Here is a KMA family we're happy to haveback with us, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Heuer andtheir three fine children, Jeffery, 7; Cynthia,4 in December: and Tommy, 11. Left toright - Jeffrey is in 2nd grade at CentralSchool which is right next door to theirhome. Jeffrey is mechanically inclined andlikes to see what makes things "tick",especially old alarm clocks, which are liableto go off at any time around the Heuerhousehold. He tinkered with a couple ofold broken down clocks at his grandmothersand they've been running ever since, sohe must have some idea of what he's doing.Mike returned to KMA the 1st of August,was previously with the station a numberof years as night time D.J. on "Club 960",then on "Mike's Matinee" for several years.He's back again with the same time, 4:00p.m. every weekday afternoon. Then Satur-day nights from 7:00 till Midnight, he has

"KMA Bandstand-Country Style". He isfast becoming the Midwest's impressarioof Country/Western music. Betty, the Mrs.,looks upon her family as her main interest,however, as a Licensed Practical Nurse shehelps out at the Hand Community Hospitalseveral nights a week. Cynthia has a timeof it watching the children play duringrecess at school next door and knowing shehas to stay home. The first few weeks ofschool, the teachers kept finding heramong their charges and having to sendher home. She's mother's little helper,wipes dishes, helps mother vacuum. Tommyis in 6th grade. He likes farming and isinterested in any kind of animal with fourlegs, including dinosaurs. He is an avidreader. He spent the last two summers athis grandparent's farm in Minnesota. Helearned to drive the tractors and workedhard all summer.

Old man winter arrived in KMA landthe evening of November 2. Temperaturesdropped to 22° at Shenandoah, but theywere even colder in parts of the area,particularly in Nebraska. For the most partwe have had a comparatively mild fall, infact, we still had a few of the hardierflowers in bloom outdoors. However, theyare gone now and we will have to waituntil spring before we will have moreflowers out of doors.
This leads to the matter of the approach-ing winter. We have reached the time ofthe year when some weather observers areprognosticating our winter by watchingcertain signs. These vary from the activityof the squirrels, the looseness of the cornhusks to the width of the band on thewoolly caterpillar (the theory being, thewider the band the milder the winter).Most climatologists, the scientists who dealin weather and climatic phenomena, don'tput much faith in weather signs, but manypeople do. If you follow any certain signs-what do your signs indicate regarding ourapproaching winter?
I had hoped to show you a picture ofthe KMA juniors working at the annualhigh school junior class chili supper. How-ever, they were so involved it was impos-sible for Guide photographer Duane Modrowto get them all together. The chili supperis sponsored by the junior class and thisyear they served over 1,300 people. Ap-proximately 450 pounds of onions and 450pounds of hamburger were used-so youcan readily see the entire junior class wasextremely busy. Incidentally, the KMAjuniors are Carol Burrichter, Sharon Roul-stone, Susan Childs, and Annette May.
Do you like popcorn? Do you question ifKMA listeners like popcorn ? We were look-ing for some popcorn recipes and asked ourlisteners to send us their favorite recipefor fixing popcorn. The response was ter-rific. nuggets, popcorn crunch, marshmallowpopcorn, and several other uses for pop-corn. We are going to try to pick out thefinest of the recipes and make up a nicerecipe book. It will probably take us a whileto test the hundreds of recipes that camein, but in due time we will have the jobcompleted.
Speaking of popcorn, here is a poementitled "The Popcorn Kan" sent in byMiss Ava Nelson of Exira, Iowa.

That last line regarding butter makes methink of our boy Eddie. He goes to theshow occasionally on Saturday afternoonand he always likes to have a sack ofpopcorn with butter on it. Something elseseveral of the Shenandoah boys and girlsbuy at the show is a big sour dill pickle.Can you imagine buttered popcorn and dillpickles being an enjoyable combination?I'll take the popcorn.
No doubt many of you are makingplans for Thanksgiving, the first of ourbig holidays. Thanksgiving isn't as big aholiday as Christmas or New Years, but itis a day families try to be together andcelebrate the occasion. I hope most of yourfamily is able to be with you this Thanks-giving.

