DESCRIPTION

Every human being makes attempts to obtain happiness. But with expectations of pleasure (sukha), we hurt others and give rise to causes for bondage of Karmic ties with others. One does not actually hurt others, but due to unfolding karma and accounts of past karmic ties called ‘files,’ we end up hurting others (the ‘files’). But until we come to know of its liabilities, it indeed remains a point of peril on the path of liberation. Therefore, awareness remains essential in daily life, and for that awareness to be maintained, Dadashri has said that every day, upon waking up, affirm that, ‘May no living being of this world be hurt, even in the slightest extent, through this mind-speech-body.’ By this, we all achieve the goal of attaining liberation in one lifetime.

EDITORIAL

Every human being searches for happiness, and even makes attempts to obtain happiness.That is not wrong, but while making attempts to obtain happiness, he ends up hurting others,knowingly or unknowingly. This does not come into his vision. The root cause of this isignorance of the Self.

Through absolutely revered Gnani Purush Dadashri’s endless grace, our ignorance doesleave. However, because of discharge effect, as well as expectations of pleasures from the non-Self complex due to wrong belief, we knowingly or unknowingly end up hurting others through themind-speech-body. Sometimes, we also end up protecting our mistakes. Yes, with awakenedawareness as the Self (Gnan jagruti), one does pratikraman (apology coupled withrepentance) and is in the progress (purushartha) of turning back, but even that purusharthais sometimes missed.

While crossing the street, how much awareness does a person maintain for safety? In thesame way, there is just as much of a necessity for awareness for safety on the path of liberation.The only solution that is required to become free is to become free from the bondage ofkarmic ties with others. But with expectations of pleasure (sukha), we hurt others and giverise to causes for bondage; that fact is forgotten.

One does not actually hurt others, but due to unfolding karma and accounts of pastkarmic ties called ‘files,’ we end up hurting others (the ‘files’). But until we come to know ofits liabilities, it indeed remains a point of peril on the path of liberation. Therefore, awarenessremains essential in daily life, and for that awareness to be maintained, Dadashri has given usa golden aphorism in the Pratah Vidhi (early morning prayers as instructed by Dadashri), thatevery day, upon waking up, affirm that, ‘May no living being of this world be hurt, even in theslightest extent, through this mind-speech-body.’

Behind this aphorism is a profound science that is concealed. We are to understand thisscience; we are to remain aware of the liabilities incurred in giving pain and the various waysin which we end up giving pain. We are to understand this through Akram Vignan and applyawakened awareness as the Self (Gnan jagruti) there.

So that we explicitly understand this science behind not hurting others, in this year of

{ Please note that ‘S’ Self denotes the awakened Self, separate from the ‘s’ worldly self. The Self is the Soul within all living

beings. The term pure Soul is used by the Gnani Purush for the awakened Self, after the Gnan Vidhi. The absolute Soul is

the fully enlightened Self. The worldly soul is the self. In the same manner, ‘Y’ You refers to the awakened Soul or Self, and

The Intention of ‘May No One Be Hurt Even to the Slightest Extent…’

Start by Making the Intention

Questioner: Dada, you have said thatevery morning, decide that, ‘May no one behurt through this mind, speech, and body.’But as long as there is this body (and we areinvolved in worldly interactions), to livewithout hurting any living being (jiva) is verydifficult.

Dadashri: Just because it is difficult,you cannot say that you want to live your lifeby hurting others. You should have the intention(bhaavna) that, ‘I do not want to hurt anyone.’You are only responsible for the intention; youare not responsible for the actions.

You are to keep the intention that, ‘May

2015, we are trying something new by putting out four consecutive Dadavanis on just onesubject. With this, mahatmas will be able to study in depth the first level of the four steps, that,‘May no living being be hurt through my mind-speech-body,’ in this manner:

In issue 1: Let us learn about how we end up hurting others and strengthen our resolveto not hurt others.

In issue 2: Let us cultivate the vision that sees the consequences of hurting others.

In issue 3: Using the tool of pratikraman, let us repent and apologize for the hurt thathas been given and not protect the error.

In issue 4: Let us understand the conduct of the Gnani Purush, which is free of hurt,and let us form that as our goal.

In this compilation, we will obtain special understanding on how we can embrace withawareness the firm resolve that, ‘May no one at all be hurt through this mind-speech-body,’and how we can become free of pain by interacting ideally in accordance with the rightunderstanding. Our only prayer is that through the devotion of this, by accomplishing thisaphorism of, ‘May no one be hurt through the mind-speech-body,’ we all achieve the goal ofattaining liberation in one lifetime.

May no one’s ego be hurt.’ Itis decided in your intention that, ‘May no onebe hurt even to the slightest extent.’ If youhave made that decision, then the other personwill definitely not be hurt. Therefore, you shouldmake that decision.

‘Through the mind-speech-body, I willnot hurt anyone in the slightest extent’; if onecarries on after making this intention, thenregardless of whether he is in a state ofignorance, he is not the Self, even then, that isthe greatest of nishkaam karma (that whichis done without an expectation of reward).

Questioner: If we keep the firmdetermination that, ‘May I not hurt anyone

through the mind-speech-body,’ does that giveresult?

Dadashri: Yes, that is the greatestnishkaam karma. There is only the intention(bhaav), the hurt is indeed going to happen.Hurt will not refrain from happening, but if wecontinously keep the intention, then when itcomes out (unfolds), that is a big nishkaamkarma. Who would have such an intention?That is why I teach that before going out, sayfive times that, ‘May no one be hurt even in theslightest extent through the mind-speech body.’

Along With Intention, Care is AlsoNecessary

Questioner: The intention that we makeevery morning that, ‘Through the mind-speech-body…’

Dadashri: Not intention alone, care isalso needed. It is necessary to take care thatno one is hurt in even the slightest extentthrough the mind-speech-body.

Questioner: Yes, that is correct; alongwith intention, care should also be taken.

Dadashri: If someone feels hurt, weindeed feel the echo of that hurt, and that isthe only reason that we feel hurt. But thisawareness is not there; the world carries on insuch lack of awareness.

Questioner: If someone is hurt, thatecho resonates?

Dadashri: The hurt that happens to him,and he feels, is his karmic account. But theresult (parinam) of that comes to us, after all.

Questioner: So we feel hurt?

Dadashri: There is only hurt,tremendous hurt, even more than his. People

of the world remain in violence because theyhave not been able to understand violence(himsa). Ahimsa (non-violence) cannot beunderstood, but they have not even understoodhimsa. What any given person believes to behimsa is that to kill insects is himsa. No oneshould be hurt in even the slightest extent. Evena cow or buffalo that is walking past shouldnot be hurt.

Questioner: We are referring to everyliving being, right?

Dadashri: Yes. When I was eighteenor twenty years old, I used to go to the cinema.My shoes would click against the road as ametal plate had been inserted underneath them.From the beginning, upon entering the lane, Iwould remove my shoes and carry them in myhands so that a dog would not become startled.A dog would become startled like this. If itwould look, the poor thing would becomestartled, how much pain it would feel! Whatwould happen if we were to become startled?

Questioner: Yes, it indeed happens!

Dadashri: That is why I would removemy shoes and come home. One should live ina way that no one feels hurt. How can hurt begiven to anyone? If someone feels hurt, it meansit happened indeed to you. Even then, if ithappened due to lack of understanding, thenkeep asking for forgiveness for that. All of thathurt comes to you.

Questioner: What you said about thedog that, ‘The dog would feel fear, that is whyI would remove my shoes and go,’ then howdo we preserve abhayadaan (state where noone is afraid of you) with everyone such thatthey do not feel fear due to us?

Dadashri: If we have decided it, then

how will anyone feel fear? One has to decidethat, ‘May no one feel hurt in even the slightestextent through me.’ There will be botherationfor some time, every once in a while. Then itwill all stop. It will not happen at all. Onceyou have made the decision, it will not happen.It may happen for a little while from time totime due to efforts (intents) of the past (life),but even then, you will understand that, ‘This isan effort of the past. My desire is not so today.’

It is not Possible to go to MokshaHaving Hurt Someone

Questioner: ‘Through this mind-speech-body (prapta mun-vachan-kayathi)…,’ in that, what is the meaning ofprapta?

Dadashri: Prapta means that whichyou have received, the mind-speech-body.Even if your mind is worse than someoneelse’s, you should still keep the intent that,‘May no one be hurt through me.’ It is notpossible for us to hurt someone and go toliberation (moksha). Hurting any living being,even our enemy, and going to moksha will nothappen.

The Opinion of not Giving Pain

Questioner: Dada, I want to ask onequestion. Even before asking this question, Iam asking for your forgiveness. You have saidthat, ‘May no living being in this world behurt, even in the slightest extent, through thismind-speech-body.’ So why did you take thisnegative approach? Why did you not take thepositive approach that, ‘May there behappiness’?

