As our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Israel at this most difficult time, much has been written and debated on the source of these tensions and their history. Following a thoroughly misleading historiography of the Temple Mount by the New York Times, our Resident Scholar, Rabbi Ari Lamm was featured in re-sponse in Tablet Magazine. His essay, Scholars Debunk ‘Times’ Arti-cle on Temple Mount can be found at tabletmag.com

To help analyze the current situation in its ever-complicated con-text, we are honored to announce a special Scholar-in-Residence weekend with renowned Israeli historian, Benny Morris on Shabbat, November 21st. On Shabbat morning, Professor Morris will deliver a public lecture entitled Har HaBayit: The Temple Mount Past and Present.

Thank you to all those who have so gener-ously contributed to our special fund to sup-port victims of terror and their families in Israel. If you have not yet contributed, I en-courage you do so before we close this ap-peal on October 23rd. Contributions may be submitted online through our website. Checks may be made out to the Rabbi Dr. Leo Jung Memorial Fund and earmarked with the words, "victims of terror."

The JC's new Volunteer Improvement Pro-gram will be kicking off its first season with a delectable KIDDUSH ON OCTOBER 24, hon-oring our current volunteers and inspiring new ones for a wide range of JC activities. A draft list of current volunteers can be found on the insert inside and published more formally next week. If we have overlooked your name as a current volun-teer, email [email protected] and if you are not yet a regular volunteer, we encourage each of you to attend on the 24th and add your name to the list by next season!

In an era when military experts concern them-selves with cyber attacks of geometrically increasing sophistication, and pinpoint drone strikes launched from a distance of literally thousands of miles, Jewish men, women, and children are being knifed to death on the streets of Jerusalem. It’s easy to forget just how fragile, and visceral, life really is. Never did it seem more appropriate to read the first few verses of this week’s sedra, and the Lord saw the land and behold, it was cor-rupted, for man had destroyed the path of God on this earth...the land had been filled with violence, ותמלא הארץ חמס. Worse still, since, in my view, it is no longer reasonable to hope that explaining the situation for the ump-teenth time will lead to anything approaching a factual portrayal in the media, we are left in a surreal twilight zone in which the cold blooded murder of Jews in their ancestral homeland is reported to us as an unfortunate development in a conflict that has no clear right or wrong. This, too, is a measure of the corruption in the land. It’s understandable why some people feel nothing other than iso-lation and despair. Yet, perhaps in reading this parshah of destruction, there is a measure of hope for us.

Based on a careful reading of the text, the Sages determined that the defining sin of the generation of the Flood was gezel, or force-fully taking that which belongs to another per-son. In large measure, Avraham, who emerg-es at the end of this week’s portion, rectifies the sin of the generation of the flood by intro-ducing the significance of chessed into the world, generously giving one’s own to others. Avraham reverses gezel into chessed. It seems to me that this is where our attention and efforts must be focused right now. If we can do very little to control the world’s apathy to the plight of the Jews in Israel, we can, and should, do a great deal to assist our brethren ourselves. My aunt in Jerusalem sent my fa-ther an e-mail in which she detailed heroic acts, combining gevurah and chessed, in which bystanders have rushed to aid of those under attack, saving lives, and preventing much greater damage by thwarting terrorists. It’s enough to remind us of the way that Avraham sprang into action when his family members needed it. May the chessed of Avraham sus-tain his children in our time of need.
