uld start this article like so many others before mehave, well almost. Looking back through a lot of

e past W's it would appear that mast people whoto write here wrote about

their frosh week so many years back. For me FROSHweek is exactly one year ago So reminiscing about thegood old days seems inappropriate. All I can tell youis that FROSH week waS so much fun that eventhough I 'm on B-Soc, and therefore not in school now, Iam back here to enjoy your FROSH week as a FROSHLeader. So instead of telling you how much fun youare going to have this next week, just because I did, J'lllet you in on a few of the secrets of the term ahead.Someone once told me (probably my m9ther) that youwill only get out of life what you put into it. Well that's

great, what the hell is that supposed to mean? Well Ifor me it means that by getting involved in theI enjoy, I'll enjoy them more. But that only makes

right? Well unfortu nately there is a little more to ithan that I mean if you only spent t:4ne doing the thingsyou enjoy you probably would be leaving universitycome Monday. That's where things get complicated. I

don't know about you, but I would much rather go outwith friends than do an assignment that's due five daysfrom now. But unfortunately, and yes I along with manyothers have learned this the hard way, it doesn't work thatway. You see if you have an assignment due five daysfrom now, you probably have one due six days from nowand seven days from now and so on. And then something happens and you rrUss a day, and you start trying toplay catch-up. Well you can just imagine how well thatwould work (it doesn't) The fact is once your behind, you're there for a while and the only way back out is toskip what you've missed and go on.

The gcxxi news is that there is much more to being aFROSH than just learning this lesson the hard way (as I'msure you will). Being a FROSH provides an opportunityto become a new you. If you don't like you, then changeyou, if you're stuck on you, great, go 'with it Now is thetime to expand your skills or build on what you know. There are so many things you can learn The Iron Warrioris a great example. This past summer was my first introduction to the IW. Previously I had done yearbooks andthings like that, but I did it all on ffiM's. Well that changedthis summer when upon joining the IW I was given thetask of figuring out how the Mac's worked and laying outthe entire paper in just one night (ya, like the Mac is sohard to use ) Ok, so it's not a great example, but there is

a lot you can learn if you want toI guess at this point I should let you in on thatsecret that makes this whole system work You mayalready been told about this little group of fanaticsbelong to this elite society called EngSoc. Well if yoalready heard that, you've been miss-informed. EngSthere for everyone, and it is different for everyone. Speople see EngSoc as a place for chea p photocopies, others see it as milk and cookies every other We dnesSo I guess the best advice I can give you, from the limknowledge I have acquired over the last year, is tosimply drop by and see what's in it for you

But anyways back to my original topic (although I dthink I have one). It would be ashame if after four moof schooL all that you learned was your graphics coSo instead try and learn something new and interesbut also take some time and learn to prioritize, cyou're going to need that skill. And finally, as abright man once said (surprisingly it was one oprof's). ' 'If you do your best you will have done bthan most the people in this world."

W elcome Frash to the University of Waterlooand welcome back from the work term tothe rest of you A-Soccers. I hope you all hadas much fun as I did over the summer (see Doof'sOffterm Report). Today begins yet another WaterlooEngineering Frosh Week. An event that has becomequite a tradition.

All of you Frosh should realize that the week ahead islikely to affect the rest of your life. Some of the people youmeet during Frosh Week will become good friends whileothers you may never see again. They will be the peopleyou will turn to when you aren't done that assignmentthat's due in two hours. They are the people that youwillfight with over Watstar terminals. They are the people.whowill have the same job interviews as you. Uke themor not, most of them will be with you during the Winter01 term when you're all taking 4B. Don't waste thisopportunity to get to know your classmates in a social setting before classes start.

The University of Waterloo is one of the best schools inthe country and Engineering is the faculty that it wasfounded on and the faculty that makes it what it is today. The only thing lacking from our school is tradition. Thereare very few things here at Waterloo that have much of a

history due to the fact that the University is only 39 yearsold. There are only three things that define Eng Soc thathave been around longer than I've been alive. They arethe Tool, the Eng Soc Crest and Frosh Week. The first twopoints are merely items that have been incorporated intoour lives (for more infonnation consult your copy of 1hf1k Qk). Fresh Week however is an event that requires participation in order to be enjoyed. It s the only piece ofourhistory that you have to decide what you are going tomake of t.