Dadashri: It is like this; we cannot say,‘May there be happiness.’ How can we say,‘May there be happiness’? If we had

permanent happiness, then we could say, ‘Maythere be eternal happiness.’ If we ourselvesare a little miserable, then we should first beginwith, ‘May no one be hurt through me.’ Then,‘May there be eternal happiness,’ is (to beapplied) at the top level.

Questioner: But there is no problemwith saying that, is there?

Dadashri: No, there is no need to speakat all! (We have to harbor the intent that,)‘May no one be hurt through me’; so this,‘May no one be hurt,’ encompasses givinghappiness to others. We can say, “May therebe salvation for the entire world. May therebe salvation for us and salvation for others.”And we can say, “May there be happiness,”we can say it sometimes, but saying that otherthing will give greater benefit.

Questioner: By saying, “May no onebe hurt”?

Dadashri: “May no one be hurt” is acompletely different matter! What is ourintention? That, ‘May no one be hurt.’ In termsof happiness, this is not happiness (sukha) atall. What one believes to be happiness is nothappiness at all.

Questioner: But Dada, when we usethe word happiness, we think about happinessof the Self (Atmasukha), don’t we? When wesay, ‘May others be happy,’ we are referring tohappiness (bliss) of the Self, aren’t we?

Dadashri: No, but one would notunderstand happiness of the Self! And if wesay, ‘May no one be hurt,’ then one wouldunderstand.

Questioner: So Dada, that means thatthis word is for the worldly (laukik), it is notfor that which is beyond the world (alaukik).

Dadashri: ‘May there be no hurt in theslightest extent through me’; there should bethis much intention (bhaav). Despite havingthis intention, if something wrong happens, thenrepent for that. Intention (bhaav) means thatthe opinion of today has formed that, ‘Fromnow on, my opinion is to not hurt anyone.’

Just try Looking at it Through theOther Person’s Shoes

Questioner: If no one gets hurt at all,then when we hurt someone, how does thatperson feel hurt?

Dadashri: Hurt has not gone from hisunderstanding, has it! If you were to slap me,I would not feel hurt, but for another person,there is the belief that there is hurt in that. Soif you were to slap him, then he would definitelyfeel hurt. The wrong belief has not yet left.Look at it through the level of, ‘If someoneslapped me, then I would feel hurt.’ Whileslapping someone, it should come to mind that,‘How would I feel if someone slapped me?’ Ifyou do not like to receive slaps, and if youwant to close the book (of the karmicaccount), then while slapping others, think,‘When this comes back to me, then how willI be able to take it?’

If you have borrowed ten thousandrupees from someone, and then yourcircumstances become unfavorable, then thethought may cross your mind that, ‘So what ifI do not pay him back?’ At that time, youshould investigate with justice that, “How wouldI feel if someone borrowed money from meand did not pay me back?’ Such a just intellectis needed. ‘If that happened, then I would feelvery hurt; in the same way, the other personwould feel hurt. Therefore, I definitely want togive the money back.’ You should make such

a decision, and if you make such a decision,then you will be able to pay him back.

Humanity is When no one is Hurt onYour Behalf

Live in such a way that whatever hurtsyou, may such hurt never happen to others;that is referred to as humanity (maanavdharma). Humanity means that for everysituation, one has the thought that, ‘If thishappened to me, then how would I feel?’ Ifthat thought does not come first, then that isnot considered humanity. If someone insultsme, before I insult him back, I would think, ‘IfI myself feel this hurt, then if I swear at him,how hurt will he feel!’ If one considers andlets go in this way, there will be resolution.

How can you call this being human? Theentire day, they eat and go out and come backhaving rebuked a couple of people, and go tosleep at night. Can this be called being human?It is a disgrace to humanity. A human issomeone who brings solace at the end of theday to five, twenty-five, one hundred people,even solace to five people; that is called beinghuman! This here is a disgrace to humanity.And you cannot hurt the members of yourhousehold at all. Those who have nounderstanding will hurt members of thehousehold. To get angry, swear, clash; all ofthat is raudradhyan. To create pain for othersis raudradhyan.

Pain is Given Through Spoiled Inten-tions in the Mind

Questioner: Dada, I cannot even grasphow hurt is given to others.

Dadashri: If guests do not leave afterfive to seven days, then the intent (bhaav) willspoil in the mind that, ‘Oh, why have they

come now? It would be nice if these peopleleave.’ That is considered spoiling the intent;that should not happen. They came on thebasis of Scientific Circumstantial Evidence(Vyavasthit), and they will leave on the basisof Scientific Circumstantial Evidence. Isanything in your hands?

If a guest that you do not like came toyour place, would you be pleased? Wouldyou like it?

Questioner: I would not like it.

Dadashri: Our people will put up withit, but will not say anything. Yet in the mind,they keep cursing, ‘Why did this worthlessperson come here?’ The Lord has said that,“Instead, it would have been better had youspoken clearly.” This mind is a picture of thenext life! So people are ruining their next life.Had he spoken his mind, then the other personwould have harassed or criticized him, but theaccount (of karma) would have been clearedin this life. And if in the mind he thinksnegatively, then everything is ruined for the nextlife. Now, if the guests stay for four days, untilthen, the mind will say, ‘When will they go,When will they go?’ And he will not even sleepat night, while the guests sleep peacefully!

Do not Allow the Mind to BecomeNarrow by Spoiling the Intent

This is circumstance is dissociative bynature. Its very nature is dissociative. As soonas the guests arrive, know that thiscircumstance has come; it is dissociative bynature. It will leave on its own when it is timefor it to do so. There is no need for you tomake it leave, there is no need spoil the mind.

That is why I tell everyone that, “Nomatter what the circumstance, do not to spoil

your intent. An unexpected guest may cometo visit you at an inconvenient hour, but do notspoil your intent. Feed him a simple meal, butdo not spoil your intent. Do not let your mindbecome narrow.” No one’s mind should bewounded by you. You should make everyonehappy and leave.

If you Give Pain to Others, Then youWill Receive Pain

This mind is the entire world; if youinstigate others through it, then pain will arisein the mind, and if you give happiness to others,then you will receive happiness. If you givehappiness to the world, then the mind willbecome happy. If you give happiness to othersand ask for pain, then you will not receive it.The mind is the world; however you use it,you will get accordingly. Kavi says, “The wish-yielding trees have grown in the courtyard ofthe temple of the mind. (Manmandir naanganiyama kalpataruvar ugiya re.)”Therefore, if you want worldly happiness, donot give to others what you do not like yourself.Only you have the understanding of what youdo not like; do not give to others what youfind to be painful. Do not give to others whatyou believe to be painful; then you will behappy. There is no need to even read otherscriptures to become happy. There are manyother pains beyond what you consider painful,but if you give to others what you considerpainful, then who is a greater fool than you?Then how can you find pleasure? Is there nota difference between giving knowingly andunknowingly?

Even one who does not haveKnowledge (Gnan) would understand this.What happens through this is that pain willstop arising, and happiness will start arising.You indeed have this quality. If one does this

much, he will definitely become happy.Whatever effect happens to you will certainlyhappen to others, won’t it? If you do notperceive affection (bhaav) towards you in myeyes, then do not have the same in your eyes,that which hurts others. How can you hurtothers with what hurts you?

Through Words, Waves of Pain areCreated

Questioner: Dada, in what other wayis pain (dukha) given to the other person?

Dadashri: Human beings have threekinds of pain. Physical pain is called kashta.The second is verbal pain; that is called aghaa. Once it enters the heart, it never leaves.And the third is mental pain, which is calleddukha. There is no problem with mental pain;there is a problem with verbal pain. This isbecause the mind carries on without beingvisible, but speech will create a blow in theheart of the other person.

If we say something to someone and hefeels bad, then those words are consideredabusive (upshabda). If one speaks abusivewords for no reason, even then it is harmful,and if one uses pleasant words for no reason,even then it is benefical. But if one usesnegative words, abusive words for no reason,it is injurious. If we say something to someoneand he feels hurt, all of those are consideredabusive words.

Just Understand the Liability of Speaking

The result of these harsh words that youspeak will be that their vibrations will keephurting you for quite some time. Not a singleabusive word should come out of your mouth.There should be pleasant words, but thereshould not be abusive words. And if a negative

word comes out, then violence through intent(bhaav himsa) happens within you. That isconsidered violence on the self (Atma himsa).People err on all this, and create trouble allday long.

