Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God.” Didn’t see the word “cease”? The word “Sabbath” comes the Hebrew word “Shabbat” meaning to end, to rest…to cease. Of course as soon as we hear it is a “command” some of us will react like we have to take cough syrup. Others might get a bit legalistic and want to know exactly what is permissible and what isn’t. Yet, I have come to believe that any command of our Father, who loves us more than we can imagine, commands only because it is the very best for us. Not only a command but a precious gift. We are created to, among other things…cease. Cease, from the ordinary, to enter into the holy. Cease, in order to express our love and feel His love in return. To weekly consider where He is, and where we are, and communicate our desire to close the gap. Continued on the next page

From the Pastor’s Desk……

As I sit here writing this today I am also anticipating a vacation next week. I have greatly enjoyed the pictures of your vacations from Colorado, Hawaii, and even Indonesia, and have had to fight hard not being envious!

This is the season for vacations, and probably like most of you I have run the full spectrum of them over the years. On some, I have planned every minute, jam packed, to make the very most of the long awaited time. Then, only to return from vacation, exhausted and badly in need of a vacation.

Over the last few years, Sandy and I have chosen a different kind of vacation. Lately we plan and pack as little as possible and just head to the beach. We have few expectations of the day, other than to listen to the waves, inhale deeply the salt air, and feel the power of the wind as the sun sets. If it rains – wonderful…we enjoy the beauty of the storm. Not a cloud in the sky? Great…lets head to the beach! Sandy stays on the beach – I stay in the water – occasionally we switch places. (I literally just sighed as I wrote that last bit.)

I have noticed that it usually takes me about two days to really embrace the vacation spirit. To turn off my head, my “to do” lists, and the “what if’s”. But after about two days I can truly cease…and it is…good! Cease and be at peace. Rest.

We find the word “cease” many times in the Bible. One of the most famous is in Exodus 20, as part of the Ten Commandments. “Remember the Sabbath

day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your

work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath

to the LORD your God.” Didn’t see

the word “cease”?

From the Pastor’s Desk……(Continued)

And then, perhaps a few precious time a year, to cease; look into the storm and whisper, “Oh Father, look at the power of Your hand!” From the mountains of Colorado, “Oh Lord – look at the majesty of your creation!” From Indonesia, the other side of the planet, “Oh God, You truly are the God of all the world!”

On the Sabbath, Jews will often greet each other saying, “Shabbat Shalom” or “the peace of the Sabbath be upon you.” That is my prayer for each of you. As we worship each week, and as we set aside special times throughout the year…Shabbat Shalom! Cease, rest, breathe, and be whole.

According to RW… I’m sitting here writing my Announcer article for August and the first question I’m asking my self is, “Where did the summer go?” It seems like it has flown by, but we’ve done quite a bit this summer between Vacation Bible School and a summer mission trip to Atlanta. As we prepare for the fall, here are a few things I want to share with you. Starting in August, Children’s Worship and Extended Session 2 will be combined under the name Children’s Worship and both will take place in McDowell Hall. Nothing about the format is changing other than the name and location. As we reach out to young families with children, one piece of information we got back was how confusing the names and locations were. The staff has discussed this and we feel that by simplifying the name and location, it will make it easier for parents to know where their children are at during our worship service. On Friday night, August 1, we’re having a Family Movie Night. We held one of these about a year and a half ago and had about 150 people join us in McDowell Hall. This time around, we’re watching the movie Grace Unplugged. It will start at 7:30 PM in McDowell Hall. We will provide popcorn, snacks and drinks. We ask you to invite your family, friends and neighbors, and bring comfortable seating. Some of you may have heard about the Backpack Pals project we participate in through the Communities in Schools of Lee County. In several areas, they extend the project through the summer to help out children who would not receive a lunch meal otherwise. In August, a trial program will take place for the final three weeks before school starts back. Our youth (and anyone else for that matter) will be partnering with the youth from Jonesboro Methodist Church to feed on Friday, August 8, 15 and 22 beginning at 11:30 AM. You will be hearing more about this in upcoming bulletins. Finally, on a personal note, quite a bit has been happening around the Wood household. As some of you know, Beth has been working on a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Meredith College. Starting on August 18, she will be working full-time at a school in Wake County as part of her student teaching internship. Also, it’s hard to believe that Megan turns two next month. Time really does fly. Between Beth doing her student teaching this fall and my responsibilities here, we’ve prayerfully decided to enroll Megan into a preschool beginning at the end of the month. It’s a big adjustment for everyone involved, so during this time, we covet your prayers. I also thank you for your willingness to be flexible with me as my family and I go through these changes. Thank you for being the people of God that you are.

