbuswhentheyseetheOrder engaged in “in service to one, in service to all”.More importantly, it is often through the practice ofcharitythatweleadotherstoChristandhisChurch.FortheOrdertotakefulladvantageofthisspecialHolyYearofMercy, the firststep is foreachKnighttoopenhimself personally to the God that is “rich in mercy.”Jesusislookingatuswiththeeyesofmercy,askingustobelieveinhimandtrusthim.Heisn’tmerelyaskingustoassenttoaseriesofabstracttruths,butinsteadtoentrust our lives tohim, confident thathewill forgiveoursinsandopenforusthedoorofmercyinthehouseofhisheavenlyFather.Even more than the vastness of creation, the mightypower of God is revealed in his mercy and endlesscapacity to forgive our sins, giving us new life by hisown eternal newness. During this holy year, PopeFrancis especially urges us to “place the sacrament ofreconciliation at the center once more in such a waythatitwillenablepeopletotouchthegrandeurofGod’smercywiththeirownhands”.MaythisHolyYearofmercybeforourbelovedOrder,for each of us personally, or for our entire Church atime of grace and joy. SteveJobs&theFeastoftheHolyFamilySteveJobs,formostofus,isanITinventorandgenius,asuccessfulcorporateentrepreneur.ButmanyofusdonotknowSteveJobsasahusbandandfather.Towardstheendofhislife,abiographywaswrittenabouthimandnotmanyjournaliststhatfollowedhiscareerweresurprisedthatSteveJobswassoabsorbedinhisITresearchandworkallhislife,thathehardlyspenttimetointeractwithpeople,evenwithpeoplewhoworkedwithhimandforhim.Andassuch,hecouldbeconsideredarecluse,ahermitoranascetic.Whenhisbiographywasabouttobewritten,hewasaskedforthereasonbehindcommissioningabiographer.Whathesaidwassoinsightful.Hesaidhewantedtobeknownbyhiskids.Apparently,SteveJobsindicated,thathewasanenigma,apuzzleoramysterynotonlytohisfellowworkersbutalsoeventohischildren.Wecansurmisethat,towardstheendofSteveJobs’life,withallhisfortuneandfame,therewasnothingmoreimportanttohimthanhisfamily,particularlyhisbeingafathertohischildren.WerecentlycelebratedtheFeastoftheHolyFamily.Inthisfeast,MotherChurchinvitedustocontinuedeepeningourcontemplationontheimplicationsofthemysteryoftheincarnation.Itisgoodtonote,thatwhenJesusbecamehuman,Godembracedthetotalityofthehumancondition,whichincludesbeingamemberofafamily,subjecttotheguidanceandprotectionofhisparents:MaryandJoseph.AlthoughJesusisdivinehefollowednature’slawofgrowth,notonlyphysicallybutalsoinwisdomandknowledge.Inchildhood,pubertyandadolescence,Jesuslivedhismissioninacompletelyself-emptyingmanner.ThoughSonofGod,hewascontent

withthegradualunderstandingofhislife’spurpose,includingtheprogressivecourseofdiscoveringthewillofhisFather.Ingoingthroughthehumanprocessesofmaturationandgrowth,withinthecontextofthehumanfamily,Jesuslearnedtobewiseandtovaluepersonsorthings.Indeed,Hewastrulyhumanandwasborntoahumanfamily.WehaveaGodwhobecameoneofus,toshowusthatthereissomethinginhumanityworthembracing.Whilegrowingup,Jesussubjectedhimselftotheauthorityoftwoinstitutions:hisfamilyandhisfaith-community.Jesus,receivedfromhisfamilynotonlynourishment,careandeverythingnecessarytosurvive,butalsohislanguage,religionandculture.ItwasthroughhisfaithcommunitythathisMessianicidentityandmissionweregraduallyawakenedandcrystalized.TheFeastoftheHolyFamily,remindsusthatJesuswaspartofthefamily,asarewe.OurobservanceofthefeastmadeusbecomemindfulthatJesuswasformedandshapedbyhisfamilyandfaithcommunity.Psychologists,psychotherapistsandthosewhoareexpertinhumancognitiveorbehavioralsciencesattesttothefact,thatwearemoldedbyhumanexperiencesandconditionings,especiallyaschildreninthefamily.Indeed,familylifeisahighcalling.Why?Because,itisthenearestwecangettoanexperienceofthedivine.Hence,itisinconsonancewithitthatparentsandguardiansmustbeextracarefulonthekindsofexperiencestheygivetheirchildren.Itisgoodtobearinmindthatparentingisnotsimplyaboutfeedingandclothingourchildren,butaboveallitisaboutnurturingtheirminds,heartsandsouls.Weneedtoteachthemnotonlyloveforparents,butalsorespectforlaw,authorityandorder.And,wedonotneedtohaveaperfectfamilytodothesethings.SteveJobs’successandfulfillmentinhisprofessional,career,entrepreneuriallifeandhisfameandfortunearerenderedinsignificantwhencomparedtothelosttimewithhissons.Itcannotbedeniedthatourfamilyisatreasure.WestillhavewhatSteveJobsdidnothave.WestillhavewhatSteveJobswishedhehad–afamily.Ihopeyouwon’thaveabiographywrittenforyoujustsoyourkidscanknowyou.God’sblessingstoyouandyourfamilyalways!FatherEdsilN.Ortiz