Over the summer I have learned a great deal about thetradition of Frosh Week. I have heard tales of events thatwouldn't even be considered today. I heard of the begin-ning of many customs. I have remembered activities thathave since been banned.

The earliest tale that I've heard in any detail happenedduring Frosh Week '81. Apparently that year's Frashwere taken on a mystery pub crawl to various bars insmall towns in the area surrounding Waterloo. The finalstop was the Breslau Hotel where the five bus loads ofFrosh were dropped off, just like at all the other stops. TheFrosh leaders then proceeded to leave with the buses, alifive of them. At some point, the Frosh realized that theyhad been abandoned and that they were going to have tofind their own way back to Waterloo. Fortunately, a couple of the local Fresh recognized their location and wereable to guide the 200 drunken Frosh on their two or threehour hike back to campus.

Throughout the 80's Fresh Week went through many

changes. From Lady Godiva's occasional appearanccampus in the mid...8()'s to the creation of the mud pitthe end of the decade, Engineering Orientation has hvaried history. In the 90's, mast Frash have beenthrough a similar schedule of events and been presewith the same basic Frosh kit Of course there's beetransition from mud to peat moss to dog food to the FWash (all since I got here) to ???? but we've all becomedy night at Fed.As with every Fresh Week, this one will introduce

activities, toys and practices. This should be the firstlic appea rance of the unhcxxied Tool Bearers as well aintroduction of the kazoo. While the unhcxxied Toolers are here to stay, the kazoos are probably just a pasphase.

The one thing that all these events have in commthat they have brought the Fresh together. I ll never fmy fellow purple Frash who made it to the HaveScunt judging at 6 o'clock in the morning of my firsnighter. I bet there aren't too many Frosh that dremember who they walked with on the way back Breslau that night in '81. I expect that many of youremember that first all-kazoo band you fonned.

I hope that all of you have as much fun as I did dumy Frosh Week. Just remember, you only get as mout of Fresh Week as you put into it So come on ouenjoy

Words Of Distant WisdomRyan Chen-WingBaibizarroEditor-in-ChiefCoWagOOba It's great to see you here for frosh week, the vestibule of yourpost-secondary education. Much more wonderful it is, you're readingThe Iron Warrior the official publication of the Waterloo EngineeringSociety. Here you are at UW which is, I can assure you, one of the schools inCanada. Please enjoy your week, this newspaper and the longer lasting schooltime which is to follow.

This is the newspaper of all engineering students at this schooL The Iron Wais written and read by you and me, a fonun for all. f you want to be a part of protion, or tell me what you think or just say hi you can do one of two things. Youcome to the office in CPH Foyer or walk around the halls acting as if you're miny ur own business. The Iron Warrior will speak for itself once we start normalduction so don't be left out. Pick it up and read it. It's everything that's fit to pand more.

School and EducationFrosh Week We are all here to go to school remember that, but do not forget you are heget an education Education is something that is important, however different, fo

of us. When I came to school here I felt pretty smart, now I feel less smart butsurprised how much I have learnt.ust barely, I can remember my first week here. I was only seventeen, aniving in

Waterloo from B.C. for the first time. I was shy nervous and unsure for a while. Aftersome time, though, I got to know people who, it turns out, aren't too bad after all.

Just as with me, rash week can be a shocking and intimidati ng time for anyone. You're away form home and in a new and strange environment. Frosh week existsfor you to have fun but also to ease your transition and point you in the right direc-tion It's good to remember that every other frosh is in the same situation and youshould help each other out and get to know each other. Keep in mind, also, thatBigs,Huges, Super Huges and Edcom are here for you so talk to them if you need any-thing. They're great sources of help, answers, friendship, laughs and loads of othergood stuff.

Almost forty years ago this university was started on an old farm. Besidefarm was some swampy marsh land, where our engineering buildings now stSwamps hold a myriad of life but also house stagnation and festering homogenn the same way education can be one aspect or the other of a swamp. Do not giv

to mediocraty or conformity, be different and better. Don't get just any crazy iget them all.

Question everything. Ask questions about what you don't know. More imtantly, question what you do know and what you do believe. From the first yougainknowledge but the second can give you wisdom.

Be sure to not let school get in the way of your education.Thank you for reading. Have a gocxi week, and a great life. The Iron WarriorFRO S H WEE K i 9

The SuperHUGE Spew sNanceSuperHuge 96Congratulations on the best decisions you'veever made/ .choosing Waterloo Engineeringand participating in the most FANTASTICfrosh week any where in the universe My name isNancy Baggio and I am one of your SuperHuges forOrientation '96. Huh? Well that basically means thatI have been working hard all summer with mycohorts to bring you this wonderful week.

