It was with interest that I discovered that I had lived in North Carolina, Ohio and Colorado as
stated in newsletter. I’m guessing that New Hampshire got translated to North Carolina.
That Oklahoma got translated to Ohio. That Coronado CA got translated to Colorado. Add:
PA, NJ, WA, MA and I have lived a few too many places to remember. I transferred member-
ship to Indialantic Rotary July 2013.
King Center’s Brevard County Youth Outreach Karen Wilson
by Gloria LeBlanc Our speaker today was Karen Wilson who has been the Director of the Youth & Outreach Program at the King Center since 1997.
Their Mission Statement: To enhance the quality of life for all residents of Brevard County through cultural, educational, recreational and community arts program, by providing access to high quality, challenging and diverse touring program offering the finest performing arts experience for young theatre patrons on Central Florida’s East Coast.
As we know, the public schools no longer do a good job exposing children to the arts and teaching cultural topics. Fortunately the King Center has stepped into this void.
The performances for the school children are quite diversified. Last year the King Center presented Berenstain Bears Live; Math Mania - the show; Alice Rocks Wonderland; Peking Acrobats; and the Vanished Vaudevillian. Karen mentioned that this coming week on Tuesday, May 13, Vocal Trash will besubject - a combination of “STOMP” and “GLEE.” You can see from these performances a little bit of this and a little bit of that is what they offer. The focus is not on one topic alone, such as dance. They try to provide a broad spectrum to introduce children to a wide variety of the Arts.
It is called Youth OUTREACH because not all performances are held at the King Center. The goal is to perform at local venues, too. Karen said they are always looking for new locations. If you are aware of a situation where a program would be appropriate for the King Center’s Youth Outreach Program, please contact Karen at 321-433-5717 / [email protected].
The ages of the children are taken into consideration. The Berenstain Bears event was aimed at Pre-K to Grade three. Alice Rocks Wonderland was for a slighter older audience (up to Grade eight) and Vocal Trash aimed even higher in that it is appropriate for a general audience.
The price of the tickets for the performances at King Center is quite reasonable - $9.00. And, with every ten tickets purchased, one FREE ticket is included. They do this so those children who cannot afford to pay are able to attend. Before 9-11 30,000 students were being served annually. Due to the economic downturn that number has dropped to 8,000. The hope is that in the near future the number of students being served will increase.
Corporate sponsors include Boeing, Publix, the Florida Theatrical Association, Culture Builds Florida, the Brevard Cultural Alliance, Brevard County and the Brevard Public Schools.
It’s nice to know that this kind of effort is being made to keep the Arts alive.

NETWORKING NOTES Steve Spragins’ Alliance Title Presents 7th Annual Workshop in “Breakfast & Learn” Series Brevard Business News, May 12, 2014 reports that Active Member Steve Spragins’ business, Alliance Title, is again offering to local professional realtors its seventh breakfast work session. The “Short-Sale” refresher is scheduled at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 8 at his office on Harbor City Blvd. in Melbourne.
A review of the basic information needed for a successful short-sale transaction will be covered in the one-hour, homemade- breakfast session as presented by short-sale specialists. “While they are all very popular (previous short-sales topics), this class is the one people keep asking for,” said Steve.
Next in the series is “Title 101” with specialist Liz Casella. It is scheduled for Thurs-day at 9:00 a.m. on June 12. Reservations are required. In addition to the promising economic growth inherent in the upcoming move of Northrup Grumman to Melbourne, another significant spin-off could well be an even stronger relationship with Florida Tech.
With a long history of teamwork between the two entities, the additional 1,800 high-paying technical jobs associated with the new venture will clearly benefit FIT students as well as campus life. Always moving with the technical and industrial growth needs of the Space Coast, FIT President – CEO and Active Member Tony Catanese lauds the historic cooperation between academia and the real-world of technology. Northrup Grumman is “. . . routinely among the top three employers of Florida Tech graduates (along with Harris Corporation and Lockheed Martin) . . .” according to a Florida Today story “Florida Tech hopes to see a stronger partnership” in the May 9. 2014 issue. “That relationship is only expected to grow,” said Catan-ese, “We see Northrup Grumman being a major part of our future.”
Florida Tech has had a Northrup Grumman representative on its board of directors as early as 1979. With the formation of the College of Aeronautics in 1991, and naming it after George M Skurla, chairman of the FIT board , the relationship continued to grow.

“EREY GOING WELL,” SAYS LARRY CINCO
Our Club’s Rotary International Foundation Co-Chair Larry Cinco reported that members are responding very well to date on the Every Rotarian Every Year 100 percent campaign to earn the District 6930 award. Members are being asked to donate no less than $10 toward the RI Foundation now through June, 2014 to reach the coveted award that other clubs in the District have already earned.
Over 30 members’ names have been posted as contributors on the EREY display banner. Make out your check to The Rotary Foundation (not the Indialantic Club Foundation) and give it to Larry, Co-Chair Randy Golden or to our Club Treasurer Jack Ward. Cash and PayPal contributions also are acceptable.

