THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS

Dear Friend, As you know, The Jewish Center has taken a leadership role advocating for our day schools. We have raised tens of thousands of dollars for our schools to date and we have partnered with the Orthodox Union and UJA-Federation of New York to urge New York state legislators to help ours schools. I am writing to you today because an extraordinary opportunity has arisen to secure funding for our schools at an unprece-dented level. I encourage you to join me in urging our state legislators to pass the Education Tax Credit bill before the end of the legislative session in mid-June. The bill would open up funding to both public and non-public schools and would be a great boon to our community. Our state legislators need to hear from us. Here's what you can do to help. Please take a moment to send a message to Governor Cuomo, your As-sembly Member and your State Senator to urge them to pass the Education Tax Credit bill. All you have to do is visit the following website to send your message: https://advocacy.ou.org/eitc/#/34/34 It is crucial that each of us participate in this campaign to help pass education tax credits. To learn more, please read the Jewish Week's recent piece, The Most Important Funding for Jewish Schools That You've Never Heard Of by Jeff Leb. With warmest regards, Yosie Levine Rabbi

The Eyes Have It Dr. Erica Brown, Community Scholar

We often focus on the beginning of this week’s parsha, trying to figure out the panic that swept through the crowds as the scouting party returned with its initial observations of the Land of Israel. They shared what they saw; chapters 14 and 15 emphasize sight repeatedly. They saw giant fruit and a land fertile with promise. But they also saw giant giants, and it overwhelmed them visually and destabilized their commitment to continuing the journey. This kind of catastrophizing is not unusual. There is plenty of research in psychology to suggest that as human beings we frequently lose perspective and lose it in a particular way. The negative in front of us almost al-ways gets amplified and trumps the positive, leaving few shards of optimism. We find this in our ancient story of failed leadership in this week’s Torah reading. This catastrophizing reaches an apex in 13:33 where not only do we report on what we see with our eyes, we actually project what others see with theirs, the ultimate in twisted vision: “We saw nephilim [giants] there, the descendants of giants. We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” We saw ourselves as small and insignificant and assumed that they saw the same thing. But objects in the rear view mirror may ap-pear larger than they are. Indeed, our pro-jection was not actually true. We read later in Bemidbar that foreign rulers thought of us

as one of the stronger, more terrifying ani-mals in the ancient Israelite universe: “The Moabites said to the elders of Midian, ‘This horde is going to lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field” (22:4). An ox is powerful and intimi-dating and not comparable to a grasshopper in any way. To recalibrate our vision problems, the end of the parsha concludes with a visual tikkun, a repair for our poor eyesight: "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'Throughout the generations to come you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel. You will have these tas-sels to look at so you will remember all the commands of the Lord, that you may obey them and not lower yourselves by going af-ter the lusts of your own hearts and eyes. Then you will remember to obey all my commands and will be consecrated to your God’” (15:38-40). The tzitzit were to serve as visual reminders that we have to keep our eyes on the prize – on the larger picture of what our ultimate vision is. That’s not easy to do when hurdles are present and threatening. We need a lot of help to have 20/20 vision and think about an expansive future from a place of fright. Very few in our parsha were able to sur-mount the difficulties of impaired spiritual vision. We are the proud descendants of those who could. In the spirit of Joshua and Calev who retained this majestic long-term view, it’s time to clean our glasses.