By now the week is well under way, and I hope youare enjoying yourself throughlYI like I mentioned I'vebeen thinking frosh week all summer and am very anx-ious to see things come together. The most importantthing I'd like to stress is to have a great time this week.We have tons of events planned and hope you wish toparticipate in all of them.

YOURCOWURGROUPBy now I assume you have met your colour group

members, bigs and huges. You will become very closeto these folks as the week goes on, trust me. Keep inmind that your bigs, huges are there for you all week Ifthere is anything you need, would like to know just askthem and. they would be happy to help you or lead youto someone who can. Don't be shy, we were all froshonce too

SHIRTS AND HARDHATSYes .. you must sport your rash shirt and hardhats at

all times this week. Be proud. This allows us to identi-fy one another as a faculty and by colour group. Theremay be certain events that you should leave your hard-hat at home, but your bigs and edcom will let youknow.EVENTSAs mentioned the week is packed with events

designed to orient you to UW engineering. f you havepurchased a rash kit, you are welcome at any events. Ihighly recommend that you attend as many as humanly possible to get the full effect, but remember you arenot obligated to do anything you don't want to Else-where in this W issue there is a full schedule of events, which will also be posted up in CPH foyer, outside ofPOEIS, so if you ever need to find out where we'll becheck it out.

1'd like to personally invite each of you to introduceyour self to me sometime this week (I ll be the girl inpurple, BUBBLES), I'd love to meet you, hear what youhave to say about the week I'd also like to make sureyou understand that you may bring anyquestions/concerns my way at any time during theweek. I shouldn'tbe too difficult to find and can alwaysbe reached by cell phone and your bigs/huges willhave my number

The Internal Structure of Eng SocEng Soc has a number of different lev

els, and this article will hopefully helpyou in understanding the structureof theSociety. There are four elected executivepositions: The President is responsiblefor everything in the society; The VPExternal looks after all conferences, andcommunication with anything outsidethe society; The VP Internal boldlyguides the internal side of the society;and the very important VP Finance takescare of all the finances of the Society(basically where your $14 goes).

These four are in charge of the Engineering Society and, through Eng SocCouncil meetings, they keep us informedabout issues related to Eng Soc, and theyget feedback from Council about howthings are going out in the real world.COlU1cil meetings are also important forcommunicating the services and eventsthatwe provide.

Council consists of all fee paying EngSoc members, with class reps as votingmembers. Another important segmentof Council are Directors. Directors arestudents who are responsible for onespecific event or service. They rangefrom charities, to internal relations, tolooking after the Orifice.

Communication is the key to Eng SocWithout the important link betweenCouncil and its members, the societyserves no purpose. The purpose of theclass rep is two-fold; we rely on the classreps to communica te the servicesand theevents of the society to the students, andequally important is that each student'sviews and opinions are adequatelyexpressed through the class rep to Coun-

cil. The class rep is our communicationlink; however, they cannot always organize everything. Here are some uggestions on a class structure to ensure fullcommunication.

A Guide to Your Oass StructureOass Reps (2)Each class should elect tI 0 class repre

sentatives. This should be done in thefirst week and a half of classes so that allthe class reps can be present at the firstCouncil meeting. The duties of the classrep include: attending all council meetings, voting on bellalf of their class onissues brought up at council, relayinginformation from council meetings to theclass, and relaying any concerns frommembers of the class to the council. TheEng Soc meetings are scheduled everysecond Wednesday at 5:30, starting September 18, and a schedule can be foundon the blotter in the Orifice. We encourage all students to attend Council meetings, but your class rep is assigned theofficial vote on any issues. Your class repshould also help lead your class in thebattle for P**5 (paul and Paula PlumberParticipation Points) victory

WEEF Rep (1-2)You all should have received informa

tion on the Waterloo EngineeringEndowment Fund (WEEF) by now. Ifyou haven't, here is a brief overview. The idea of an endowment fund is toinvest contributed moneys and use theincome on things that we, as students, need. The principle (all the money col-

All proposals areubmitted by the student or their

departments (i.e. Ch m Eng, Civil Eng,etc.) to the WEEF funding Council, which allocates funds once per tenl1. Thefunding council is composed primarilof tudents. Your WEEF rep is th votingmember representing your best interests. As you can see, this position is importantbecause it is the students who have tilepower to decide where we pend thmoney, not the University.