The picture this month is taken in ourden-sometimes called the music room.I will explain why later. Jenny is veryproud of her big Monstera plant and goesover the leaves every few days with asoft cloth to make sure that no dust hasa chance to settle on them. The Monsterasare closely related to the Philodendronsand make excellent house plants because,being tropical plants, they rather like thewarm temperatures most of us have in ourhouses in the winter time, and lack of hu-midity in the air doesn't seem to botherthem. The only thing they ask is plentyof light and plenty of moisture and to havetheir leaves wipped off occasionally to keepdust from clogging up the pores.
The den is in the southeast corner of thehouse and that is a south window behindthe drapes in the picture. Normally thedrapes are kept open to let in as much lightas possible, but in order to make a goodbackground for the picture, Jenny closedthem.
I mentioned we sometimes called this themusic room. Right behind Jenny's chairyou can see part of our Hi-Fi set-up. Theblack box on top of the cabinet is an FM

receiver which I made several years ago ata time when it was not possible to buy anFM receiver on the market. If you wantedone, you had to make it yourself. Of course,now they are readily available at reasonableprices. The Hi-Fi set is also a home-madejob-made up about 10 years ago whenthey too, were unavailable on the market.You could purchase all the necessary com-ponent parts but you had to build your owncabinets to contain them. The cabinet yousee there, holds the record changer, theequalizer, the pre-amplifer, and the ampli-fier. The oblong black space on the frontof the cabinet is where most of the controlsare located. The switches just to the rightof the black oblong control remote speakersin various parts of the house. I did all thenecessary wiring for these remote speakerswhile the house was being built, and thereare speaker out -lets in every room of thehouse, including one in the recreation roomin the basement, one in the laundry room,and one in my workshop. All Jenny has todo is to put on a stack of records, throwthe appropriate switch, and listen to musicwhile she is doing her house work.
Right over Jenny's head you will seesomething else home made-those twopictures on the wall. Remember one timeabout a year ago, I showed you a picturetaken in the recreation room of someof the paintings Jenny and I had done dur-ing the winter months for the lack of any-thing else to do ? With pheasant season upon us here is aclever adaptation of pheasant feathersFlorence Falk obtained at the second an-nual Kraft Karnival at Clarinda, Iowa lastmonth. As you know, pheasant feathersare beautiful and so often are Just thrownaway or kept around for a while, thenthrown away. It wouldn't be difficult toask some hunter to save them for you.Take a piece of veneered plywood, 1/4 inchis heavy enough, cut so it will mount thelong tail feathers. Glue on a spray of thecolorful small feathers with a small seashell, acorn, locust or hedge tree thorn.or any other fall decorations. Betty Raneyof Macedonia, Iowa made these. It mightbe interesting to work in some of the color-ful feathers from ducks, too. The plaquesshould be in catching pairs for wall mount-ing. The veneer used on these looked likePhilippine mohogany, however, any veneerto suit your decor may be used.
Announcer Mike Heuer hasfound it isn't easy playingthe part of a villian in anold Gay Nineties Melodrama.In the play "Dirty Work atthe Crossroads" presented bythe Southwest Iowa TheaterGroup, Mike got thrown tothe ground as shown in thepicture at right, kicked twice,had three struggles with theheroine, and finally got runover by a train! Not onlythat, he had to carry theheroine, Mrs. Bill Mickle, pic-tured at left, from one sideof the stage to the otherwhile gasping for breath.Mike's elbows were sore, hewas exhausted at the end ofevery rehearsal and fought aserious bout with laryngitis.