Blessings, Rich

Dear JHBC, I want to thank the Pastor, and the ladies that provided the food, and my mom’s Sunday School Class (all of JHBC) for everything you all did in helping with my mom’s funeral. Thank you for all the prayers and may God bless you and JHBC! Beverly Johnson & Family of Diane Durham

Dear Members of JHBC, The family of Frances Leslie Winstead wants to thank all of you who did so much for our mother while she was at Parkview those 11 1/2 years. She enjoyed so much the cards, phone calls, and especially the visits. Her 96 years at JHBC were full of wonderful memories. Our family appreciates the delicious meal that was prepared for us after our mother’s funeral service. Your warms and kindness extended to us mean so much. May God bless you. Notes ♫ ♫ from Rev. Ronnie The Adult Vacation Bible School study was “The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus” by Adam Hamilton. Due to the date and time element of the study there will be more details in the next edition of The Announcer. I hope that everyone enjoyed the display in the hallway of the heroes of our country and were able to share your story with others. Thanks to all that participated in the worship service and stood proud for their freedom. If you were unable to supply us with a photo of your serviceman or woman this year, please submit your photo to either me, the church office, or Joy Scott, so we can add your photo to the collection for next year. Be sure to give us the correct spelling of the name and rank of the serviceman or servicewoman. A video of the service and display has been made and copies will be available upon request for those that are either homebound, nursing, retirement, or rehab facility. September 2014 will be JHBC’s 145th anniversary and we would like for you to be a part of our high attendance Sunday, September 21st . The following was shared with me and really is, a message within itself. Please take the time to read, study and reflect.

RECALL NOTICE:

The Maker of all human beings (GOD) is recalling all units manufactured, regardless of make or year, due to a serious defect in the primary and central component of the heart. This is due to a malfunction in the original prototype units code named Adam and Eve, resulting in the reproduction of the same defect in all subsequent units. This defect has been identified as "Sequential Internal Non-morality," more commonly known as S.I.N., as it is primarily expressed. Some of the symptoms include: 1. Loss of direction 4. Lack of peace and joy 7. Fearfulness 2. Foul vocal emissions 5. Selfish or violent behavior 8. Idolatry 3. Amnesia of origin 6. Depression or confusion 9. Rebellion The Manufacturer, who is neither liable nor at fault for this defect, is providing factory-authorized repair and service free of charge to correct this defect. The Repair Technician, JESUS, has most generously offered to bear the entire burden of the staggering cost of these repairs. There is no additional fee required. The number to call for repair in all areas is: P-R-A-Y-E-R. Once connected, please upload your burden of SIN through the REPENTANCE procedure. Next, download ATONEMENT from the Repair Technician, Jesus, into the heart component. No matter how big or small the SIN defect is, Jesus will replace it with: 1. Love 4. Patience 7. Faithfulness 2. Joy 5. Kindness 8. Gentleness 3. Peace 6. Goodness 9. Self control Please see the operating manual, the B.I.B.L.E. (BEST Instructions Before Leaving Earth) for further details on the use of these fixes. WARNING: Continuing to operate the human being unit without correction voids any manufacturer warranties, exposing the unit to dangers and problems too numerous to list, and will result in the human unit being permanently impounded. For free emergency service, call on Jesus. DANGER: The human being units not responding to this recall action will have to be scrapped in the furnace. The SIN defect will not be permitted to enter Heaven so as to Prevent contamination of that facility. Thank you for your attention!