There is liability in each word that isspoken. Therefore, if you do not know howto speak, it is better to remain silent. If youspeak in the place of religion, then there isliability in religion, and if you speak in worldlyinteractions, then there is liability in worldlyinteractions. The liability of worldly interactionsmay dissipate, but the liability in religion is veryheavy. In the matter of religion, a very heavyobstacle is placed!

Speak Sensibly or do not Speak at all

Questioner: I have a fear that whenwe understand each other through words, thenwe might also misunderstand each other.

Dadashri: But we can also (understand)correctly! We might say to the other person,“Brother, give me some milk.” If we say thatto the milkman, then what is wrong with that?You will only get milk by using words, won’tyou? Here, if you say, “Give me something,”then he might give you yogurt. He will onlygive whatever he has! So who told you thatyou could be misunderstood through yourwords?

Questioner: But a lot of fights happenthrough words.

Dadashri: Fights continue to happendue to the unfolding of karma, but stopspeaking negatively. Keep the matter toyourself; stop speaking in the home and outside.The world has arisen through words. Oncewords come to a stop, the world will come toa stop. All the fights that have happened in this

world have happened due to words! Wordsshould be sweet, and if words are not sweet,then do not speak. When we speak sweetlywith those who have fought with us, then theywill become one with us the next day.

If you speak just one wrong word, thenthe fighting will begin with the other person,and at that time, if someone speaks sweetwords like, “Brother, it is like this, it is likethat,” then the fighting will stop. Therefore,speak sensibly or do not speak at all. And ifyour words do not improve, then cover yourmouth and speak, so that the other person willnot understand.

A Wound in the Heart Through WordsDoes not Heal Easily

If we are sitting happily and someonecomes and says to us, “You do not havesense.” He says this much, and that is the end,finished! Now, has he hit us with a stone?

Questioner: No.

Dadashri: They are only words. If hehas hit with a stone, then we would understandthat, ‘This man has been hurt here, that is whyhe has burning pain.’ But here, there is hurtwithout a stone.

Questioner: There is that much effectthrough words?

Dadashri: All of this is indeed the effectof that, it is indeed the effect of words. Whenthere is a blow to the heart, it does not leavefor a hundred or so lifetimes. One will say,“You have spoken such that wounds have beencreated in the heart.” This is indeed an effect!The world has indeed arisen due to the effectof words.

Have you spoken words that have led

to a blow to the heart? Had you spoken insuch a way in childhood? Oh, I am a Gnaninow, but how must I have been before? Oh,when I would speak, the other person wouldsay, “Your words have given me a migraine!”So how terrible must those words be? Theywould give the other person a migraine; itwould take time for it to leave. Despite this, Ihave arrived at this state. I had done a lot inmy past life; this has manifested as a result.

Many women say to me, “My husbandhas said something to me that has given ablow to my heart. I cannot forget it even aftertwenty-five years.” What a stone must havebeen flung through speech that those woundsdo not heal! Such blows should not be made.

Irresponsible Words Give a Blow to theOther Person

Even if the other person is old in age,another person will say to him, “You do nothave sense.” You have set out to measure hissense! Can you speak like that? Then fightswill definitely ensue! One should not speak ina way that the other person feels hurt, suchas, “You do not have sense.” A simple person,out of sheer lack of understanding, may speakin such a way and accept responsibility for it.But if it is an intelligent person, he will not takesuch a responsibility, will he! The other personwill speak negatively, but he will speakpositively. The other person will ask any sortof thing through lack of understanding, but youyourself cannot speak negatively. You yourselfare responsible.

You cannot even say, “You do notunderstand.” You can say, “Brother, think aboutit! Just think about it a little.” If you say, “Youdo not understand at all,” then what, are allthese people idiots? Do people say this or not?

Questioner: They say it. Theseintelligent people say just that; they say that,“This person does not have understanding.”

Dadashri: Yes, they speak like that. Ifwe tell the other person that, “You would notunderstand,” then that is the biggestKnowledge-obstructing karma (Gnan avarankarma). You should not say, “You would notunderstand,” but you should say, “I will helpyou understand.” If you say, “You would notunderstand,” then it will give a blow to theheart of the other person.

It Causes Pain to the Other Person andMakes You Ill

These words that come forth, they areof two types; the words that exist in this worldare of two qualities (types). Pleasant wordsmake the body free of illness, and bad wordsmake the body ill. Therefore, not a singlenegative word should be uttered. “Hey, worthlessfellow.” Now, the word ‘hey’ is not harmful.But the word ‘worthless’ is very harmful.

If you say to the wife that, “You do nothave sense,” then those words will cause herpain, and create disease within you. Then shewill say, “Where is there any worth in you!”Then the disease arises in both. Here, she islooking for his worth, and he is looking for hersense! There is this very condition everywhere!Women (wives) should not quarrel with men(husbands), because they themselves are bound(by marriage). Therefore, the settlement shouldbe brought about.

Through Harsh Words, There is a Blowto the Heart

Questioner: Many homes are such thatthey have verbal altercations, but the mind andheart are clean.

Dadashri: Now, there may be clashesthrough the speech, but it has an effect on theother person’s heart. Otherwise, if it remainssuperficial, then there is no problem. It is likethis; the one speaking may be clean in theheart and the mind, he is able to speak. Butif the one listening feels as if a stone has beenthrown, then a clash will definitely happen.Wherever the speech is bad in any way,peculiar speech, there will be a clash.

Questioner: The other person isoftentimes not affected.

Dadashri: It definitely happens! He (theother person) only makes a show, but within,all the effects happen. The mind is a verysubtle thing. Bad words will come out onoccasion, they will not refrain from affectingthe other person. Words always give a blowto the heart. Many will use such taunts thatthe heart even stops. Therefore, there are alltypes of people! Words are very disagreeable.If there were no words, then the work wouldget done. If it were not for these words,liberation would be easy. In this time cycle,there is bondage only through speech.Therefore, not a single word can be said aboutanybody.

This speech is such a thing that if it isprotected, then all the great vows (mahavrat)are encompassed.

What are the Results of Giving PainThrough Speech?

Besides, does one leave anything unsaid?The one who has given a tongue-lashing in thepast life and has sworn at peopleindiscriminately will then lose his tongue. Thenwhat happens? If the karma are lighter, thenhe will regain (his speech) after five to sevenyears. It is not written in stone or anything.

By speaking negative speech, this tongue(speech) has been lost! However much onemisuses his tongue, he will lose his tongue(faculty of speech) by that much, for five years,for ten years. It is a punishment of one kind.For someone, it might rejuvenate after twenty-five years; for another, it might not rejuvenatefor the entire lifetime. All that is punishment.

What is the Result of Hurtful Words?

Not a single bitter word should bespoken. By speaking bitter words, a lot ofstorms have brewed. The entire Mahabharat(an epic war) arose with the words, “The blindone of the blind one” (referring to Draupadi’ssarcastic remark to Duryodhan, the son of theblind king Dhritrashtra, who accidentally fellinto a reflecting pool). There was no otherparticular cause. This was the principle cause!Draupadi had said that, hadn’t she? She hadmade that sarcastic remark, hadn’t she? Now,Draupadi also received the result of that. Woulda single bitter word that is spoken refrain fromgiving result?

Questioner: All this destruction tookplace due to just one word!

Dadashri: All this has happened due tojust one word. If that word had not come out,then nothing was going to happen. Therefore,there should be a lot of control over speakingwords. One should not speak words that arehurtful to people. For this, one should ‘study’daily. Therefore, a person should take care ofthis.

Should Pain be Given By NeedlessGoading?

Oftentimes, when a boy does not learn,when he does not give answers to questions,the teacher will scold him, “Do you understand

anything? Speak, why don’t you speak; speak,you fool!” Now, the boy is attending tutoringlessons with the teacher so that he will passhis exam. But if the teacher does this, then thepoor boy becomes dull, and the teacher keepsgetting agitated. So what will the teacher’scondition be like? We, as observers, wouldsay, “This (boy) has become dull.”

‘Why are you acting crazy like this?Straighten up! Become sensible! Otherwise,you will not be of any use to your wife! Whatyou are saying is not reaching (the child), sothe poor boy has become dull.’ So, he (theteacher) keeps acting crazy, he keeps gettingagitated and says, “Speak, why don’t youspeak, you aren’t saying anything, you havebecome dumb.” And he makes him hold hisears (as a punishment)! Why do you keepdoing this, you mad man? So many teachersdo this! They hold tutoring lessons and dothis! And then say, “This boy has become aburden for me!” Hey, the boy has not becomea burden; you have become a burden for theboy! Should we not understand that this boyis dull? Therefore, we would only giveaccording to his capacity; we would not givehim more than he can take in. We would tellhim, “Memorize this poem.” Then if he doesnot say it, then there is no problem. But here,he comes up with things in his mind, “Thefool does not talk. He is dumb!” Hey, he isnot dumb. The point you are trying to getacross does not reach him. So he has becomeslow-witted, the poor boy! If you keep doingthis to him a lot, if you keep goading him,then he will get a shock. He will become likea person who has gotten an electric shock.He (the teacher) keeps goading himneedlessly!