KMA In Historical Documentary on Tidy HousePictured at right, CarlStrobe, Art Director, and BobFuller, photographer of thePillsbury Company of Min-neapolis were in Shenandoahlast month preparing anhistorical documentary colorfilm on the Tidy House Prod-ucts Company which is nowa division of Pillsbury. Sinceyou might say Tidy Rouse"got its start" on KMA, theywanted a shot of a KMAmicrophone with an old pieceof radio copy from the earlydays. We were able to locatejust what they wanted.

Despite popular misconception, the lifeof a radio or TV personality is not allroses and honey. Nor is it all turkey andthe fixin's . . . even on Thanksgiving. Takefor example, when Mr. and Mrs. John Q.Public are home enjoying their big holidaydinner, KMA announcers will be broad-casting in the old "show must go on"tradition. Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat,nor white of meat stays these announcersfrom the best completion of their appointedshows. But most of them will enjoy dinner,at some time during the day.
A plate will be added to the Thanks-giving dinner table at the home of EngineerDon Burrichter for his son Ed who will behome for the holidays from Kansas Uni-versity at Lawrence, where he is studyingpharmacy.
The family of newscaster Ralph Childs,feel they have something to be especiallythankful for this Thanksgiving . . . thankfulthat the oldest son Steve, age 21, who was

seriously injured in a car accident, Oct.22nd, is improving and able to be homefrom the hospital. The accident occurredwhen a tire blew out, causing him to losecontrol. The auto skidded off the road, andoverturned at least three times, throwinghim out of the car. Steve suffered a dis-located left knee, a dislocated rightshoulder, a broken left collar bone, andwas torn under the arm. A friend JayleeCroy in the car with him, was also thrownout and suffered a back injury. The boyswere taken to the HAND HOSPITAL fortreatment. Jaylee, riding with Steve, washome on furlough from the navy. Stevewas thankful he escaped alive, even thoughhis car was totally demolished. He hadonly one more payment to make on thecar, until he would have completely ownedit. The wrecked car landed on its top in awater -filled ditch.
Christmas festivities in Shenandoah willbe highlighted by the holiday wedding ofMiss Betty Jane Rankin, daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Jesse David Rankin, Jr., toMichael Gerald Sherman, son of Mr. andMrs. Gerald W. Sherman of 319 CentralAvenue, Wilmette, Ill. The large weddingwill take place at the CongregationalChurch in Shenandoah, December 29. Thebeautiful bride-to-be pictured on this page,is the granddaughter of Mrs. Earl May,and niece of Edward May.
Both Betty Jane and Michael attended theUniversity of Arizona, where Mr. Shermanwas a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.Betty Jane's engagement was announcedOctober 7th, by a miniature newspaper"Nuptial News" presented to the guestsat a luncheon given by her mother at theDelmonico Hotel. Of the twenty guests at-tending the luncheon, seven were presentwho had been guests at the announcementparty of Betty Jane's mother in 1939. Thosewho had the honor of attending both an-nouncements were Mrs. Earl May, Mrs.J. D. Rankin Sr. of Tarkio, Mrs. R. W.Lawson of Wilmette, Ill., Mrs. D. J. Watsonof Tarkio, Mrs. Carl Wolford, Mrs. IvanWilson, and Mrs. Wayne McMannama, ofShenandoah. A number of showers andcourtesies are being extended in honor ofthe bridal couple.

