Commander's Report

Jefferson Davis Camp 175 Commander Buck Dugger

Greetings Compatriots and Friends! First, please accept my humble appreciation for your trust in me to be your Commander. I feel a bit overwhelmed and will need your help to fill former Commander Don Creamer’s shoes. Simply stated, the attack on our Southern Heritage continues to increase unabated. The most recent attack comes from the Federally funded, nationally recognized, Smithsonian Magazine. I just dropped four letters into the mail today to our Senators, Congressman and one to the editor of the magazine. I included copies of the Congressional letters with the letter to the editor, insuring that he knew I had also voiced my opinion on the issue to Washington D.C. My actions are the absolute minimum that I can do. But we must break this “minimum” attitude and adopt an attitude of, “What more can I do?”

Before we can effectively move forward we must assess our current situation and organization, identify opportunities for improvement, determine courses of action, assign tasks, then execute the plans. To begin this process we are going to review and update our Camp Constitution and By-laws. A volunteer committee will review the current document and recommend changes and updates for the membership to consider. With this firm foundation we can then confidently move forward.

Other issues that we need to address include the possibility of changing our meeting venue, fundraising opportunities, Amazon Smile donations, opportunities for contact with the public, increased/enhanced recruiting, classroom speaking...the list is endless. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. But the one underlying component of each of these endeavors is volunteer support from membership, YOU! For the first time since I’ve been a member of Camp 175 we have eight positions within the camp filled with elected officers and appointed volunteers. That is a total of five volunteers from the Camp membership. And one of the FoSCV members also volunteered to support the Camp as a Genealogist.

Active involvement and voluntarism are the backbone of the SCV. The leadership cannot possibly do it all. Nor can four or five dedicated, committed individuals do it all. Everyone must share the load and step up when opportunities present themselves. I challenge the Compatriots of Camp 175 to actively seek out opportunities to serve. We can only move forward effectively if we do it...TOGETHER.

Join me in the CHARGE!

Call to Arms Lt. Commander's Report

J.W. Latham

Compatriots,

It is the start of a new year and we have plenty on our plate this month! Jefferson Davis Camp 175 will hold our monthly meeting at the Texas T-Bone Steakhouse on Academy Blvd January 15, 2019.

We will also have our Camp 175 officials installed for their duties and responsibilities. Let us not forget the Lee Jackson Banquet on January 26, 2019 in Castlerock at 11:00 AM.

Our camp will have several new changes with a new administration and all efforts will be made to improve in areas where it is needed and still continue improve in areas where we have strengths.

In closing I would like to quote President Jefferson Davis, "Nothing fills me with deeper sadness than to see a Southern man apologizing for the defense we made of our inheritance".

Confederate Watchman on the Wall

The Bible clearly paints a picture of soldiers under God’s direction as “ Watchmen on the wall “. As reference, I turn your attention to ISAIAH 21:6, ISAIAH 62:6, EZEKIEL 3:17, HABAKKUK 2:1

In God’s ultimate plan of the ages, He has always chosen His people to be His Watchmen.Surely, God does not need “ eyes “ to see what unfolds in His universe, instead, in His plan for eternity He has repeatedly told His people to “ call out to me, and I will answer and intervene “

Today, the call is even greater. As we enter dark days of a Godless society intent upon removing God from our hearts, we must endeavor to enhance our service to our Creator. Todaysconfederates, you and I, are people of His calling because the truth has been revealed in ourhearts, whose eyes are open to the truth. We must offer daily reports as good soldiers ofChrist…II TIMOTHY 2:3,4

As true watchmen, our daily prayers invoke and empower the actions of heaven. Typically, we share our daily prayers to God, but due to our UNIQUE position as Confederate Americans, we need to include calls for actions, BEYOND our immediate and domestic needs. As Watchmen, our prayers and intercession have great consequence! Our reports to heaven have alreadystopped some “ Trojan Horses “from affecting our country.

God uses his watchmen for a twofold purpose: 1) to report to heaven for further intervention, and 2) to hear from heaven to warn the sleeping nations we watch over.Let us enter 2019 as the “ active watchmen “ that God calls Confederate Americans to be!

Forward the Colors! Adjutant & Editors Report

Beau D. Purdom

Compatriots,I hope that the new year has found you all well, as we prepare for another year of

fellowship and activities for Camp #175. We have many on-going projects for 2019, and we look forward to all of you participating and helping out as we follow the Charge.

The first of those projects is our new monthly newsletter. In these pages you will find events, notes, photos, and other information related to our wonderful camp. Keep in mind that this is YOUR newsletter, so please email me with any photos, stories, or articles you feel would be of interest to the camp. That email is [email protected]

A few other projects that we will be starting this month are our Grave & Events Committees, respectively. Both committees are volunteer opportunities to help grow members and to honor our ancestors. More on these activities will be discussed at the meeting this month.

Also, the new camp officers have decided that the camp requires a new officer position, 2nd Lt. Commander. 2nd Lt. Commander is a full, elected officer position, that will be in charge of heritage defense issues. This will require a special election, more details to come at this months meeting.

Lastly, we will be having a camp membership drive over the next 12 months. For each new member you bring in to the camp you will have your name entered for a drawing for a $100.00 Gift Card and your next years dues paid in full. Let's get in touch with neighbors, co-workers, family and friends to bring them all into the fold. As always FREE genealogy help will be provided where needed.

Did you know!?

On March 11, 1861 The Constitution of the Confederate States of America is signed in Montgomery, Alabama by representatives from South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. Derived from the United States Constitution, it delegates more rights to the states. In framing the Constitution of the Confederate States, the authors adopted, with numerous elisions and additions, the language of the Constitution of the United States, and followed the same order of arrangement of articles and sections.

The citizen-soldiers who fought for the Confederacy personified the best qualities of America. The preservation of liberty and freedom was the motivating factor in the South's decision to fight the second American Revolution. The tenacity with which Confederate soldiers fought underscored their belief in the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. These attributes are the underpinning of our Republic and represent the foundation on which this nation was built. Today, the Sons of Confederate Veterans is preserving the history and legacy of these heroes so future generations can understand the motives that animated the Southern Cause. The S.C.V. is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans and is the oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate soldiers, sailors and Marines. Organized in Richmond, Virginia in 1896, the S.C.V. continues to serve as a historical, patriotic and non-political organization dedicated to insuring that a true history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved.