Never hit (your) child. If he makes a

mistake, it is necessary to gently run your handover his head and make him understand. Achild will become well-behaved when you givehim love. If you want to raise a sapling, if youraise it with love, then it will grow very well.But if you water it without care, if you makean uproar, then nothing will happen. If youwanted to raise one sapling, then you wouldsay, “Oh ho ho! The sapling has grown nicely.”It will feel good! It will give nice big flowers!So then how much of an effect must there befor humans!

The Pain Arising From Making Fun ofSomeone is Extremely Perilous

Questioner: Dada, in what differentways is pain given through the use of speech?

Dadashri: In this era of the time cycle,one should not even make fun of someone.Not a single word should be spoken. Ifsomeone is fat, he should not be called ‘fat.’If someone is tall, he should not be called‘tall.’ These people have become like plastic(insensitive)! Our people will criticize anyone.Not just humans, but they will even criticizethis fruit. “This creates gas,” they will say. “Thiswill produces too much heat within.” Hey, youmay get gas from it, but others will not. Buttheir language itself is awkward, so what canbe done?

The world has arisen through speechand the world will come to an end throughspeech.

In the homes of cultured people, ofrefined people, it is not discourteous behaviorthat causes pain, but discourteous speech.Would these people throw stones at each otherin the home? No, they shoot arrows of words.Now, is it better to strike with a stone or withbiting speech?

Questioner: This is primarily what Ihave done in my entire life.

Dadashri: But you can still dopratikraman for it! I had done the same thing!And that was very wrong. I had the sameproblem. It was the intellect that wasobstructing, so what could I do? It would startrevolting, wouldn’t it! So this is the ‘advantage’of having greater intellect! That is why peoplewho make fun of others have to sufferunnecessarily.

I used to have a big habit of making funof others. Fun in the sense that it was not thekind that would cause harm to anyone, but itwould affect the other person on the inside,would it not? If we have greater intellect, thenwhere is it likely to be abused? In making funof those with less intellect! Ever since Iunderstood the danger in this, making fun ofpeople stopped. How can people be madefun of? Making fun of others is extremelydangerous, it is a fault. No one should bemade fun of.

Beware of the Effects of Making fun ofSomeone

Questioner: But what is wrong inmaking fun of people with greater intellect(buddhi)?

Dadashri: No, but someone with lessintellect will naturally not make fun of others!

If a person walks funny, our people willlaugh at him. Hey, why are you making fun ofhim? The Lord within him has understoodeverything! The Lord has been put in thiscondition, and you are making fun of him likethis? Your condition will also become like this!That is the law of nature! Therefore, bewareof such conditions.

If someone walks like this (limps) and ifwe laugh at him, make fun of him, then theLord will say, ‘Take this fruit!’ Do not makefun of any kind in this world. All these hospitalshave arisen because of making fun of others.All these legs and other limbs that do notfunction properly are the result of making funof others (in the past life). I too have faced theresult of making fun of others.

That is why ‘we’ say, “If you make funof anyone, that is very wrong. This is becauseit is considered making fun of the Lord (withinthat person). It may be a donkey, but what isit after all? It is God.” Yes, ultimately it isindeed God! God is present in every livingbeing! You cannot make fun of anyone! Whenyou laugh, then the Lord (within) will knowthat, ‘Yes, come on; I will settle the scorefrom this end.’

Innocent Amusement Does not HurtAnyone

If you speak with a loud voice, then theother person will feel hurt. Oh, if you were tojoke with someone and if he is a little weak(sensitive) and lets it go, then that is consideredatikraman (aggression toward another livingbeing through thought, speech, or action). Imake jokes, but they are innocent jokes. Iremove his ‘disease’ and make jokes to makehim stronger. There is some amusementinvolved, some joy, and he also makes someprogress. So, these jokes do not hurt anyone.Is such amusement needed or not? The otherperson will also understand that, ‘He is creatingamusement. He is not making fun of me; he iscreating amusement.

Still, there is nothing wrong in makingfun where no one feels hurt and everyone getsjoy out of it. That is called innocent amusement.

‘We’ do that even now, because the root (thehabit of making fun) does not go away, doesit? But there is only innocence in it!

Criticism is a Hindrance for Knowledgeof the Self

Questioner: Many a times, I do notsay anything to someone’s face, but afterwards,I speak behind the person’s back.

Dadashri: To speak negatively all thetime is called ninda (slander). And to pointout a person’s faults that are openly visible iscalled teeka. It means to keep harping onabout someone’s faults that are obvious or notso obvious. Only someone who is unhappywould criticize (teeka) another person;someone who is unhappy would provokeanother. A happy person would not criticizeanyone. If these unhappy people do it, then letit be, and if it makes them happy, then letthem go ahead.

To criticize someone even in the slightestis a hindrance for absolute Knowledge (kevalGnan). Oh, it is a hinderance for evenKnowledge of the Self (Atmagnan), it is ahindrance for even the right Vision (samkit).Criticism is a hinderance in every way. Thereshould not be any leisure time to do criticism.If you criticize another person, then it isconsidered devaluing him; that is a tremendousfault. There is no problem if you are not ableto support another person, but definitely donot criticize. There is no science of theabsolutely enlightened Lords (VitaragnuVignan) where there is criticism. There is noreligion there. There is no oneness at all.

viradhana (to go against another living being,leading to spiritual descent). No one shouldbe slandered, yet people commit slanderbehind other’s backs. Hey, do not commitslander. This entire environment is filled withparmanu (smallest particle of matter). It(slander) will all reach (the other person). Nota single irresponsible word about someoneshould be spoken. And if you want to speak,then say something nice. Say something withrepute; do not say something with disrepute.

There is no point in talking aboutsomeone else’s personal matters. There is aneed to understand the matter superficially. Totalk about someone else’s personal matters isconsidered slander. And slander is a sign ofgoing to a lower life-form (in the next life)! Ifyou slander someone, then you have incurreddebt, and the other person has incurred profit.Who would conduct such a business? And tocommit slander of a person is equivalent tokilling him. Therefore, do not become involvedin slander at all. Do not ever commit slanderof a person; that is indeed a crime.

One should not commit slander ofanyone. Oh, one should not even talk aboutanother person. A tremendous liability isincurred through that. Moreover, here insatsang, in the gathering with the Paramhansa(the one who separates the Self from the non-Self), there should be not be any negativeconversations about anyone. Such a big veil(avaran) comes over Knowledge (Gnan)through just one negative idea! So then howheavy a veil must come over someone whenone criticizes, slanders, mahatmas? Oneshould ‘dissolve’ (fit into) satsang just as sugardissolves into milk. It is this intellect thatinterferes within. ‘We’ know everything abouteveryone, yet ‘we’ do not say a word. By

speaking even one negative word, a big veilcomes over Knowledge (of the Self).

Indians Hurt Others by Using Mena-Tono

Questioner: There may be the desireto say something bitter to someone, but it isflipped in such a way that the person feelsthat, ‘He’s definitely saying this to me.’ Yet theperson is unable to find my fault in this.

Dadashri: On the contrary, you usetono (a vicious remark that wounds the heartof the other person, through and through)towards him, and to use tono is consideredviolence.

These sacks of intelligence know howuse tono and mena (sarcastic remarks) verywell. Have you heard them? Wouldn’t onehave made a note (nondha) of what pain wasendured through one’s own side of the family(piyar), what pain was endured through thespouse’s side of the family (saasri)? Thatwound does not heal quickly!

A tono is very big, heavy, isn’t it? Nowif we want to translate this word ‘tono’ in English,then the effort would be in vain, would it not?

Questioner: Taunt.

Dadashri: No, ‘taunt’ does not coverit. ‘Taunt’ carries no weight here. They evenuse taunts in foreign countries. This is a tono!This does not exist in foreign countries at all!This tono is such that it wounds the heartthrough and through.

Your Religion is to Make the Decision

Questioner: Earlier, you had said that,“May no one feel hurt in the slightest extentthrough this speech.” So you said, “First havea chat with the other person’s pure Soul

(Shuddhatma), then if you remain silent, thereis no problem.” So in that chat, are we tomake the decision that, ‘May no one feel hurtin the slightest extent’?

Dadashri: That intent (bhaav) is alwaysthere. You have become pure Soul, so (theintent) that, ‘May there be no hurt in theslightest extent in this world,’ will always bethere. You should say, “Say this, ‘Chandubhai’(reader should insert his/her name here). Mayno one be hurt in the slightest extent throughthis mind-speech-body.”