going squirrel hunting. He came homewith a squirrel, skinned it, cut it up, thenhis wife Pat helped him fry it! First theybrowned it good, then put the lid on theskillet and steamed it half an hour. Youguessed it! She loved it. Said it was asgood as chicken. Now, she won't objectwhen Tom takes his gun and heads out forthe woods squirrel hunting.
Going to an out-of-town football gameon the high school student bus can be areal experience. When disembarking fromthe bus, Annette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.Edward May lost a shoe in a mud puddleand had to go barefoot the rest of theevening. By the time she arrived home,she really had a bad case of "cold feet".
Three -hundred and thirty-five studentsattended the first Record Hop mc'd by an-nouncer JOHN RUSSELL of KMA at theClarinda Cardinal Canteen, following thefootball game between Clarinda and Shen-andoah, Oct. 19th. John made one discoveryat the dance. The boys seem to prefer slowdreamy numbers . . . the girls like the fastones! John also had the thrill of interview-ing two well-known band leaders in October. . . Harry James who was playing in Mary-ville, Missouri, for the Encore Club dance,and Stan Kenton, playing at the FrogHop Ballroom in St. Joseph, Missouri. Hopeyou enjoyed these interviews broadcast onKMA.
Anyone taking a peek into Guide EditorDuane Modraw's garage, might think hewas a wealthy sportsman because insidethey would see a beautiful new 17 -footcruiser and a Piper airplane. But Duaneis only storing them for the owners. Evenwith these two big items in the storage, hestill has plenty of room to spare, so youmay know he has a BIG garage.
The young man at thepiano, Randy, son of FarmService Director Jack Gow-ing, is pretty disgusted. Al-ready his 4 year old sisterJulie Dawn has interruptedhis music practice with ablast from her Hallowe'enhorn, and he figures she isabout to let go with anotherloud toot. Impish Julie thinksit is fun, but Randy is prettyserious about learning toplay the piano, and he isglaring at her. Maybe it isbecause the beautiful spinetpiano is brand new in thehome, and Randy is juststarting to take music les-sons. His dad is not sureRandy should be starting topick out tunes of his own sosoon, but Randy is doing justthat and seems to be gettingalong fine. Of course, hismother is enjoying the new

piano very much, too. Music will be animportant part in the home life of theGowings from now on.
David, son of Newscaster Ralph Childs,who is taking his first year at University ofIowa, pledged Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
Even though Jerry Waltrip, KMA nightannouncer, had spent two years in servicefrom 1956 to 1958, he thought he had toreturn when he received notice to reportto the Army Medical Corp at Fort Polk,La. Oct. 24th. Since he was no longer aresident of Louisiana, and not under theirjurisdiction, his orders were changed andhe finally was notified he did not have toenter the service now. So you will con-tinue to hear Jerry's fine voice and finemusic during the evening hours.
Learning to cook and look after a house-hold has far more facets that bride-to-beBetty Jane Rankin ever realized. Whilelooking after the Edward May familyrecently while Mrs. May was out-of-town,Betty tried to please by cooking theirfavorite dishes and driving her cousinsAnnette and Karen on errands and to schoolaffairs. After cooking Karen's favorite dish,"macaroni and cheese," she said she hadn'trealized it took so many pots and pans!Annette chose "wild rice" when asked whatshe wanted for lunch. Betty Jane cookedit . . . as she did a big breakfast of baconand eggs. When asked by her Uncle Edhow she liked keeping house, Betty Janeconfided: "I've already cut down on thesize family I want .. . not over one or two!"It didn't take her long to find out keepinghouse is a full-time job!

