What happened in 1965?

Dr. Gordon Moore

Moore’s Law

Moore's law is the observation that the number of transistors in a dense integrated circuit doubles about every two years and the cost of compute halves.

Every decade enables a new compute platform

• 1970s – Mainframes, punch cards, mag tape, automation - IBM, DEC, ICL

• 1980s – Microcomputers – BBC Micro (Acorn)/Sinclair/Intel-IBM PC –Modems/Prestel

• 1990’s – WWW & Internet - Low power micros – ARM/TI/Motorola – Laptop & mobile phones

• 2000’s – Broadband, Wireless – Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, Featurephone/Smartphone, low cost sensors

• 2010’s – Internet-of-Things, Cloud analytics, content, GAFA/surveillance capitalism, LPWAN

• 2020’s – AI, 3D printing at scale, predictive maintenance, IIoT, EV/AV, drones

So what's wrong with batteries?

Batteries are perfect for some applications

However system designers need to consider …

• Lifetime & in situ replacement costs• System performance & reporting • Competition for Lithium - EVs & grid storage • End of life responsibilities

Batteries are not ideal for industrial sensors

What is the problem with temperature?

Battery capacity vs TemperatureLi-Ion based cell chemistry

Transistor leakage current increases by orders of magnitude!

What is happening in IIoT and why?

We are seeing the emerging architecture of ..

Sensors – Vibration/Temp/Power/Audio/Optical/Thermal

Networks – Bluetooth/BLE/V5 – WiFI, 2G/3G/4G/5G, LPWAN, wired

AI / Cloud analytics

What's missing?

Power – lots of it, easily accessible,

at low cost & long life9

• No Moore's Law2 for batteries3

• More, bigger batteries are not the answer

a BIG gap

Moores Law Energy needed Battery Capacity

1 Assumed wireless sensor system power increase 20% p.a. for new wireless and sensor functionality 2 Dr. Gordon Moore, Intel 1965 – Every 24 months processor performance doubles3 Aviceene Research/US Dept of Energy – Lithium Ion capacity/density increases by ~5%

Battery replacement is a massive ongoing maintenance cost, dominates OPEX

= 8power devices harvest energy from their environment & enable

self-powered, maintenance free operation for up to 10 years

Why Energy Harvesting is so important

Emerging architecture for “intelligent sensors”

• We are seeing increasing interest in high performance sensor systems that can run complex, computationally intense algorithms as intelligence moves from the edge to the sensor itself

• Increasing use of both high & low bandwidth wireless standards where available power governs the bearer rather than cost

• This supports an emerging architecture that will have to include energy harvesting in the sensor to provide the necessary power to allow “Fit & Forget” operation for 10 years

• Because ….

There is no Moore’s Law for batteries

One last thought …

The 3 universal truths of innovation

It ALWAYS takes LONGER AND COSTS MORE

Truly transformational technology has a bigger

market than any prediction

The “Killer App” is never what you planned
