The impact of the travel and tourism revolution in Egypt
The tourism sector has been a driving factor in the economic development and global recognition
of Egypt. The land where the pharaohs lived was always associated with an element of mystique
and when archeologists began digging, they found their path all the way back to the millennia
old history. Initially only the rich found Egyptian doors open for them as it airway conveyance
wasn't yet so easily accessible. However, since the 1960s, more people have embraced this
amazing land of numerous cultures and significant ruins and temples.
In 1951, statistics recorded that almost a million people visited the country and finally when the
5 year plan included some budget for tourism development in 1975, the sector picked up pace.
Not only that, Egypt also reduced the visa restrictions for travelers from Europe, North America
and also got new embassies developed for new countries such as Finland, Netherlands, etc.
Egyptian tours were given a major spike when the government chose to invest 12 % of the five
year plan budget for improved hospitality units. It was due to the aim of enhancing tourism in the
country and offering better facilities and convenience to the travelers that Egyptian government
sought infrastructural development of the commute modes of road, rail and air and secure
development and accessibility of main Egyptian tourist centers. Egyptian railways cover 800
million passenger miles every year and are one of the modern foundational-economical pillars of
Egypt. Now, travelers could also access the coastal spots and find professional guides for
educational and convenient Egyptian tours who knew everything about the past, present of
Egypt.
By 1981, Egypt was already entertaining 1.8 million travelers and finally by 200, the number
grew to 5.5 million. 14.7 million is the highest number of tourists who visited Egypt in 2010.
The same year, the country managed to rake up tourism revenue of staggering $ 12.5 billion
however, due to the politician unrest, the country has seen a major decline in the past 4 years.
Short Nile cruise tours are conducted between Luxor and Aswan, while longer tours often
include additional trip to Dendera along with felucca sunset boat ride. The felucca is actually
reminiscent of Egyptian traditional and offers the memorable Nile sailboat experience. Travelers
often take short, single day (multiple hours) trips and those looking for authentic Egyptian
experience and calm also book multi-day cruise rides. There is nothing too lavish about the
accommodations and facilities aboard a felucca but the beauty is in the serenity and beauty of the
Nile and the diversion free, traditional ride. A Nile cruise offers a floating hotel experience with
swimming pools, nightclubs-bars, good restaurants and sometimes small libraries and stores as
well. Most cruise packages include party and entertainment on Egyptian cultural themes and
Nubian shows, exquisite belly dancers, etc. Usually, Egyptian trips centrally focus on the capital
city due to its extravagance of culture and history and reaching Egypt is much easier through the
Cairo international airport. Slowly and steadily, Egypt is finding itself back in the game with
improving political stability and amazing tourism package charges.