A Letter From The Farmer's WifeAs I write this, we are having one of
the most beautiful of fall days. The treeshave been gorgeous in a riot of color. Fol-lowing a summer of ample rainfall, whichgave us much variety of greenery, this isa delightful way to draw us close to theglorious out-of-doors this season.
Since last writing you, life on the farmhas had considerable change. The farmerhas been in and out of the hospital havinghad surgery, from which he is makingspeedy recovery. Karenann is establishedin college and Bruce busy with Junior yearin high school. The crops have matured andnow harvesting is keeping everyone busy.
The farmer is busy harvesting the "beancrop". Each day finds many vehicles ofall sizes and descriptions (wagons, tractors,pickups, etc.) going by to the local storagefacilities. The corn, standing so tall andstraight in the field, will be the next har-vest in line. Lunches, meals, and errandsfall to the lot of the farm housewife thesebusy days. But, we all love every bit ofthis life.
Karenann is now a freshman at North-west Missouri State College at Maryville,a resident of Perrin Hall for Women. Sheis planning to major in Physical Educationand needless to say has a very busyschedule. In high school it seemed therewas an end to study time but in collegethis goes on and on. Largely a matter oftime organization. She is a member of theconcert band. She and her roommate, NancyBruggeman of Manila, both play the clari-net. In fact, they have many interests incommon and are companionable roommates,although Nancy is majoring in a differentfield. The girls have both been able tospend several weekends at home so farthis fall. As the weather changes andwinter closes in, more and more mail findsits way to and from home.
In October, it was my privilege to at-tend the Area Conference of Women inRadio and Television. This was held atWichita, Kansas and on a weekend ofsuch nice fall weather. By taking the bus,I really could see some of the Kansasscenery as we went buzzing along thefabulous Kansas turnpike. From KansasCity we traveled through Emporia-ratherwe stopped there for a half hour lunchbreak and it was so nice to walk outsideand look for miles without seeing a hill orslight elevation except to the horizon. Thetraditional Kansas wind was blowing whichset me to reminiscing of the days years agoMother and I spent in McPherson, Kansas.(In fact I went to school there the firstpart of my fifth grade year. I well re-member visiting with relatives out on theKansas prairie and of the wind that neverquieted, the tumbleweeds, the dust, the

sandy soil, the rain that was so muchneeded and how the first drops bounced inthe reddish dust.) We boarded our bus andwent on towards Wichita, going throughthat most interesting part of El Doradoand the oil pumps, surprising to me themoving equipment that is certainly dif-ferent than the pictured derricks. Naturecompensates in many ways and here wasone-golden oil coming from a land seeming-ly barren almost of vegetation. Miles laterwe found fields near the highway withhuge herds of cattle, roaming these Kansasplains. Then on to the busy city of Wichita,a city so clean it reminded me of Rotter-dam in Holland with its bustling "new"activity. We had such a fine convention;this one had such informative materialthat helped everyone-fine explanations ofnew rules, presentation of ideas on notonly local but also area and national level.This was a time of meeting and exchang-ing ideas with others in the radio andtelevision work. This is an interesting workand one that has much activity behindscenes to get broadcasts set up as well ason the air. There was throughout the three-day schedule just about twenty minutestime for shopping so you know this was a"working" convention. I returned by busafter dark but enjoyed the beauty of lightsas we went through each area. Particularlythe panoramic City, Mis-souri by night as you cross over fromKansas. The air field with its kaleidoscopeof varied colors at night each with a mean-ing to the men of the air. Changed bussesand then on to Maryville where I drove ourcar home, coming almost too close forcomfort upon the armed robbery at Braddy-

FROZEN HOLIDAY SALAD
15 Marshmallows cut in quarters1 small bottle red maraschino cher-
ries1 small bottle green maraschino cher-
ries1 9 oz. can of crushed Pineapple1 3 oz. Pkg. Philadelphia cream
cheese2 Pints cream, whipped2 T. salad dressing
Cut marshmallows, red and green cherriesin quarters. Drain juice from pineapple, alsocherries, mix cheese and dressing untilsmooth. Add pineapple, cherries and marsh-mallows together. Fold in whipped cream,pour in pan and freeze. Cut in slices andserve on lettuce leaves and top with saladdressing. Sprinkle a little paprika on saladdressing.

QUICK COFFEE RINGc. butter
% c. sugar% c. milk3 c. sifted all-purpose flour
21/2 t. baking powderpinch of salt
72 c. raisinsc. mixed candied fruit
1 egg yolk% c. chopped, blanched almonds
Sugar for toppingMix the first eight ingredients, blending
well. Knead five or six times on a lightlyfloured board. Form into two round loaves,place on greased cooky sheet. Brush topwith yolk of egg, slightly beaten andsprinkle with sugar, and chopped almonds.Bake in 350' oven for 15 to 20 minutes oruntil done. If you want to make a tradition-al ring rather than the loaves, just work0 in a bit more flour so that dough will bea bit easier to handle. To make ring, rolldough with your hands into a rope andjoin the two ends together to form acircle. Then brush with egg and sprinklewith sugar and almonds.