Things will happen in accordance withthe decision one makes. You do not have thedesire to hurt anyone in the slightest extent, doyou? You should make this decision and keepsaying over and over again that, ‘Through‘Chandubhai’s’ body, may no one feel hurt inthe slightest extent.’

Your religion (dharma) is that which youhave decided on. To keep expectationstowards another person is a fault. If you donot hurt anyone in the slightest extent, then noone will hurt you, and if they do hurt you, it isdue to a past account.

Questioner: Dada, I do have such adecision made that, ‘Whoever hurts me doesso on the basis of my past, but I do not wantto hurt them now.’

Dadashri: And you should make thedecision that, ‘May no one be hurt throughme in even the slightest extent on any account.’If the other person hurts me, then let it be, butI do not want to do so. But this should bewithin the bounds of fairness. Then if hepurposely becomes miserable, then we do nothave a solution for that. If he becomesmiserable due to lack of understanding, thenthere is no solution for that.

Pain Given Through Suspicion is a bigOffense

All these forms of taap (internal burning)that occur for humans, taap (internal burning),santaap (mental distress), paritaap (distressgiven not only to the self but also the otherperson), uttaap (creating a ruckus involvingothers); all have arisen due to suspicion(shanka). Suspicion shows everythingincorrectly. Tremendous ignorance; that iscalled suspicion. Suspicion is an interferenceof the intellect (buddhi). Those with moreintelligence (akkal) think more, have moreintellect. When a person has to suffer pain,when he truly has to suffer pain, then suspicionarises. And how much suffering must there bein (having) suspicions! Therefore, to becomesuspicious in any way is the greatest fault.

Questioner: Please explain what kindof a loss is incurred through suspicion.

Dadashri: Suspicion itself is pain! Overtpain! Can that be considered a minor loss? Ifone sinks deeper into suspicion, then therewill be pain that is equivalent to death.

Questioner: Will it feel like a spear?

Dadashri: A spear is all right, butsuspicion has even greater pain. A spear willmerely jab and cause uneasiness, whereassuspicion will kill a person, it will give rise tomental distress (santaap). Therefore, do notharbor suspicions.

To keep suspicion spoils your innerintent; you have stuck your hand in that.Therefore, it only gives pain. Do not allowsuspicion to arise, keep vigilance. If you harborsuspicions, then consider it death! Suspicion istremendous ignorance.

When suspicion arises, one will definitely

be in mental distress. He will be in tremendouspain; he will have endless pain. This is becausethe Lord has said that, “Suspicion is the biggestfault,” and it immediately gives rise to pain.That suspicion even gives pain to the otherperson. Suspicion is the cause of people’s pain.It is nothing but pain, pain, and pain. That iswhy I keep telling you to understand this talk!

How Painful are Accusations!

Everything is readily available, but peopledo not know how to enjoy it, they do notknow the method of enjoying it. Thebusinessmen of Mumbai will sit to dine ontheir big dining table, but after completing theirmeal, (they will say to their wives), “You didthis, you did that, you keep burning my heartfor no reason.” Hey! Would anybody burn itfor no reason? They burn it lawfully; they donot burn it unlawfully. People burn this wood,but do they burn a wooden cabinet? Theyonly burn that which is to be burned. Yet peoplemake accusations. They have no awareness atall. Humankind has become unaware(bebhaan); otherwise, how could there beaccusations in the home? In the past, peoplein the home would never accuse each other.Oh, they would not do so even when it wasappropriate to do so. They would know that,‘If I make an accusation, then the other personwill feel hurt.’ And in the current era of thetime cycle (Kaliyug), people go aroundwaiting for the chance. How can there bematabheda (the distance that develops dueto difference of opinion) in the home? If thereis matabheda, then what else of value is leftin your life?

People are in Pain Because ofMatabheda

People are going around trying to get

rid of the matabheda of India. There shouldbe no matabheda within you first. Ifmatabheda does happen within, then therehas been a blunder. Then there will be ‘tension,’then there will be ‘compression.’ There will becompression, right?

Questioner: What does matabhedawithin mean? Please explain using an example.

Dadashri: Now, if you are greetingsomeone, if you see someone, then you willsay, “Come, come.” And the voice within willsay, ‘What is the need for this useless fellow?’The voice within will say this. It will saysomething obnoxious. Does this happensometimes?

Questioner: Forget sometimes, ithappens pretty much all the time. Afteraccidently greeting the person, then it happensthat, ‘Why did I invite him to sit here!’

Dadashri: So this matabheda exists inevery home; there is fighting and matabhedawithin. Here, they have decreased (for you)after I have given this Knowledge (Gnan).Otherwise, before, the fights, battles lasted allday long within. One person will say, “Hey,have I done wrong to you, that you all keepfighting in the home?” To which another personwill respond, “You do not know what youhave done wrong?” So you do not even knowhow to live this life? You live in agitation? Youare that much of a mooah (a mortal, one whois dying second by second)? Then he will say,“No, I am married.” Then mooah, you havea wife, yet your agitation has not left? Shouldthe agitation not leave? I had thought all thisthrough. Should people not think about all this?This is a very big, vast world, but peoplebelieve that this world exists within their veryown rooms, and even if they believe that to be

the world it would be fine, but even there hequarrels with his wife!

Pain has Arisen due to the DifferentOpinions of ‘Mine’ and ‘Yours’

Now is this not a lack of understanding?What do you feel? They used to be united;that has broken, and separation has arisen. Soeven with the wife, he uses words like ‘mine’and ‘yours.’ He accuses her, “You’re like this,and you’re like that!” Then she will retort,“You are not sensible yourself!” So even inthe home, they use ‘mine’ and ‘yours.’

(They now use,) ‘Me and you, me andyou, me and you,’ whereas in the past, theyused to use ‘us.’ ‘We are both one, we arelike this, we are like that. This is ours.’ Thathas turned into ‘mine’ and ‘yours’! Nowbecause it has become ‘mine’ and ‘yours,’rivalry ensues. To what extent does the rivalryreach? The battle of Haldighati (historical battlebetween the Mughals and Rajputs) will begin!That rivalry is a means for inviting destruction!Therefore, do not allow rivalry to occur withanyone. How can one remain in worldly life,worldly life that entangles? How can one livewhere there is ‘me and you’?

Lack of Closure Cultivates Pain

If there is matabheda (the distancethat develops due to difference of opinion)in the home, then one does not know howto bring closure to it. If matabheda ariseswith the children, then he does not knowhow to bring closure to it, and he keepsgetting entangled.

Questioner: The husband will just say,“The wife has to bring about settlement, I willnot!”

Dadashri: Yes, so if the wife brings

about settlement and you do not, then youhave crossed the limit. If you were a man,then you would speak so nicely that the wifewould become pleased, and in this way, youwould move forward. Instead, you carry thison for fifteen days, for months; that will notdo. As long as there is no closure in the mindof the other person, you will have difficulties.Therefore, bring about settlement for it.

How can you accept matabheda in thehome? The wife says, “I am yours,” and thehusband says, “I am yours,” so then why thematabheda? As problems between the twoof you increase, separation will begin to form.Once the problem gets solved, then there willnot be separation. And problems will arise foreveryone; it is not like it happens to you only.For whoever has gotten married, suchproblems will not refrain from arising.

Pain has Been Given Through Insistence

A person who is right gives a lot of painto other people, so he only gets pain. A personwho is right gives a lot of pain to everyone bysaying, ‘I am right.’ Therefore, one should notspeak with insistence (agraha). To speak withinsistence is poison! The scripture writers havesaid, “If you have done khench (subtle pull ofinsistence) to a greater extent, it is untruth,and if you have not done khench, it is truth.’’If you want to establish the truth as truth, thenit will become untruth. You are trying toestablish the truth in such a world?

Therefore, let go of the trouble withtruth and untruth. Those with such troublewill go to court. But we are not sitting in anycourt. We are to make sure that no one ishurt. If the truth that we speak hurts the otherperson, then we do not know how to speakit at all.

Pain is Given Through Being Obstinateand Sullen

Even if (‘our’) talk is such that it pacifiesthe heart, one does not accept it; he acts onlyaccording to his own intellect (mata). ‘We’do not say anything to anyone; ‘we’ do notpressure anyone. Yet if ‘we’ do say somethingto someone and he does not accept it, is thatnot considered obstinacy (aadayee)? He wantsto go according to his own understanding,doesn’t he?

These people will say, “I will not drinktea made by you.” Oh ho ho, then whose teawill you drink? The husband will intimidate her(the wife) like this. What does he say? “Youruined the tea, so I will not drink tea made byyou again.” He intimidates the poor woman;he becomes obstinate.

