LIKE A PRO

Speed is a vital consideration when considering different connectivity options, but the features and uses of each one are just as important. With so many data connectivity options available, it’s difficult to figure out what the difference between the different access technologies is, and which one would best suit your business needs.

As a business owner, this is even more challenging. Should you choose the ‘wrong’ solution in terms of the type and quality of connectivity provided, this could prove costly both in terms of money and business efficiency – just think about what would happen if you couldn’t connect to your server.

While budgetary considerations are important, too many companies choose connectivity solutions designed for consumers because they are cheaper. However, then they run the risk of not getting the levels of service, the speeds, and benefits they need.

Just like weighing up the features of a four-door car versus a hatchback, there are a number of factors to consider when choosing the right connectivity technology for your business.

ADSL and VDSL

ADSL and VDSL are what people would call “fixed line connectivity”. ADSL uses a separate frequency to the telephone line, and offers faster download speeds than upload speeds. VDSL is a faster connection, and has around 4 times faster download speeds than ADSL.

Just like you need the right car - with the right features for you - to drive down the highway, choosing the right connectivity solution - with the right fteatures for your business - is essential to navigating the information super highway.

DSL is fine for business broadband connectivity, providing speeds from 2Mbps to 40Mbps, but the speed of the line will define what can be done with the connection.

The slowest line, 2Mbps – 4Mbps, is perfect for a business that will be using the Internet for browsing, emails, voice services, and simple applications that do not require Internet connection. The middle of the range (8Mbps – 10Mbps) line is ideal for businesses that will be using the Internet for browsing, streaming, remote applications, weekly backups, and simple applications that require an internet connection.

The top speed DSL line offers 20Mbps – 40Mbps, and is great for a business that will be using the Internet for browsing, streaming, remote applications, daily backups, downloading and uploading of content and intermediated applications that require a consistent Internet connection. At peak speeds of up to 40Mbps you can download a 1GB file within minutes.

Fibre

Fibre is the sports car of connectivity. The latest in broadband Internet technology, fibre can transmit information at bolt speed in way that is more reliable and more stable than any other technology. It uses pure glass fibre optic threads, rather than copper, which allows for the fast speeds, and also eliminates downtime as a result of copper theft.

Using light instead of electricity to carry a digital data signal, fibre is 50 times faster than a standard copper connection, generating peak speeds of up to 100Mbps. It’s a permanent, always-on connection, so it can enable Software-as-a-Service applications and virtual work environments. Fibre is the home of high def – its quality enables makes high definition Video Conferencing and Collaboration, seamlessly.

Not only does fibre offer video calls that are as clear as face-to-face conversations, there’s enough speed and data to ensure your entire office is hyper-connected at the same time and at the fastest speeds. That includes everything you can think of, including smartphones, tablets, laptops and smart TVs.

Mobile broadband

LTE and LTE-A are the next generation of mobile broadband, following on from 3G. LTE and LTE-A offers download speeds of up to 150Mbps, and is plug-and-play. This means no delays in waiting for installation, and no downtime due to copper theft. The best part is you can WiFi your business in seconds – with no compromise on speed or latency, at the same cost as 3G.

Telkom LTE and LTE-A is South Africa’s’s leading commercially available mobile broadband and is only available on Telkom’s network. Our dedicated spectrum means there’s no compromising existing voice or data services to enable LTE (up to 90Mbps) and LTE-A (up to 150Mbps).

Managed data networks

A managed data network takes all the stress out of running your company network, allowing us to do it for you. Not only does it cover access points, but also a range of management activities to ensure that you get the availability, recovery from breakdowns, traffic levels, response times, and so on, that you need.

By providing connectivity to any type of broadband, managed data networks are flexible enough to support voice, video and integrated data applications on a single access medium.

VPNA VPN is a virtual private network that creates a secure network connection over a public network such as the Internet or a private network owned by a service provider. This technology allows you to create an encrypted connection over a standard (and in some cases) less secure network. Using a VPN ensures that your connected systems have the appropriate level of security, regardless of your network infrastructure.

VPN Lite offers the ideal solution to handle your own networking with secure access to a web portal which is used to create all the sites and individual connections needed for your own secure VPN. Private static IP addresses allow for any site to communicate with any other site on the network.

With the ability to connect up to 50 sites on a VPN Lite network, you can communicate between branches, businesses and even individuals with an uncapped, discounted bundle of your choice.