FESTIVE SWEET POTATOES4 or 5 medium baked sweet potatoes
1/2 e. raisins1/2 c. brown sugar3 T. butter
1/2 t. salt1/2 t- vanilla% c. pecan nut meats1/2 c. cream or rich milk
Method:(1.) Mash sweet potatoes, combine withbrown sugar, butter and cream.(2.) Plump the raisins by letting them setin hot water for a while and drain.(3.) Add vanilla, salt, raisins, and choppedpecans. Mix well.(4.) Put in 6x10x2 inch glass baking dish.(5.) Garnish with 6 marshmallows.(6.) Heat in 300° oven; 25 minutes or untilmarshmallows are browned.
This serves 6 people. For special dinnersput sweet potato filling in large orange rindhalves, decorate with a marshmallow andwhen baked place around the chicken, tur-key, or ham on the meat platter.

1% c. sugar1/2 t. cinnamon
t. nutmeg% t. ginger% t. salt1 t. vanilla1 e. heavy cream, whipped1 pint vanilla ice cream, softened1 8" or 9" baked pie shell
Combine pumpkin, sugar, spices, salt, andvanilla: fold in whipped cream and spreadice cream in baked shell then spoon onpumpkin filling. Freeze pie until firm.When ready to serve may decorate witha bit more whipped cream and pecansif desired. Easy, ready ahead of time; nofail pie. Set out 15 minutes for easy cutting.

GERMAN APPLE STRUDEL
DOUGH
2 c. sifted flour2 eggs1 T. soft shortening
dash salt1/2 c. water3 T. butter
Mix flour with eggs, shortening, saltand water. Knead until firm. Let it stand30 min. Roll out thinly and brush withmelted butter.

Peel apples and slice very thin. Brownthe crumbs in butter, cool and sprinkleover the dough. Drop the raisins over thecrumbs. Cover with sliced apples, spread-ing evenly. Add the sugar and cinnamon.Roll up and place on a greased bakingsheet. Brush with an egg or egg yolk orbutter and bake in hot oven 30 min.Sprinkle with sugar and serve either hotor cold.

TWIN ANGEL FOOD CAKE PIES
1 ten -inch angel food cake1 envelope unflavored gelatin
1/2 c. cold water4 t. lemon juice2 pkgs. thawed frozen berries
1/2 t. salt2 egg whites1 c. heavy cream whipped
1/2 c. heavy cream whipped1 banana sliced and dipped in lemon
juice1 c. coconut
Cut the cake into 2 even layers, hollowout both to a 1 -inch shell. Fill the tubehole of both with cake bits. Stir gelatinand water over hot water until dissolved,add lemon juice and add to the fruit. Letthis congeal to soft jelly stage; add thesalt to the egg whites, beat until verystiff and fold into first mixture; fold inthe 1 c. cream whipped. Refrigerate a fewminutes then heap into the shells. Decoratewith 1/2 c. cream whipped, arrange bananason top and sprinkle coconut over. Makethis several hours ahead or let refrigerateover night. Makes two 10 -inch pies.

COCONUT CRUST PIE2 T. soft butter1 pkg. flake coconut
Spread butter evenly in pie pan, sprinklecoconut into pan and pat evenly into butter.Bake in 350° oven 10 to 12 minutes untilgolden brown. Fill with a ready -mix piefilling or with ice cream.

