Throughout 2013, the volunteers, members and staff of the BC Branch of The Kidney Foundation invested our energy and resources into solidifying our foundation. We put in place the building blocks needed to improve the lives of the one in 10 British Columbians affected by kidney disease. Through our collective efforts, we are becoming stronger together.

And we need to be stronger if we want to achieve our vision of improved lives for all people affected by kidney disease. The emotional and physical impact of this serious disease on patients, their families and caregivers is intense. However by funding innovative research, by providing education and support, by promoting access to high quality healthcare, and by increasing public awareness of the importance of kidney health and organ donation, we send a crucial message of hope to people who know adversity only too well.

We are proud of our collective achievements last year that saw more kidney patients supported with short term financial assistance, with coffee and comfort items in kidney clinics, with a home away from home in our Kidney Suites, and with the Living Organ Donor Expense Reimbursement Program (LODERP). We also screened more British Columbians who are at high risk of kidney disease than we did the year before in communities across our province. Our investments in people would not have happened without you. Whether as a member of a Chapter, a volunteer for our Kidney Walks or March Drive Campaign, or a supporter of our annual Shine a Light Gala, people like you made a difference in the lives of British Columbians affected by this costly chronic disease.

2013 was also a year of building partnerships which strengthened our kidney community network. For example, we partnered with the Canadian Society of Nephrology to host our first-ever kidney gala, with the BC Renal Agency to offer our first CKD Symposium for family doctors

EXECUTIVE MESSAGE / KIDNEY FOUNDATION BC BRANCH / 2013 / ANNUAL REPORT 3

MESSAGE FROM OUR VOLUNTEER BOARD PRESIDENT AND OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It’s our kidney community growing stronger together that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of people affected by kidney disease.

and healthcare professionals, and with the Canadian Diabetes Association to provide targeted screenings of British Columbians with diabetes during diabetes month.

At a time when we tend to think that technology is the fix for everything, we often forget how important caring as well as a personal connection or relationship is to people faced with integrating kidney disease into their lives. It’s our people who care that make the BC Branch unique. It’s our kidney community growing stronger together who will make a meaningful difference in the lives of people affected by kidney disease.

This year our Annual Report shares stories of just a few of our remarkable volunteers and donors. Their dedication and effort to coordinate events, to provide edu- cation and outreach in their communities, as well as their encouragement and sup-port of children and adults living with this serious, incurable disease is inspiring. Because of their efforts, and the efforts of our all our supporters and volunteers, British Columbians diagnosed with kidney disease are not alone.

Thank you for volunteering, for giving tangible support to people living with kidney disease, for raising funds or for donating a kidney. Thank you for joining us in our cause and helping build a stronger foundation for all kidney patients in British Columbia. ■

CHINESE RENAL ASSOCIATION:

SPEAKING THE LANGUAGE OF EARLY DETECTION AND KIDNEY HEALTH

Cathy Wong at a Targeted Screening event with Laurie Mark of the BC Branch.

The BC Branch of The Kidney Foundation of Canada is 7,000 plus volunteers strong. Each and every day these remarkable individuals help deliver the mission of the organization. They help support kidney patients and their families, build awareness and education around kidney health and organ donation and raise funds to help us deliver critical programs and services to the kidney community.

Below you will meet just a few of our volunteers, who tell us why supporting The Kidney Foundation is important to them.

BECOMING STRONGER TOGETHER:

THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS

Knowledge is definitely power when it comes to kidney disease, and the Chinese Renal Association (CRA) of BC places great emphasis on knowing the risk factors and the importance of early detection. “The Chinese community is at risk for kidney disease, but most people are not aware,” says CRA Liaison Representative Cathy Wong. “In fact sometimes newly diagnosed patients know nothing or very little about kidney health, so educating the community is a priority for us.” With over 100 members, the CRA is a chapter of The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC Branch.

As a kidney patient herself, Cathy joined the CRA in 2009 and has been volunteering since 2010. She wanted to share her own experience and reach out to the community to raise awareness of the importance of kidney health. Like Cathy, many of its members are kidney patients and understand the ups and downs that new patients face.

“We hold a lot of workshops and social events each year, but in terms of education and awareness, 2013 was a very fruitful year for us,” says Cathy. The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC Branch, conducts Targeted Screening Events to encourage early detection of chronic kidney disease among those at highest risk. “We held some workshops prior to these events and connected with people by sharing our personal stories, signed people up for screening, and translated and explained the consent forms and reviewing process.”

CRA volunteers also include social workers and supporters who provide all kinds of assistance, one on one peer and family support sessions and translation services for kidney patients. “We’ve always tried to do more patient services by holding information sessions in hospitals for kidney patients. In addition, we have monthly meetings in Vancouver and Richmond, speaking to patients about the importance of protecting the kidneys and about our own experiences around nutrition and dialysis.”