It is when one sulks (risavoo) that onebehaves obstinately! A man’s wife had comesulking at a railway station. The man told her,“Get on the train! The train will leave, it willbe night soon.” She still did not get on, andthe man too was left stranded. Twelve trainsmay leave in front of a person who is sulking.If one finds the slightest thing unsettling, onewill become obstinate. One just needs to findit unsettling. So much obstinacy! That is thereason for the pain!

Through Manipulative Tantrums, OneCreates Trouble for Others

Questioner: To make someone dowhat you want (dharyu karvu); does thatcount as obstinacy (aadayee)?

Dadashri: Then what else? If it is notobstinacy, then what is it? And he sulks,ultimately even has a manipulative tantrum(tragu), and gets the person to do what he

wants. Have you never seen a manipulativetantrum? You will get a fever if you see one!If someone has a manipulative tantrum, even ifyou do not have a fever, your temperature willrise by three degrees!

Questioner: What is a tragu?

Dadashri: Tragu is when everybodyelse is pressured into something against theirdesire, and are required to keep saying ‘yes.’They have to yield just as they would to apolice officer. That is referred to as a tragu.

Tragu means to behave in such a waythat the other person becomes frightened, andaccepts the terms that have been placed. Hewill do anything to get his way. He will banghis head, he will bang it like this, jump around,cry, wail. That which scares us from all anglesis referred to as a tragu. One will do a traguwhen he does not get his way. When he doesit to get his way, it is called a tragu. Whenone creates drama to get his way, to frightenothers, that is called a tragu. An onslaught ofcommotion, commotion!

What is nature like? It does not allowany living being to do what it wants, in theslightest extent. But the one who does not hurtanyone in the slightest extent through the mind,speech, or conduct, nature gives such a personall the power to do what he wants.

The Crazy ego Gives Pain to the OtherPerson

Questioner: Does the ego of, ‘I amindeed right’ mean to have it done accordingto one’s own will (dharyu karavavu)?

Dadashri: No, it does not mean to havedone according to one’s own will. Many peopledo according to their own will. Ego is thatwhich makes one appear crazy; that is called

crazy ego. Appropriate worldly interactions arenot seen. All these people are engaging inworldly interactions; in that, they are notconsidered wrong, they are not consideredcrazy. But that which is considered crazy iswhat people refer to as ego. That ego showssomething entirely different, compared to therest of the world.

Questioner: Does the person himselfnot know about it?

Dadashri: There is no awareness atall! Forget knowing about it; there is noawareness at all! There is no awareness of,‘How crazy am I behaving,’ or ‘What am Isaying.’ Only then would such ego express.There may be fifty people sitting here, butone person does the wrong thing, so peoplewill immediately say, “This egotistical fool!”There should be appropriate worldlyinteractions, those that everyone will accept,agree with. Whatever work you do, everyoneshould say, “Brother, you did good work.”What should the ego be like? There shouldbe ego that everyone accepts. This is crazyego; people do not like it.

All this talk about, ‘I will do this andI will do that’; now, he cannot do any of itand it is the ego that speaks. These are allcrazy egos that have been filled. The onewho is able to do so would not even expressegoism.

Questioner: But how can it be knownthat this is crazy ego?

Dadashri: The crazy ego is everywhere,and it makes one wander around in intoxication.It needs to be identified. If someone tells me,‘Dadaji, you have no sense,’ then I willunderstand; my crazy ego will not arise there.So, I will not feel hurt at all! His ego will hurt

him, how can it hurt me? That which givespain is all crazy ego.

The Crazy ego Shows That Which isRight as Wrong

There is crazy ego in everybody. Thatcrazy ego shows that which is right as wrong.If you have six or seven files at home, then thecrazy ego will show only the wrong for allseven of them. Vitarag Vignan (Science ofthe absolute Self) says to win over the prakruti(relative self) of the people at home. Whatdoes winning over mean? That they all becomevery happy with you. Win them over in a waythat they do not feel hurt. The outside worlddoes not have to be won over; win over theseven files that you have at home. The worldhas already been won over! If you abandonyour files and become an ascetic, you will notachieve anything. That file will have to be wonover. That file has indeed come for you.

Crazy ego does very bad things. It doesnot allow one to understand anything at all. Itkeeps on spoiling things. He (the ego) seesthe fault of the ‘file’ (other people) and seeshimself as flawless; (he sees) that, ‘I am verywise.’ He will protect his own faults. He willtell himself that, ‘No, it is not your fault.’ Sohe defends his self on his own. He is thelawyer, he is the judge, and he is the accused.Now tell me, what will be the outcome? Whatwill the judgment be if he is the accused, lawyer,and judge? And here, the other person is seenas the one at fault, and he has protected hisself!

Pain is Given Through Protecting andAttacking

There is definitely the matter of protectingthe prakruti (mind-body-speech complex), but

they also attack, they also attack others. Sothis tremendous ‘I-ness’ (potapanu) needs tobe removed! To protect the prakruti is ‘I-ness.’ Do our mahatmas do this? Alas, that iswhy it (the prakruti) does not become naturaland spontaneous (sahaj). Here, when someonegives the slightest insult, then one immediatelyprotects his self, if someone does somethingelse, he does protection there. All that doesnot allow naturalness to arise! When that (‘I-ness’) with attacks goes away, then later thereis (‘I-ness’) with protection, that is called true‘I-ness.’ Otherwise, until then, it is allconsidered intent with violence (himsakbhaav). And when ‘I-ness’ associated withattacks leaves, thereafter, ‘I-ness’ associatedwith protection begins to leave. What good is‘I-ness’ that hurts someone else?

Interfering ego Causes Pain

Do not interfere (dakhal) with a runningtrain. It will run on its own. Nothing is goingto make it come to a stop.

Questioner: When people say, “He hasinterfered,” is that the meaning of dakhal?

Dadashri: One should not interfere atall. That is called dakhal. When interference(dakhal) happens, it leads to disorder(dakho). Whatever is happening, you haveto let it happen. If the train you are on isrunning, and there is some rattling noise, thenat that moment, should you pull theemergency chain and start screaming? No,let it continue to run.

Questioner: If there is some squeakingnoise, even then they will go to put some oil.

Dadashri: Yes, they will. There is noneed to interfere. Keep Seeing what happens.And if ‘we’ (the Gnani Purush) were to

interfere, what would be our condition?Whatever happens let it happen.

Questioner: Do we have to let ithappen even if it is wrong?

Dadashri: Would you allow the rightor the wrong thing to happen? People do nothave the energy to run anything at all. This isnothing but ego when one says, “I will definitelynot allow that which is wrong to happen.” Onthe contrary, through that, disputes happen,disorder happens. If someone does the wrongthing, then you should make him understand;otherwise, remain silent.

By Using the Authority to Reprimand,one Crushes the Heart

Questioner: If the other person is beingdifficult, should we not do the same?

Dadashri: You are not to look at thatwhich is of the other person. That is hisresponsibility. If some outlaws confront youand you behave like an outlaw too, then it isa different matter. However, there you just handeverything over to them, don’t you? What isthe point in being powerful with the weak?What really counts is that despite beingpowerful, you become humble when dealingwith the weak.

Here, the one with authority keepscrushing the one under him. The one whomisuses his authority will lose his authority, andon top of that, he will not get a human life (inthe future). If we reprimand a person who isunder our authority for just one hour, then anaccount will be bound for an entire lifetime.

Through Intense Contempt, the MindBleeds

not have intense contempt (tarchhod) towardsanyone! Who are you having tarchhodtowards? Towards God Himself! This isbecause God resides in everyone. The insultdoes not reach the person; it reaches God(within)! All the effects of worldly life reach allthe way to God (within that person).Therefore, do things that God accepts, thenyou will not look bad. No one can go tomoksha (final liberation) by having tarchhodtowards a single living being.

Tarchhod is a very terrible thing. Throughthis sword, the body bleeds, but through intensecontempt, the mind bleeds! Tarchhod closesall doors of the other person. The door ofwhoever you have expressed tarchhodtowards will remain closed forever. He willsay, “I will let everyone else go, but I will notlet you go.” If you ask him for his forgivenessfor your tarchhod, then everything willdisappear.

Look at this; this is life, people fight.They fight one another. They do not havevisible fights, they have internal fights. Theydo not fight externally. External fights last alifetime. It ends in one lifetime, whereasinternal fights continue for hundreds oflifetimes.

Shouldn’t Your Goal be in Your Aware-ness?