VariOllS OtherRepsMost classes have an athletic rep.

These people organize class teams to beenterred in Eng Soc and Campus Rec.sporting events. They also help co-ordinate the efforts of class members whowish to organize events themselves.

Some classes have treasurers to controlclass finances. Why do you have classfinances? Special things like class shirts,

hats, matching socks, etc. need to beselected, ordered and paid for. Usuallytwo people are nece ary to organizethis.

noth r idea i a Photo rep whow uld liect photos that could be usedfor y ur graduating yearbook (it's important not to los ight of the end goal).M t cl rely on individual to provid pictures, but a Photo Rep provides aguaranteed method of ensuring the pho-tos ru here in fi e ill'S.

TI1Ct'C is also the need to organiz yourclass for the SCUNT that will be happening during this teml. It i similar to thone in frosh week, but la ts an entire 24hUTS.

Th people in y ur cla will be withyou for the n t fiv years, and class spirit cru1 only be achieved by group participation These suggestions are meant asa guide to help you reach that goal. There are three Oass Rep Advi.soTS thist rm, Andrew Hately, Rachael SZklUCUlrutd Shelby Winkler. They will be contacting your class soon, and will be available for consultation all term. Rememberto get involved; it's a lot of fun, rutd agood chance to learn some excellentpersonal r elation skills(of growing importance in the jobmarke t today).

Engineering. Get ready for the rollercoaster ride we call"post-secondary education" (and you thought highschool was fun ) This column is aimed towards youfroshlings to get you up to speed on so me of theacronyms and phrases that make sense to everyoneelse, but probably leave you scratching your heads inconfusion.

CPH: Carl Pollack Hall. That's where all the coolengineering stuff is, the C&D, the Orifice, the WEEFOffice, POETS, the IW Office. It's all here. Confused ?Read on

Needles Hall (aka Needless Hell): This is whereStream 4 people get to learn how to hold a 20 kg backpack, a clipboard and a pen and learn to read microprint from 10 feet away over two people's shouJdersand under another person's leg while avoiding impactwith other students 20 kg backpacks. Don't worryStream 8 people, you learn about this next term. Needles Hall is also where the co-op department is. Thisbuilding is generally a vortex of despair which mostpeople try to avoid at all costs .. unless you need a job

DC: The Davis Centre. Big glass building north ofEngineering. Rumours have it there's a library in there .Chem 102 classes also rumoured to have been taughtthere.

C&D: Coffee and Donuts. It's in CPH. See, you'relearnin g the lingo already An Engineering Society service where you can buy cheap food between classes (orduring them). Go say, "Hi " to Mary. Just look down. She's the one that talks funny . Gust kidding Mary,we're the ones who have the accent.) Sorry, no direct-to-class deliveries.

Engineering Society: That's you. If you're in undergraduateengineering, you're part ofEngSoc. We're onebig happy family who happen to be the best bunch ofstudents on campus EngSoc is sp lit into EngSoc Aand EngSoc 'B'. Right now, EngSoc N is in session.People who are presently on a work-term are EngSoc'B'. S tream 4 people will be EngSoc 'A' for a LONGtime. You Stream 8 people become EngSoc 'B' nextterm. Got it straight? Good. 111e Engineering Societyruns about a trillion social events each term and provides great services like the C&D, POETS, photocopiers, etc. EngSoc needs a lot of volunteers to makethings run, so get involved It's very rewarding andyou get to meet great people.

Orifice: The Engineering Society Office located inCPH 1327. This is where cheap photocopies are available Go say, "Hi " to Betty. She's the one behind thedesk The Eng Soc executives are in here, too. You canalso read the newspaper, get old exams and check classboxes for up-to- date info. on events. M Summer Term. A quiet, peaceful timein Eng Soc. Less students on campus. Less. ues to arise. A great time to be Off-TermRep. NOT

I have never seen so many things come up undernew business in a term's worth of Eng Soc meetings inmy life It was insane All of a sudden, policies, procedures and EMPWYEES came flying out of no where. But I digress.

I began my term on very quiet note. I started working at Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro in lateApril and by the second week I was placed on a fourday work week with four day weekends. The days offturned out to be very useful later in the term as deadlines approached.

