'The Dirt' -Motley Crue

It will be hard to believe the members of Motley Crue are still alive, let

alone making music, after you read their escapades in this book. The Dirt

is packed with nonstop debauchery and amazing stories of decadence. From

their early days on the Sunset Strip to their implosion in the late '90s,

this is a fascinating book.

'Hell Bent For Leather: Confessions Of A Heavy Metal Addict' -Seb HunterHell Bent For Leather is very similar to Fargo Rock City, except it's from a British perspective. Hunter is also a musician, so he has that added perspective. It's a wry and funny tale, but also filled with tonsof metal information.

'Fargo Rock City' -Chuck Klosterman

Klosterman grew up in small town North Dakota as a heavy metal fan. This

is a combination autobiography and lesson in metal history. The stories

are compelling, sometimes funny and always entertaining.

4:16 p.m. Message from Mark:

Subject: Interview“Les, I need to know whether or not you are going to be able to send me an interview this month?! If you can’t no worries I just

need to know ASAP so I can finish it up. Thanks.”

Shit, is it really that time again already? How did I forget that? Well, what the fuck am I going to do now…

4:29 p.m. My reply:

“Hey Mark, sorry man I pretty much dropped the ball this month.

I got a job at the college and I’m starting up a record label and I’m working on a live solo act right now. I just got side tracked.

I’m planning on hitting that Derelict show tonight; I’ll see if I can talk to someone…”

“This shit just got tight!” I thought. Then I realized that this shit

just got fun! It was time to step it up and go high tech all up in here…

4:57 p.m. London drugs:

The chick behind the counter was HOT! I could just see a bunch

of heavy ink peaking out from under her uniform sleeve. I got her

interview By: Les Porterto show me the digital recorders. I smiled and nodded. She giggled and touched my arm… I’m going to have to go back there and get

her number.

5:25 p.m. My buddy Jay’s house:

I quickly went to work familiarizing myself with the basic workings of my new recording device. Many beers hindered this

simple task and I suddenly found myself with no time and very little understanding of how this strange device actually worked…

8:05 p.m. The beer store:

I know this chick is going to remember me from a couple hours

ago…

8:25 p.m. Outside Third on 3rd.

I ran into J Pahl Gyibaaw out side the venue. I love this guy, he is so fucking mellow. I spent the next few minutes joining him in intentionally mispronouncing the names of the bands we were

about to see. For some reason this was quite hilarious at the time….. ELEPHANT DRUM!

8:50 p.m. Inside Third on 3rd.

I wandered into the middle of a nice heavy set by Williams Lakes own Embracing Torment. Heavy grooved out riffs filled my ears

and my head just automatically started bobbing. After their set I got a chance to talk to these guys in between blackouts…

Les: Alright for the record tell us who you are, what you do in

your band, and what you do when you’re not playing in this band.

Jeff: Well we’re Embracing Torment! I do Lead Vocals and guitar and when I’m not playing’ music I’m driving a big ass haul

truck. Mike: I play Bass, and I just spend time with my family when

I’m not doing this.

Ernie: Drums and I spend time with the family and work at the Saw Mill.

Whalen: Rhythm Guitar and by day I sell auto parts.

Jeff: I spend time with my family too!

Les: Tell me what the hell is up with Williams Lake?

Ernie: Not too much right now. We are trying to set up more

shows and get the people coming out, and we’re hoping to get metal taking off!

Les: so are you guys the only metal band in Williams Lake right

now?

Whalen: No, there is also a younger group called Renegade.

Les: So, do you see yourselves really pushing your scene and putting on lots of shows?

Mike: we’re really trying to push it as much as possible. We are

really trying to get the scene there going. We want to talk to every band coming in from out of town. We really want to put on as

many shows as possible!

Les: Is this one of your guy’s first road shows?

Jeff: This is our first road show!

Les: Crazy! So how is the P.G. metal scene treating you guys?

Jeff: So far so good!

Les: Is there a recording planned for you guys in the near future?

Jeff: Yeah there is; we have a home studio that we are going to use. We tried another studio, but it wasn’t working out.

Les: So what’s next? Are you going on the road?

Jeff: Eventually we would like to go on the road. We really want

to get the metal scene going in Williams Lake first!

Les: The B.C. metal world is pretty small when you get right down to it. Who are some other B.C. bands you want to share the

stage with?

Jeff: Well we shared the stage with Gyibaaw actually, and we are hoping to hook up with Deadriver Wasteland pretty soon and

Titan Z from Vancouver is good, and Unleash the Archers.

Les: Where can metal fans find you guys?

Myspace.com/embracingtorment

Les: Who do you want to give shout out’s too?

Jeff: That dude that was singing along, I don’t know what the hell, but that was fuckin awesome! And, Derelict!

9:55 p.m. Behind Third on 3rd.

It occurred to me that I may have cut that interview a bit short so I came up with the “mixed tape idea”. Basically I was going to ask everyone to fill up one side of a mixed tape with five top bands…