This world remains standing due toenmity (veyr). If you win by reprimandingsomeone, then that is not considered winning.Besides, the solution will come through humility.How wise were the Vitarag Lords (absolutelyenlightened Lords)! Even if a small child wouldreprimand them, they would still be joyful andtalk to him. This is because they want to gotowards freedom, they want to go to moksha

(final liberation); do they have the desire to sitaround with these people again? Should Yourobjective be in Your awareness or not? ‘Your’goal is definitely in Your awareness, isn’t it?And for that reason, a solution should bebrought forth. Otherwise, if you reprimandsomeone and he gives in at that time, he doesnot give in internally, he holds onto it inside, hebinds enmity.

The Crooked one Binds Enmity for aHundred Thousand Lifetimes!

No matter how crazy a person speaks,if we give a response at that time, then nomatter how beautiful it (the response) is, if theslightest (negative) vibration is given off, that isnot acceptable. The other person has the libertyto say everything he wants; he is independent.Right now, if those children throw pieces ofbricks, then are they not free to do so? Aslong as the police officer does not stop them,they are indeed free. The other living being(jiva) may do whatever it desires. If he (theother person) behaves crookedly and keepsenmity, then he will not let us go to mokshafor a hundred thousand lifetimes! That is why‘we’ tell you, “Be cautious. If you encountera crooked person, do whatever you can,appease him, but become free from him! It isworth being free from this world.”

In this world, it is not worth having asingle enmity with anyone. If the other personsays something wrong, then we should let go,but we should not bind enmity. Otherwise, evenafter we have died, he will not let go.

Resolve it by Bringing About a Solution

If you have provoked someone evenslightly, then he will make the niyanu (aphenomenon where one’s inner intent is sostrong that all his merit karma are expended

towards acquiring only that) to take revenge.These people are such that (they will say),“Let all my penance go towards this, but Iwill destroy him!” They will make such aniyanu. Therefore, do not bind enmity. If youmake a mistake, then ask for forgiveness,and bring about a solution for that mistake,but bring that case to rest. This world remainsstanding due to enmity. Therefore, if enmityremains anywhere, then we will grantforgiveness, ask for forgiveness, even bowdown to that person, but we will not bindenmity with him, and clear the enmity suchthat he becomes happy (and will feel), ‘Nobrother, now there is no problem.’ Bring aboutresolution with him so that he does notobstruct you.

Questioner: So if those who desire tobring about a solution accept this, then willthere be a resolution?

Dadashri: Yes. Oh, I even say, “I havegone mad.” If we say, “My mind has becomea little crazy,” then he will let us go. Do wewant to marry him? So we bring about aresolution and move on. All we want is thepath where enmity will not be bound!

It Does not Take Long to Bind EnmityUpon Hurting Someone

This world is such that if we greet andtreat (others) in a nice way, then it will allowus to proceed further. Otherwise, if weprovoke someone, then he will not even letthat go, and will say, “Wait until I get evenwith you.” (These people) Will bind enmity ina short time. It does not take long for them tobind enmity.

Questioner: Just show a couple ofplaces in this world where enmity does not getbound.

Dadashri: You should behave such thatenmity does not get bound. I conduct in away that enmity does not get bound.

Questioner: So you suffer loss yourself,but enmity must be let go?

Dadashri: Yes, in any way; by sufferingloss, by becoming entrapped, but behave in away that enmity does not get bound. I haveconducted my self that way from the beginning.I have never had any matabheda (the distancethat develops due to difference of opinion)with anyone. What is the reason for this?Nobility of mind; I would incur a loss, but Iwould not allow enmity to be created. Whatdo our people do at that time? When therehas been a loss, they will cut off the relationshipwith the other person, and then form arelationship with another person. They will cutoff the relationship with this person for a lossof two hundred rupees, and then bind nothingbut enmity. You will get the two hundred rupeesagain, but to ruin relationships in this way is atremendous fault.

Seize This Final Opportunity

The thing that you got cheated on, thatthing is going to be sitting unused, and you aregoing to bind enmity with these people for noreason. Now, if you have two rupees ofsomeone’s, then he will keep remembering itfor the rest of his life that, ‘I still need to getmy two rupees back.’ Now what is going tohappen to this? The entire life, the focusremains only on that. And in those days, theworth of two rupees was not what it is today.What I am saying is that it is even worth goingto moksha having been cheated by this world.This is because bad times are coming. Thenfor eighty thousand years, people will not havethe opportunity to look up; they will all live

amongst such terrible pain, agony. That is why‘we’ say, “Beware, beware!” Don’t I say,“Seize this final opportunity…”

To not Hurt Anyone is a Major Principle

This is one’s own egoism that, ‘This ofmine is right, and that is wrong.’ What isreferred to as ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ in worldlyinteractions is all egoism. Nevertheless, whatis right or wrong in worldly interactions? Thingsthat are harmful to humans or other livingbeings, harmful to worldly interactions, harmfulto society, harmful to small living beings orother living beings, that is what we havereferred to as wrong.

It is regarded as truth in worldlyinteractions (vyavahar) where things are taken,acquired, without hurting any living being;speech that does not hurt any living being isspoken; conduct is such that it does not hurtany living being. That is the original truth; thatis the original truth of worldly interactions.Therefore, to not hurt anyone is the highest ofprinciples (siddhant). Hurt is not given throughspeech, hurt is not given through conduct, andthere cannot be a bad thought about someonein the mind. That is the highest of truth; it istruth in worldly interactions. Even then, it isnot actually the real truth. This is the ultimatetruth in worldly interactions!

To Give Mental Pain is ViolenceAgainst the Self

Therefore, (maintain yourself) such thatno living being is tormented; no living being ishurt in the slightest extent. There should notbe any violence towards any living being. Andthere should not be any negative opinion aboutpeople at all. If an opinion has been formedeven for an enemy, then that is major violence.To get agitated with a member of the

household is greater violence than to slaughtera goat. This is because to get agitated isviolence against the self.

That is why the Lord had said that first,do such that you do not do kashaya (anger-pride-deceit-greed). This is because kashayais the greatest of violence. To give someonemental pain (mansik dukha), to get angry(krodha) at someone, to get irritated (gusso),all that is considered violent intent (himsakbhaav). That is referred to as violence againstthe self (atma himsa); it is referred to as causalviolence (bhaav himsa). If effective violence(dravya himsa) happens, so be it, but do notallow causal violence to happen. Instead, thesepeople stop effective violence, but causalviolence keeps happening.

Nurture the Intent of Non-Violence

Non-violent intent (bhaav ahimsa)means that the intent of, ‘I want to kill a livingbeing,’ should never arise and the intent, ‘Iwant to give pain to a living being,’ shouldnever arise. There only needs to be the intent,not practice (kriya) of, ‘May no living beingbe hurt in the slightest extent through the mind-speech-body.’ Only the intent needs to bedone. How are you going to save (other livingbeings) through actions? Hundreds ofthousands of lives die with each breath that istaken, and here, there are swarms of livingbeings that are colliding, and they die throughthese collisions. This is because for them, weappear to be like large rocks. And (they feel)that, ‘This large rock has collided with me.’

Make the Decision to Reach the FinalStage

The entire world dwells within four typesof bhaav (intent) : 1. Violent intent (himsakbhaav), 2. Pain-giving intent (pidakarak

bhaav), 3. Contemptuous intent (tiraskarbhaav), and 4. Dislike-filled intent (abhaavbhaav).

Violent intent refers to the intent ofviolence of the slightest extent; of harmingothers, of getting angry at someone, of hurtingsomeone, of giving pain. Those (intents) shouldleave first. Once violent intent leaves, pain-giving intent should leave. Violent intent hasleft amongst higher societies and pain-givingintents remain. They do kashaya all day long!That should leave. Contempt naturally remainsfor humans. One who has attachment (raag)definitely has abhorrence (dwesh).Abhorrence means contempt. Oncecontemptuous intent leaves, the fourth intent,dislike-filled intent, should leave. Dislike-filledintent is when your own faults are gone, butdue to the mistake of others, dislike ariseswithin you. What a big fault that is! Mahatmas(Self-realized ones in Akram Vignan) shouldreach the fourth stage.

After climbing these four steps, LordMahavir had climbed the fifth step, which isthe final platform of Vitarag Vignan (Scienceof the absolute Self).

A ‘Project’ Worth Deciding on

These humans have not learned how tolive life at all; the key to living has indeed beenlost. That is why these people needlessly keeptaking beatings. In this world, there is no bapo(father figure) who is superior to you; you arecompletely independent. Your ‘project’(projection, intent, for the next life) is alsoindependent, but your ‘project’ should be suchthat no living being is hurt to the slightest extentthrough you. Make your ‘project’ very big,make it (as big as) the entire world.

Questioner: Is that possible?