“We’ve achieved a lot but still have to work very hard to let people know about CRA and KFOC so that people know they have someone to talk to in addition to doctors,” adds Cathy. “It’s very important to us to support the community and let them know that kidney patients can have a good life too.” ■

BRINGING COMFORT TO KIDNEY PATIENTS—ONE CUP OF COFFEE AT A TIME

About 3,200 cookies and 250 lbs of coffee is what Lois Wilson, long time volunteer and Board member with The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC Branch, estimates she buys a year for the Abbotsford Community Dialysis Unit with funds from The BC Branch. Three times a week for the last 9 years, Lois, 74, has been serving coffee and cookies to kidney patients through the Coffee Cart program while they are having their dialysis treatments.

In addition to her coffee shifts, Lois, a former teacher, also loves to deliver education sessions on chronic kidney disease and is often seen providing information at numerous health fairs in and around the Fraser Valley.

Lois began volunteering with The Kidney Foundation when her husband was diagnosed with kidney disease. Her husband received a kidney from an anonymous donor in 2010 and, just last July, Lois donated her kidney to her husband’s sister.

“Our family has been wrestling with this disease for a long time which makes me so committed to the cause,” says Lois. “What I really love about visiting the dialysis unit is connecting with the patients, and I am so disappointed if I have to miss one of my shifts. I know how grueling dialysis can be from my husband’s experience, and I know the patients appreciate the distraction from their treatments through a coffee break.”

However, Lois is not alone in her volunteer shifts at the Unit. Each week she is joined by volunteers from the Abbotsford community including two sisters Jasleen Kaur Gill and Kamaldeep Kaur Gill. These two ladies have been volunteering with the BC Branch since before they were 16, and now at age 21 and 22 respectively, they have been with the Coffee Cart program for the last few years. For Jasleen and Kamaldeep their commitment to the cause also has a personal connection—their dad has kidney disease.

“With our dad being a renal patient we have been at the receiving end of the services provided by The Kidney Foundation. The volunteers who dedicated their time to helping patients inspired us to also get involved with the goal of providing necessary services to patients while educating the public about kidney disease. Volunteering for The Kidney Foundation has truly been an amazing experience as we meet new people and help out in any way that we can. Through our volunteer work we are able to give back to the community that has provided us with so much support.” ■

IT TAKES A COMMUNITYTO RAISE AWARENESS AND FUNDS FOR A CAUSE

When it comes to getting the word out about kidney health and the importance of organ donation, The Kidney Foundation’s volunteers in Kamloops have it down to a science. There’s a strong and committed contingent of men and women in the community who are dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of kidney disease and organ donation, and as a result raise much needed funds for the cause. Their efforts run all year long, beginning in March with Kidney Health Month and World Kidney Day when they coordinate an integrated health forum complete with dialysis machines, blood pressure clinics, interactive games, contests and a myriad of other activities that draw in local dignitaries, and the community at large. However, their efforts don’t stop here. These volunteers attend festivals, home shows, churches, health fairs, information booths and the list goes on. They give out information and pamphlets about kidney disease and recipes for kidney healthy diets, sell t-shirts and other specialty items, and fundraise for the Kidney Walk.

Aside from all the community events they attend, they work with the local media to help get our message out. In fact, one of the volunteers, Linda Bonner Brown, 67, has done so many media interviews she is known as the face of The Kidney Foundation in Kamloops.

Long-time volunteers Barb Caswell and Linda Bonner Brown raise funds and awareness for kidney patients in Kamloops.

“I first got involved back in 1994 when my husband, Doug, was diagnosed with kidney disease. We were living in a very small community at that time and were shocked to learn how little people knew about the disease. Together Doug and I made it our goal to help improve awareness about the seriousness of this disease and how to keep one’s kidneys healthy. History has proven that once people learn about the disease, the funds start to roll in. Since I’ve started, I have not only lost the love of my life—Doug—to this disease, but 63 dear friends as well. I do this for all of them, and all kidney patients.”

Barb Caswell, 71, has been volunteering and promoting the cause for over 25 years and is still going strong. A former LPN with Royal Inland Hospital she has been setting up information booths within the hospital and distributing Kidney Foundation materials within the community for as long as she can remember. Barb too lost her husband to the disease and being able to help educate others has become her life’s mission. “I first had to learn about kidney disease so I could help care for my husband but now I use that knowledge to help others in similar situations.”

Both ladies are humble about their tireless volunteer efforts on behalf of The Kidney Foundation, and they emphasize that it takes a team of individuals to make all the difference in Kamloops. ■

HELPING CHILDREN WITH KIDNEY DISEASE FEEL JUST LIKE A KID AGAIN

For children living with kidney disease, participating in a summer camp would be a challenge. But with the generosity of sponsors such as Variety – The Children’s Charity, children between the ages of 8 to 18 are able to attend a Kidney Camp for Kids in BC every summer at no cost.