UNBAKED THREE LAYER COOKIES
PART 1A-% c. butter
1/4 c. sugar1/2 c. cocoa1 t. vanilla
B- 1 egg slightly beatenC- 2 c. graham cracker crumbs
1 c. flake coconut1/2 c. chopped pecans
Put "A" in top of double boiler; cookand stir until blended, add "B" and cookand stir just 5 min. Add "C" and removefrom heat immediately and mix well. Pressthis into bottom of 8 by 11 by 2 inch pan.Let cool.
PART 2D-1/2 c. butterE- 3 T. milk
2 t. vanilla instant puddingF- 2 c. powdered sugar
Cream "D" until fluffy. Combine "E" andadd to "D" and mix well. Add "F" gradu-ally and beat smooth. Spread this overfirst layer. Let stand until firm.PART 3
1 pkg. (6 -oz.) chocolate bits11/2 T. soft butterMelt together and spread over cookies.
If it seems too thick, thin it with cream.* * *

Pastry for 2 crust piePlace bottom pastry in pie pan. Combine
"A" and spread over bottom crust. Put"B" in saucepan and simmer 5 min. Sprinklewith "C", then "D". Adjust slashed uppercrust, trim and seal edges. Bake 10 min. at425° then turn oven to 350° and bake 25min. more. Serves 6.

"My Best" Recipe Selections for NovemberANYTIME IS TURKEY TIME! No matterthe season, occasion, or time of year, forspecial days or for every day, there's aturkey dish for your menu.
TURKEY LOAF
2 qts. cubed turkey1/2 c. diced turkey giblets2 c. diced celery
% c. diced green pepper3 T. diced pimiento6 T. chopped onion6 T. turkey fat4 qts. bread cubes3 c. bread crumbs1 T. salt1 t. pepper-black1 T. worchester sauce
11/2 qts. turkey broth6-7 eggsDice turkey into 1 -inch pieces, chop
giblets, saute celery, green pepper, pimiento,and onion in fat. Combine turkey giblets,sauted vegetables, bread cubes, breadcrumbs and seasonings. Beat eggs slightly,add broth to eggs, add to dry ingredients.Combine lightly; Add more seasoning ifnecessary. Pour into well -greased loaf pan.Place pans in shallow pan of warm water.Bake 325° for 45-60 minutes or until done.Cut into slices. Serve with mushroom sauce.Makes approximately 24 servings.

SCALLOPED TURKEY
6 c. diced celery3 c. water
1% c. butter or margarine, melted2% qts. (15) 1/2 in. bread cubes toasted
3 qts. celery water and milk11/2 c. butter or margarine11/2 c. flour
3 t. salt% t. poultry seasonings1/2 t. pepper6 c. diced cooked turkey
Cook celery in water until just tender.Drain water off celery and save. Pour 11/2c. melted butter over toast cubes. Combinecelery water with enough to make 3 qts.Melt remaining butter in saucepan. Blendin flour and cook over low heat untilbubbly. Add liquid all at once and cook,stirring constantly, until thick and smooth.Add seasonings. Arrange turkey and celeryin a layer over half the cubes in a 6 qt.baking pan. Pour sauce over top of turkey.Top with remaining bread cubes and pressdown. Bake 350° for 20 - 25 minutes oruntil heated through. Makes approximately24 servings.

salad greensLightly mix together turkey, celery and
olives. Blend together turkey jelly, mayon-naise and salt. Combine the two mixtures.Serve on bed of crisp salad greens. Makesapproximately 24 servings.

wet the string first. The string will shrinkas it dries!
Are annoying white spots caused bycarelessly placed glasses marking yourmahogany furniture? Make them vanishwith a thin layer of vaseline petroleumjelly.
If a picture or mirror obstinately hangscrookedly, paste some coarse sandpaperto the bottom edge of the frame, roughside facing the wall.
You needn't call a plumber when thekitchen sink is stopped up. Probably it'sdue to grease. Pour a cupful of table saltand one of baking soda down the drain,followed by a pot of boiling water. You'llfind the grease will dissolve almost atonce.
Fruits and tea stains can be removedfrom linen by covering the spot with vasel-ine petroleum jelly. Allow it to remainfor several hours, then wash in warm,soapy water.
To remove dog and cat hairs from up-holstery, your guests will appreciate yourgently patting its surfaces with a damppiece of sandpaper.