Corinne Ishler, Club President and prime-mover in initiating and organizing our 2015 cooperative fundraiser with the Town of Indialantic, reminded planning committee members about the 6:30 p.m. “sponsor recruitment” planning session on Thursday, May 8 at the Indialantic Town Hall. Our major responsibility for the upcoming event is, in fact, recruiting sponsors to support the event
CLUB MEMBERSHIP DUES INCREASE APPROVED, EFFECTIVE JULY, 2014
President-Elect Julia Babbitt led a discussion concerning an increase in membership dues in the amount of $20 semi-annually.
A vote by the members present was an overwhelming approval.
DISTRICT COFERENCE UPDATE – MAY 16. 17. 18. Past-President Dwan Buie announced that several members have registered, or will be registering, to attend the 2014 District 6930 Conference next weekend in Port St. Lucie. President-Elect Julia Babbitt is in for the full weekend and three others are signed up for Saturday’s programs. Dwan encouraged others to form a car pool.
The Club has reserved a table and space in the “Friendship Room” for accommo-dating our slide presentation, “55 Years of Service Above Self,” for displaying (for tak-ing home) a stack of our Club’s promotional tri-folds and offering “Rotary Internation-al – Service Above Self” bumper stickers for sale at $5.00 each to benefit PolioPlus.
ETHIOPIA SEES POLIO INCREASE, PAKISTAN NOW WORRIED
With a resurgence of polio cases in Ethiopia due to the flood of Somalian immigrants, the disease now has reached a level of serious concern in Pakistan. What was originally considered a plague among the very poor, the spread among the upper classes in that nation has raised serious concerns about a crisis on a national level.
The May 11, 2014 issue of The New York Times - “Disease of Pakistan’s Poor Now Worries the Affluent” – reports that the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) declared a polio emergensecy there last week, identifying Pakistan, along with Syria and Cameroon, “. . . the world’s main reservoirs of the virus.” “A W.H.O recommendation that travelers not leave Pakistan without a polio vaccination certificate has caused confusion. Doctors, clinics and hospitals have been inundated with inquiries..
An association of travel agents has already reported “panic” among air travel customers. The gravity of a crisis “that has been quietly building for years, and which is now . . . spilling into other countries (is) threatening to undo decades of efforts to eradicate polio across the globe.”

BOARD OF DIRECTORS – APRIL 7, 2014 MEETINGS REPORTS The Rotary Club of Indialantic Board of Directors met with a quorum on Wednesday, April 7 at 11:30 a.m. at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club.
New Business:
Approval of the proposed 2014-15 budget - passed.
Approval to increase membership dues by $20 semi-annually effective July1, 2014-15 – passed.
The Rotary Club of Indialantic Board of Directors met with a quorum on Wednesday, April 7 at 4:30 p.m. at Webster University in Melbourne, FL.
New Business
To confirm the results of the membership vote during the Club luncheon meeting on May 7, 2013, the Board approved the budget for 2014-15.
Approved the request for Leave-of-Absence by Stan Helm (annual teaching assign-ment in China) for May 23 to August 1, 2014.
Accepted resignations from membership - Patty Hurst (work demands); Joe Gallagher (work demands) and Larry Apotheker (closed his business, other issues).
Old Business
Approved the “Witch” Way 5K Walk/Race in cooperation with the Town of Indialan-tic as a 2014-15 major fundraiser. A recommendation was passed to request from each Active Member a $100 contribution to the event. The recruitment by a member of a sponsor in that amount or more will serve as a donation. At least two promotional outside banners will be designed by President Corinne Ishler for purchase for this event and on other occasions where appropriate. A club booth with Interact students participating is in the offing as well as some promotional apparel for volunteers.
Officer Reports
President Elect Julia Babbitt – the 2014-15 budget includes $1,000 to support Rotary Exchange Student Gaelle Lambert from France, in cooperation with the Melbourne Rotary Club. She will be enrolled at Satellite High School.
Our team attending the District Conference will be using a power-point display, distributing the Club tri-fold and selling Rotary-Service Above Self bumper stickers to support PolioPlus.
Past-President Dwan Buie reminded the Directors of the car pool going to the District Conference. He suggested that the Club replace the weather-beaten Indialantic Rotary sign in Nance Park in Indialantic. A $500 maximum expenditure was approved for this purpose.
Secretary Jean Hender reported 76 Active Members and two Honorary Mem-bers. She noted that awards, pins and other needed supplies have been ordered.
Treasurer Jack Ward reported on the Club Accounts: Business Checking $615.47, Business Savings $5,353.41, Cash $5,968.88.
Committee Reports:
Fundraising – Discussion centered on a December multi-club event featuring Central Florida Winds Ensemble. The project materialized from discussions with representa-tives of the Eau Gallie Rotary Club a few months ago in their quest of assistance in promoting membership and inter-club cooperation.
Membership/Publicity -Jim Hagerty reported on resignations, leaves-of-absence and attendance issues among Active Members.
Literacy – Josh the Baby Otter I scheduled for a May 8th performance at St Marks Methodist pre-school in Indialantic. Stan Helm will produce labels to place in the Paperback Book Project materials.
Other Business/Announcements- Digitized Club records and mementos will be placed by President-Elect Julia Babbitt in the Club Drop Box. Her office will provide shredding service for unneeded Club materials.