The first Eng Soc meeting was rather sedate with oneinteresting twist. The initial guess at what the budgetwould look like was presented by Mike Worry (VP-Fin.). This is new in that the budget usually doesn'tcome up until the second meeting. A lot of the traditional summer events were announced as well as awhite water rafting trip. This trip turned out to be a bigsuccess by all accounts.

The second Eng Soc meeting is where the chaosbegan. The official budget was presented as per normalscheduling but it contained two sets of numbers -SAVE. and no-SAVE.. This had many people confused until the concept of S.A.V.E. was explained.SA.v.E. sta nds for theSeasonal Averaging of VariableExpenses. The theory behind this program is that thereare certain expenses Eng Soc has that remained fixed nomatter how many students are on campus (primarilyOrifice upkeep). During summer terms, Eng Socreci.eves less operating money from collected fees thanthe other two terms. This results in less money per student to be spent directly on the fee-paying student s during the summer. The proposal dealt with this by takingmoney from fall and winter terms' budgets and spending them in the summer. The exact implementation

proposed was the spending of o t y e t ~ o l l e c t e d W97and F97 fees during the S term. This met with someresistance and a vote to table the motion until after itcould be discused with the classes.

The other noteworthy part of the meeting was a briefpresentation: n .RA . (Campus . Advisory ommittee). Yes, such an organization does exist In lactthey were soliciting Engineering input. ApparentlyEngineering has a couple of seats on the committeewhich are rarely filled by anyone and yet we're alwaysbitching about the way they run things. Anyone interested can find out more information in the P.A.c. (Ithink they have a bulletin board with meeting times orsome sort of office).

The third Eng Soc meeting was larily straght forward. The budgetwas passed with the SA.v.E. program fullyimplemented (this only affects B-Soc). One of the Orifice Directors announced a new arrangement that wasmade with H.M.V. where they lend us .D. to play inthe Orifice on a weekly basis in excl1ange for US displaying a sign saying they provided the c.o.'s. A requestlist was placed on the Orifice count er and the Orificeturned into a whole new place. Hopefully this will becontinued in the fall.

The fourth meeting broughtanother couple surprises.First up was another Mike Worry proposal. This onwas about hiring a new employee for Eng Soc. Theposition is called the Corporat Manager. Th personwould be Eng Soc's and WEEP's link with corporationsfor soliciting advertising and donations for variousEngineering productions and events. A more detaileddescription should be available in the Orificeafter clas.res start. The second surprise came from Kely Folley ofthe Feds. She was introducing some new CASA policies. Cont act Kelly at the Fed office for more details.

Early July brought the Canada Day celebrations, theSemi-Formal and Tal-Eng. All of these were extremelysuccessful, from the water slide to the roast pig, and agood time was had by all.

Eng Soc Meeting number five broug ht forth furthurdiscussion on the topic of the Corporate Manager withvery little resolved.

The next day was election day for B-Soc executive. The new leaders are: President Doron Solomon, VPExternal John Faber, VP-Intemal Kim Whitear, VPFinance Jason Worry and WEEF Director Keith Parker.

Joint Council quickly followed. The m.aln item on theda w th first ubli resentation the re posed Iron Warrior Policy. This was generally well

accepted wit h some discussion on details of the policy.Copies of the policy are available in the Orifice. Thiswas also A-Soc's first exposure to the Corporate Man-ager concept.

At the final meeting of the term B-Soc decided to passeverything without even thinking (I think they were alljust trying to get the meeting over with). They passedthe Iron Warrio r Policyafter everyone present admittedto not reading it all. They passed the Corporate Manager Proposal with the stipulation that they were in support of hiring somronC' regnrdlcs.

HeyThereWelcome to Engineerll1g at UW My

name is Nancy Baggio and I am yourVice President Internal for EngineeringSociety A. I suppose if you are reading

oc e WSVP Internal A Soc Nancy aggiothis paper yu are participating in themost amazing frosh week ever .. (I mpretty sure it has something to do with aFANTASTIC SuperHuge ). I hope youare living it up and having the time ofyour life.

I m not sure what you know aboutEngSoc or what the other exec membersare going to tell you in their spews, butthe point I'd like to make is that EngSocis a super terrific organization tha t makesEngineering at Waterloo a wonderfulplace to be. All undergraduate engineers are members of the society andbenefit from the Society in many, manyways, both academically and socially. In

the next few weeks, or maybe even inthis IW issue your will learn all aboutwhat the Society has to offer. (pssss ..youcan get a head start by having a browsethrough 'The Book'')

As your VP Internal I am personallyresponsible for making sure all membersknow what we have to offer and how tomake the most of it so if ever there arequestions / comments suggestions stifling facts .....please bring em on.