these paintings hanging on the walls inthe den in addition to the ones you saw inthe basement. We haven't decided yetwhether we will continue with our paintingthis winter or take up something else for ahobby to occupy our time on those eveningswhen the television programs are all poorand not worth watching or listening to.
We didn't do much new planting of Dutchbulbs this fall as we planted quite a lot ofthem last fall, and they will be perfectlygood for another year or two. However, wedid plant a couple of the Giant Alliums anda few more Lily bulbs, including both Ma-donnas (which are up nicely), and a fewmore Regals. We can't do too much plant-ing unless we buy some more ground aswhat we have is getting a little crowdednow. We are going to somehow find somespace next spring for some of the newroses.
There is nothing new or exciting to re-port about any of the Field tribe, exceptthat our daughter Zo, is at Rochester rightnow, going through the Mayo Clinic to seeif she needs any further work done on herheart. Will give you a full report on thatnext month.

ever had the exciting experience of hear-ing a broadcaster tell about the meander-ing of an "unwelcome visitor", a big oldskunk who suddenly made his appearanceright during the broadcast. Florence'smicrophone, located on a little table in frontof her dining room window, afforded hera full view of the "goings on" down in thefarm barnyard. You can imagine how hard
it was for her to keep her mind on thebroadcast as she noticed Mr. Skunkwander out of the barn, around the yardand head for the corn crib. All the time,as she gave his whereabouts, she wasworrying for fear their new little puppyTippy, might appear and get involved in afight, not knowing this wild little beastwas something to leave alone. Finally,Byron hove into sight with the dog! It wasmore than she could stand . . . she excusedherself from the microphone, dashed tothe porch and warned Byron that a skunkhad just gone into the barn and to beware.He quickly tied up the dog, and started asearch, but Mr. Skunk was no where tobe found. Yes, this was one broadcastthat had all the thrills of the old timemovie serials, where they end up by say-ing: "And listen in tomorrow to see whathappened to Byron and the skunk."
Homemaker Bernice Currier wasn't outHallowe'en night with the "tricks ortreaters". Nevertheless she had rather arestless night and was good and soundasleep when it came time to check herline with the engineer around 7:30 A.M.Finally the telephone ring roused her andshe realized she had overslept. Yes, herTWO alarm clocks had gone off and rundown, but they didn't awaken her. Shewould probably have slept clear up until airtime, if Announcer Merl Douglas had notbeen on the job checking to see that theline was in readiness for the broadcast.
High school honors have come to DianeRankin and Annette May. Diane, daughterof Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Rankin was a memberof a high school quartet chosen to attendthe All State Chorus to be held in DesMoines, November 24th. Annette, daughterof Mr. and Mrs. Edward May, has beenselected the Student Director of the JuniorClass play which will be presented thismonth.
The fellow on the left isone many of you may recallfrom bygone days when manylive entertainers were onKMA. It's none other thanCurly Dale. Curly might bemore readily identified if hehad a guitar or banjo in hishands. Curly dropped in tosay "hello" while hi townlooking after some property.Curly operates a truck stopand restaurant near Ankeny,just north of Des Moines.Here he visits with a longtime buddy and fellow enter-tainer, Merl Douglas. It wassure good to see ol' Curlyagain. He's every bit as fitas he looks.

High atop a colorful assortment of squash and ornamental gourds, Little EddieMay looks like part of the rhythm section of a South American orchestra as heshakes two ornamental gourds. On each side of Eddie are pumpkins. On firstrow below (1 to r) Squash - buttercup, sugar pie, acorn or table queen, hybridR, summer crook -neck, Chicago warted hubbard, golden acorn and king of themammoth; remainder are duplicates. Center row, center only, two big caserta,butternut, and cushaw (center). Those surrounding and all of bottom row areornamental gourds. Bottom center is black zucchini squash. One little packetof ornamental squash seed from May Seed Co. grew all the ornamentals, plusabout another bushel we didn't have room for. They are brilliant greens, *ranges,yellows, and whites. Wonderful for decorations.