The VPN Lite portal ensures simple self-installation and the creation of all the sites of your network in Telkom’s database. We also provide you with all the necessary tutorials and setup utilities to configure the routers (standard ADSL modems) to connect sites to your VPN Lite network. There are various packages to choose from, ranging from 10GB up to 320 GB per month.

VPN Supreme, on the other hand, is a completely outsourced Layer 3 networking solution, developed to provide end-to-end connectivity to multiple sites through a private, secure and reliable network solution. Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) enables consolidation of voice, video and various grades of data communications over a single VPN, which is secure and separate from the Internet.

VPN Supreme’s dedicated logical IP network on a shared infrastructure (Telkom’s IP Network) ensures security, reliability, manageability and addressing policies equivalent to those of a private IP network because it is separate from the Internet. This package includes 24-hour technical support and active network management from Telkom’s world class Network Operations Centre.

VPN Supreme includes the provisioning, configuration, maintenance and management of your network and equipment. A range of flexible access options are available, including ADSL, Wireless and Ethernet with appropriate Service Level Agreement (SLA’s). VPN Supreme has differentiated classes of service that manage traffic types effectively, ensuring that mission-critical traffic receives the required bandwidth throughput and performance.

Telkom Mobility

Telkom Mobility provides remote connectivity to your Head Office or data centre network, using ADSL, Analogue dial-up, ISDN or mobile access (via Telkom’s mobile network). The Telkom Mobility access service is deployed over a private network that Telkom maintains.

Telkom Mobility ensures reduced calling- and usage-based costs, as well as the added convenience of Telkom’s mobile access service. The ADSL service is recommended as the best access service for Telkom Mobility in terms of price, speed and data volumes, as the ADSL service provides an “always-available” connection. For people on the road, Telkom’s mobile access service is recommended, and offers excellent value for money.

VSAT

Sometimes you can’t get a connection the traditional way. Maybe you live out in the sticks or maybe your area battles with cable theft. VSAT offers a combination of data, voice and multimedia connectivity in star, mesh or multistar network configurations. Available anywhere in South Africa or Africa, no matter where you are, VSAT is perfect for areas suffering from cable theft.

VSAT offers very high network availability, Constant 24/7 internet connectivity and dedicated bandwidth WAN networks. This solution provides Internet, phone or fax connections without a landline.

LAN Connect

Telkom’s LAN Connect service is a cost-effective, secure, versatile and scalable interconnection or extension of Local Area Networks (LAN’s), offering bandwidths ranging from 1 GB up to 100 GB. It is independent and seamless to any transport technologies and offers a complete, affordable solution with ready-to-use interfaces.

LAN Connect is always deployed as Point-to-Point or Point-to-Multipoint service. Each Point to point service is identified as unique and therefore, provisioned as a customized solution. The product also has Service Level Agreements to ensure that your business has a resilient and reliable access network to provide you with a competitive advantage in the challenging economic environment.

Metro Ethernet

The MetroLAN and MetroLINK are Layer 2 services on the Metro Ethernet Network which offers point to point, point to multipoint or multipoint to multipoint connectivity between 2 or more sites, whether in one city or several cities. Telkom Business offers Metro Ethernet connectivity within a single metro and nationally. You can choose between having a single virtual connection, or Layer 2 (L2) Virtual Private Network (VPN), between all the sites differentiating your traffic from other customers’ traffic. A L2 VPN provides transparent connectivity between your endpoints and enables privacy and security of your data.

You also have a choice of bandwidth ranging from 1Mbit/s up to 1Gbit/s and can specify the bandwidth on a per-site basis. Bandwidth on the Metro Ethernet network is scalable in small increments and additional bandwidth can be added to services relatively easily without any hardware upgrades. Metro Ethernet is a technology that provides cost effective, high speed connectivity in a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN). Connectivity between sites within a metropolitan area (Intra-metro) as well as between metropolitan areas (Inter-metro) will be allowed.

Diginet

Diginet provides constant, reliable connectivity for business networks that need around-the-clock connectivity. Diginet basic offers data speed of between 1200 Bit/s up to 64 Kbit/s, while Diginet Plus offers speeds ranging between 128Kbit/s up to 1984Kbit/s.

Diginet offers a maximum constant data transmission speed of 1984Kbps, and is super-dependable as a result of constant network monitoring. This solution includes monitoring of the Network Terminating Units (NTUs) on your premises, and is charged at a fixed monthly rental.
