World Treasures fromThe 50 Year Collection of Joe Candioto

Friday, July 8 10:30am Central Time

For more than two decades, Joseph’s Jewelry in the Georgian Village Shops was one of Kansas City’s best kept secrets among lovers of fine jewelry. With his own per-sonal sense of style and connoisseurship, Joe Candioto quietly became something of a “jeweler to the stars” known for big diamonds and bold designs offered without the trappings of a flashy retail presence. His clientele list could have been taken from the pages of Who’s Who in Kansas City. Local politicians, celebrities, philanthropists and even a few not-so-local television stars started out as a customer and then became a close personal friend who shared Joe’s passion for fine jewelry and fabulous antiques. The remainder of that jewelry and all of those fabulous antiques must now be sold to the highest bidder. Joe’s favorite pieces gathered over half a century of buying trips to New York and forays into Estates around the Mid-west will be sold by Joe’s heirs and The Joseph Earl Candioto trust. It does not appear that Joe ever passed the opportunity to buy anything in the French Egyptian Revival style ‘retour d’Egypte’ and he did manage to gather his share of all things French besides. He liked Napoleonic objects, Sevres porcelain, Marble Sculp-ture and Fine Bronzes. The bigger the better. This will be the third and final sale of his personal collection and the best has definitely been saved for last.

2 - AFTER AUGUST RIEDEL: JUDITH AND THE HEAD OF HOLOFERNES

An oil on canvas after the painting by August Riedel (German, 1799-1883) in which the biblical figure Judith stands holding a sword, the decapitated head of Holofernes partially visible behind her on the left.

A summary of the biblical story reads, “Judith, a beautiful widow, is able to enter the tent of Holofernes because of his desire for her. Holofernes was an Assyrian general who was about to destroy Judith’s home, the city of Bethulia. Overcome with drink, he passes out and is decapitated by Judith …”.

Unsigned, the size of the work equals that of the original at 53 x 39 inches and is displayed in an exceptional period frame with extensive openwork caving, dimensions 71 x 56.5 inches. The canvas is ink stamped verso ‘WIMMER & CO GALLERY OF FINE ARTS, MUNICH’. Wimmer & Co was founded in 1825.

All original and free from repair, inpainting, re-lining, strip lining or skinned surface. The surface is with layers of grime and dust. There are a few scattered abrasions and very light scratches, the painting has slipped in the original frame and the canvas has torn along the top stretcher.

A circa 1900 carved alabaster sculpture of two young men engaged in the ancient Greek martial art of pankration, a model after the Roman copy. Unsigned, measures 17 x 20 x 11 inches.

An old and obvious repair to the upraised arm of the top figure, rough-ness to the fingers of that same hand. A chip to the heel and a crack to the proper right leg of the top figure. Minor discoloration, minor abrasions and some bottom edge roughness around the base.

Displayed in an outstanding carved and gilded circa 17th century frame of tied laurel leaf carved from what appears to be walnut and in exceptionally high relief, the corners are dovetailed and joined by wood pegs, a forged iron hanger remains on the top crest. The painting measures 44.5 x 37 inches, the frame measures 52 x 44 inches. Re-lined in 1935 according to written information on the canvas, the stretchers appear to be of that same period, UV light reveals one area of inpainting upper left, three areas lower left quadrant and scat-tered touch-up across the extreme bottom edge. The largest of these is a 3-inch repaired tear with corresponding 1 inch diam-eter area of in-painting.
