LIGHTING CONTROLEvery home theater should have lighting control or a dimmer. Using these controls creates ambiance and makes the space more comfortable. Proper lighting can also highlight elements of the interior. Not only do you save energy by dimming, you extend the life of your bulbs by up to 20 times their normal life.
SAFETYNo one wants to enter a cold, dark home. With lighting control you can illuminate your home before you arrive. Lights can connect to the security system, so that if the alarm goes o, all the lights turn on—you can’t turn them o by the wall dimmers—and the outside lights flash, making it obvious to first responders.
FURNITURE PRESERVATIONThe Denver sun can wreak havoc on interiors. Motorized shades can be programmed to lower at a specific time every day to save your interior as well as heating and cooling costs.
TEMPERATURE CONTROLHeating and cooling accounts for more than 40 percent of a typical home’s energy use. Controlling the temperature with a programmable thermostat can help save 16 percent of the energy used on heating and cooling.
BEATSMulti-room sound allows you to control and access music from each room. Don’t miss a minute of your favorite NPR programming as you move from one room to another while you’re starting your day. Multi-room sound is critical when you’re entertaining as well.
GADGETS
INTERIOR DESIGNER, Stacy Ewing, helped a Colorado
couple create a space for entertaining, wine storage and
enjoying one of their favorite pastimes: music. It was
important to the homeowners to have more than one
purpose for the space. But even more important was the
desire for a colorful, somewhat whimsical look.
“The purple leather chair was the first choice we made
for this room,” Ewing says. “It’s a modern take on a wingback,
and she just loved it.” From that point, Ewing knew she had
creative license to move forward with a funky, eclectic design
with a sophisticated air.
One corner of the room is home to a wrought iron and
stone wine storage table topped with a matching tiered server
for entertaining. Behind it, the painted wall looks like an aged
stone wall.
Ewing introduced a crocodile-textured, tufted ottoman
in a bright red hue. It’s just one of many hides in the room
including a cowhide rug with cheetah- and zebra-print
accessories. Against the walls—with an ombre paint wash
fading up from a fiery red to a soft golden —the black and
white pops of color and purple accents add the whimsy the
homeowners sought for this space.

with drywall to get a contemporary look. That wall
then became the screen,” Sunday says. “Projectors were
installed in the ceiling and now the family can watch
a large-screen movie while enjoying a fire in their
fireplace.” In the same room is a television supported
entirely by a modern side-mount hinge, allowing the
large screen to swivel, like a door swing. This project
encompassed a tulip shaped sub-woofer that sits on a
bookshelf, instead of hidden away. Automated black-
out shades support the theater feeling with the touch
of a button, and strategically placed surround sound
completes this families’ viewing experience.
