  • The International Society of the Rorschach has made this form of con-tinuing education a renewed tradition,to be held every year in between con-gresses. Welcome to the VIIth SummerSeminars!

21st July-23rd July 2010We are offering continuing educationas it was done in the late 40’s and early50’s. At that time it was usually arran-ged in Zurich, Switzerland. For theearlier occasions (2001, 2003, 2004,2006, 2007 and 2009 we chose Spiez,Switzerland, Vaxholm, Sweden, Montegrotto, Italy, Lucerne, Switzer-land and Prague, Czech Republic fortheir beautiful locations and niceatmosphere. This time we have chosenMontreux for the same reason. Givingthe Summer Seminars now and then inSwitzerland also makes it possible forour participants to visit the RorschachArchives and Museum in Bern, as partof the program, which is all the moreimportant since the Summer Seminarsare held partly in order to raise fundsfor their development.

The original formatWell-known Rorschach specialistsWalter Morgenthaler and MargaretLoosli-Usteri were central to the deve-lopment of the initial programs andcontributed actively to them. Presen-tations were also made by other outs-tanding colleagues such as Schachterand Bohm. Each person involvedusually presented once, or twice at themost, and the topics varied considera-bly. We believe that there was somesort of roundtable discussion includedin some of the series, and have foundthis idea very appealing. We can alsoimagine the interesting dialogues thatmust have taken place and this is nowpart of our new tradition as well!

Recent timeOur predecessors did not have to contend with the problem of language,as all presentations were done in German. Today, we are pleased to wel-come members from all over the worldand with different languages. We havefound English to be a language com-mon enough for us all to present the

lectures only in English. There will, however, be colleagues who can trans-late on a more informal basis into othermajor languages when needed, duringthe lectures /workshops and to facili-tate the dialogues.

We usually have 30-40 participants(maximum) plus the faculty. The smallformat gives everybody a chance totake active part in the discussions andto get to know each other.

We are offering lectures, workshopson case studies and lots of informaldiscussions around different Ror-schach matters around the dinnertables and in the garden. Since we allhave our meals together and stay at thesame hotel, the chance of getting newfriends is obvious.

Last review by participantsThree golden days in PragueThe 6th IRS Summer Seminars tookplace in Prague from the 24th to the26th of August this year.

It was three days with a mixture ofvery interesting lectures, workshopsand panel discussions, and generallythe days offered very rewarding inter-national being together with collea-gues who all “love the Rorschach”.Vera Campo spoke about “RorschachAspects of Children in trouble”, Stephen Finn about “Using RorschachFeedback as a tool in Psychotherapy”,and Judith Bell from Tavistock spokeabout the use of ORT and Rorschach. To me Vera Campo’s and StephenFinn’s contributions seemed to be cha-racterized by attaching more impor-tance to the interpretation of the con-tents of the Rorschach than to theinterpretation of the Structural Sum-mary as was the work in the work shopsand the following discussions. Thisseems to be a slightly different weight-ning than I experienced at previousSummer Seminars in Stockholm andMontegrotto, and it’s also somewhatdifferent from the way my colleaguesand I usually work with the Rorschach. However I liked it and became a lotwiser listening to two such experien-ced Rorschach interpreters. Furthermore I was moved by the warmheartedcare for the patients, which seems tocharacterize them both. Anne Andro-nikof ’s highly qualified comments and

questions during the three days madea good context for the discussions, andAgneta Rosenquist made the SummerSeminars go well off practically, andher very kind manners contributed tous all feeling welcome. Finally I willmention, that “The Golden City ofPrague” showed itself in the mostfavourable light. In our spare time wetook a walk in the beautiful old city, orwe sat in a mountain restaurant loo-king at the sunset over the city drin-king a glas of wine or a Pivo. In everyway it became three golden days inPrague! I’m already looking forwardto join the Summer Seminars in Switzerland next year. Mette Bork

    Summer Resort and historical site

In the XVIII century, Montreux wasonly a collection of small villages offarmers and craftsmen. It was mostlythanks to the success enjoyed by theworks of Jean-Jacques Rousseau («LaNouvelle Héloïse», 1761) and of LordByron («Le prisonnier de Chillon»,1816) that the Montreux Riviera beganto attract its first visitors. Enchantedby the descriptions of Chillon Castleand its surroundings, the Europeanaristocracy (and especially the English)found what corresponded with thesense of serenity and change of scenerythey were looking for. In order toaccommodate the ever increasingnumber of visitors, a first guest houseopened in Montreux in 1815. Thingsaccelerated with the building of thefirst large hotels from 1840 and thearrival of the railway in 1861. Attrac-ted by the beauty of the scenery, thegentle climate and the excellent quali-ty of life, many celebrities soon startedstaying and even settling in the area.Among the most famous are VictorHugo, Gustave Eiffel, Charlie Cha-plin, Gandhi and Freddie Mercury.

The Rorschach Museum and ArchivesAny surplus income realized by theseSeminars will be used to support thecurrent operations and future deve-lopment of the Rorschach Museumand Archives in Bern, to the benefit ofall members and researchers who usethe Rorschach. Our faculty and orga-nizers have therefore agreed not toreceive any payment for this event –

which is also the tradition with theSummer Seminars.

The faculty The faculty that has been invited forthis VIIth Summer Seminars and Dia-logues, and that we are proud to pre-sent, are: Bruce Smith, USAAnne Andronikof, FranceAlessandro Crisi, ItalyChairman: Agneta Rosenquist, Sweden