Dadashri: Yes. Mine (my project) isvery big. I live in such a way that no livingbeing is hurt by me. I have not come to makeanyone miserable. ‘We’ have come to make(others) happy.

Questioner: But that is not possible forothers, is it?

Dadashri: It is not possible, but thatdoes not mean that you carry out your projectin such a way that all other living beings arehurt.

You should not hurt any human being atall. You may feel that he has amisunderstanding, but he believes that theunderstanding that he has is correct! How canhe be hurt through us? Shouldn’t somediscipline be maintained such that you are ableto carry out the project that others are hurt inthe smallest extent possible? I am not tellingyou to do what is completely impossible. Painarises today in the form of an effect, yet peopleare such that they keep nurturing the causesfor that very pain. It is beneficial if one doesnot allow new causes to arise in the midst ofpain that arises due to past causes.

Only one who is in Pain Gives Pain

As long as there is happiness within, noperson will spoil anything for anyone. Only aperson who is in pain will spoil things for others.If one is suffering pain, he will provoke others.A happy person will make the effort to makeothers happy.

Questioner: If one is not happy himself,then how can he give happiness to others?

Dadashri: That is indeed why he cannotgive it! But there may be one such person,one person in ten million, who gives his ownhappiness to others; he will go to the celestial

realm (devgati). In the past, there used to bemany such people. Out of a hundred, therewere two to three percent, five percent. Rightnow, out of ten million, there might be two tofour (such people). Right now, they areconsidered wise if they do not give pain toothers. If one does not hurt others at all, thenhe will be reborn as a human again.

Anger-pride-deceit-greed should besuch that they are not hurtful to anybody. Aslong as they are not hurtful to others, they onlyhurt the self, as long as there is that much ofa limit, there is the path of liberation.

No one can Hurt Others and go toLiberation

If someone is hurt by us in even theslightest extent, the case remains pending inthe court (of nature)! As long as there aredisputes in the court, one will not be free.These people have all had disputes in the court.Now, if you want to resolve the disputes incourt, then if someone has cursed at you, letit go, and do not curse at anyone. This isbecause if you make a claim, even then thecase will continue on. If you become acomplainant, then you will have to look for alawyer. Now we want to become free fromhere, we do not like it here; that is why weare to pave the way, we are to let go ofeverything!

With pain given in the slightest extent toanyone, no living being (jiva) can go tomoksha. This is regardless of whether he is asaint or anything else. Even if only his discipleis being hurt, the saint will still be restrainedhere, there is no option!

Yet one who is ignorant of the Self(aGnani) is indeed hurting everyone else.Even if he is not hurting others, the intent of

hurting prevails. Ignorance is violence andKnowledge (Gnan) is non-violent intent(ahimsak bhaav).

Take Everyone’s Pain for one Lifetime

If we create an atmosphere that hurtssomeone, then conflict will arise for us. Howcan someone be considered aware (jagrut),when another is hurt even slightly? Creating astate that is free of conflict is considered majorprogress as the Self (purushartha). If yougive pain to someone externally, then pain willstart arising from within (for you)! Such is thescience of the absolutely enlightened Lords(Vitarago). If you accept the pain given toyou by others for one lifetime, then it will makeup for infinite lifetimes!

Bring About a Solution Somehow orOther

One who wants to go to moksha shouldnot have, ‘This should be done, and this shouldnot be done.’ Somehow or another, bring aboutsettlement and move on. One does not holdon there, he brings about a solution somehowor another.

The Real Dharma is to Reach the Goal

We do not become happy having hurtothers. God resides in every single living being.Therefore, if you torment any living being inany way, if you hurt them, then it will give riseto adharma (that which is against the benefitof living beings). And if you give happiness toany living being, then it will give rise to dharma(that which is wholesome). The result ofadharma is in opposition to your desire, andthe result of dharma is in accordance withyour desire.

Religion (dharma) is not sitting in frontof the idol of any God; that is not called religion.

Religion is to reach our goal; that is calledreligion. Maintain an obliging nature; decidethat, ‘Now I only want to oblige others.’ Thenthere will be change in you. Decide that, ‘I donot want to behave wildly. Even if the otherperson is behaving wildly, even then I do notwant behave that way.’ Then it is possible forit to happen. Can it not happen? From thetime you make that decision, will there be somechanges or not?

Questioner: But it is difficult.

Dadashri: No, even if it is difficult,we still make the decision. This is becauseyou are a human being, and you are fromIndia. Are you ordinary? You are adescendant of the ancient sages (rushimuni)!(Infinite) Energies lie within you. They lieveiled, so what use is it for you? If you makea decision that, ‘I absolutely want to do this,’based on what I am telling you, then it willdefinitely materialize. Whichever energies youwant to ask for, ask for them from this Dadaa hundred times each day. You will get themall.

The Result Will Indeed Come Based onthe Firm Resolution

(We should) Live in worldly life in sucha way that we do not cause anyone pain. Ourhighest goal should be that no living being ishurt in the slightest extent through us.

If someone is hurt through you, then hisliberation will be obstructed, but your liberationwill also be obstructed. Therefore, pain shouldnot be given to anyone. Do not ever havehopes of being happy in even the slightest extentafter giving pain to anyone. Therefore, see tohow happiness will prevail for everyone. Seeto nothing else.

From today onwards, decide on theoutlook of not giving pain to anyone, (decide)that, ‘I do not want to give the slightest painto anyone in this world.’ If you make thedecision that, ‘Through the mind-speech-body, I do not want to torment anyone in theslightest extent,’ that is what will start upwithin. It will start up within in accordancewith the decision you make. It will start up inaccordance with whatever your firm resolution(nischaya) is.

Asking for Energy, we Purify the Intent

Now, we are to erase any wrongthoughts that come, and keep only the intentfor the salvation of the world. Our intentionshould be that, ‘In this world, may no livingbeing be hurt through our mind-speech-body.’It is only considered a profit if there is theintent to not hurt any living being in this worldin the slightest extent.

Ultimately, Your Purity Will be Needed

The flawless vision has now arisen forus, so we should not point out anyone’s faults.Why point out faults? Has anyone becomehappy by pointing out faults? Does anyoneactually become happy?

It is only considered a profit if you cansee your faults one after another. This entiresatsang is for you to see all of your ownfaults, and only when you can see your ownfaults will they depart. When will faults be seen?When you become the Self (Swayam), whenYou become the form as the Self (Swa-swarupa). The one who sees more of his faultsis elevated. When complete impartiality arisestowards this body, towards this speech,towards this conduct, only then will You beable to see all of Your own mistakes.

If you deserve a thing, you will get thatthing without any effort. So, your purity isrequired. What is needed in your purity? (Theintention of,) ‘May no living being in the worldbe hurt by me. If anyone hurts me, it is inaccordance with the law (of nature). ‘May noone be hurt in the slightest extent through me’;if you understand just this statement, then it ismore than enough.

By Nurturing the Intent, Liberate YourSelf

That is why ‘we’ tell everyone, “In themorning, before leaving home, if you do notknow anything else, just say, ‘May no livingbeing in this world be hurt in the slightest extentthrough the mind-speech-body.’ Say this fivetimes regularly before going out.” Then I takeall other responsibilities. The otherresponsibilities are mine! Go; if you do notknow anything else, then I will take care of it!Just say this much! Then if someone is hurt, Iwill take care of it. But just say this much. Isthere a problem with this?

Questioner: There is no problem withthis.

Dadashri: Definitely say this. Then hewill say, “What if I end up hurting the otherperson?” You do not have to worry aboutthat. I will take care of it later on in the highcourt (of nature). That is for the lawyer totake care of, isn’t it? I will do it all for you.Just speak this sentence of mine five times in

the morning! Is there a problem in this? Is itburdensome? If you heartily recall DadaBhagwan (the Lord within) and say it (thissentence), then what is the problem?

Ask Dada for Energy, Genuinely Fromthe Heart

It should be spoken five times, but itshould be spoken in the same way (with thepresence of the chit) as when money is beingcounted. How should it be spoken? Just asthe chit (inner faculty of knowledge and vision)is present when money is being counted, itshould be kept the same way. What theantahkaran (the mind-intellect-chit-complex)is like when counting money, that is how itshould be kept when speaking.

Questioner: We indeed do that.

Dadashri: Good, just do that. There isnothing else worth doing in this world. (Keepthe intent that,) ‘May no living being be hurt inthe slightest extent through (this) mind-speech-body,’ so then the entire book (account) iscleared. ‘We’ give you such understanding.The understanding through which ‘we’ havebecome free, the understanding through which‘we’ have become free from bondage, theunderstanding through which ‘we’ have not hadtension for the past twenty-seven years, theunderstanding through which ‘we’ havebecome independent; ‘we’ are teaching youthis understanding.
