The IDS Story: Fulfillment & Transportation

Simple BeginningsIDS began its journey in 1960 as a public warehouse and local cartage provider. For much of 1970s and into the early 1990s IDS grew by providing both plant support and finished goods distribution. In the 1990s, IDS executives had extensive background in food distribution and began to expand their services to food manufacturers.

10/28/20143

Simple BeginningsBy the late 1990s IDS had solidified its reputation for performing best when the situation was the most demanding.By the end of the 1990s IDS was serving many diverse industries including consumer electronics, food, automotive, health and beauty aids, chemical and publishing.By the mid-2000s IDS made the decision to focus exclusively on businesses shipping direct to the consumer where their reputation for flexibility, capability and high performance levels became a key differentiator amongst the traditional fulfillment houses that had served the direct to consumer market.

10/28/20144

Simple BeginningsIn the late 2000s, IDS acquired a transportation company for the sole purpose of differentiating its e-fulfillment offering. With a transportation offering, e-fulfillment customers would now have a one-stop shop for all their logistics needs. This last step seem logical and needed in the ecommerce market. IDS has remained true to its passion and focus on customer service because without it you cant survive for 54 years much less become when of the leader in your industry. Now 54 years later, the IDS history and expertise brings a full service logistics provider perspective to the ecommerce market with a broader focus and look at its customers complete supply chain to identify areas for improved efficiency and cost saving. 10/28/20145

IDS Fulfillment: Process Driven, Hero Supported

Process Driven, Hero SupportedYou are an ecommerce business and need stable, repeatable processes. You need a fulfillment provider that can take care of your business every day without your intervention; you have bigger opportunities to focus on.You need a fulfillment provider that you can find and forget and know your orders are being delivered, until something happens10/28/20147

Process Driven, Hero Supporteda really big sales opportunity, or a really big problem (new product launches, but its late or needs a last minute tweak). Now you dont need a solid vendor you need real people that care about your program and know its ins and outs.IDS: Big company processes that deliver high performance routinely, plus staff that know how to and are empowered to rise to those special occasions. IDS brings you the processes and capabilities you want combined with the give a damn you need.10/28/20148

IDS Fulfillment: Capable, Flexible, Goldilocks?

Capable. Flexible. Process Driven.OK, lets pretend youre Goldilocks (except for the breaking and entering rap). You need flexibility, but when you look behind the curtain at the flexible fulfillment companies you find, you see that they are too small to entrust your business with. You check out the big guys and the sales staff is all about flexibility, but when you see the operations yourself, you know that you better be the right shaped cog for their wheels, or its not the right fit.10/28/201410

Capable. Flexible. Process Driven. Then theres IDS: entrepreneurial flexibility combined with the controlled processes you need to succeed. All-in-all, IDS is an economical and safe choice.Theres too small, too big, and IDS Fulfillment (porridge optional). At IDS, we strive to provide process driven order fulfillment and warehousing programs to our clients while also offering the flexibility, nurturing, and custom service needed by our clients.10/28/201411

IDS: Our Start In Ecommerce Fulfillment

Our Journey To FulfillmentWhile ecommerce did not take off until the early 2000s, prior to that, consumers where still skipping the stores and ordering products from catalogs.IDS began its pick, pack and ship operation by shipping catalog orders for several big box retailers, that recognized IDS Indianapolis, IN facility was an excellent location to ship from nationally.10/28/201413

Our Journey To FulfillmentThe location alone gave IDS a tremendous advantage over the competition because we could get the product to the customer faster and cheaper than anyone else. It was only right that as ecommerce emerged, IDS would make that transition as well. The internet allowed shipping direct to the consumer and IDS saw a need in the market for someone to provide fulfillment services to these companies.10/28/201414

The Best B2C Ecommerce Fulfillment Solutions Start With Transportation

Start with TransportationUp to this point, most of the conversations we have put out on the topic of efulfillment solutions has been around taking care of business within the four walls of the distribution center. But, for the most impactful solution, the discussion has to include inbound and outbound transportation.A transportation solution that solves the cost and delivery equation is all about location, location and location. While inbound costs are important, there are minor in comparison to the outbound transportation costs.10/29/201416

Start with TransportationTen times out of ten, the small parcel cost for the home delivery will be more costly than the costs associated with the fulfillment center itself, so to minimize the parcel shipping costs it is best to position the fulfillment DC as close to the customer as possible. For a low volume ecommerce shipper this will be a single DC model, while larger shippers, with 1,000s of orders a day, would optimize the efficiency of their supply chain transit and cost by having multiple fulfillment DCs across the country.10/29/201417

Start with TransportationWith IDS providing a transportation solution, efulfillment customers would now have a one-stop shop for all their logistics needs. As we assembled our service offering, we saw most fulfillment centers could receive product into their facility, pick the orders and manifest them for shipping to the end consumer. We thought the DC quality functionality is the table stake to be an ecommerce fulfillment provider and felt what separates the table stake providers from the full supply chain solutions ecommerce fulfillment provider is their ability to wrap a transportation solution around their DC offering to deliver the orders to the end consumer at the least cost and quickest transit. This makes the solution become a true competitive advantage.10/29/201418

Ecommerce Fulfillment: The IDS Difference

The IDS DifferenceWhile IDS sets firm metrics to track and monitor that your packages ship on time and accurately every time, that is not the true IDS difference. The IDS difference is our location, our ability to give you the tools to build your brand, our proven processes and our employees.IDS Indianapolis, IN reaches roughly 78% of the US population in 3 day ground and 87% of the population east of the Rockies in 2 day ground. 10/29/201420

The IDS DifferenceIDS Salt Lake City, UT location is the ideal distribution point for West coast orders reaching over 90% of the population west of the Rockies in 2 day ground. For companies looking for multiple fulfillment locations, using IDS Indianapolis and Salt Lake City locations as a two point distribution model covers over 90% of the US population in day ground. The IDS difference is our ability to provide our customers faster transit times and lower outbound shipping costs from our locations.

The IDS DifferenceBuild your brand: IDS offers customized fulfillment solutions designed around your needs that allow you to build your brand the way you want.IDS encourages our customers to utilize marketing inserts and other promotional material in the packages. When your business grows everyone wins!IDS proven processes and exceptional employees truly are the difference.10/29/201422

IDS Fulfillment: What The Future Holds

The Future of IDSThe growth of bricks and mortar retailing is slowing, and those retailers with substantial investment in bricks and mortar are looking to leverage that investment in the e-commerce world. This means more omni-channel retailing, which will require continuing investment in IT in order to allow our customers to see their inventory over their entire supply chain so that they can then make decisions on how to properly allocate inventory amongst their various retail channels.10/29/201424

The Future of IDSEcommerce retailers continuously look to drive down delivery cost. For many, that means looking at alternatives to the UPS and FedEx solutions which dominate that market. By leveraging our transportation management expertise, IDS will be providing our customers alternative parcel delivery options that compete with services provided by UPS and FedEx. Applying traditional methodologies of transportation management to the parcel delivery needs of ecommerce retailers will lead to creative solutions that will allow IDS to deliver more tailored solutions designed to meet the needs of our customers.10/29/201425

The Future of IDSIncreasing operating efficiency is always a priority. In the coming years, IDS will continue to utilize automation in order to improve throughput which will require greater analysis to identify areas where automation can be leveraged over a diversion client base and product mix. Although the future is never really clear, the trends tells us that these three areas are providing the challenges on the horizon. IDS will continue to meet these challenges by applying their supply chain management knowledge in ever-expanding ways to serve the needs of e-commerce retailers.10/29/201426