You can either find me in the EngSocOffice (or know more affectionatly astheOrifice) or POETS (our fabulousLounge/Pub), you can email me nfbaggio@chemical, or drop a note in my

WEEF A SOC Paul CesanaPaulCesanaWEEF DirectorHey. After writing my last article, I feelthe need to write something reasonably

short and to the point, sohere goes . .The purpose of this article is to explain

to you what WEEF is. WEEF stands forthe Waterloo Engineering EndowmentFund. The Fund was conceived by twostudents, Avi Belinsky and John Vellinga, over a beer in POETS in 1989. It cameinto being within a ye ar of its conception. The goal of WEEF is to continuouslyimprove the educational environment forundergraduat engineering students. Tomake this possible w need the help ofvisionaries like yourselves.

The premise of WEEF is simple; WEEFcollects donati ons and puts them into afund. The interest earne d on the fund isspent each year on undergrad laboratoryequipment and student projects. Theprinciple portion of the fund is neverspent which allows the interest each yearto grow. The donations that build thefund come from three sources: studentdonations, Co-op employer donations(EMC), and engineering AJumni (plummer's Pledge).

Since the inception of WEEP in 1990,WEEP has distributed over H LF AMILLION DOLL RS toward newequipmentand projectssuch as computerlab upgrades, student research projects, and other academic tools. As of May1996 the principle portion of the endowment fund has exceeded $2.1 MILUO ,growing at $loo, cro per term This year

alone over $125,(XX) will be allocated bythe funding council towards improvements in Waterloo Engineering. Some ofthe recent funding decisions have included: Pentium computers, high speed oscil-loscopes, incubators, and many studentprojects such as Midnight Sun and Concrete Toboggan.

There are two main governing bodiesguiding WEEF: the Funding Council andthe Board of Directors. The Board ofDirectors (which has 2/3 student membership) sets the policy and direction forthe Fund. The Funding Council, which ismade up of one student representativefrom each class or K-section (approx.35in total), reviews the requests for fund ingand recommends its distribution. Thisstructure allows WEEF to be responsiveto the growing and changing needs ofengineering undergrad students.

You might have noticed on yourtuition statement a line entitled, "StudentEndowment Fund $75.00". Forengineering students this refers to WEEF. Thisvoluntary donation is the largest andmost important contribution to WEEF.The potential of this fund is enormous. For example, Princeton University has anEndowment fund of $2.8 billion CDN.The interest earned on their fund isgreater than the University of Waterloo'stotal budget WEEF aspires to be as successful, but we understa nd that the cost ofbeing a student is rising. With recent university cutbacks the importance of WEEFto engineering is growing and we hopethis will be all the incentive you need todonate. If you feel you cannot afford

inbox.Another point I d like to stress is ththe fun and excitement doesn t havestop after frosh week .EngSoc has lotscool stuff happeing all the time to kethings hopping all term long . like tBOT happening Sept 13th in POET(plug plug)

Hi everyone, and welcome to FroshWeek ' . I hope everyone had a greatsummer. For the rosh, I'd like to welcome you to the University of Waterlooand Engineering. You're gonna love ithere There's lots to do, tons of people tomeet, and a whole new way of life toexplore. These next five (or six, or more)years of your life could very well be thebest you ever experience.

The Engineering Society (Eng Soc) ishere to help that statement become areality. We're dedicated to improvingstudent life within Waterloo Engineeringby any means we can. Eng Soc is run bystudents and for students. Everyone cangive input into where funds are spent,

Hi there and welcome to WaterlooEngineering. As you've probably beentold about a hundred times by now, you've joined the best engineeringschool in the country, and it all startswith frosh week. Frosh week is yourintroduction to the University of Waterloo, the Engineering faculty, as well asthe Engineering Society. The Engineering Society, affectionately termed EngSoc, is responsible for hosting froshweek, publishing this Iron Warrior, andputting together your frosh kit, as well astons of other things.

I am the president of EngineeringSociety B . What the hell is the 'B' for?Good question. Since everybody in

oc e WPrez - A Soc - Jason Van Dyk JVDand everyone can help shape the society's future by getting involved. Wehave all kinds of directorships and volunteer positions to suit almost everyone's personal interests. Check out theHandbook (an Eng Soc production) formore details about what Eng Soc is allabout.

