THE ISLAND PROJECT

Scenario: You are on a school trip sailing to Japan. Disaster strikes as your boat is caught in a tropical storm and it

crashes and sinks into the sea near a tropical island. You are one of the survivors.

Task: Write a description of the boat crashing and sinking. Build tension and suspense. - Include: adjectives, similes, the senses - Write in the first person ‘I’

Consider: how excited people were about visiting Japan. What were they looking forward to seeing? their feelings as they see the storm approaching how strong the winds were; the sound they made; the impact of the waves on the boat how choppy the waves were; how high and destructive they were; people’s feelings during the storm and as the boat crashed and sunk.

Scenario: Having survived the tropical storm and the boat sinking you and a number of your class mates managed

to swim to shore.

You are tired, battered and bruised but in order for you and others to survive somebody needs to take charge and

be a leader. It will involve making life or death decisions.

You believe you would be the best leader.

Task: List below your qualities and skills and outline how they would be beneficial on the island (you can make it up!)

Qualities Benefit for island Skills Benefit for island

Thinking point: Qualities e.g. loyal, trustworthy, determined, fair, Skills e.g. building shelters, making fire, skilled hunter, talented archer,

I want to be a leader!

Task: Write a speech using some of your qualities and skills persuading others on the island to vote for you.

1st paragraph: your strongest point. Suggestion: Start with a rhetorical question and then answer it yourself!

2nd paragraph: highlight another one of your qualities or skills. How will this help everyone? How does it make you stand out from others?

3rd paragraph: reveal another one of your qualities or skills that will benefit others. Use ‘you’ or ‘we’ to involve the audience.

4th paragraph: anything else you think of relevance to your speech. Think of a rousing, punchy ending.

Scenario: You have been elected leader hurrah!

Your first decision is to determine whether you should stay at location X for your first night.

Task: Produce a mind map highlighting the positives and negatives of staying at site X. You should write the positives in one colour and the negatives in another colour

Thinking point: Positive: Near a river so have access to drinking water Negative: Being near a river means we are vulnerable to flooding.

Site X- should you

stay or go?

Task: As leader you are have the final decision should you spend your first night at site X or should you move on? Justify your decision!

I vote to …

Stay at site X

Move on

I feel this because…

Scenario: You have survived your first day and night on the island.

Task: Write a diary entry summarising your first day and night on the island.

Describe location on island- message in bottle

Consider: - how you feel e.g. tired, soar, scared, relieved, determined - what were your initial priorities e.g. a drink as dehydrated

Moving onwards and upwards!

Scenario: You have been at your first site for several days and have become more energised. It is time to find a

better site to reside in until you are hopefully rescued.

Task: i. Study the map (front page) and decided upon your dream site. Place a symbol on the map where your dream

site is. Remember to add your symbol to the map key. ii. Describe the location of your dream site in relation to your starting site (X)

iii. Draw a footpath from X to your dream site. Add footpath symbol to your key.

Consider:

Direction – using a compass describe the direction you would have to follow to get to your chosen site

Distance – how many kilometres (km) is your new site from site X

Relief- do you walk over flat or mountainous land? Do you cross rivers, marshes, beaches etc?

Symbols – use the symbol key to describe what features you pass and have at your site e.g. woodlands, mountains, rivers etc

iv. You have decided to put a flag on your site and claim it for your group. Design a flag that represents your group. Add labels to explain the features of your flag e.g. I have used the colour of red as it is a symbol of strength and courage

v. Draw a picture of your campsite. Add labels to highlight key features of your site e.g. huts built on stilts for protection from flooding; campfire used for…

Top Ten!

Scenario: Some of the remains of the shipwreck are washed onto shore. They are listed below:

Compass

Matches

Swiss knife

First aid kit

Bundles of rope and string

Clothes

Mobile phone

Fishing rod

Flare gun

Book on tropical plants

Vegetable seeds Task: Study the list above. You have time to grab four items before they are washed back in to the sea.

i. State what items you would save ii. Rank them from most to least valuable

iii. Outline how you would use item whilst living on the island.

Saved Item Rank (1= most valuable

4= least valuable) How you would use item on island?

The Island Beast

Scenario: One morning you wake up and find strange footprints on the beach. You follow the prints across the island to a mysterious part of the island with strange statues and dark trees. You can see a stream coming from a hollow in the ground and peer over. There, lying in a pit of slime is a hideous beast. Task: Draw an annotated diagram of the beast. The write a detailed description of the beast. In your description you should consider what adaptations the beast has and how they may help it survive on the island e.g. The beast has webbed feet so that it can swim in the sea and in rivers. This is useful because… Also remember to include:

- Adjectives: describing words - Simile (comparing using like or as) e.g. its eyes were like huge searchlights - The senses: what you see, smell, hear, taste, touch/feel.

Danger Danger!

Scenario: One of your watchmen has noticed that the beast is following your scent and heading straight towards

your camp. As group leader you must decide how to prepare for a possible attack. Your watchmen predict the

beast will arrive in approximately 3 days.

Task: How should you prepare for the possible attack? Do you move or fight it out? Do you need to make weapons,

traps etc? Will you try and catch the beast? The decision is yours!! Produce a cartoon strip outlining your response

(use words and pictures and feel free to add boxes)

HOME SWEET HOME

Scenario: After months of being on the island eventually a plane flies over and the pilot spots you and your Crown

Woods tribe. He rescues you all and flies you back to the UK. As you can imagine there is a lot of media interest in

you. One paper has asked you to write a column on how to survive on a tropical island.

Task: Name of the newspaper

Task: Form a dramatic headline about the your time on the island. You should use sensational or emotive language

Task: Now brainstorm your ideas as to what you would include in the article.
