The 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Monicas Parish September 22, 2013

THE JOY OF KNOWING GOD IN JESUS:

THE CHURCH AND THE NEW EVANGELIZATION

Last spring, at a joint meeting of the pastoral team, wardens, pastoral council, and liturgy committee, w

shared a meal, prayed together, and watched a video of Pope Francis homily: Joy: A Sign of Christia

Freedom. This became a springboard for sharing on what brings us joy in our faith, and what empowe

us in turn to share this joy with others. Indeed, joy is at the heart of the new evangelization of which h

have been hearing since Pope John Paul II invited us, on the threshold of the third Millennium, to find ne

and fresh ways of presenting the Gospel.

More recently, with the election of Pope Francis, we have been blessed with an outstanding and inspirin

apostle of the new evangelization. Taking up the challenge of his Pentecost Vigil homily to the members

lay movements in the Church, we at St. Monicas are embarking on a three-year journey in which we w

focus successively on the central importance of personal encounter with God in the person ofJesus, o

deepening our relationship with Jesus through prayerand sacramental living, so that we can bear mo

effective and credible witness to our faith in the world, sharing in the mission of his Church. JesuPrayer, Witness quite the program!!

To help launch this process, we are indeed blessed to receive this weekend Fr. Guylain Prince. Fr. Guyla

and I studied together at St. Pauls University in Ottawa, where he received a Masters in Biblical Studies

Since entering the Franciscans in 1994, he has combined his deep love and knowledge of the Scripture

with a dynamic preaching ministry, in which he uses music as an instrument for evangelization. (You ca

visit his website, www.maisonintercd.com, to see him in action with the Gospel choirs he leads in Joliet

and Trois-Rivieres!) Inspired by the Quebec Bishops documentAnnoncer l'vangile dans la culture d

Qubec actuel, Fr. Guylain will help us see that in spite of the many difficulties we encounter in proposin

faith in Jesus Christ in our secular (and often anti-religious) culture, we are being called to name anreclaim our faith in Christ, and thereby become more lively, loving, and credible witnesses to th

transforming power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Welcome, Father Guylain!!