For everyone returning from workterm, I hope you all had a great term, and that you didn't party too hard (yeahright ). As usual, the new term is goingto bring some new changes. You mayhave already noticed a major one withthe TOOL. Any of you that were at''Meet the TOOL" will know what I'mtalking about.

On July 24, '% the TOOL bearers wereseen changing into their uniforms out-side a mall by an elderly woman whothought they were preparing to rob astore. She called police who in turnapprehended the bearers and took themdowntown. The TOOL was confiscatedfor a while, but the bearers were let goonce the police reaJized what was actually going on. The newspaper report wastotally messed up , and incorrect in sever-

al aspects. After m t of the smok bl '\over, the bearers and Brian Vidler, B socpresident (don't worry frosh, w '11explain the A soc B soc thing later), hadto meet with the Dean. The end resultwas a proposal that the bearers ne erappear hooded again (the identity of thTOOL bearers has been a well keptsecret for eons). This was a very difficultdecision to make, but it managed to prevent the banishment of TOOL appear-ances altogether. Don't wony, though, the whole situation is now under COI1-trol. We will be discussing the issue atthe first colmcil meeting. How's that forinteresting newsIn other Eng Soc news, we now havean Iron Warrior policy manual writtenup. Andy Chan and John Campbellwrote it at the end of last term. Themanual states the purpose of the IW, thestructure of its administration, as well asduties for each position on staff. Itincludes the introduction of new groupsthat arecorwosed-of both ex uti,.ve and..1W staff that will ensure improved communication between the two groups. Finally, it outlines specifically how dis-

Prez - B SO - Doron Solomonengineering is on co-op, we are all alternating school terms with work terms forthe 5 years we're here, with the exception of either your first two terms oryour last two terms. If you're Stream 4,you do your last two terms together, andif you're Stream 8, you do your first twoterms together. Since your frosh term(lA) is on Engineering Society 'A', if youare Stream 4, you start alternating termsright away, and so you will be on A-Soc.for most of your time here, graduatingon B-Soc. Similarly, if you are Stream 8,you will be switching to B-Soc. in thewinter, and then you will stay with BSoc. until you graduate. Basically thetwo societies are more or less identical, except for at what times they are inschooL When A-Soc. is in school, B-Soc.is on work term, and when B-Soc. is inschool A-Soc. is on work term. It's allkind of weird at first but soon youll getthe hang of the dual stream system.Don't worry, there won't be a test onthis.

During frosh well you will get a littleexposure to the Engineering Society andhow it works. EngSoc is a student run

organization made up of students whovolunteer their time (no, I'm not paid todo this) to help other students. EngSocoffers mnny services and host manyevents all of which you will h ar aboutsooner or lat r. Ev rything L., publi iz xlr ally well around th EngineeringBuildings, so don't worry about beingout of touch. If you wanl to start g >ttinginvolved with EngSoc (take it from me,it's lost of FUN ) you can start by beingan EngSoc Oass Rep. You can a k onof your big brothers and sisters, or one ofyour huges all about this. Another placeyou can find out all the info about EngSoc you heart desires is the Orifice.

The Orifice is the Engineering Society's office, and serves as the nerve center of the Engineering Society. It is located in CPH 1327, which you should beable to find by about rnid-October. Dropby, say hi, sit on the blue couch (whichnow has a purple essence thanks to me)and chill with other engineers. Ofcourse, if you prefer you could alwayshang out in POETS, EngSoc' s studentpub, which is just down the hall fromthe Orifice. EngSoc offers a lot of fun

agreements should be r solved.policy was presented at Joint Couand will be voted on at the first comeeting. If you would like to see a just drop by th orifice. For those ofthat are class reps, I strongly encouou to urge your classmates to look

You should b sure you makeinformed vote on this issue.

Finally, we introduced a proposhire a corporate manager, a temployee who would help raise Wawareness, WEEF corporate sponship, Eng Soc corporate sponsorsand handle advertis ing for Eng Soccopy of the presentation for thatshould also be in the orifice. The proal to pursue the hiring of a corpomanager will also be voted at duringfirst council meeting.

Well, I'd better quit rambling on nHave a great Frosh Week and an asome term I look forward to the waheadJaso vPresident