“Variety actively seeks to build partnerships with organizations that provide programs and services for children who have special needs,” says Bernice Scholten, Executive Director of Variety – The Children’s Charity. “By supporting Kidney Camp, we are helping kids to lead happy and healthy lives.”

In 2013, 42 kids were able to attend a week long summer camp, where they spent time kayaking, horse riding, swimming, and canoeing.

“By providing funding for The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC Branch’s Kidney Camp, we can continue to help children across the province enjoy a life-enriching experience in a safe environment,” adds Bernice.

Thank you Variety for helping us to send children with kidney disease to camp every year where they can just be kids again. ■

EVERY DOLLAR COUNT$:EMPLOYEE GIVING MADE EASY

Bruce Grist, a Partner at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin, has been designating contributions from his paycheque to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC Branch for the past 15 years. He and his wife Laura wanted to support the charity for personal reasons and found that, in addition to Laura’s 20 years as a March Drive volunteer, employee payroll deduction through Bruce’s work was an easy and convenient way of giving back.

“Our son, Brendan—one of four children—was diagnosed with a kidney issue when he was born. We were concerned for his health and needed to do something. Supporting The Kidney Foundation of Canada helped us feel like we were making a difference, even if it was just in a small way. Fortunately our son, now 21, has been in good health all these years,” says Bruce.

Employee giving is one of the simplest ways to contribute, and an important way that The Kidney Foundation of Canada receives funding. When organizations hold their annual campaigns, such as the United Way campaign, individuals can designate their support to The Kidney Foundation and the amount they want to donate per pay. The rest of the details are handled by one’s employer and the contributions are spread out in small amounts throughout the year.

Even a small payroll deduction can add up to a significant difference to programs and services for kidney patients, and you receive a charitable tax receipt at the end of the year. “All those years ago, my wife Laura and I decided that The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC Branch was a worthy organization to donate to,” says Bruce, “and we continue to do so today.” ■ Laura and Bruce Grist meet with

Karen Koch of the BC Branch.

THE KIDNEY FOUNDATION OF CANADA, BC BRANCH AND VANCOUVER FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES

ENJOY A LIFE-SAVING PARTNERSHIP

It’s a partnership that is truly a win-win-win. The Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services receives 100 plus donated vehicles annually from The Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Car Program, a signature revenue campaign that allows individuals or businesses with old or unwanted vehicles to donate them to the charity and in return receive a free tow and a valuable tax receipt. These vehicles help fire fighters hone and maintain their lifesaving skills.

Chuck Stanford, Assistant Chief, Training & Staff Development with Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services explains, “The vehicles The Kidney Foundation provides are invaluable in the training of our members in auto extrication techniques. This training is vital at motor vehicle incidents, where we are able to quickly and efficiently secure and stabilize emergency scenes and gain access to injured patients.”

“The Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services is proud to be partnered with The BC Branch of The Kidney Foundation of Canada,” continues Assistant Chief Stanford. “We thank The Kidney Foundation for their continued support and assistance in keeping The Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services members ready to respond!”

Once these unwanted vehicles have served their purpose with the fire fighters, they are donated back to the Kidney Car program, and recycled once again for funds that benefit kidney patients and help preserve the environment. Recycle your vehicle. Recycle for life. ■ Vehicle extraction demonstration.

INAUGURAL

“SHINE A LIGHT KIDNEY GALA” EXCEEDS ALL EXPECTATIONS

Members of BC’s business, medical and philanthropic communities filled Van Dusen Gardens on March 3, 2013 for the first-ever kidney gala co-hosted by The Kidney Foundation, BC Branch and The Canadian Society of Nephrology. Built around the theme of People and Possibilities, the “Shine a Light Kidney Gala” made its intent clear: to shine a light on this serious disease and the people it affects. And, of course, to raise some funds at the same time. On all counts, the event exceeded expectations.

MC Mi-Jung Lee from CTV set the stage for the elegant evening, while guests sampled delicious wines and hors d’oeuvres, enjoyed live musical entertainment and bid generously on a wide selection of fantastic silent and live auction items. Members of the audience were also treated to inspiring stories from kidney patients and given a birds eye view into what life is like when you have kidney disease, both the triumphs and the challenges.

Thanks to the tremendous support from sponsors, patrons, guests, and volunteers the Gala raised over $120,000 to support people living with kidney disease and to help further kidney research.

Title sponsor Takeda representative Glynis Webster commented, “We were proud to support and be part of the Shine a Light Kidney Gala. It is important for Takeda to be part of the community and support events that promote the health and well being of British Columbians. The event was a very lovely evening with an opportunity to interact with health care professionals, Kidney Foundation staff, patients and industry involved in kidney care in BC. It was great to see the level of interaction and caring amongst all the groups and the commitment to raising funds.”

A special mention to Dr. Adeera Levin for her visionary role behind the Gala. This Gala would not have happened without Dr. Levin’s dedication and tireless efforts towards the cause. ■