- GOD

P.S. Please assist where possible by notifying others of this important recall notice, and you may contact the Father any time by 'Knee mail'!

Working for God on earth doesn't pay much......but His retirement plan is out of this world!

DEACON’S CORNER….. Submitted by Sam Wornom

Matthew 5:14-16 (HCSB) 14 “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp

and puts it under a basket,[a] but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the

house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine[b] before men, so that they may see your good works

and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Fellow Christians,

As I write this letter, I praise God for His many blessings to Jonesboro Heights Baptist

Church during the past church year.

It was a busy year. The year started with Jeff Roberts as interim Pastor and we finished the

year with Pastor Cal Sayles as our permanent pastor. I don’t know about you, I feel an excitement

at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church that we have been missing for a long time. Praise the Lord.

Another significant event last year was the recent elections of 6 additional Deacons to bring

the board to 15 members. This will enable us to restart the Deacon Family Ministry.

On behalf of the fellowship of Deacons, we thank all the committee chairs, committee

members, and church staff for their time and devotion to make Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church a

positive influence in the Sanford community and beyond.

I personally thank my fellow Deacons for their trust and help during my tenure as Deacon

Chair. Most of all, I thank God for His guidance and direction throughout the year.

As we all know, God never wants us to rest in our mission to bring others to know our Lord

Jesus Christ. I pray that all of you will embrace that mission with all your heart during the coming

year and forever.

Yours in Christ,

Sam Wornom, Deacon Chair

CITY ON A HILL NEWS

Greetings from rainy but beautiful Mussoorie!

Summer was a very busy time for us as we hosted a mission team of 40 young

adults from First Baptist Church of Asheville, North Carolina. This team was a young

adult choir and the whole group led worship in three churches and gave four concerts in

our area during their time with us.

In addition to concerts and worship leadership, the group also divided into

smaller ministry groups each day. Two fine arts camps were conducted at two different

locations. Over 150 children participated in these camps that explored the “I am” statements of Jesus. We saw

how God used singing, playing instruments, dance, drama, and visual art to share these “I am” statements with the

children in powerful ways. By learning each “I am” statement through the arts, the children gained a deep and rich

understanding of what Jesus was trying to convey with each of these statements. They also learned a song for each

of the statements that they can sing and remind themselves that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life!

Painting and construction were also part of the experience of the team while here. They served in two

children’s homes building relationships with the children and improving their living spaces. At the Claremont

Home for Girls, the team painted most of the home. The girls living there especially loved their new blue

bedroom. The team also worked hard to rehab the dilapidated kitchen. At the First Boy’s Home, the team built

and painted benches for a children’s worship space. At both of these Children’s homes, God allowed for the

formation of strong relationships between the team members and the children living in these homes. As a result,

real and meaningful ministry took place across cultures and we are so thankful for God’s work in this area.

The team also painted in two schools. First, they painted colorful murals at the Sharp Memorial Blind

School for the children with low vision. Now, the children who still have some vision will enjoy bright colorful

scenes on the dorm walls. The team freshened up two music spaces at our school with fresh bright paint.

Heather’s classroom has never looked better! The team also sought to support the work of our local mission hospital in Mussoorie. First, the team

distributed baby hats and blankets that some members of their church made at the hospital. On the team’s last day

in Mussoorie, we were able to distribute food and hygiene kits in a local slum village the hospital works in

regularly. God used music as a way to connect the team with the villagers. The team and villagers enjoyed

exchanging songs and even singing some together. It was a beautiful and unexpected time of interaction in which

God smashed language and cultural barriers with music.

We are so thankful for the powerful way in which God used this team from FBC Asheville! Through the

power of the Holy Spirit, relationships were built, the lives of locals and team members were positively impacted,

and deep cross-cultural ministry occurred each day. It was a joy to host this team and serve alongside them in

Mussoorie! Thanks be to God!
